Sir Thomas Sean Connery is 88 today, and we're celebrating with a little Bond poll (it's sort of a repeat of a poll we did way back in 2008).
1. Who is your favorite Bond? (Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig)
2. What fragrance you think their version of Bond would wear?
3. Your all time favorite Bond movie?
4. Who do you think should play James Bond when Daniel Craig retires? Or should Bond just retire and be done with it?
Or, as always, just talk about something else. We don't mind at all.
I like Daniel Craig, although I will admit to a certain fondness for Sean Connery, left over from my childhood years. Since I’m wearing Woman in Gold today, I’m going to suggest that my version of Bond would wear Gold Knight.
I am reading Factfulness, by Hans Rosling, and feeling a little less despairing about the world, which is nice.
Great book, Factfulness — it’s been nice to have numbers to back up my occasional optimism about the state of global public health, birth rates, etc.
Funny, I read that as Forgetfulness. Guess I am frazzled.
I am listening to Factfulness on books on tape during my commute. It has great numbers.
The Onion had an article about Wallace Shawn replacing Daniel Craig as the next Bond ????
Excellent.
Oh, how wonderful that would be!
“Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!”
Ha! Perfect : )
Definitely Sean Connery. I think he would wear something like Chanel Egoiste (which I happen to love on my hubby!).
I think the Bond movies should go on, but it wouldn’t hurt to change to Idris Elba, as some have speculated.
SOTD is Chanel Eau Premiere, but also testing Tom Ford Vanille Fatale (courtesy of the divine Hajusuuri). VF seems to be better with a good, healthy spritz. Looking forward to the swapmeet!
I agree with your Bond comments. And yes, Vanille Fatale needs a heavy hand. I have a small decant and spray liberally in order to get the proper effect.
Ooh Idris Elba would be brilliant!! *pant pant*
He would yes.BUT!Idris will always be Luther for me.What a brilliant series that was!
I binge watched that series!!!!!!
Haha!Me too!And bought it on oldschool dvd when it came out!????????????????
I strongly associated him with Stringer Bell for many years until I saw him in films. He can do both with aplomb. And I do think he’s sexier with his real accent than an American one.
I tried to watch Luther but it was too violent and creepy for me š
Yes!!
Ok I know this is a horrifically unpopular opinion, but…I don’t think Idris Elba is very hot anymore *runs away and hides*
Ok I just checked and he’s only 45, but…he looks…old.
Although when his shirt is off, who’s looking at his face anyway?
All right, I just looked up Daniel Craig, and he’s pretty weird looking too. So I guess Idris Elba would fit right in?
It’s not necessarily that I find Idris Elba hot, but he has the sex appeal and elegance the role requires, like he was born to play him. Agreed on Daniel Craig – not hot. But I like him as Bond. (And really, Sean Connery’s goofy-looking, too.)
Ok, Iāll agree on elegance and sex appeal š As you can see, I donāt understand which attributes are important to look for in a Bond.
Clearly, there’s no agreement on said attributes!
See way belowāHenry Cavill instead?
Hmm…I acknowledge that heās hot, but he also looks kind of evil. I guess Iām picky.
Idris is my Bond choice too. Daniel Craig brought out the tougher side of Bond, Idris would be great at bringing the toughness and the charm to that character. And yes, all Bonds would wear Egoiste.
Luther was amazing but my favorite character was the enigmatic Alice!
The first Bond I saw was Live & Let Die and it’s still my favorite, even though it’s surely one of the dumbest (and even for Bond, awfully low on the PC scale as well). So I’m going with Roger Moore.
I remember seeing that one… I loved the song and Geoffrey Holder was fabulous. It is dumb, but itās a good one.
Live & Let Die, yes! Camp, cheesy, downright offensive in places and inexplicably the one.
Fave Bond is Daniel Craig, though. Sean Connery came close but Daniel Craig makes the roguery real.
Eau Sauvage is /the/ standard English gentlemanās cologne for me so thatās a no-brainer…
… as is Idris! Tom Hardy is up there too but a bit too close in type to Daniel Craig to my mildly warped mind.
Oh yes! Was favoring Idris but Tom Hardy would be perfect. That man in a tux – yowza.
Although Iām no good at remembering specific Bond titles/plots, without a doubt my favourite Bond was Sean Connery. I always loved his voice and rough sexiness.
Today I am defying the heat with Mona di Orio Cuir.
His voice is perfect. All Bonds should use it š
But his lateralized lisp used to drive me crazy!
Ha, but that’s the best part!
????????????
Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan. Slightly off topic, but my favorite Bond Girl is Carole Bouquet in For Your Eyes Only.
SOTD is Providence Perfume Co Violet Beauregarde.
I am leaving for London this coming Friday. We will be there for two days, then taking train to Paris. I am very excited !
The first day in Paris, we will visit Guerlain and eat lunch in the restaurant there. Then we will move on to visit/shop at Jovoy, Chanel, Lanvin, Laduree and eventually end up at Harry’s New York Bar for a cocktail.
Any other suggestions?
Oh my gosh! What a great Paris plan. How about Nicolai? I think for stores, Printemps is lovely…
Thanks ! Great idea for Nicolai. I sent off for a sample of Cap Neroli, and do enjoy it š
Le Musee du Parfum Fragonard near the Opera House and really close to Printemps (meh) and Galeries Lafayette (you need to see the dome). There’s an English tour in the morning around 11 – this is from memory so you would want to check for more current info. I think you know this already but just in case…there is a one hour time difference between Paris and London. Have fun!
I did not know about the time difference. Thanks !
I have never been to London before. I am so excited š
While in London I recommend Bloom Perfumery in Covent Garden, just down from Paul Smith on Floral Street, samples cost Ā£2, and Les Sentaurs on Elizabeth street in Belgravia, (near the Kings road) they will give you free samples in non spray vials which u can decant into spray vials. And of course Liberty is not to be missed!
And if you go to Les Sentaurs on Elizabeth Street, you may as well pop into Jo Loves, across the street about 2 blocks away.
That sounds so fun! I have no suggestions, but I hope you have a fantastic time.
Thank you !! I have been looking forward to this for a long time š
I was never a Bond fan, but I do remember seeing the Pierce Brosnan movies when I was young. Even though Connery is much more magnetic, Brosnan all registers as Bond to me.
I’m in Choc by Cardin today, bitter green and very dry. Doesn’t last too long, but I love it while it lasts. Has anyone smelled the more current formulation?
Then I found a bottle of Spellbound for a song at a local antique store and gave as small a spray as possible to the back of my head. I have a feeling it’ll be my perfume tomorrow, whether I want it to be or not!
Hand, not head. Not that brave.
I was going to say, it will be on your pillow too!
On my couch cushions, more likely. I don’t think my boyfriend is going to be a fan for the first few hours. š
I have one more week until I’ll be leaving on my summer holidays but I already started to collect all the things that I need today, so that I don’t forget about anything or have to chase after something in last minute.
SotD is Jul et Mad Fugit Amor, my skin turns it into a totally different perfume than what it was supposed to smell like. On me it’s a very clean, barber soap styled scent. And that I love.
Have a good weekend all.
