London-based niche line Gallivant has launched Tokyo, a new addition to their series of "urban exploration" fragrances.
Gallivant’s Tokyo captures the moment when Old Tokyo meets New, the sweet smokiness of Japanese incense of Kodo ceremonies spilling out of small wooden temples to meet the sweet-and-sour pungency of izakaya street food.
There’s a lot going on in Tokyo, the city, and so there’s a lot going on in Tokyo, the scent. But despite the cacophony of notes, it all meshes into a singular statement on modern Japanese urban culture.
Notes for the spicy woody fragrance include yuzu, bergamot, black pepper, cardamom, wasabi, hinoki, cedar, nutmeg, iris, rose, incense, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, musk and amber.
Gallivant Tokyo is available at Luckyscent, $95 for 30 ml Eau de Parfum.

Sounds quite intriguing. If I don’t smell it earlier, I surely will in a couple of weeks in Florence.
It really sounds interesting. Please, report back when you try it.
Have fun in Florence!
I always wonder about these heavily concept-driven companies. It seems like you’d reach a point where you’d have to force-fit ideas, and would just generally be limiting.
I agree.
I’ve thought that before, too, but I think with location/exploration you’d be pretty safe. Sooooo many possibilities. You could probably make whatever fragrance you want and find somewhere that works.
Good point.
Easier maybe when you’re working with different perfumers? You put out a brief about Tokyo and see what you get back, and then you can pick and choose, and hone the idea? (I don’t know if that’s how they’re working, it’s just an assumption)
The notes list sounds interesting. The omnipresence of incense is spot-on, at least. I wonder if the gourmandishness will work. From what I’ve read, the fragrance sounds deeper than Tokyoites themselves would prefer. When I visited, I wore Lys Mediterranee.
