PSA: If you live in a daylight savings zone, don't forget to change your clocks tonight!
Meanwhile, a variation on a poll we did last year. As always, answer as many or as few as you like, or just talk about something else. If it's spring where you live, adjust the questions accordingly.
1. What's the fragrance you'd most like to add to your collection this fall?
2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?
3. It's time for a (fantasy) fall getaway! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.
Note: top image is autumn day [cropped] by OiMax at flickr; some rights reserved.
Oh fun! SOTD is Vetiverissimo; trying to see if it still has an unpleasant drydown on me.
1. New acquisition: I’d love Byredo la Selle. Would settle for Bibliothèque.
2. Voted off: Encre Noire. It’s very fickle on me. Sometimes it’s spectacular, but other times it curdles. I’m not often brave enough to find out whether it’s a good day or a bad day, so it sits unworn.
3. Vacation: Bali! So I can sit in a house on stilts in the middle of the ocean! I think I’d bring Neroli Portofino. Wait, do I have to bring something I already have? If that’s the case, then my decant of Histoire des Orangers.
Ok, time to learn a bunch of music. The hustle never ends.
Oh, I could be ready to leave for Bali in a couple hours, max.
I am sorry about your Encre Noire but it’s too heavy for Bali anyway.
All right, Robin, let’s do this! Abdicate our responsibilities and fly to Bali 🙂 You’re right, EN has no place in the Bali of my imagination.
I got my sample of Vetiverissimo yesterday! I’m not the biggest vetiver fan so I’m no good judge, but it was completely linear to me from beginning to end. What were you smelling in the drydown? Curious to hear your impressions from take 2.
Bali sounds fab, once I’d get over that plane ride!
It was completely linear on me too. And a rare one that my husband disliked; usually he has no comment on my fumes but he thought this one smelled like industrial cleaner. I rather agreed… will stick with Lampblack, which I adore.
Huh. It just smells like a straightforward vetiver to me, which is not my thing. I also love Lampblack, but I don’t really think of that one as a vetiver perfume. There’s so much more happening in that one.
Gosh I WISH it were linear on me. I love it at first. It’s kind of a sweet metallic musk in the drydown—like poor quality metal left to heat up.
By “poor quality,” I think I mean metal that hasn’t been properly cleaned of the processing materials.
I just applied that. Too soon to know what I think.
How funny you mention Histoire d’orangers. I tried it yesterday and fell in love (not with the price though ????). It would be my pick for nr. 1. Or Seville a l’aube. Sounds very good too, but haven’t tried it. Would like to hear how they compare!
Nr 2 is Narciso Rodriguez Red. It did not turn out to be my fall go-to.
Nr 3 would be a nice resort in a warm place with a short plane trip. Maybe impossible, but we can dream can’t we? For a warm place I would bring my new California Reverie. For a colder place my Dsquared2 Want, or Want pink ginger. Very fall-y!
Hello all! Hope you’re having a lovely day. I’m wearing Occur! By Avon, a vintage perfume that they made during the midcentury. It is incredibly feral smelling, and what I imagined MKK would smell like. Indolic flowers, real civet, and just a brushing of spices. It is so lovely. And it’s not that hard to find. Perfect for this fall day, but I can’t wait to wear it in summer!
Ahhh, memories of the days when my mom sold Avon. Some of those old ones are great. You do smell good.
I actually found a perfume oil sample set from the early 60’s with all of the then current lineup. Occur! is by far the winner, but I have a soft spot for Cotillion.
I wore Somewhere. I still have the bath powder.
I don’t remember that one but I’ll try some on tonight!
I totally skipped past the questions!
1. CdG White. I’ve been in love with this one for forever, and I think it’s time.
2. I just do not want to smell the way Lovely smells. It smells great on others but I’m more of a Covet man myself.
3. I want to go to Kyoto, and I’ll bring Iris Ukiyoe. Soft enough for public transport but interesting enough for daily wear.
Coumarin, Thank you for reminding me to try Coven!!
It’s one of my favorites and still very easy to find.
Samples are out of stock @ Luckyscent!!
Ah, I meant Covet by SJP! I apologize for the confusion!
Oh! All good.
I love the civet in Occur! and have a bottle that I should wear more often. You smell wonderful.
Thank you! After I bought the tester set, I found two bottles of Occur at different estate sales. Now I feel set. 🙂
Yes. Its really good. Found some on Ebay too. Like it a lot!
Occur! deserves its exclamation mark, it’s spectacular, another one often compared that I like very much is Revlon Intimate.
Rainy and unpleasant here. Setting the clocks back is sad.
1. I’d get Lubin Kismet.
2. Amouage Lyric. Headache in a bottle.
3. Venice, before it sinks completely. To counter the inevitable smell, would bring something that’s persistent – maybe Serge Tubereuse Criminelle.
Enjoy the weekend all!
I hate hate hate hate daylight savings!
We are watching that Sinking Cities series on PBS. It’s all sinking.
I just watched the trailer for that last night! It’s added to my watch list. Looking fascinating…and frightening.
I hate daylight savings too.????
“Looks” fascinating
I would have forgott4en – so THANK YOU Robin!
ditto ditto DITTO
Guess we need to watch that show. More fear and loathing.
It’s interesting how different we all are: I love moving time back (though I would prefer not to mess about it at all); I enjoy rain; and I love Lyric. Oh, and I can’t wear any tuberose-centric perfumes. Though, I’d love to visit Venice.
I love that we’re all different!
Sorry you don’t enjoy Lyric! I have a decant of it to keep me warm, but once I finish it, I will seriously have to decide whether or not to take the FB plunge.
We have really different noses/skin; I just tried Kismet yesterday and find it a bit unpleasant.
Maybe next swapmeet? If you’re in CONUS let me know.
OmGosh!! This is SO hard:
Okay Le Cri ia my most desired ro add to my collecrion.