I love the way you plan your vacations so studiously! I do the same thing, as I tend to be near paralyzed with fear that I’ll forget something critical (and despite my planning I almost always do.)
lol, I over prepare before travel too. I take some pressure off by remembering I always forget “the two things.” Then later on when I am on vacation and realize what “the two things” are I can laugh about it twice. As long as it’s not my passport. Or credit card. š
Though it is much work, holiday preparations always make me happy. š
Love the name Fugit Amor. You smell great.
I am indifferent to Bond so I cannot really chose a favorite. I do know that Melograno was worn by one of the female characters and I can wear that in my mind since its been thunked.
Today I am wearing Assam of India…perfumelover67 was right…I am reading frankincense on my skin. It’s glorious.
I also sprayed a tiny amount of Heaven on the upper portion of my arm. I am blaming Undina(due to her recent post) and cassieflower (for bringing to my attention where to get it) for now making me want a back up bottle. After my firm resolve of NO BUYS I might just cave as it is so cheap on ebay right now.
I like Assam of India too but no frankincense. It has a black tea smokiness though.
Ha! that’s funny lucas because spring pansy was asking yesterday if it was smoky. I don’t really get the smoke…but my nose isn’t the most reliable. I get a huge amount of lemon, a bit of tea and in the winter I smell more of the sandalwood. But today I am getting the frankincense, enough for it to be a distant cousin of Heeley’s Cardinal (one of my favorite incense fragrances)
Interesting that you get such intense incense from it
I wouldn’t say “intense” but it is definitely there..the frankincense.
I donāt get frankincense either, but I will have to retry this week and see if I can find it.
What are you smelling? Just out of curiosity…for me Assam is different depending on the weather.
To my nose it is straight up green tea. It reminds me a lot (I know Iāve said this before) of Lāoccitaneās The Vert, which I loved.
I havenāt tried Assam in different weather though….I will have to try it again this fall as the weather turns cooler.
ah..yes, I could see that…it’s funny how we all smell something different š For this reason alone I could see Assam as a year round scent. It is also very uplifting in the cold winters…..
I am glad that you are getting frankincense in Assam of India. I though my nose was playing tricks on me. I am wearing it today and I can smell it. It is not strong, but in the background and it is delicious! Every nose is different and I am sure not everyone will get it. I do not get the sandalwood much, which is a big advantage for me, since you know that I have a hard time with that note.
LIke I said before , I don’t think Berdoues lists all the notes. I don’t really get the sandalwood either in the summer but in the winter it is mildly there. I like it even more now though that I can hone in on the frankincense.
And I am going to turn you into a sandalwood lover, my dear, because you need to try the real deal versus the synthetic which some folks don’t care for.
You have a big challenge in front of you. Hope to be a sandalwood convert some day! ????
????????????????
and I will rise to that challenge-LOL!!!
1.)Favorite Bond definitely Sean Connery, followed closely by Daniel Craig(coming out of the sea in a speedo….????????āāļø????????āāļøāŗļø)
2.)Amouage Gold for Sean Connery,Eau Sauvage vintage for Daniel Craig
3.)Favorite Bond movie ever is Goldfinger!!So much fun!Which brings me to my favorite Bond Girl ever also,Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore!-also explains my choice in fragrance for Sean Connery…lol(Honor Blackman is 93 years old,by the way!)
4.)If they keep the storyline interesting it surely can continue forever! My choice?Tom Hardy.Or Simon Baker.
SOTD SMN Iris.Medicinal,Herbal…wonderful.X
Definitely Tom Hardy.
Oh yes, Tom Hardy would be a great choice.
Johanob, agree with your Bond choices. Loved Honor Blackman but Eva Greene is a pretty strong second for female lead. Favorite movie is Skyfall – more moral conflict than the early Bond movies; it made me sad when M died. When the evil guy blew up the Aston Martin I almost had a heart attack. Connery would wear Eau Sauvage vintage with his Rolex; Craig might wear Eight and Bob with his Omega.
SoTD No 19.
Participated in Friday thing but reporting late – wore SL Daim Blond. I never need to do that again. And it upset some co-workers even though it was a teeny spray, just one. Meridifay, feel your pain.
Enjoy the day, all.
Iām sorry about your cranky coworkers. I hope you rest of your weekend!
Thanks Nancy! You too. Sunny and dry here, not too hot, so all is well.
I think this would put me in minority but I like Timothy Dalton. I think he was only in a couple of movies.
I would pair him with original (prior to reformulation) Fahrenheit. That is my all time favorite male cologne
The original Fahrenheit was so good. My girlfriends and I loved it so much in college, one of them bought it for herself and wore it all the time. She always smelled so good!
Fahrenheit fan here as well. I have a vintage mini, so carefully just a tad now and again.
So I am curious — which actor was in the first Bond movie you ever saw?
Sean Connery. I think the first one was Goldfinger
Ok, interesting! I was assuming you would say Dalton.
Dalton is not a popular choice but License To Kill is my favourite Bond movie so Dalton is my favourite Bond. (It’s mostly because of Carey Lowell though to be honest.)
Not really a Bond fan.
He’d wear something refined and British, probably Tabarome by Creed (“If it was good enough for Churchill, it’s good enough for me”). She’d absolutely wear White Linen (“Out of my way, I’ve got people to kill”).
Iād have to say Sean Connery, since Iām of the age where he equals Bond. But…Daniel Craig is very good. I think Idris Elba would be a fabulous choice. Bond should go on forever.
Favorite…hmmm…Iāve always had a fondness for You Only Live Twice for some reason. And I liked Tomorrow Never Dies simply because of Michelle Yeoh. Diamonds Are Forever is the biggest kick to me. āBaja? I havenāt got anything at Baja!ā
Fond memories of going with friends to a triple feature at my hometown theater when I was in high school.
Iām wearing Narciso today…because of the daily lemming.
No fragrance ideas… I would hope one of them would wear Eau Sauvage….
Hah! I hadnāt seen johanobās response yet on Eau Sauvage…
You smell great! I havenāt worn that one in the heat of the summer, I picked up a travel spray of the edt to try instead. The edt is definitely lighter and easier to wear (for me) but doesnāt have nearly the lasting power that White Cube does. I was happy to see itās 5 star rating in the new Guide.
The PoudrƩe version is very nice also.
Even though I am shocked to hear myself saying this, I’d endorse Daniel Craig (feels like such a betrayal of Sir Sean, whom I adore). Daniel Craig just has a somewhat beat-up look that is very appealing. I, like Johanob, love Goldfinger but I think Skyfall is my favourite, because of the tragic scene at the end with M, and because… Javier Bardem!!! The Bond villains are just THE BEST, and I must give a bow to Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen). Idris is super but is too old to be Bond and has said he won’t do it. Maybe we need an Asian or Indian Bond?
I’ll take an Indian Bond š
Oh I would jump on this bandwagon too.Sharukh Khan anyone?āŗļøā????
LOL — I love SRK but he is way too old to be Bond!
That makes me old cause he was born the same year I was! LOL!!!!!
Why?!Heās only 52!Lol
What age does everyone picture Bond to be? I feel like as a man of experience heās late 30s at the very least. I think 40s.
