Today, our seventh annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). As we did last year, we're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.
If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it. Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

-Yves Rocher Tendre Jasmine
Glad to see Yves Rocher getting some love — if that is love? Don’t remember gasoline in that one!
I often get gasoline from jasmine. Weird. YR does some great fragrances IMO.
Interesting! And I agree.
Mohur – rich roses
Almond milk and saffron sweet –
Ouch! Though – the price tag.

Ha! ????????????????????????
I’m having emoticon envy.
Me too! How does one insert all these cool icons in a comment box?
I’m cheating with an iPhone but you can also find a link to an emoticon chart just above the first comment on every post! (Thanks Robin!)

A truth in haiku–very nice
Haaaa!
Sad but true.
So true!
I bow to your pithiness.
Fantabulous. And seriously, milk, bread and paper towels are so overrated.

Enjoy!
Or, in this case hyacinth perfume? :> )
Today’s scent: Chanel 5
No other perfume news, but
Must share! Now size 6!
Thursday, a little
Happy dance in Macy’s dress,
Down from a 20.
(Only took 5 years!)
Wow! What a great feeling.
Cheers!!
I am so happy for you! What an achievement.
Congrats!
Congratulations!
Slow and steady wins the race
Fast weight loss won’t work
Congrats!
MR, that’s amazing! Congratulations!
A salute to your
Tenacity! I’ll do a
Happy-dance with you!
I really could’a used some company in that dressing room. (Where’s an overly-complimentary sales person when you need one?!) 😀
Huge accomplishment, congrats!
Wow, that’s awesome! You should post the pictures, as an encouragement to others trying to loose weight (kh-kh…that would be me). Size 6, that is seriously TINY.
I think we all have plenty of reasons (ie. pressures, judgements, self-recriminations, societal stereotypes, and over-blown expectations) to lose. Not sure another before and after adds much to the mix! Best advice I can give is be kind to yourself. Be forgiving. Don’t expect perfection, just improvement. Do the easy stuff first and celebrate when you do it consistently! All or nothing leads to a whole ‘lot of nothing.
Excellent advice. And big congratulations to you, especially for choosing a slow and steady loss, and if I recall correctly, increasing amounts of exercise.
I will use you s a role model.
Exercise and I are on good terms these days, but it’s been a slow warming period! I started with walking after work to relax. Weightlifting was added a few years ago, and last year, I started a (very limited) running program. It sounds like a lot more than it is, listed out like that, though! Consistency has been my friend far more than frequency. I do something active 3-4 days a week. I’d like to do more, but life gets in the way, it seems. There’s always more growth to be had, I guess!
Congrats! So awesome.
Wow! Congrats!
To put it in the vernacular: Woot!
Thank you, all! Still having a hard time believing it. (Maybe it’s just a really flattering dress?)
Maybe it’s a change in your perception (and a really flattering dress!)
Congratulations!
Perception is a very odd thing, isn’t it?! Honestly, when I look in the mirror, I can’t see the difference between me now and me a few years ago. I keep waiting to really *feel* different. I’m more energetic, stronger, but my thighs are still my thighs. Not complaining, mind you, just surprised!
Maybe you need a new perfume to go with the dress..?
Haha! I am *trying* to avoid perfume purchases this year. I have this big party to plan (aka wedding), and I’m not sure what it’s gonna cost me. But definitely, SOME sort of celebration is in order! (The pretty dress was a good start.)
Wow, so great! Good health, strength, and wellbeing to you!
Congratulations! That’s amazing… and boy, does that take some determination. Yay!
Ostara, love you!
I tend to overspray it
Perfect daffodil
I love Ostara, too, and find it very easy to overspray.
It’s the scent of spring but so tenacious.