My vote off the island is rhe new SL PP as it sadly clashes with my skin chemistry.
My vacation is to Italy – as always my Heart. Soul & Blood (literally) my scent is Chanel N.22 and EMB is Theorama. (And Le Cri! If lucky)
For today: I am still comando working in the yard but feeling fireside intense or Bois D’Ascese afterwards.
I am playing frisbee w/the dobe-cant find him in the leaves!! happy weekend All!
Sorry y’all -he keeps dumping the dirty thing in my lap! Dirty FAT fingers!
I’d take a bottle of Le Cri as well. I’m thinking maybe in the Spring…
Elisa P – are you thinking a split?
Not right now. If I still have a hankering for it when winter’s over, maybe then. Though my experience is my attention span is quite short!
Ugh. The fall time change. I dread the shorter days.
SotD is Narciso edt, or Black Cube. An easy, no brainer for me.
1. I’m kind of on a no-buy right now. I have lots of samples and decants from the recent swap and freebiemeet that I have to take some time and seriously go through, explore and wear.
Recent things I’ve tried that I have added to the eventual buy list are: Arbole, Arbole and Byredo 1996. Both yummy.
2. My collection is relatively small, 13 full bottles at present, and honestly I would like to keep the number around a dozen. I know that may sound crazy to some, but the ever growing collection of bottles, decants and samples starts to stress me out. I get the paralyzing problem of too many choices. There’s not one that I would vote off right now, but my redo would be Eau Premiere instead of L’eau. I prefer the drydown of the former. Ah well.
3. Somewhere warm! And sunny! Probably a quick trip to Phoenix to visit my favorite auntie, or Austin to visit my college bestie. Warm for me means citrus, so I’ll take a travel spray of Assam of India.
What about setting out a small tray with a couple of seasonal scents on it, and limit your choice to the supposedly optimal 4-6?
You can tuck away the rest and then switch over for the seasons.
Oh you smell lovely! I couldn’t handle the edp of Narciso, but the edt is so wearable and pretty!
I think it’s a great goal to keep your collection around a dozen! Enough to have variety but you won’t feel guilty about not using them up.
Someone who used to post here kept a fixed number of bottles — 10, I think — and would only buy a new one when he’d used up one of the 10. I used to think that was crazy but now I think it’s a great idea. I want more than 10 but I do think it would be great to have 15 or 20 all in very small bottles.
Finally, it’s Saturday though I didn’t get a chance to sleep as long as I planned to: Do Not Disturb on my phone that works perfectly for a work day proved to be not enough for a weekend by letting through a text message from a friend. I woke up to look at it, my cat heard that I was awake and came to remind me that he hasn’t been fed forever… Well, at least I got to cuddle with him for 10 minutes before he lost patience and started demanding food again.
New perfume: Chanel Paris – Venise. I practically have it already: a friend is bringing it from a Duty Free (no, not the same friend whose SMS woke me earlier).
Off the island? In the last couple of months I was trying to wear and finish (eventually) decants for which I paid before they spoil or evaporate. As I do that, I ask myself whether I’d miss it once it’s gone. My recent “No” was for Montale Blue Amber. I don’t dislike it but I have many more great ambers than chances to wear them, so I don’t need one more that is just OK.
I’ve just returned from my fall getaway to Hawaii and published earlier today on my blog about all perfumes I took there with me. But if I had to choose just one, it would have been Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess.
????????????Love Blue Amber, wore it twice this past week.
The geranium and coriander linger on my skin, creating a unique aroma for me.
My favorite amber? No.
Off the island? No.
????????????
Different folks, different strokes.
????????????????✌
and so on and so on and shoobeedooobeedoooobe!
????
ewwwww ewwww shasha
u sly 1!
Of course, now I want to wear it again to see if I can smell what you smell 🙂 But then I’ll have to come up with another candidate for exile. Decisions, decisions…
I also LOVE Blue Amber. Every time I wear it I wonder why I don’t wear it more often. I too love the geranium and coriander combo.
Paris-Venise was my favorite of new Chanel trio
Mine, too but I have yet to try the other 2. I have samples living in my purse!
Oh wait…I lied. So far, I liked Deauville the best. Since you and Undina both like Venise, there may be a foregone conclusion that I will like it too!
Need to get these. Deauville sounded perfect.
So many times I took multiple scents on vacation and only wore Bronze Goddess 🙂
1) Either Chanel Chance Eau Tendre or Estee Lauder Sensation (whichever flanker – all of them are exquisite.
3) Maybe Malibu? Or Hawaii. Either would do right about now.
Wore Eau des Missions (sp?) yesterday.
Co-worker: I can smell you as soon as you walked thru the door.
Me: Fantastic! *beams*
Sometimes I just feel like knocking their socks off, lol!
Either one would do for me too!
Oops, that was supposed to be ‘Sensuous’, ha! *blushes*
I just ordered two(!) bottles of perfume, so my answer to the first question is Lampblack (almost out of my decant) and Unsettled, which I plan to bring with me on my trip to Jamaica next month. Celebrating getting a promotion at work. (The purchases, not the trip. The trip is to celebrate 30 years of marriage.)
I am voting Une Rose Chypree off the island. Actually I am just using it up (close to thunking it) and thinking of replacing it with Phi instead.
I so wish I had a fall vacation now – maybe to Yellowstone or Zion. National parks are always less crowded in the off season. I would bring Lonesome Rider or Lonestar Memories. Of course, waiting one month for a great Jamaican vacation is not bad at all,but the past few months have been rough. Our house is still not restored after our summer’s water damage, and my husband’s hernia surgery resulted in some bad nerve damage. He spent most of last week sleeping in a chair, as it was too painful for him to get out of bed, or even roll to his side. Last night was his first night spent entirely in bed. Baby steps, but we will take them.