40s, though I’d guess some of the actors were younger than that their first time out?
In the original book he is 36.
Oh yes!!!!! Now we are talking!!!!
and johanob- Mr. CM8 makes fun of me because lately all I have been watching are the Indian detective shows š
Haha!Enjoy!!I loved SRK in a movie called Main Hoon Na,my favorite of his!
Which Indian detective shows??
Robin, off the top of my head at 1 am three on Netflix…Sacred Games ( which Kevin did not like..I just started it) the Indian Detective ( he is hysterical and his female partner is gorgeous) and another one who’s name escapes me at the moment but I will look it up tomorrow morning on my queue when everyone is awake
Ok the one I could not remember is Anjaan Special Crimes Unit . Sometimes it gets a bit silly but there’s a supernatural twist to it which I like.
Thank you CM8! I am always keeping lists of what to watch next.
What about Ken Watanabe?
Oh another hottie.I enjoyed him in Inception!
Too old??? I don’t associate Bond with youth.
Oh, have to disagree. A touch of grey is fine, but he can’t look like his joints are getting achy or whatnot. Roger Moore stayed in the role way too long.
So Daniel Craig is too old at 50? (Sean Connery stayed too long, too, IMO.)
To my mind, 007 needs to be a gentleman, and too young is just as risky as too old.
Agree you don’t want too young. The books generally put him in his late-ish 30s, and that makes sense given what he’s doing.
Thinking of Idris made me think of the guy in Marcella…Nicholas Pinnock. He wears a suit nicely but has a very dangerous edge.
Javier! ????
Skyfall is my favorite too, the train scene in the beginning is stunning! Daniel Craig has been my favorite Bond, Sean Connery not withstanding, but my husband is much more a fan of Bond than I am. My favorite parts are the cool things Q comes up with.
I second Skyfall, for Daniel Craig, the train scene and that house! Sean Connery and Daniel Craig are tied for first in my book. Would endorse either Idris or Tom Hardy heartily, and I find as I age I have no problem with aging Bonds (as long as they seem super fit for all those antics). I’d go with Musc Ravageur for Idris and Aventus for Tom.
And always enjoy a Bond movie, so happy to see it go on and on….
Since I came of age during the 80ās I would have to say my favorite Bond is Roger Moore, although I would also have to say that I think Sean Connery was the ābestā James Bond.(if that makes any sense)
Another vote for Eau Sauvage. I donāt really have a favorite movie, so how about a favorite Bond song? Definitely A View to a Kill by Duran Duran.
SotD is OJ Tiare. Iām revisiting my sample set. This one feels kind of Chanel-y to me. Iām not noticing as much of that OJ base as I do in Woman, Champaca and Osmanthus. Tomorrowās SotD will be Taāif.
I looooove OJ Tiare. You smell great.
I agree about Tiare being Chanel-ish.
Wow, Roger Moore was a hottie in his youth! Maybe I should find one of his movies to watch.
Happy birthday, Sean!
Wearing Narciso Musk for Her Oil (the original one from 2007, always in my top 5). Smoke is back (Seattle), ugh. When will the fires end?
I am so looking forward to some fun with the upcoming swapmeet, splitmeet, etc.
So sorry about the smoke!
I love Daniel Craig as Bond also. All those rough edges make him all too human. I love Goldfinger. Tacky, sexist and overblown as it is. I think my Bond would wear Chanel Pour Homme when working and Papillon Anubis for his own pleasure. I believe the world is ready for Bond to be a.)gay b.)a woman and c.)possess a heritage more reflective of the actual racial diversity of the planet and none of these qualifications are mutually exclusive. I think Danai Gurira could rock Bond! Wearing the super addictive Jo Malone Cardamon Mimosa body cream kindly provided by a wonderful Nordstrom SA. When it calms down a bit, I will add a spritz or two of YSL Cinema.
Only speaking for myself, I’m neither ready for a female nor gay Bond. Maleness and overt heterosexuality are intrinsic to the character. It would need to be an entirely different series to feature a woman woman and/or gay protagonist. Whiteness, however, is not inseparable from the character, and the Idris Elba rumors need to come to fruition ????????
I think he just said no, not happening, a few days ago. Not sure if that means he knows he’s not in the running, or he just doesn’t want it.
I like to think that he just hasn’t been offered the role yet. And won’t turn it down when the offer is made š
I tend to agree with you,as a gay man.Bond is overtly heterosexual, and thatās a huge part of the character! And charm!Let Jason Bourne rather ācome outā,LOLOLOL!
This is a great idea!
Hmm. I think it is that overt heterosexuality and dollop of misogyny that has kept me from enjoying the Bond movies, so I guess I kind of agree with you. I might, though, be pleased if Bond himself evolved with the times.
Question about continuity: Are all the Bonds supposed to be the same man? Or is it SUPPOSED to be a series of people? Is James Bond more of a title than a name?
I’ve seen them called “a series of series”, and in general, there wasn’t much of an ongoing storyline even within the series until the Daniel Craig reboot.
Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan were very handsome Bonds but their movies were quite silly. To me Sean is the only Bond. I think he would wear Demeter’s Martini.
Anyone smelled the perfumes from the M.INT line yet? They just launched in SA(South Africa for future reference)and I am intrigued. The space age bottles are really cool.
First few times I tried to google the company I got a list of mint scented perfumes.
Intense looking bottles! I would never have guessed it was an Italian company based on those bottles. Let us know if youāve tried any.
Thanks for all your kind wishes yesterday! Husband is doing pretty well today, and we are both glad for a good night’s sleep last night.
I have a not-so-secret love for Bond movies. Roger Moore was Bond when I started watching them, so I have a soft spot for him. My favorite Bond movies are Octopussy (love that island mansion!) and View To A Kill (Grace Jones! Christopher Walken! Duran Duran!) Though Judi Dench is my favorite M. And my favorite opening sequences are the Beach Boys bit in View To A Kill, and the parachute jump in The Spy Who Loved Me. Oh and I loved Geoffrey Holder’s laugh. And… yeah ok I’ll stop here. š
I’m happy to hear Mr. Pixel is doing well. Wishing him a speedy recovery!
I love Judi Dench as M. as well.
Thrilled to hear he’s doing well!!!
I missed the updates, but hope your post means Mr. Pixel got his surgery and is recovering. Nothing like sleep for healing!
Sean Connery will always be Bond to me. I think he should wear MKK. I haven’t seen all the movies, I’m not much of a movie-goer so I don’t have a favorite, but of the books I liked Goldfinger the best.
Today I’m wearing Lolita Lempicka because it’s cooler here and I’m just lolling around. I started out in Satori Satori, a sample I liked very much, but it lasted two hours on me and costs $175 for 50mls. No, thank you.
Oh dear, Satori Satori does not come out well in cost-per-sniff at all. Douceur de Siam is similar, but it’s so pretty I don’t regret the purchase, despite its being half gone after only a year.
That Satori is pretty tho!
I’ve never liked James Bond (ducks) – I think the only Bond movie I’ve ever seen is the one with Eva Green, as I am a big fan of hers. Casino Royale? Anyway, I recommend the show Killing Eve to anyone who likes spy thrillers!