In other news… I picked up a bottle of Agent Provocateur and Signorina Eleganza at Marshalls yesterday and am debating if I should keep them. Any thoughts on either? I’m pretty likely to keep the Signorina, if only because I like the cute bottle which matches the Signorina EDT that I blind bought (also at Marshalls). I rather like the EDT, it’s super girly and easy to wear and has a nice creamy milky dry down. And actually, speaking of which, has anyone tried the newest Signorina, Mysteriosa? I shamelessly admit I’m interested – not only because of the cool matching black bottle – but because it shares the milk mousse base of the EDT and adds blackberry… I think it’s a pretty generic fruitchouli based on what I’ve read, but whatever. 🙂
keep them
I like a Agent Provocateur on other people, but don’t wear it myself. My Mom wore it yesterday and I kept finding reasons to pass near her so I could smell her. Luckily, she didn’t find it creepy 🙂 I say, open it carefully and give it a test. I think it would make a lovely air-freshener if nothing else and Marshall’s is good about returns.
Ooh, I kinda wish I had a bottle of the AP! I say keep it.
I think you should keep them both. The Eleganza smells a little generic at first but it dries down beautifully. I bought the Agent Provocateur, but returned it because it is similar to JHaG Mad Madame, which I already have and love. The Misteriosa is a dark fruitchouli, but smells more grown up than most. Still, probably better to wait for it to drop in price. Macys has it if you want to test it. Sorry, I am not real great at describing scents.
Thanks for the insight!
New Cuir de Lancôme
How do I know it’s not fake?
The cap is wonky
All the caps are wonky but can be fixed by pulling down the metal band from inside the cap. I fixed mine that way.
Yup. Never had a good cap on CdL.
The wonky cap is enough for me to tell you it’s not fake! All three of my bottles had wacked-out caps (with metal band stuck inside).
I had read the caps were bad… It fell off immediately, and I had to play with it. I did laugh….
Lol!
O yes, mine is too…glad to hear it’s normal!
The cap on mine is wonky too. I tried the thing with the metal band that farouche mentioned but it wouldn’t stay in place. Oh well.
Where did you get Cuir? I live in Barcelona and chasing a bottle!

Box of Eels? Thank goodness, it
Doesn’t smell like that
🙂
The mere fact that everyone calls it “Box of Eels” makes me feel as if I have to try it (can’t believe I never have) — as if you’re all such good friends with it that you have a jokey nickname, and maybe it has one for you….
If you haven’t tried it, you must! The parfum if you can find it. The edt is nice but the parfum is swoon-worthy.
Wore BdI edt yesterday. Love it in warm weather!
Where have all the thrills gone?