SOTD is Ambre Russe, because I love it and I can’t wear it to work.
Here’s hoping for your husband’s recovery so he can enjoy that vacation. That’s an awful kind of pain.
So sorry he had complications! Sounds miserable. I hope it’s temporary…
Sounds like you’re way overdue for a holiday! Best wishes for your husband, hope he has a speedy recovery!
Ugh, so glad he is at least back in a bed. And congrats on 30 years!
Jirish, I’m so sorry to hear that your husband is having such difficulty, you never think of nerve damage as a possibility with surgerys- atleast I never have.
You sound bery positive and patient and I applaud you for it, and IMHO think that YOU deserve a lovely bottle of perfume! Best of Luck!
Adding my wishes that your husband will be able to enjoy the special trip that you have planned! Congrats on 30 years of marriage! That is something very special.
Greetings from a Baltic Sea seaside. I’m visiting my grandma and lighting a candle for my grandpa on the occasion of All Saints’ Day that was on Thursday.
1. I’d love more of Rahele from Neela Vermeire with me.
2. Nishane Suede et Safran turned out to be too acrid on my skin and it would disturb me at various moments of the day. I should swap it away or sell it.
3. I’d love to travel to Norway to see the fjords. I would’ve taken Atelier Cologne Emeraude Agar to keep me warm.
Additional question – has anyone tried Memo Moroccan Leather yet?
No, and Luckyscent is out of samples, wahhh! I hear it is very good.
Since I’ve just bought a bottle of OJ Tiare I’m pretty well caught up, but would love to sniff Oud Satin Mood to see whether it is all that and a bag of chips.
It might be time to say goodbye to my split of Sycomore, since like Koyel’s Encre Noir I never know when it will just not work out. In my case, making me sneeze.
I am not too fussed – Capri? Hawaii? Would probably bring the Tiare…
Do you have the EDT or EDP of Sycomore? If the former, I wonder if you’d be interested in a swap of some sort?
I believe it’s the edt. I’d be happy to consider a swap, with the caveat that I am in Canada where that can lead to shipping troubles…
Oic! Hmm. Do you suppose you could email me at ko bhatta at jeemayle to discuss further?
Showered with the Muddled Plum holiday shower gel from Molten Brown. It smells as I expected and as website describes. Rich, deep plum. A bit boozy, and I’m pleased with it for the colder months. Reminded me of Natori, so I sprayed that on after. I swear, though…something happened to my bottle. I always found Natori to be decently strong…some real sillage. I can barely smell it, even initially. I held my wrist up to my husband, and he agreed it was a very light scent. So odd.
Aha, thank you for the report!
My lemming for that shower gel is getting fatter. Does it have glitter? Thanks.
No. There’s an iridescence that I see more in the bottle than noticed on my pouf. Lathers well. My shower was a relatively warm one, so I could try and really get the scent. It’s not as strong-smelling as Rose Jam (which, to me, is quite strong) but I definitely got the scent and was happy it met my expectations. Kind of wish I’d gotten the lotion too….
Adanst also ordered. So maybe another review is coming soon.
Hello all,
Here are my impressions of the Muddled Plum shower gel:
1.The scent is pleasant, would classify it as a light oriental; I get some plums, rum, woods (oud like smell). I like it well enough.
I agree with LizzieB that it is not a strong scent and it doesn’t last long at all (but very pleasant while it does). I find it less strong than other Molton Brown shower gels (such as Rosa Absolute, which is my version of Portrait of a Lady in shower gel form). I could not smell it anymore after drying up.
2. It lathers well and feels creamy.
3. It has shimmering particles but they disappear quickly as it foams.
4. Not sure that I would repurchase but we’ll see. I just started using it today.
I hope this helps????
Yes it does, thanks!
I also find Natori to be rather quiet. Maybe it’s the musks?
I think it just means I need to spray with more abandon!
Nice Bergamonte by Essential Parfums
Still exploring this house , anyone else?
Have a great weekend
1. Encens Mythique or Mendittorosa Rituale (have decanted of both so I am good for a few)
2. A bottle off the island .. Allure. I don’t wear it as often
3. Morocco ????????
You inspired me to pull out EP Mon Vetiver yesterday and compare it to Encre Noir and Hemingway. The result is that I don’t need any more Mon Vetiver, but I’ll finish off my sample. I should wear Nice Bergamote again soon because I really liked it when I first tried it.
1. Dzongkha, but I am kind of cheating because a FB is in transit to me right now. My first FB purchase since last November/December.
2. SL Un Chypre Rouge. It just doesn’t smell good on me, and I regret the purchase, although it was made when I was very much a newbie to perfumeland.
3. Rome, or, if someone could magically pour money into my bank account for a pair of premium economy tickets, Australia (Adelaide, to see my stepdaughter). For Rome, Cristalle Eau Verte and NR for Her, both of which I wore heavily during previous trips to the city. For Australia, I’d go commando and find something new while there.
As long as someone is magically pouring money into your account, you might as well go first class!
Good point. Premium economy, JFK-ADL, is $3200/person in the Qantas “sale.” And that’s for travel in JUNE — i.e., winter and very much the off season. So might as well go first class in January. Oh, and if the money fairy could also buy out my contract for the spring so I could spend the whole semester there, so much the better.
Hi Skalolaszka,
I’d be happy to take Chypre Rouge off your hands. Pay or trade for something?
It’s john dot bordeaux at geemale dot com if you get a notion.
Okay! Let’s see if we can work something out. My gee M address ends in nine nine nine (in numerals), and my first initial is k. I’ll drop you a note.
Don’t hate me for not minding the time change. I’ve always been a night person and I got a happy light to help me wake up in the dark mornings. I think it helps purely because the brightness is so shocking. A piercing smoke alarm might also work, for that matter.