My husband is out of town and my 4yo has informed me that she doesn’t want to go anywhere today, not even Starbucks. Oy. On the plu side, I’m giving Iris Rebelle another shot and I think I’m starting to like it?
Oh I am with your 4 year old.20:12 over here, and I did not even open the shutters today.People started to text me to hear if Iām OK!Lol.Badly needed me-day.
Oh, I’d love a me-day – this is more of a her-day . . .
You smell nice! Enjoy your staying in š
Ohhh, Mr. Bond. I canāt choose a single favorite from among Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan, and I donāt care for any of the others much. Canāt choose a favorite Bond movie either because they all blend together in my head – theyāre all great fun, even if they are very non-PC by current standards. Bond would wear Eau Sauvage – no doubt about it. Iām on the fence about who should play the next Bond, but I was reading an interview with Kerry Greenwood (the author of the Phryne Fisher mysteries) the other day, and she described Phryne as a sort of female James Bond, strong, smart, and able to do anything flawlessly even if sheād never done it before, and now I think perhaps it might be time for a female 007. She would wear Eau Sauvage too. Rawr.
Iām in Costes this morning, and Mr. G is making eggs and some delectable-smelling sausage for breakfast. ????
Agree with Eau Sauvage, unless it’s Guerlain Vetiver.
Finished a Tom and Lorenzo podcast literally a few minutes ago on this topic, and one interesting suggestion was Edward Holcroft. Scrub him up and he just might be the winner in the Tuxedo category.
Ah, I was thinking of mentioning their current nominee, Henry Golding (I think), the guy from Crazy Rich Asians. They think Idris Elba doesn’t like to dress up enough to do the “pole-dancing” for the Bond role.
Henry Golding! swoooooon š
After doing a completely ridiculous amount of research on potential new Bonds, I have to say that Henry Golding seems the most likely to be able to assume the 007 mantle. Plus, yum.
Just saw Hajusuuri mention him below. Havenāt followed any of the gossip on this, but I agree Henry Golding is a great pick! Way down I make some suggestions. If I had thought of Golding, I would have made him my first choice.
Wearing MDCI Un Coeur en Mai. Such a beautiful scent.
Just installed my perfume cabinet in the new house last night and have really truly missed it in the last few months.
That said, it made me see things that would have fit yesterdayās CPā such as YSL In Love Again. Why donāt I love it now? Rose Ikebana and Kelly Caleche Parfum are much more fitting of current tastes and scratch that itch.
Others: Tea for Two which I thought was so strange and smoky but not is too sweet and tame for my liking.
Yay for getting your perfumes settled!
Wait and see…sometimes I come back around to things I thought I’d given up on. But do understand your feelings about Tea for Two — I used to think it was strange too, and now, no.
I’ll have to day Roger Moore, also because the 80s was my era and I saw some of thos in the theater. The only other I’ve seen in the theater was Skyfall, which I wasn’t into.
A View to a Kill probably my favorite because, Grace Jones!
She’d wear Jubilation 25 or maybe Paloma Picasso. I think Roger Moore might be am Aventus guy.
And as I commented earlier, I do think Wallace Shawn should be the final Bond, lol.
SOTD a smidge of Dior La Colle Noire which I got in the STC 8ml sale. It’s nice enough- smells a little like the Byredo Rose Noir.
Wallace Shawn would be perfect.
Wallace Shawn! PERFECT denouement to the Bond franchise. I imagine the last scene with him sitting on a stool holding a book bigger than him, closing it as he says good night to his audience of little kids.
I adore Grace Jones! And she would be fabulous in PP!
Having seen the very amusing documentary “Becoming Bond”, I’m going to go waaaaay out on the connoisseur’s limb and say George Lazenby. He was the REAL con artist Bond and as such, couldn’t stand actually playing Bond. Many ranking lists, as at Digital Spy and Esquire, therefore call “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” the best film. I do still have leftover affection for Connery, though, and have to say my favourite of the older ones is probably “From Russia with Love”, partially because Robert Shaw is probably the best villain / antihero ever (see also: Jaws, The Sting, etc.)
My husband is with you re Lazenby and OHMSS. Many think it was the best film.
Robert Shaw was the BOMB! ????
ABSOLUTELY, DITTO!!!
SOTD = L’AP Safran Troublant with remnants of Cuir Beluga
Woody pudding, anyone?
Like cazaubon, I’m no good at remembering titles and plots. My favorite Bond is Daniel Craig and I think he is just quirky enough and confident in his masculinity that he would wear something unexpected like Mohir Extrait or Lyric Woman.
For the next Bond, I would pick Henry Golding when he’s a little older.
Yes, please to Henry Golding. Listening to the audiobook of Crazy Rich Asians in my car right now and enjoying it very much. The movie will have to wait until I’m done.
And do listen to the 2nd book, too. The movie picked up a few things from the 2nd one.
Henry Golding? Great idea!
I haven’t seen CRA yet, but I’ve heard Golding’s voice on clips from the movie in NPR interviews, and his voice is pretty gorgeous. So I’ll second that motion. (Though why wait until he’s older?)
He still looks like he has some baby fat. He needs to look somewhat battle-worn from age rather than experience.
My favorite Bond is Sean Connery. I’ve seen many Bond movies and remember none of them, although the songs stay in my head. “The World is Not Enough” by Garbage is my favorite.
I think I read somewhere that Sean Connery wore Jicky, so that’s how I’ve always imagined him smelling.
My SOTD is Baie Rose 26 from a sample. I wanted to buy a bottle last year when the city exclusives were available, but decided to buy 3 more samples and see if I drained them in the year. Well, I’m still on sample number 1 of that trio, so I guess I don’t have to buy a bottle this September.
That’s the one that’s been sneaking up on me when I sample it!
It’s lovely, isn’t it? I am flip flopping about buying the 15 ml bottle.
I don’t remember any of them either, at least in specifics. They all kind of blend together in my mind.
Hello all!
I’ve been gone for awhile, first on vacation and then recovering from the inevitable flight-caught cold I got on my return. Good to be catching up here. My favorite Bond is Daniel Craig, favorite movie Casino Royale. I’ll be sad to see Craig go, even though I didn’t like the last Bond movie much. Would love to see him replaced with Idris Elba or Tom Hardy. SOTD is a haze of Incense Rose, because it’s my day off and I can.
I hope you’re fully recovered! It’s odd, Daniel Craig as Bond left me indifferent, but Daniel Craig in Layer Cake was like a lightning bolt.
You smell beautiful. I love Incense Rose.
Hope you had a great vacation Jirish!
I’m definitely in the Sean Connery camp, my father took me to see a couple of the Connery movies when I was about 10, and I was imprinted for life š The older movies are getting a bit dated now, but I still love them – I have the 50th anniversary box set, which has all of them up to Skyfall.
Daniel Craig comes second for me, I agree with lots of others that he is a bit more craggy and real. Timothy Dalton wasn’t the best Bond, but I’d have loved to see more of him. That’s another imprinting from youth – he made a wonderful Heathcliff in a 1970 version of Wuthering Heights.
I vote for Idris Elba next. He is at the older end of the scale, but he’d be good for a couple!