NST and Toast
Unrelated: I’m testing Jasmin Sarai’s How you Love. To me it is a honey scent tempered with flowers although honey isn’t listed in the notes (beeswax is).
I love NST with toast. And marmalade.
I hope How You Love is nice. Honey and flowers is a great combination.
It kind of smells like Pine Bros. Natural Honey throat drops–the chewy kind. Not in a bad way. Just does.
Monsieur Li.
Gosh I wish I’d had this perfume the last time I did a long haul flight from NZ to Europe. You know that feeling of arriving mid way, in Singapore, after 12 hours on a plane and you have 5 hours in transit and then another 12 hours on a plane before being dumped at 7am in another country with no chance of check in or a shower until 2pm…and you feel groggy and grimy and the airport lights scorch your eyeballs…Monsieur Li is the perfume for that moment
Love that Hermes. It’s the only one that worked well on my skin so far…
We do the slog from SF to Singapore with a stop in Taiwan or Korea or Hong Kong… and it is a very long haul. Especially when the stopovers are 4 to 6 hours. I notice lots of ladies surreptitiously spraying flower water on their arms and faces throughout the flights. Their bottles must be very small to get past security as carry-on!
You can have up to 100 mL in a single bottle: I’d think that would be enough to get you through a flight to almost anywhere.
I have been making friends with Monsieur Li and agree with you completely. There is a citrus-floral hum that is invigorating without being simple or obvious or harshly clean-smelling.
I smiled when a friend’s daughter (6 years old) was asked if her coast-to-coast flight across North America was difficult. She said no then commented that her family’s flight from Paris to New York via Iceland was “a little bit long.”
I treated myself to a bottle for Mother’s Day. It’s such an elegant “still waters run deep” scent. I had to have it.
High praise indeed!
A sonnet for my favorite genre:
A taste for pretty flowers have I none;
Even a gardenful would leave me cold.
Hesperides and herbs for some are gold,
But I confess in “fresh” I find no fun.
In this, a world where one’s dessert is worn
Upon one’s wrists, and commerce fills the nose
With stink of pepper pink (call it “baie rose”
If spice with nicer names you would adorn)
Give me civet, musk, and richest indole,
Ambergris and honey, hyraceum,
Labdanum and costus, castoreum,
An animalic balm to soothe my soul–
And thus anointed, let me kneel and thank
The gods and goddesses who gave us skank.
Bravo!
Thank you! 🙂
The final line made me giggle.
You’re a tallented sonnetist.
Thanks! I really love sonnets, reading and writing them.
Yeah, gotta love that ending. Thanks for the laugh, Olenska.
Glad it got you laughing!
Three cheers for that!!
Grazie!
That’s brilliant!
Aw, shucks!… 🙂
Love it!
Glad you did!
Shakespeare who? Yours is the greatest sonnet ever!
And totally agree about skank.
Shakespeare and Edna St. Vincent Millay are my heroes. And skank is my inspiration!
Fantastic!
Many thanks!
Yes!!!
Heeheehee!
Excellent! Do you write/publish poetry elsewhere?
Thank you. No publishing, but yes to writing. Sonnets are my favorite form!
That’s awesome. I can manage a haiku but I think that might be the extent of my poetic abilities.
If you can write haiku, pat yourself on the back– a complete thought in 17 syllables– whoosh!
I meant to say ONLY 17 syllables, a true challenge to a wordy birdie like me.
Nicely written!
Why, thank you 🙂 I chewed my pen to pieces, though!
So great!
Muchas gracias!
Impressive and hilarious 🙂 Thanks for that!
Thank YOU. It was hard but fun to do.
I’m sure it was hard, but you make it sound as if it just rolled off your tongue.
I agree with everyone that the last couplet is *it*.
That is actually where I began. ;). All roads start in AND lead to skank.
This reminds me how much I loved sonnets when I was introduced to them in high school. Lovely!
Sonnets really are amazing– so strict and yet so strangely freeing. When you finish you really feel like you’ve fought a duel and won.
Wonderful!
Many many thanks!
Not participating in the haiku today. Since my brain is mush right now. But I wore vintage Miss Dior and since it has faded, no 19 is my choice.
Even when my brain is at full speed, I can’t do any sort of poetry.
Here is my attempt at a sonnet, with apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning:
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways
I love thee for thy transcendental powers
Thy citrus, incense, woods, spices and flowers
That give beauty and joy to all my days
And comfort to my nights, lulling to sleep
My unquiet mind that runs too fast;
Thy evocation of places and times past,
Stirring memories and reaching deep
Into my soul; Thy names with mystery imbued,
The shapes of thy bottles, the varied hues
Of juice and glass—an array from which to choose
The perfect scent to accompany each mood.
I love thee with all my heart and so I say
I shall persist to love thee all my days.
Fantastico!
Yay!
wow…just wow
A scented love letter to EBB~!
Beautiful!
Nicely done!
Fantastic! A joy to read.
So evocative.
As you and Olenska have shown, the sonnet form can be used to express such a range of ideas and emotions
Poetry is not one of my talents, sorry NSTers. (Now if you need a wrong exposed, I’m your girl.)
Wore Fou d’Absinthe this morning, but entertaining Santal Blush after reading sandalwood references above.
Thanks to the poets of the group!
Ooh wait this is a good offer! Do you specialize in a particular kind of wrong or really anything??
I know, now I’m feeling a need to list some wrongs I’ve witnessed. . .
Ha ha, just general defending the underdog stuff. Maybe I need therapy to quit. 🙂

For watching Eurovision
Rather too tasteful
I drew Bulgaria in the office sweepstake so here’s hoping they come first, second, third or last. Not too likely though.
I’m a new Eurovision viewer in the US. It’s enthralling. How could I have missed this for so many years!?
It hasn’t been on in the US until this year. And now we’re all really deprived, since Terry Wogan is gone!
This cracked me up. Go Bulgaria!
Excellent!
I’ve never had a chance to root for Bulgaria!
Woo hoo, go, Bulgaria!
Umm, out of the loop completely…what are we rooting for, again?
Can I come work at your office? We never do anything even half so fun. Enjoy!