1) I’m resisting temptation to buy right now but in theory: Dusita Erawan (love this!), PdE Le Cri, BF Fontevraud. I’d take any/all of these.
2) Hmmmm. I have a few bottles that get no wear that are slated to go, including Bvlgari Eau The Vert, Ted Lapidus Silk Way. I’m sure I have more.
3) We hardly went anywhere this year, so anywhere out of this city would be great. But we’re talking about a 4 day weekend in New Orleans since I’ve never been.
SOTD: Cavern NY Atrium perfume oil which fits the brisker weather. I’ll be playing a song or 2 with my music school for the runners at tomorrow’s NYC marathon as they pass through in Williamsburg, Bklyn. Much admiration for runners, but running a marathon (or even down the block) is not on my bucket list, lol.
I’m with you! I also don’t mind the time change.
Another night person here (waves). If you go to New Orleans, be sure to visit Hove Parfumeur.
New Orleans is a wonderful city – be sure to eat some chargrilled oysters at Felix’s! Lots of butter on them
Received yesterday Olibanum Profumum Roma, the travel size. Was hoping this would be a long-lasting one, like I find Amber Aurea to be. It’s not oh well. I’ll keep spraying. I’m a fan of falling back, not springing forward.
Voting off the island, Calvin Klein Obsession, Jungle L’Elephant (I like both, even had a compliment for Jungle) just not excited about them as I was hoping.
I have a sample of Olibanum and it wore a full day on me. It turned into a skin scent by the end, but still it was there. But that was in hotter weather – maybe that might be a factor? I hope you get better wear out of it next time!
Oh yay!! Thanks for your reply, I’ve been wearing in cooler temps so I’ll keep trying, and again when it gets warmer!!
Flopper, let me know if you’d be interested in swapping your Jungle 🙂 If I weren’t on a no-buy (for real this time!), I’d have gotten myself a bottle of this already!
Hello all from Detroit Metro Airport. I’m going home for two weeks (Jury duty, VOTING, physical therapy, dentist visit, work/writing…), then will be back again in two weeks to help care for Mom. Lots of stress and worry. I would answer the questions like this:
1. April Aromatics Calling All Angels, maybe also YSL Paris, which I just didn’t buy in the so-called “Duty Free” here at the airport because I’m sure I can get it cheaper online.
2. Probably some oldies I have from early days of collecting such as Euphoria and some awful thing by Mont Blanc.
3. I’d like to go see Paris in the fall just for the picturesque scenes, hoping it would not be too cold. I’d like to take photos in the parks, cemeteries, along the river, Notre Dame, etc. The autumn scenes up here in Michigan have been just splendid.
So sorry for the stress and worry! Glad you will be able to vote!
If I get one more call about voting I will scream, though.
Ditto Robin ! They are blowing uo my phone now too, with texts that I cannot block as they atmre incomplete phone numbers- just strings!
I’m with both of you. This is the first election that I have started getting that dreck on my phone. Do. Not. Want.
My son is 20, and they are contacting us so many times a day — phone and in person! — that I am getting worried they will kidnap him to be absolutely sure he votes. It’s sort of astonishing. They are contacting me too, but not nearly as much as him.
Paris in autumn is lovely but cold!
1. What’s the fragrance you’d most like to add to your collection this fall?
Really I am all set right now. I’d like to smell Moroccan Leather and Fumerie has a line called Moth and Rabbit I’d like to sniff, but there is nothing on my wishlist.
2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?
The Different Company Jasmin de Nuit. I have so many jasmines that I like better, and I’m sure someone else would give this the love and attention it deserves.
3. It’s time for a (fantasy) fall getaway! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.
I was just looking at vacations last night, I’m looking to go somewhere late Feb/early March. I think I might head to French Polynesia, to one of the small islands in the Marquesas. I’d bring Box of Eels. French island, French perfume!
I’m wearing Mohur extrait today.
Fiji is on my travel wishlist. 😉
You smell fabulous!
Ooh I’ll keep an eye out for your Jasmin de Nuit at the next swap meet.
Scent of the day is Champaca, and I wonder why I don’t wear this more often because it’s so lovely.
1. I think it will be Chergui but I need to get better acquaintened with it – a sample is on the way.
2. Eternity Aqua – I got this one for free and it is nice enough, but it just doesn’t stand out. Which just gave me the idea to gift it away for Christmas, hmm.
3. My pick is always London – I adore that city and I always go in the spring/summer, I need to see it in the autumn once. I’d take Galop with me, I think.
You smell great!
London is in my top 3 favorite cities, I’d love to see it in all seasons.
I’m a big London lover too – I have a lot of good memories from my time living there. I didn’t know about niche perfumery then so never went sniffing
1. Parfums de Nicolaï New York Intense. I got a sample recently, and am really liking it. But, so much perfume, so little time, and now I work somewhere that I can’t wear scent…so who knows if I’ll ever get around to buying more.
2. Probably the Acqua di Gio that I bought sometime in the late ’90s, long before I started collecting, and have just held onto for eons thinking I’ll wear it someday and it’ll remind me of the late ’90s. I smelled it on someone the other day, and thought, nope, don’t really want to wear it again, and the late ’90s weren’t that special a time. (Especially as I’ve just finished the second season of the Slow Burn podcast…the late ’90s…sigh.)
3. If money were no barrier? Maybe Spain. I’ve got fond memories of Italy in November (great time to go — wore Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose at Paestum 😉 ). But there’s so much more of Spain I need to see. I’d take PdE Azemour.
So not looking forward to the end of daylight savings. The 4 p.m. “sunsets” (we never see the sun in November…). Blah.
Spain and Italy are tops on my list right now too. I want to go to Granada, and then I want to go to Liguria to eat pesto (I’ve been watching Salt Fat Acid Heat).