As for what any Bond might wear, I have no idea. I know all about perfumes I like on me, but nothing much about what I like to smell on others. Thinking of sultry Bond villainesses, though, I can see a role for Jubilation 25, or Salome.
I’m off to clean the bathroom, after which I’m planning to go for a walk and do some more testing of Frederic Malle’s Portrait of a Lady.
Do you remember how they used to play ‘God Save the Queen’ before movies back in the 60s, and we all had to stand. And intermissions!
Really? Sort of a bonding moment for the audience no doubt, even if it reeks of nostalgia for colonialism. My husband, who is 53, has no recollection of God Save the Queen being played in movie theaters in Scotland when he was growing upā but he does have a terrible memory!
OMG, Timothy Dalton positively smoldered thru that version of Wuthering Heights. (wipes a wee bit of drool off my chin)
Sean Connery will always be the ultimate James Bond to me. Dashing, suave, can take a punch & likes his martinis a certain way. He is a true legend. Good luck to the next pick. So many interpretations to follow successfully. I have no replacements in my mind. As for a fragrance he wears, it has to be something special, unique defining his character. Maybe a MFK
Scentless this morning, but later Iām going to my Grandmaās 105th birthday dinner. Iāll probably wear Baiser VolĆ© which I usually associate with family gatherings.
105??Wowzersā¦HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDMA!We need to know her secrets….ā????ā¤ļø
Wow! Happy Birthday!
Holy cow! That’s amazing! Enjoy her milestone.
Wow for Grandma and happy birthday to her! Does she have a birthday card from the President (or the Queen)?
Thanks for your well wishes! When she turned 100, she might have got a letter from the mayor or something.
That is fantastic! Happy 105th to your grandma ????
Happy 105th to your grandmother!
Wow! 105! Happy Birthday to your grandma, SunnyDay!
Happy birthday to your grandmother!
Hope your Grandmother had a fabulous Birthday!
Wow, 105! Congratulations to your grandma, and your family as well.
I…can’t really participate in this lazy weekend poll, because I’ve watched MAYBE two Bond movies, and I’m not even sure who played Bond in them. I’m not even sure which two movies I might’ve watched. Goldfinger, I think? And then one of the newest ones, the one with the Adele song? Skyfall, perhaps?
And I am therefore unrelatedly wearing SHL 777 Rose de Petra, from a decant from a swap with a wonderful NSTer! It’s gooooorgeous. I’m not sure if it should go on my FB list, but it’s definitely on my decant list.
Informal split time! Some of you may recall my vow earlier this year to be willing to split off part of all FBs > 30 mL that I buy. To that end, is anyone interested in a split of SL Sa MajestĆ© la Rose? It’s on Fragrancenet for $67.89 with 30 % off coupon, so a 10-mL split would be $6.80 + heavy-gauge atomizer & shipping = $12. Actually, I’ve already bought it, because even if no one wants any, I’ve fulfilled my vow by offering the splits š but I’m happy to split away 20 mL! Please e-mail me at ko bhatta at geemail if you’re interested.
Uhhhh i canāt do math. Itās $13.60/10 ml + $5 for bottle/shipping.
James Bond! One of the earliest movies I remember seeing in a theater. My mom was a huge fan, and I was transfixed by the movie opening and music from say, way back. Donāt have any opinion about who should play Bond other than someone very refined, classy, and mischievous, with a rapier wit. Personally, I donāt think thatās Daniel Craig. YMMV.
Still wearing Au Dela and loving it. ā????
Sean Connery – he got better as he aged, and in costume dramas. I loved him in The Name of the Rose. Some medieval incense smelling thingie, some masculine version of Avignon, or maybe that Oriza Le Grand Relique d’Amour or something like that? I don’t know masculine incensey perfumes.
I myself, after reading the review of the new DSH perfumes, am wearing one of my favorites – Oeilettes Rouges, which aroused the ire of perfume sensitive people at work. Someone left a note outside my door with Unacceptable! scrawled across the perfume policy…so now i wear it at home and I think I smell great and adorable hubby apparently doesn’t register it at all. š
re: Bond in particular, I sort of feel like that franchise has run its course. Most of the women in the Bond movies were just too much the masculine fantasy. I don’t recall a single one of them that I much related to…and I have seen most of the movies. Miss Moneypenny is really the only character I remember – all the bimbos were just bimbos. Maybe my recollection is jaundiced. Please do correct me if I have missed something. I would be willing to watch some of them again to see… š
Iāve enjoyed various Bonds over the years with shifting favorite actors, but I feel as you do now that the franchise has run its course for me.
Well, Judi Dench became M, and was terrific in the role. Eva Greene was no bimbo, but a tragic heroine.
Ditto this.
Wow, your coworkers sound needlessly aggressive š
Ms Moneypenny is my favorite Bond girl as well.
I love the way old franchises get reinvented. A silly brain game I play on long drives is thinking of updated versions of movies or books… not necessarily because the original is irrelevant ( but I agree that the women in Bondās life really do need to be updated if the franchise is going to continue) but just because….
Oeillets Rouges is one of my favorite DSH perfumes, too! My version must have been super concentrated as it had already gummed up 3 atomizers. Anyway, boo hiss on your co-workers!
Boo hiss on your passive aggressive coworkers. If it bothered someone so much, they should have just talked to you.
Your coworker stinks! Literally.
I agree with all you write. For me Bond has run its course. Best to have fond memories
I agree that the Perfume Policy is Unacceptable!!
Ha!
I’d like to be the next Bond. I could do with $150 million and I think its time Bond embraced the power of passive aggressiveness.
Wearing Dioressence – shaken not stirred.
Bwa ha!
I could be the next Bond, if all that was required was great attention to detail and a whole lot of patience.
I think that would be a very dull movie.
You could be the kind of Bond who double checks hotel bookings and flights, packs carefully, carries parking meter money, queues for tickets to the opera, galleries etc., picks up dry cleaning, writes things down in a notebook, and offers to pay for breakages.
Actually, I think you could turn all that into a great comedic film, given the right actor. Sincere slightly wide-eyed determination to do the right thing in the face of bumbling ineptitude, vicious failures of attention, other people being overwhelmed, and the occasional encounter with simple meanness, you know? Think Peter Sellers, Steve Martin…not sure who this era’s heir to that tradition is, though.
Stephen Merchant would be great in that type of role!
Steve Carell!
WALLACE SHAWN
Jim Carrey!
Lol! If I were the next Bond, I would work for minimum wage and fix everybody’s problems but my own. Plus smell good, of course ????
Ha!!!
You get my vote
Ditto this
You have my vote ????
Could I be your daffodil-loving sidekick :). ?
Jeanne Kill
Great!
Since Idris Elba has withdrawn from the running, I saw something online that suggested Henry Cavill of the most recent Superman incarnation. Heās British and only 35…
Or Max Irons, perhaps.
No.
He’s handsome but a terrible dresser, and too beefy to look nice in a tux.
I woke up on the wrong side of the bed anticipating an annoying day at work (and getting it), so of course to bolster myself SOTD had to be Jacomo Silences PDT.
