The odour version of “white”
Meet Laurax, a not-very-bold, not-that-exciting new fragrance. According to a panel of sniffers, it’s neither appealing nor revolting. It’s “intermediately pleasant”. People almost trip over themselves to describe it in non-descript terms—“fragrant”, “chemical” and “perfumery”.
Laurax isn’t going to set the perfume world ablaze in the near future, but its scientific implications are fascinating. This bizarre scent is actually a set of completely different fragrances that all smell roughly the same. It’s the odour version of “white”.

Anat Fritz Tzora ~ new fragrance

Perfume: Giving Thanks
It’s so easy to complain about perfume these days. Beautiful materials are banned or restricted; the market pumps out hundreds of cheaply made, mediocre fragrances yearly; many of our favorite old perfumes have been reformulated beyond recognition; perfume advertising is often laughably banal; and more.
But we’re still here, loving perfume. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’d like to list some of the reasons I’m grateful for fragrance:
First and most important, exploring scent is profoundly rewarding. Before I fell headlong into perfume, I loved the smell of coffee, old leather purses, and lilac bouquets, for example, but I had little appreciation — or awareness, even — of balance and structure in fragrance. I couldn’t luxuriate in how a scent transitions as it ages on skin. I didn’t see how a hint of ugliness throws a perfume’s beauty into relief. Now I know that appreciating perfume has less to do with having a keen sense of smell and being able to pick out individual notes than it does with understanding a perfume’s whole tableau.
Now for something less grand but still gratitude-worthy: travel sizes, sample sets, rollerballs and 30 ml bottles…
The Monday Mail ~ help Kisa find a new fragrance
Today we’re helping Kisa, who wants to find her new signature scent. She’d like something sophisticated and somewhat exotic, and preferably something available in a range of concentrations — she likes to wear Eau de Parfum during the day and save Parfum for special occasions. She has a preference for classic orientals (see below) and lasting power is a concern; she says even heavy perfumes like Opium don’t last on her. Here is what we know about Kisa:
She’s in her early 60s, and has dark hair, fair skin, medium height and build. She is of Italian, German and Belorussian ancestry.
She retired from teaching (French and Italian) 2 years ago, and married one year ago.
Kisa lives in Long Island, NY; but loves both the city and country.
She enjoys gardening, classical music and reading, and she loves animals. She is also studying the piano for the first time.
Kisa has always had one signature for long periods of her life…