I’m in Costes after seeing it mentioned in a very old post here at NST discussing niche snobbery – not sure how I got there, but I woke up really early and needed to amuse myself while waiting for the rest of the household (i.e. Mr. G) to wake up. I enjoy reading the old, de-threaded conversations and trying to guess who some of the commenters are.
My poll answers:
1. Vintage Bel Ami. In the shaker bottle. Dream on.
2. Ivoire. It should have been a love, and I so wanted it to be … but I tried vintage and current formulations and none of them worked for me. Le sigh.
3. This is hard. I’m not a good traveler, but there are so many places I want to see – Skye, Italy, Aix-en-Provence … those are the three in my mind at the moment. Since it’s fantasy, can I combine them into one vacation? I would bring Chanel 19 extrait (also fantasy – I don’t actually own any).
I am glad that is fun, because it still bothers me that we lost the names!
1. I know my weakness and I’m sure I’ll be sprunging for at least a 10 ml of Hyde once it is available. I’ve never disliked any Hiram Greens so a fairly safe bet. I was lemming Le Cri but now that I have a sample I don’t think I’ll need more.
2. Pretty much all the Guerlains I purchased in early perfume days. I respect the house and they all seem so romantic to me but we just don’t get along.
3. Costa Rica is a place a lot have friends have fallen in love with lately and sounds like someplace I’d love. I’d be in the water so much perfume would be a waste, though!
My husband loved Costa Rica years ago and wants to go back. Some day.
Sotd = Ambre Narguile
So nice I wore it twice. I love AN. I have a large Hermes sample vial, every year I make a dent in it. I’m tempted to pour it into a sprayer vial so I can use it up quicker then treat myself to a travel bottle. Gotta dream even tho I’ve sworn I will not buy any more bottles until I thunk something.
1. Add: MEM or CdG Avignon, it’s a tie.
2. Off: PdN Cap Neroli, I love it but my skin turns it bitter, drat!
3. Bye: would love to visit anywhere in Asia. Japan always tops my travel wish list. I would take Geisha Vanilla Hinoki with me.
Saturday cleaning frenzy! I put all my full bottles in a box, then pulled out twelve to put on my dressing table. I wonder how long until I start to want something in that box, a few days, maybe never? 😀
Japan is on the top of our wishlist, too 🙂 I’m confident I’ll manage a trip there in the next few years–if not for pleasure, then definitely for work :-/
Oh, yay! It’s years away for me so I am vicariously excited for u to go to Japan. Bonzai! ????????⛩️
Japan was in my vacation dream list forever. Finally managed to convince my BF. We are going there in march!!!!
Hate changing the clocks. And getting rid of that is on the ballot here in California! I’ll go for that.
1. Just ordered Jicky EdT so I suppose I’m covered there.
2. To go: Baruti Indigo. It bit me last time I wore it.
3. Fantasy trip: New Jersey. No wait, that’s not fantasy, that’s reality. Off to NJ soon for my SIL’s 60th birthday party. An event I have no interest in. Yup gonna be fun. At least we’re finally refusing to sleep on the fold-out torture chamber; husband’s slowly mending broken elbow gives us the excuse to stay in a hotel. Will probably take SL De Profundis, that’s gotten me through all the family dramas this year.
Each week I mean to swap my summer scents for fall/winter, and each week it’s still too warm. Thursday & Friday were shorts days here. This endless summer is going on a bit long…
Welcome to the Garden State–it’s really beautiful here today but windy!! All of the fantastic leaves are coming down in a blast!
Agree! Changing the clocks makes me nuts, and it messes up my internal clock something awful.
Enjoy NJ! It’s a great place to visit this time of year. I miss picking apples at Melick Orchards. SO yummy.
Oooh, when? And will you have time to meet?
We’ll be there in about a week and a half… and I *totally* had plans to go sniffing but that has been nixed thanks to Further Family Drama. We had planned to have a day to ourselves & go into the city but NO. AAAAARG.
What a shame. At least you only have to put up with them on occasion.
SOTD–Regime des Fleurs/Dove Grey….beautiful and cold.
1. Getting dangerously close the end of my Ineke Idylwilde sample, but the no buy rule stays in place for now.
2. Bye bye Eau des Merveilles–I was excited when I bought you, but now you just annoy me.
3. Month in the south of France with Fragonard’s Riviera Riviera of course (plus plenty of packing room for more scents, lavender, honey, olive oil, and wine….)
Just the other day I had on a few spritzes of EdM and someone said it was annoying them! 😀
Agree! Changing the clocks makes me nuts, and it messes up my internal clock something awful.
Enjoy NJ! It’s a great place to visit this time of year. I miss picking apples at Melick Orchards. SO yummy.
oops! meant to post under pixel above 😉
I haven’t been here in weeks, but finally got past the crazy fall schedule. I have missed the SOTD threads.
1. I’m on a solid no buy so I’m ignoring everything and trying to work my current collection.
2. Tried 24, Faubourg again today (afraid to try during the week) and decided it’s just not for me. I have a 15ml travel spray from about 2011 that will be going up in the next swap.
3. Probably missed the time to go but we haven’t been to Vermont or Maine in a while and I love it there in the fall.
I adore 24 Faubourg but alas any more than a half spritz gives me migraine. I have a newish bottle, it’s so pretty I can’t part with it, tho I would give it away if a vintage-ish bottle ever comes my way. I should start going to estate sales, lol
Welcome back!
I’m looking forward to the new Hiram Green, the upcoming Papillon release, upcoming Tauer Vanilla body oil, and the new Areej le Dore releases. Need to retest Aedes Musc Encense to see if I want a FB.
I have a box of stuff that is being voted off the island, too numerous to mention.
Vacation destination: Vancouver Island. Was going to go this month but new puppy intervened, so put off until February.
WHAT Papillon upcoming release?????
Liz made a cryptic reference to an upcoming scent that smell’s like kitten fur. (I believe that’s what she said, it was a while ago) No release date yet.