And I unexpectedly thunked my trial mini, because itās opaque black! What do you think my next bottle size should be, if I need this psychic armor in my life? 50 or 100 mls?
Is your gravatar a Hopi symbol? The maze pattern recalls many of the Hopi bracelets I stalk on eBay.
If I recall correctly I got the image from an optical illusions coloring book I had years ago!
Hooray for Thunk! Well, on potential threat of reformulation and your expectation of using it a lot, I would say 100 mLs!
It’s so inexpensive might as well get the 100 ml
Hi everyone. I honestly have no opinion on James Bond. I’ve never seen any of the movies in thier entirety. I took tomorrow off, because my cousin from Massachusetts is in town for the day, and she wants to have lunch with my family and my brother’s family. She is very accomplished and I always feel nervous around her. I also will have to travel out of my comfort zone . Last time I saw her she was wearing Coco Mademoiselle. I’m thinking of course to wear No. 19, but Cristalle and L’eau are also in the running. Any votes? Today, for work I wore Alien eau Sublime.
Being more familiar with No.19 and L’eau, I would say L’eau – softly feminine yet confident and assertive with the No. 5 DNA!
Thanks, I think you are right. I’m not going in for a fight, I just want to smell respectable. Plus it’s very high humidity today, L”eau has that great fresh opening.
Be a bada$$ in no 19
and don’t be nervous….”you do you”….is what I always tell my kids…all different kinds of folks in this world and we can all contribute and make a difference with or without so called “accomplishments”
Thanks CM8, I tell my kids the same thing. It’s always harder to take your own advice.
How did it go, lillyjo?
Thank you for asking. It actually went very well. Her mother and my father were brother and sister. I lost my father 30 years ago this year, and she lost my aunt just last year. We both had a much needed cry, and then a very nice lunch. I guess no matter how different our lives are, we are still just girls missing their parents. I’m so very glad I went. We both smelled fabulous.
So glad to hear that! (Not that you both lost people or cried, but that you are glad you went. And of course, that you both smelled fabulous.)
SotD = Jasmin Angelique
I think I quite like it. I need to wear it again tomorrow because I may have mixed it on my arm with something else, whoopsie.
Best? Sean Connery because I love the look of the older movies, the clothes, cars, hair styles, and interior decor. Also Sean’s accent is charming.
Perfume? l’air du desert marocain
Movie? don’t know don’t care, I’ve watched so few in a single sitting that I can’t remember even one full plot. BUT I adore the songs A View to a Kill and Live and Let Die.
next? um, I’ll pass.
HEY, anybody still reading and want to help me out? This past week I did something SO FAR OUT OF CHARACTER that I was in shock for most of the next two days. It was utterly staggering. But now that the shock is wearing off, I’m very glad I did it. (It was legal and ethical, nobody got hurt, nothing was damaged physically, financially, or otherwise.)
Am I ok? Now I wonder when the happy wears off where I’ll be. Ah well, time will tell, the only constant in the universe is change, end self-therapy. š
When I need my nephew to fix something I messed up, he would say using falsetto “What did you do?”
LOL, thanks, I needed that!
Sometimes it’s good to come out of your comfort zone and do something shocking and out of character…as long as you or anyone else isn’t hurt no harm done, right?
exactly this! thanks, cm8. getting out of my comfort zone is key. š
Oh, you got me wanting all the details of your āout of characterā escapade ????
Ha! It felt like a pretty big deal in my little world, but for many people it would be just a blip. š
No āblipā is little. They all feel insurmountable, and when youāre finally able get past them, itās a big deal. Celebrate accordingly! ????????
š
Once āhappyā wears off, you should return to the initial ābase line,ā and it will be the right time to analyze what should be the right takeaway from this situation: Was it a one-off situation, or should you try learning from that experience and try to act in a similar manner in other situations? Was the outcome worth your two days of shock? Could you have achieved the same (result or satisfaction with the situation) using a more comfortable for you approach, or was that exactly how it needed to happen? Should you have given us more details two days ago so that we could have talked you into being happy with whatever youāve done a day sooner? š
Good questions!????
You’re right, Undina, thank you. My head is clearer today. And those are excellent questions. The one I can answer for myself today is that it was something that happened exactly how it needed to happen. I had to make a split second decision. I chose what was best for me, instead of putting others first as I usually have done. And it turned out fine. š
Amen!!! Sometimes you really DO need to put yourself first (says this former “goody two shoes people pleaser”)
thanks, cm8, that’s perfect. š
I say, it was probably needed to help you break out of that summer funk you were having. Enjoy the happy! ????
thanks, lillyjo! It’s a been a summer-of-funk-turned-happy for sure. š
I too am wondering about details!
I have found that exploring my own ethics and living with intent towards them really makes me feel … good? Happy? Content? Ok with myself?
So much anxiety is caused when I act in a way that conflicts with those ethics. The primary test for me is whether or not it was positive for all involved (not that that should be YOUR test) but I have found that there is a good choice that works for wveryone involved (and often costs me nothing that I am not willing to give up). This is especially true at work where we often act In a way that is legal but not necessarily kindā when there is often a kinder approach. This shift has really helped my overall happiness.
Yes! Feeling OK with myself depends on the positive for all involved idea. And it turned out that way.
Thanks, gvillecreative.
Oh then wonderful!! You got out of your comfort zone, made yourself happy and everyone was well offā there is literally nothing better!!!!
At work, I am frequently faced with what appears to be choices when in fact there is only one way to go which is often not ākindā but has to be to the letter of the policy that applies in the situation.
Sounds like your sense of shock is attributable to something you formerly thought you lacked the courage or ability to do. In that sense, you pushed your own envelope a little. Maybe the boundaries that you felt circumscribing you aren’t really there. That could be a powerful discovery.
Exactly! Beautiful thoughts, SFguy, thank you. It was time for me to push the envelope.
Nicely put! My take is that there is no set character, just a habituated way of being, mostly early survival instincts, role modeling etc. But everything can be subject to change if you want change. I’m happy for you, tiffanie! ????
thanks, Elisa! you’re right, and I do want change. š
This is just a shot in the dark, but did you jump out of a perfectly good airplane? If so, BRAVA!
The part about āwhen the happy wears offā got me wondering…
No airplane, but if it had been a plane, I could say my parachute did deploy perfectly. š
Undina said it well above, there is an eventual return to “baseline” happy, and I hope that’s when things will be clear.
Ahhh, gotcha. ????
Great. Now Live and Let Die….is running through my head on an endless loop. Guess I will have to rewatch that one to get it out of my head. ????
ha! I’ve been playing Live and Let Die on repeat all weekend. š
In the first Bond book, “Casino Royale,” Vesper Lynd wore Vent Vert.
Aha, I think I might have known that at some point and forgot! Either way, glad to know it now.
[Thumbs up]
A cooler overcast day, some rain predicted later. I thunked a sample of AtƩlier des Ors Lune FƩline.
Congrats on THUNK!
THUNK AWAY
Enjoy the day! We could certainly use an overcast, cool day.
Last year at this time, we were watching the rain come down during Harvey.
A favorite! Congrats on the thunk
I’m wearing Safran Troublant, inspired by hajusuuri. This is a fabulous Sunday morning scent. Have a wonderful day, everyone!
