West Village niche perfume boutique Aedes de Venustas will launch their second fragrance, Iris Nazarena, in June:
Mysterious, mystical, sensuous… With its iris and incense accord, the new Eau de Parfum by AEDES DE VENUSTAS matches the world’s most precious aromatic material with the most ancient. Taking perfumery into the future by bringing it back to its roots: this is iris, reborn. [...]
The rare Iris Bismarckiana is also known as Iris Nazarena because it grows mainly in the mountains east of Nazareth. The uncanny beauty of the blossom, with its brown or purple spots and delicate, bluish-purple veins, seduced Karl Bradl as soon as he discovered it on a postcard. It became the muse of what would be the second offering of AEDES DE VENUSTAS’s signature brand. [...]
The perfumer Ralf Schwieger, who had long wanted to offer a contemporary interpretation of iris, was a perfect fit for the project. With Iris Nazarena, he explains he had to confront two major challenges. First, “I had to find a point of difference with Chanel N°19,” the benchmark of iris-based scents and an unsurpassed template since its launch in 1971. Then, “to incorporate transparency” into the somber iris and incense accord that would express the mystical beauty of the Iris Nazarena. [...]
The suede-soft petals of the mystical muse are sketched in a subtle sfumato of brown, purple and white, brushed with powdery iridescence. The limpid ambrette, with its pear, rose and musk facets, sheds the tender light of dawn on the top notes. Rose adds a touch of floral sensuality, while the aromatic, resinous juniper berry introduces the incense theme. The cool, vivid green of star anise conjures the stylized stems and leaves of the flower. Patchouli and vetiver allude to its roots, driven into dark earth and rock. The sacred smoke rising from the altars weaves its mineral, leather-scented tendrils throughout the development with incense, clove and oud…
The notes feature iris, ambrette, juniper berry, star anise, leather, oud, clove, rose de mai, incense, woods, musk and vétiver.
Aedes de Venustas Iris Nazarena will be available in 100 ml Eau de Parfum, $245.

This sounds wonderful. And I love the bottle, that gunsmoke gray is evocative and elegant!
Ditto to all of that 🙂
Didn’t they also, at one point, have a chypre created for them by Molinard?
Yes…and the L’Artisan scent too — this is the second under their brand name.
I WANT IT! But a sample first please! 😉
Of course!
These notes sound lovely, And that fabulous bottle…I smell trouble. For me.

Clearly the same bottle as the last one, but with grey rather than reddish glass.
One of those rare fancy bottles which looks better in real life.
Yes bottle is lovely and notes sound great, want to try it!
It sounds like a cousin of Mythique. Mythique is so vegetal it reminds me of something you’d use to season roast turkey – if this gets avoids the odd food connotation I get from Mythique (and I may be alone in getting), well I would like to try it.
Trouble with a capital T. It means I must make a stop there in 2 weeks’ time when I have to be in the city on a rare Saturday.
Iris doesn’t tend to agree with me, but this is a must try, especially given the perfumer!
Great concept! Personally I’d be ok with a complete iris fad revival, but this one sounds really special.
..signing up for the iris fad revival!
lol!
I wonder: Do you pull the “coin” to the side to spray?
No, it just has to be lifted up, like a cap.