Wow that’s a lot of exciting new releases!!
Well ….I had to go with Or du Sérail, Naomi Goodsir as it was a split from a fabulous NST’er!! I really like it, it is my. 2nd wearing and I am trying to determine how the tobacco notes and sweet orange play on my. skin. It is smoky bit, in a great way and intriguing as it keeps changing shape – some honey some amber. It goes with everything.
Happy day.
Thank you Nancy!!
You are most welcome, Angela! I’m reading older posts that I’ve inadvertently missed.
I lurve Or du Sérail. You smell great!
You smell wonderful!
Thanks for the time change reminder!
1.
Naja or Onda VdE. But only at a steep discount. I just can’t pay that much for a bottle of perfume even though I think both of them are worth it. I can’t release my financial internal safety mechanism. I just can’t. I might be able if I got 20% discount…not likely, so I’m good with what I’ve got, thank you!
2.
I can’t. I’ve winnowed everything down to my very favorites and have voted many off the island in the process. The rest of them are with me for life, kinda like marriage.
3.
I’m not picky. I’ll go anywhere cool, as long as I’m not working. And have unlimited funds. And my dog has to be able to go with me. Perfume I would take is SL In Bois Vanille because it’s good for every and all occasions.
That’s so great that you have exactly the collection you want right now
Love your #2!
SOTD = Rising Phoenix Sicilian Vanilla
Warming attar for this turning out gorgeous windy day in the northeast. It sure took Fall a long time to come. The leaves are a gorgeous red, orange, yellow, brown, gold, with the sun peeking through the dry fragile leaves and a view of the blue sky and white clouds and the shushshush of the wind rustling the leaves barely hanging on and the ones already fallen swirling across the ground. The colors remind me of the top of the inside of a box of crayons (if you take out black, dark blue, purple and pink).
I felt very accomplished today:
1) I took my car for a required state motor vehicle agency inspection. I got there at 8:45 and was done by 9:20. As much as it pained me to spend over $700 two weeks ago, I don’t think my car would have passed inspection if the tires weren’t changed (never mind dangerous). Mimaslo found out that out DMV entered the 21st century with the website showing wait times for each center!
2) went to the bank and made preparations for when 2 CDs mature. Sadly, I have to go back another time because banks have not moved far along in the 21st century
3) went to two grocery stores. Two more to go tomorrow. Don’t ask.
4) got my hair chopped
5) managed to mail 4 split packages. Speaking of which, the Hermes boutique at Brookfield Place (near the new World Trade Center) is the best! I emailed the SA but did not hear back (I found out he no longer worked there) so I showed up anyway (yesterday). I got lucky because they just reorganized two hours before so everything was easy to find. And they seemed amused that I did not even bother to smell anything, just read off the Hermessences I needed and then the samples request (they were VERY generous as the splitees will see when they get their packages). I was in and out in < 20 minutes!
6) wore a second SOTD (or SOTE, I suppose) – Mona di Orio Santal Nabataea from the Splitmeet. OH MY WORD! It's wonderful. I see a FB when my decant runs out or if I see a discount, I will swoop in! Bonus – this answers Poll question #1.
And woop! We get an extra hour of sleep tonight. I better be able to make it to church in time!
Anyone have an opinion on Long-Term Care Insurance?
“Mimaslo” = I also you knew that, right?
😀
lol, yes I didn’t even notice mimaslo, my eyes read it as i also, so funny how we adapt. 😉
Are you looking for a certain ingredient? And that’s why you are having to make the grocery store rounds? I know you said don’t ask, lol, but that only made me more curious????
Kinda sorta…not to make a specific dish. Zucchini…I could have bought at Wegmans when I was there yesterday but it is cheaper for the same quality at Aldi….same with multigrain flatbread. Papayas of a certain size seem to be available only at Wegmans but mini King Oyster mushrooms (there’s an oxymoron for you) are only available at HMart. I decided to leave Costco for next week but know I have to go to Trader Joe’s at some point in the next 2 weeks to check out the smoked salmon situation (for Thanksgiving Day breakfast).
I’ll see your $700 and raise you $2,200 (I took my car to replace a tire… don’t ask 😉 ).
I see that we had similar chores today. I also had a CD-related activity but I open a new one, in American Express National Bank (online! Which is new to me: until now all my banks/CDs were B&M/in person.)
I have an opinion about the long-term care insurance! I’m sure that I need it, but I don’t know how to choose it and at what age I should start buying it.
The Long-term Care insurance that I was made aware of was payment of $10k per year for 5 years and then you get x benefits when/if you need it down the road for as long as necessary (the insurance will pay a certain amount but you’re still responsible for the balance). I have to read the materials.
I know my mother pays for it, and I know the insurance company is supposed to inform me if she misses a payment — and that is literally all I know except that yes, it has a daily limit on payout.
I hear you on the CD thing. I had one bank take an advance directive to not roll over (it was a small bank, and the officer just made a note in her colander). The other bank wouldn’t do that and told me to call on maturity date or after. I called on the date, but found I had to call back the day after maturity to avoid penalty. Ridiculous that their systems can’t handle an advance directive.
At least my CDs will not automatically roll-over to another CD automatically; however, it means the funds are sitting in limbo. I may have to show up in person to have the funds transferred to my checking account. Aaaaargh.
The Mona di Orio is fantastic!!
I have not even heard of it until the Splitmeet. I’m pretty sure Robin announced but MdO is not one where my heart goes pitter patter when a new perfume is announced.
Wow! Your “Done!” list for yesterday was impressive!
I don’t even want to think about Thanksgiving right now.
LOL…and I am championing the Thanksgiving potluck at work which is a mere 10 days away. We have to hustle with getting people to volunteer to bring food in.