Yay! My bottle is down to the last 20% and I have a back-up. I will try to thunk this in the next ummmm 6 months.
LOVE Safran Troublant…so much so I thunked a 15 ml decant last summer! It’s a fabulous ANY DAY scent IMHO
Im also wearing ST this morning. Itās so cozy to wear on the weekend. ????
[busily scribbling down a reminder to try SF in the heat very soon]
Does anyone have 1-3mls of Aedes Iris Nazarena they can sell me to test btw?
And separately. any recs for room freshener at the door to an attic? It smells musty when we open the door in the new house. Iām thinking some slight lemony scent but not sure what the distribution method should be… reeds? One of those circular clay things on a lightbulb? This is our first basement.
Basement or attic? If basement, you may want to have several dehumidifying pellet containers (I think there are scented and unscented ones but I bet the scented ones smell vile so I would avoid those). I would also avoid anything around a light bulb as the heat with other substance may degrade the light bulb even though they are designed for them. So, what to use? I would try those Renuzit thingies where you twist the middle to expose a bit of gel OR the new NEST liquid-less room diffusers. Good luck and please do let us know what you ended up doing.
Oh! Good recs. Thanks! And yes, basement
Dehumidifier, the type you plug in. We have a largish one in our basement, but my mom has one in a closet that is the size of a shoe box. Get rid of the damp and mildew, and your attic/basement will all around feel better.
Thanks for the rec. until you both commented on it I didnāt think of it being a humidity problem. It probably is!
Dehumidifier is exactly what keeps our basement smelling fresh…when the basement smells basement-y, I know the power flickered and it turned itself off. If you’re lucky, you can get it positioned so a hose goes right to a drain and you don’t have to empty it. (We have ours next to the sink by the wash machine for that reason.)
BoE today.
Smellinā mighty fine today!
NICE!
You smell great!
I’m 100% in the Sean Connery camp, specifically the ones made in the 60s. So much so that I had serious opposition to watching non-Connery ones until just a few years ago. My husband convinced me to watch one of the new ones, and I will cast my vote for D Craig as a worthy successor. I’ve also seen some with Pierce Brosnan (who I love, always have, but not as Bond) and at least part of one of the Dalton ones (who I have a hard time taking seriously, perhaps due to his being miscast as Bond too early in his career?) Never seen Roger Moore or George L.
Goldfinger gets my vote as best movie, and best song and title sequence (I also love all of the scenes at the hotel, which are just so very 60s and fun.) I’ll give Adele serious props for Skyfall, which is not only a great movie theme but a great song in its own right.
And thanks, Robin, for the weekend poll š I had all kinds of plans yesterday that I wasn’t able to fulfill as I was not feeling well at all, so spent the evening watching Sean Connery as Bond.
Will douse myself shortly with No 19 Spray Cologne and head to Little Italy to buy All The Delicious Things.
Will also say that if they marry him off in next year’s film, that might be a tidy way to wrap things up. Not sure there needs to be a successor, unless it’s Idris Elba, and then I’ll watch them all.
I first read this as āWhen I marry himā…
So sorry you were not feeling well!
R.I.P. Senator John McCain
SOTD = Diptyque 34 boulevard Saint Germain EDP
This will be launched in September and I got it in the goodie bag that came with the purchase of the EDT version. So far, I am not detecting any difference so I will need to do a side x side.
Nordstrom – I had a very nice mahi-mahi taco; healthy option, right quantity and tasty. That said, they did a very poor job of change management went they switched to paperless Notes. I will be making my opinions known to the Customer Experience Manager.
I already started with hajusuuriās Great Purge of 2018. I will subdivide my 200 item goal as: apparel & accessories (including at least 5 pairs of shoes), health & beauty aids, books & magazines and miscellaneous. 200 was daunting but when I mentally bucketed my goal, I was more prepared to meet and most likely exceed the challenge.
The paperless notes transition hasn’t gone smoothly. Plus, when they had the Anniversary sale, neither of my online orders offered the “make this a triple points day” option. When I contacted them, they agreed & said other customers had noticed the same thing. They claimed they were going to make those purchases 10x points, which is great, but hasn’t been reflected on my statements (will make a call this time instead of emailing).
Or just show up in person. The first day purchase is supposed to be 10x because the website got messed up again. I also had issues with pre-sales as the item number in the catalog was for a different item that pictured / described.
What paperless Notes??! No one told me anything about that…
There you go…they did a very poor job of communicating. When I have time next week I will convert them to a gift card which is easier to handle.
Completely off topic, but who can I go to to voice my complaints in general? I have a long list, so I wonāt post them here, but, really! A LONG list. You seem to have excellent connections. Maybe for a small fee, you could be my proxy āVoiceā to get my opinions to those who are prepared to address them. You could pick this up as a side job… I could pay you in perfume or T-Rex hugs…????????
Ha! Not so off topic because we do learn from each other. Except where my life can be made miserable for making a scene (like an airport, plane and the like), I tend to ask to speak to a manager if there’s a lights on nobody’s home situation. At Nordstrom, the Customer Experience manager knows me due to my spending habits so if something is not quite right, I always ask to speak to her…or email her; I also compliment the store / SA when warranted just to be balanced. Now, if ANYONE (SA or other customers) disses my mom when we’re out and about, woe is the person because I will make a scene (I have a very loud voice) for picking on my defenseless mom — I’ve had to do this at Target, Trader Joe’s and 99 Ranch.
I’ll take perfume and T-Rex hugs anytime ????
PSA:
lillyjo was asking about the Sephora sale the other day – why yes they are having a 20% off everything until September 3rd. Rouge started in 8/24 or 25 (not sure) and then all others 6 days later so I would say by no later than 8/30.
Oh thanks! They have a perfume sampler that includes Tom Ford Solei Blanc edt, for 65 dollars. With the 20 percent off, it would be like 53. Then you can redeem the coupon for a 1.7 oz. Bottle. Look at me doing perfume math!
This is a good bargain!
Eek, see LizzieB’s note below that it is 15% off for regular VIB.
Iām regular VIB. It goes from Aug 30 to Sept 3 and is 15% off.
15% is better than nothing though. I actually don’t recall them doing this discount around now but I’m not complaining.
āInsiderā is 10% off. Donāt know when that starts… my guess is same as VIB.
Lying in bed reading NST in a spritz of Womanity, just cuz.
Okay, hereās my listāIdris Elba would be terrific, but says heās not doing Bond… so who else?
In order of my preference (I love this game #1 fantasy jobā casting director!)
5. Tom Hardy
4. Benedict Cumberbatch
3. Orlando Bloom (But where is he now?)
2. Luke Evans
1. Michael Fassbender
I’d totally forgotten about Benedict Cumberbatch!
And yes, Luke Evans is stunning! *fans self*
I am reeking because I tested five Atelier Bloem early this morning before I send them off to a good friend and made numerous 1ml samples for my mom who uses about 5 each time she goes to Latin dancing or zumba class on a daily basis…I filled up a Maxwell House coffee can of said samples. I smell fantastic-LOL!