SOTD is Jicky, which I’m test driving for the first time. Intriguing.
Oh blimey! It just started raining. I’m off to catch some creosote and petrichor!
Don’t forget the ozone and geosmin!
It ended up being a brief sprinkle, and there wasn’t really any lightning, so not much ozone. But it did still smell good!
Jicky! One of my all-time faves. Hope you like it!
To be honest I only dabbed a bit, so I’m going to have to apply more to really judge how it works on me. But I definitely liked what I smelled so far!
On that gray day

This is Little Tree!
(Name changed to protect the innocent. The actual scent sells for €106.)
And here’s where one can look for future fragrance trends and inspiration:
https://www.littletrees.com/
Hee-hee, couldn’t resist, sorry not sorry. 😉
A serious (and likely deserved) smack down there. Sometimes it seems the higher the price the more they can get away with.
I know, right? I was so surprised that the scent (on paper) kept wafting pine-scented air freshener back at me all day yesterday. To be fair, I want to try it on skin someday soon.
I left out the name of the fragrance in case someone loves it. A few months ago someone mentioned a scent I adore has a celery note they dislike. What? I had never noticed it. So I spritzed and all I could smell was celery leaf. It took a week for me to get over it, but eventually the love came back.
???? Oh dear me, I laughed. I’m trying to guess what frag this is….
Just bought two bottles
Alaia and Narciso
Blind buys are the best
Ditto that! Blind buys rock!
A friend of mine gifted me with Alaia recently. I was surprised by how much I like it. Enjoy your new bottles!

This one is next on my purchase list after burning through a decant. Wasn’t sure about it at first, but it grew on me.
I only have a decant too. I really like it, almost love it. I wanted to see if I go through my decant this summer and see if I miss it before persuing it further. If so, I’ll be asking your advice about where to find the smaller sprayer. (I forgot what you called it- Tout something?). ????
Wow, you’re up early. Aren’t you on the west coast?
Beauteous!
Cool windy day, perfect for a bit of AG Musc Nomade.
Smelling very good!
No haiku from me, but love reading all yours. Lots of En Passant yesterday and today trying to get the most out of lilac season.
I’m really warming to En Passant. It’s a little “watery” for me most of the time, but on a sunny, spring day, it’s pretty great!
Back from vacation.
Slammed at work! Sigh. Hawaii
seems so long ago…
The problem with short vacations is that everything that came up while you were away is waiting for you when you get back. Long vacations are much better, your co-workers have to find solutions on their own 🙂
In other news, it’s officially spring: I was awakened this morning by acorn woodpeckers drumming on the house. Their equivalent of “Hey Babyyyyy”
Hey, who wouldn’t be impressed by a fella who can knock his head into wood without being concussed?! 😉
Patchouli 24 (my sotd for Sunday)
Campfire smoke lion
Quickly turns cuddling kitten
You are not so tough
Great haikus guys, and I am blown away by the sonnets. :^)
My own weekend was not so great; Friday night flight back from Paris was delayed, then I spent all yesterday either getting sick or preparing to get sick or sleeping off getting sick (TMI I know, sorry) from some mystery stomach bug. Today I am washed out and lethargic, but needed to get myself to the airport anyway to fly back to CDG.
Today’s SOTD was “L’Homme Sage” from Divine, and next time I’ll spray some more and see if it lasts longer. (I remember people commenting that all-natural perfumes don’t last so well). I didn’t bother re-applying as I thought I’d spray something at the airport, but in the event I am not really in the mood.
I was interested to see BHX is carrying the Chanel Exlusifs, so I sniffed a few that have been mentioned here that I didn’t know. 31 Rue Cambon seemed to be from the same family as No. 19 to me; Sycomore was lovely and the one I would consider for myself, and I liked Coromandel but wasn’t sure at first sniff that I would like it on me. Another day when I am less tired I’ll grab a spray and see.
Trying out AirBnB for the first time ever; I have an apartment in the 16th arrondissement for a fortnight and will see how that goes compared to a hotel. When I took a short term let in London I really appreciated having more space to myself, being able to cook healthy meals etc.
I have also packed 5 2ml samples for my understated week :^)
Sounds awful. I hope you feel better.
It was not an ideal way to spend a Saturday and I am much better now, thanks! :^)
Oh, I hope you feel good soon and can enjoy your visit! I’ve had only good experiences with Air BnB so far. Hope your room is exactly what you want!
Thanks! On first impressions it’s fine, functional rather than luxurious or charming, but handy for the office. :^)
My brother and sister-in-law used AirBnB for a month in Rome 2 years ago. In fact, it was cheaper to have it for a full month rather than 1 week on, one week off, then two weeks on. They left their apartment empty during the week that they went to Florence and Venice.
I hope you feel better, road warrior!
Feeling much better thanks! I’ll look for the full month of June next. The European Championship (soccer) is in France this year so prices are going through the roof. :^)
Glad you’re feeling better and I hope you find time for all the great galleries and museums in the 16th.
And since so many of us here also like tea:

Love this!
One haiku deserves a limerick…
There once was a young girl from Spain,
Who sprayed her perfumes again and again
When asked which was best
She replied with much zest
Andy Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Morocain.
Ouch, sorry Andy, but it is my favourite of all my 100+ bottles 🙂
????????????
Perfect!
Bravo to all who wrote haikus, sonnets, limericks, poems! None for me though because lazy.
Yesterday, I met up with jepster at Menlo Park Mall and had a lovely lunch at the Nordstrom Cafe. We then did one round of both levels. I went home with two bottles: Azuree (+ EL GWP and a Macys beauty purchase tote bag) free because it was covered fully by a gift card and Angel Muse 30 mL (+ Angel GWP and lots of manufacturers samples) also free because it was partially covered by the remaining gift card value and I shelled out < $50 :-). It should be noted that jepster did not discourage me from buying so when it's time to confess to Donatella, these get an asterisk to go into jepster' ledger. Oh wait, never mind, they were free so I actually don't have to count them.
I wore a respectable amount of Angel Muse. At church, it got walloped by another person's perfume (I couldn't tell what it was) when she removed her jacket to drape it over her shoulders. Right after she did that, she decided to move further up and wafted a trail of perfume as she walked up.
Now to decide on which perfume(s) to wear for next week's project!
Hi hajusuuri! You made me swoon with nostalgia as I fondly remembered wandering the Menlo Park mall years ago (not thaaaat long ago really). Did you shop there before it was closed and renovated in about 1991? The transformation was astonishing.
Your EL and Angel perfumath is on point. Looking forward to your picks for next week’s understatement theme. All I can come up with at the moment is En Passant, but perhaps the name is making the association for me more than the scent.
Before and after :-)…it was only one story way back when. Alexander’s and Bamberger’s were the anchor stores and there was no parking deck!
Fun swap yesterday with Boston NSTers Surbhi, Matylda, and Shira!
VIntage perfume nips
Miniature time capsules
Of fragrances past
As I have mentioned here before, I have been buying a considerable quantity of perfume nips from ebay. I have been enjoying the opportunity to wear some long-discontinued perfumes in what is likely the closest possible approximation of their original state (at least, without making the journey to the Osmotheque).
From the point of view, no doubt, of my non-perfumista acquaintances. That is–if I were to ever tell them just how much perfume I have:
There’s a crazy woman from Texas
Whose spending habits perplex us.
She buys perfumes galore
Bottles by the score
But never a Mercedes or Lexus!
Ha! Love this.
That does capture the view of others.