We can get MdO from FiF if you like. 🙂 As for LTC insurance, I don’t plan to buy it. Perhaps things have improved since I last looked into it, but it used to be you had to pay premiums until you claimed, and the premiums would go up so much as the years went by that by the time you got close to needing it you had to cancel because you couldn’t afford the inflated premiums.
Great questions!
1. What’s the fragrance you’d most like to add to your collection this fall?
Realistically: Carat, by Cartier. In my fantasies: Guerlain Muguet 2016.
2. You have to vote one perfume in your collection off the island. Which one will go first, and why?
Sunflowers Dream Petals. Not because I hate it, but because I have EL’s Pure White Linen, which is far superior and of which Dream Petals is a respectable cheap substitute.
3. It’s time for a (fantasy) fall getaway! Where are you going, and pick ONE fragrance to bring with you.
Paris! I’m going to Paris! It has been decades since I was there. I’m going to stay in a super-luxe small hotel in an old “hotel particulier” or other such structure. I’m tempted to say that I won’t take any fragrance because I plan to buy so many during my trip … but I’ll take Amouage Gold Woman so any establishment I visit knows that I came to PLAY.
P.S. The Paris trip is pure fantasy, so my travel and “souvenir” budget are unlimited, lol!
You sounded so excited that for a second I thought you were going 🙂
I have a very vivid imagination, lol! Though to tell the truth, I might delay that fantasy trip to late spring, given fall weather in Paris.
1. I was going to say Lubin Kismet as a potential new buy but then I tried Indochine thanks to a lovely NSTer and ohmygod where has this fragrance been all my life?? I feel deprived that I’m just experiencing this. I wore it to a Diwali party last night and it felt perfect but I’m also going to wear it to run errands today.
2. I think I’m going to have to vote Shalimar off. I really really tried to get along but it’s not working. I even got the ode a la Vanille (mexique) in hopes that more vanilla would do the trick but alas.
3. I’m dying to go to Greece! I wouldn’t take a perfume but try to discover a local brand or perfumery
I will take all the shalimar off your hands whenever you decide to part with it. 🙂
Keep an eye out in the next swap meet! I actually got the OVMexique through the last swap meet so it will be good for it to back in circulation.
I’ll compete with you over the Shalimar ha!
I’m having a rare sunday off, and thought I might rest all day. Unfortunately, I got up to my daughter shaving all her hair off. Why? She said she wanted to donate it. Then declared she wanted it back… sigh…, she’s totally bald. I know it will grow back, I tied one of my Keith Richards scarves around her head. Macy’s is having 15 percent off beauty so I might see if I can get the red chanel on sale.
What?! Oh dear
I’m sorry your Sunday turned out to be… not quite the ordinary but one day it’ll be just a funny story (it is funny already – just not to the participants) and maybe a good teaching moment for your daughter about snap decisions and long consequences. How old is she?
I hope you’ll get your discount though I don’t remember Chanel ever participating in sales – let us know.
As it turns out, Chanel is included in the sale in the stores. The only exclusion, is the red bottles.
Oh no! But such a nice thought of her wanting to donate it.
I can remember when I was a kid receiving a doll for Christmas and cutting the doll’s long hair short (to match mine). I think it was because when we were kids, my Mom made my sister and I get our hair cut REALLY SHORT; lol.. now I have quite long hair and refuse to have it cut short. Talk about a life-long reaction formation!
Best of luck with the Chanel, you deserve a treat after that shock. I have been eyeing up the No 5 oil for awhile and I noticed it was sold out on the website I normally go to. I ordered it yesterday in-store when I was out to make sure I got a bottle.
I cut my dolls hair too. I had a Cher doll with hair to her feet. Eventually, she ended up looking like Mr.T. lol! The red bottle wasn’t on sale, but I plan on getting it anyway. Congrats on getting your oil.
Cher to Mr. T – that’s hilarious ????
Congratulations on your red bottle; enjoy!
Yikes! I have the warm and fuzzies for her wish to donate her hair. Like you said, it will grow back and she will look back to this episode as a manifestation of her budding social conscience. You’re a wonderful mom to have a selfless kid!
And the red Chanel bottle is red. The only way to make it redder is to make it opaque. If you (generically speaking) want RED, go to Starbucks. if you don’t believe me, go see for yourself. Don’t forget to bring your sunglasses.
Thank you for the compliment. She is a very sweet girl. And impulsive!????
I think it’s sweet that your daughter wanted to donate her hair. Where I live there are a couple of high profile events where people can get their hair cut off or shaved to donate to Locks of Love. Is there something like that in your area lillyjo? And does your daughter have a cute hat for winter?
I think you need a warm cuppa and something nice for going thru that today! ☕
I’m not sure if we have locks of love events here. We did go out today and got a cute fallish hat.
lillyjo I think that you are holding up remarkably well!
That is a huge lesson – for all the right reasons, but NOT easy for either of you.
You deserve your red bottle!
Thanks for the heads up on Chanel, I am shocked that their fragrances are included in the sale. Tempting it is…..
I know the SA told me they only include Chanel in stores to bring customers to the actual store instead of online shopping.
I didn’t get to the poll yesterday…
1. Can’t think of anything. I want to explore better what I have.
2. I can think of two to vote out. Lovely, which I bought at TJ Maxx and literally cannot smell. Infusion d’Iris, which, despite all the love here, just does nothing for me.
3. My usual desire in the Fall is to head to Tahoe. We have missed the past couple of years. But, I think a fantasy trip would be Singapore and nearby islands and other countries. I have never had a desire to go to that area, except now that I’ve seen and read Crazy Rich Asians, the area (it’s terrain and food) fascinates me. I’d probably bring OJ Frangipani with me.
#2… and I bet someone here would snap it up if you decide to put it up for a swap
#3… my sister, brother and sister-in-law were there a month ago. My brother kept me in loop with his 10 pictures per day instagram travelogue. The pictures were to die for and he mentioned several times that those were the ones he took with his cell phone (i need to find out what model he has because mine does not take sharp pictures) and not as good as the ones he took with a “real” camera.