Question- does anyone remember Jovan’s Touche (circa 1979)? It came to mind because the drydown of Montale’s Ginger Musk reminds me of it. I want to wear this and a Villa of the Mysteries scent this week but will have to figure out how to tie them both into the community project????
Omg, you are so on top of it! I donāt even know what this weeks CP IS…????????āāļø My shame is a heavy burden!
Ha! I really should not be thinking about perfume or the CP but it’s serving as a good distraction.????
Wearing Bel Respiro EDP today- nice, fluffy and VERY quiet, I liked edt better though. I also found 3 Exclusiff edp samples that I haven’t tried- will remedy it this week.
I don’t care much for the Bond movies, but in my late teen years I enjoyed reading Bond books by Ian Fleming.
And I have never read any of them but the first! I should get a few from the library.
Double commenting this AM because I forgot to mention my trip to Nordstrom yesterday. I havenāt shopped for clothes in ages because I am just so huge these days nothing looks good on me, and I work from home… but I have a week long trip to DC end of Oct for work… anyway, I was at our middling Nordstrom, in the perfume section of course, sniffing the Le Labos. Turns out that our Walnut Creek Nordstrom is now carrying all the city exclusives… which completely makes sense from a profit stand point… why make a perfume exclusive to one city, at least why do that indefinitely?
I was already partial to Limette (SF), the price is stupid for what is basically a cologne. Cuir (Dubai) is intense, intense leather, very butch…. I would like it on anyone. Benjoin (Moscow) also stood out. But my favorite was Mousse de Chene (Amsterdam) which is mossy, with spices. The price takes all the fun out of it though. Such is my relationship with Le Labo!
Yeah, I never got the point of keeping those exclusive and put of reach except for 1 month out of the year, and only in the boutiques. Though the hype and buildup probably creates a burst of a buying frenzy for that month.
I like MdC and bought the stupid expensive sample. It’s so potent that it will last me many years.
But I think they may have only had them because September is the “free for all” month and they had them out a bit early. According to Le Labo, they’re all still exclusive.
Iām way behind the power curve this weekend. SOTD yesterday was Heeley Note de Yuzu, and today Iām in Acqua di Parma Colonia Pura.
I hope everyone is having a good Sunday afternoon. ????
1.) First Bond film I ever watched was Goldfinger. Favourite Bond? Roger Moore of course, I never really cared for Sean Connery (sorry to all of his fans!) or any of the other Bonds for that matter. However I do think Craig is a great actor, I just prefer the less serious Bond that Moore created.
2) I think probably Pour un Homme de Caron.
3) Hard, haven’t even seen half of them. I’ll skip this one.
4) I don’t really mind either way. Elba is probably a good actor, not one of my favourites either!
RIP John McCain. Watching his concession speech to Obama made my heart heavy (but in a good way).
I’m wearing BF Monserrat for a sunny, warm day here today which involves a lot of hanging out, doing not much of anything, with different folks, in different locations. That’s about all I’m motivated to do today.
Although itās hard to choose, I love Sean Connery. Eau Sauvage, would be my pick, and definitely Idris Elba to take Bond into the future.
You know, itās too bad Alan Rickman never played Bond around his Hans Gruber days. Could have been fun.
Iām in Aloha TiarĆ© today. Didnāt last long enough. Funny how weather goes from incredibly pleasant last night to so heavy and humid today. Not hot, just really heavy. Smelling nicely tropical helps…
My husband and I took advantage of the nice afternoon/evening last night to head up to sit on benches along the East River. He was watching horse racing on his phone while I was knitting. Lots of dog/people watching. I laughed when a couple of older men walked by…one of them was looking at us. As I looked back, he said,āYou two look like youāre on a second honeymoon.ā I laughed and said āEvery day…ā. I guess weāve become one of those cute older couples…. then we had a nice walk along incredibly quiet streets (NYC in August).
Loved Rickman from the first moment I saw him way back when. What a fabulous actor. And his voice just did something to me…????
Oooh. You brought to mind a good memory for me.
When my husband was just my boyfriend and we lived together in a fifth floor walk up on 89th near West End, we had our favorite bench that we’d sit on in Riverside Park, to watch the ships go up and down the Hudson. We’d have G & Ts in coffee tumblers and watch the sun go down while guessing what the freighters were carrying and where they were from.
Here’s to all the honeymoons we can manage!
Pierce Brosnan was Bond when I was growing up (GoldenEye came out when I was 10), so he’ll always be Bond to me. That said, I spent a good chunk of my youth watching the older Bonds, including most of the Roger Moore films, and sometimes I think I preferred him. Never cared all that much for Connery (*gasp!*). He seemed too smug. Daniel Craig is fine – not the best, not the worst. Timothy Dalton leaves me cold. The next casting choice should be very, very interesting. My personal pick at this point would be Tom Hiddleston (Loki in the Marvel movies). British, suave, yet slightly more genteel than Craig. I feel, for various reasons, that perhaps a slightly more sensitive Bond is in order for the next round. Hiddleston seems like he’d bring that kind of vibe, without being a full-on wet blanket.
As for scenting the Bonds…I dunno. To me they all look like they’d smell of some variation on a barbershoppy fougĆ©re. Classic and smooth, nothing adventurous. Perhaps Craig might wear one of the modern Guerlains or Diors, but certainly nothing sweet or floral.
My own SotD is Mugler Alien, one discreet spritz under my clothes. Anything more might constitute chemical warfare in this climate.
Funny you should suggest Tom Hiddleston–I was thinking of Adam Driver for similar reasons, but dismissed Driver for being too American. I see where you are going with Hiddleston!
Hi all,
Just peeking in, I’ve just been discharged from UCSF. Today’s SOTD is Mure et Musc Extreme. This works well when I’m not feeling my best.
1. My favorite Bond? Daniel Craig, without a doubt.
2. I think Bond would wear either Melograno by Santa Maria Novella or Life Essence by Fendi.
3. My favorite Bond movie is Skyfall (Casino Royale is a very close runner up).
4. I think Idris Elba would be great, runners up to play James Bond are Aidan Turner or Tom Hardy. Nope, Bond should stay in active service, no retirement for him!
Yikes! I hope you are okay. Yay for going home and yay for M et M ex!
I’m ok, I’m in every 10 weeks for treatment, I have a few nurses I bring perfume samples to and we have fun giggling and talking about fun things like books and perfumes. It makes the time go by faster. š
And I also wish there could be a female bond series, my pick would be Charlize Theron, she was wonderful in Atomic Blonde!
Glad you are back home. Rest up. And yes to Melograno!!!!
James Bond, alonside Indiana Jones, are my favourite fictional characters.
So:
1. Definetely Sean Connery, with Pierce Brosnan an excellent second
2. Goldfinger
3. I would like him to wear Chanel Antaeus
4. Unlikely some previous comment I am intrigued by a female character with the same traits of James Bond. I agree Gillian Anderson would be perfect https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/may/24/jane-bond-gillian-anderson-next-007-twitter
Reading the posts before, Henry Cavill would be a perfect 007, imho
Agreed, and he is sooooo easy on the eyes!
Ohhh, I like the Chanel Antaeus idea! And yes, Gillian Anderson would be fantastic! š
