Ephemera by Unsound is a new fragrance project from Unsound Productions (of the Unsound Festival) and perfumer Geza Schoen. They debut with three limited edition fragrances: Noise, Drone and Bass.
Ephemera presents olfactory compositions based on musical resonances and reverberations....In the first phase of the project, three musicians – Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, and Steve Goodman (aka Kode9) – created raw sonic material which Schoen then reinterpreted to create three different scents: Noise, Drone and Bass. These scents and sounds are now used in an installation environment, and also encapsulated as unique perfumes.
Noise ~ "Synthe screeches of jitterbugging metal and heat imbue the atmosphere with a kind of psychic tremor. Hyper-connected, daring and tight, Noise is a wild ride through life at fast-forward. Utterly invigorating, it raises our eye level; leap up! Geza Schoen created the scent representing Noise inspired by way of Ben Frost’s deepest recesses of olfactory memories: catholic church holidays, Australian bushfire, moisture, and insect drones, among other stimuli. Those ideas Schoen connected with aldehydes, ozone, black pepper, saffron, and labdanum, to name a few."
Drone ~ "Screaming green coming through as echoes, bygone flashes of the future through veils of smoke and streaks of light. Multilayered, anachronistic living at it's most vibrant. Embrace every possible movement and Drone on. Tim Hecker's notion of Drone does not have any direct personal narrative, drawing instead on his imagining of “a speculative day-glow incense from rituals where long-form sound induces levitation.” For Geza Schoen, that translates into aldehydes and air notes, developing to fir and juniper, with a base of patchouli, ambergris, and vetiver."
Bass ~ "Deep beats that summon the buried (not the dead), Bass reaches in and, like a magnet, pulls at all untethered corners until your loose, flowing, released. Wear it and bear down on all that's meant to surface. Basically, Bass let's it out! For Steve Goodman (aka Kode9), the idea of Bass connects with childhood memories triggered by the sound and the accompanying scent he remembers of a broken, burning vacuum cleaner. Geza Schoen translated this to a scent which opens with woodsmoke and rum notes, developing into leather, mastic, and tea notes, and finishing with castoreum and moss, among other scents."
Ephemera by Unsound Noise, Drone and Bass can be found now at Twisted Lily, in a coffret of 15 ml Eau de Parfum bottles (shown above, $128) or in separate 30 ml bottles ($115 each).
They’re great, high-quality scents! I love Drone! They come with a link where you can download the music which served as an inspiration for each of the scents.
Good to know, thanks!
I’m all about the bass.
Sorry. I couldn’t resist saying that.
I had to google, so you’ve furthered my education.
Just don’t drop the bass.
Is this real? Sounds like a hybrid between April’s fool and prix de l’eau faux.
Noice sounds nice! I wonder if Mr. Schoen has have emotied a vew vats of Iso E Super in these blends? As long as it doesn’t bring to mind Japanase Noice music with it’s chaotic, disharmonized layers of abstract white and brown noise. Hardly easy listening.