Yesterday I did a vetiver comparison pre-shower. Lovestosmellgood reminded me of the Essential Parfums line, so I compared their Mon Vetiver to Hemingway and Encre Noir. Mon Vetiver was very faint and short-lived compared to both of those. Hemingway was stronger, richer, and more expensive smelling than both of the others, which is appropriate because it is quite a bit more expensive. I may do one more head to head with Encre Noir and Hemingway because I’m trying to talk myself out of needing Hemingway. But I may not win against myself because I really do love it!
Last night post shower I put Shea Moisture Frankincense and Myrrh lotion on my legs and arms and topped off my arms with L’Erbolario Meharees. I smelled cozy, rich, and delightful. No scent has been chosen yet today. We’re going to the grocery soon and then to watch the new Suspiria. I’m hoping for the best even though remakes of already great movies make me kind of pissy.
1. High on my list right now are Fille en Aiguilles, Jasmin et Cigarettes, and possibly Hemingway.
2. I’ve got a couple CSPs I’m on the fence about and maybe my two bottles of Tabu because the boyfriend doesn’t like that one. Also, Organza needs to be worn again to decide. I got an unloved large bottle from my boyfriend’s mom, but it seems to wear me.
3. I’ve been craving a tropical vacation since my friend just spent a week in Dominican Repulic laying in the sun, reading, and eating. So I’d go there or any tropical locale and take Orchid Soleil and Soleil Blanc with me. And lots of books!
The SM frankincense and myrhhe is my daily post shower lotion too. I would but a perfume version of it
I hope that your boyfriend is healing well, therabbitsflower!
Thanks, he is! He’s going back to work tomorrow.
I ended up wearing Montale Blue Amber today since it was discussed above. It was perfect.
????????????????????????✌????????????
I don’t mind setting the clocks back an hour, but I do NOT like seeing the sun go down at 4pm. However, I heard someone either on terrestrial radio or the TV say that if the clocks had stayed ahead by an hour the sun would be coming up at 8:30 by the winter solstice! Yuck!
1. I’m on a no buy right now, but I just recently tried my Ungaro Diva sample. Wow, this is wonderful! ????
2. I have a couple of bottles that I am undecided about: Cool Water Wave for Women, and Escada Signature. Pretty sure that I would happily swap the Escada. I should retry the Cool Water Wave to see if I can wear it or not.
3. Hawaii has been on my “I wanna go there!” list since I was 6 years old. I haven’t been there yet. Someday…. ????????
I truly don’t mind the clocks changing this time of year…ask me in the spring and the answer will be different LOL
In any case, it was kind of a shock when it was still light out when I went out around 4PM for the Aldi run and when I was done at around 5PM, it was DARK.
Oooh and PSA – Aldi has all sorts or Advent Calendars with what I think are all chocolate-based treats!
France is on the western edge of the time zone… the sun doesn’t come up there until after 8am in winter. It was weird to get up at 7am in the dark.
I just got back from my dream trip to Italy and Sicily which became a reality after lots of months of planning and several years of fenagling finances. I am saddened about all the terrible weather damage that has happened there since my return. I only brought lots of little samples with me except for one 30 ml bottle of Bruno Fazzolari’s Au Dela. Of course, my new dream is to go there one more time before I am too old to do all the walking, step climbing and navigating.
Congratulations on managing to take your dream trip! I have always wanted to see Sicily.
Super late to a really fun poll. Enjoying everyone’s answers immensely!
I pulled out four bottles to put out on the dresser for fall and noticed that are all Amber based spicy woody orientals and was thinking I need add a beautiful feminine rose perfume to the mix. So I would add Mohur. Voted off the island are Chanel 19 EDT and Parfum Sacre EDP both of which I got on eBay and pretty sure they are counterfeits!
I already had my dream trip, the last three winters in India but would love to do a mini break and take the train down to the big Apple. Soon! I want to see the Hilma af Klint show at the Guggenheim and maybe bring some perfume back with me.
I would love to meet you if time permits!
I would be very honored. I will email you when plans are formed up.
Formed up
I’m super late to the poll too.. I really enjoyed the extra hour if sleep this morning but don’t like the darkness so early now. I think it will be an early night!
Are there any Outlander fans out there? The new season starts tonight! I’m re-watching Season 3 now to get into the frame of mind.
1. Adding to the fold – a bottle of Chanel no 5 oil. No sure if I counts as it’s an oil. Also added a couple of 80’s-ish eBay bottles (so not new) of Raffinee and Lutece. They will meet me in Florida in a couple weeks.
2. I wore a couple sprays of Knowing today. I may vote this off ithe island. Some is a bit off and over bearing.
3. Fantasy is early retirement, although a month vacation at our place in Florida is my fantasy come true! I said to a couple people at work that is my ‘trial retirement’. I worked all year with no summer vacation for this. I’m so ready!
Raffinee and Lutece are beautiful perfumes.
Thanks lillyjo! I think so as well. I’m quite excited for these as they are vintage. I hope they are like I remember!
Very late, but I want to check in to answer the fun poll. It’s actually lunchtime Monday so I’m making a pause.
1. Probably Santal Blanc
2. Kenzo Madly, very few times it hit the spot for incense but I usually find it screechy
3. Bermuda at the moment, and I would take my bottle of Oscar Tropical, a sleeper in my collection and very good with Oscar DNA plus tropical elements just like the name.
Hmm, missed the weekend poll, but here we go anyway:
1. Hiram Green Dilettante
2. I think I’m ready to say goodbye to Bronze Goddess (sorry Robin!)
3. It shall continue to be Thailand until I finally get to go there! I’ll take Zoologist Elephant.
No need for apologies 🙂
