French niche line Etat Libre d'Orange has launched Malaise of the 1970s, which appears to be their 2010 Sex Pistols fragrance for Sephora in a new name with the standard house packaging:
Relive the anarchy of Britain in the punk age with the Etat Libre d'Orange Malaise of the 1970s Eau de Parfum.
Inspired by a wealth of seventies pop culture references, from Star Wars to The Stranglers, Malaise of the 1970s captures the resistant and tumultuous spirit of the times. A metallic juice that resonates like the twang of a guitar string, its sharpness reminiscent of safety pins fastened to tartan. A distillation of rebellion, music and raw emotion.
This scent from Etat Libre d'Orange blends the piquancy of black pepper and electric aldehydes with the headiness of patchouli and leather. Like an act of resistance, you cannot keep it out of your body any more than you can stop breathing. Blast off the last wafts of patchouli tailing after the Summer of Love. Growl out "No More Heroes". Take off to a galaxy far, far away. and indulge in the unique malaise of the 1970s.
Additional notes include citrus, amber, prune and heliotrope.
Etat Libre d'Orange Malaise of the 1970s is available now at Escentual or Nkdman in the UK, in 50 ml Eau de Parfum, £53.

Safety pins fastened to tartan? Wha…?
It’s a reference to the punk look. Safety pins, tartan, leather, spiked hair, bondage gear.
Yep.
I would add bin liner to that list. Interesting combination of notes though. But prune? Honestly.
this name is much better suited to the fragrance! “sex pistols” was quite incongruent to the scent, i think. i wonder if it’s exactly the same juice or if it’s been slightly reworked…
I thought they weren’t a good match either…the scent was too tame to be for the Sex Pistols. Don’t know if it’s been remixed or not though.
The notes for this actually look really good. I like at least 70-80% of ELdO’s fragrances that I’ve tried so far, especially Like This, Rossy de Palma, Divin’Infant and Don’t Get Me Wrong Baby, and the last two or three releases have got me very curious. I’ll definitely sample this one and hope the line continues to do well because despite their attempt to be silly or outright controversial, they actually do come up with some lovely frags. 🙂
Agree — they generally do a good job, and the scents aren’t usually as outlandish as they imply.
So now they have rebranded a scent celebrity endorsed by a Rock and Roll band headed by woman killer, to now being named for one of President Carter’s most dismal speeches.
And there already are a set of real “Star War” scents. (No, I have not smelled them, but I have received reports of their existence.)
It they really want to go back questionable memories of the 70’s, how about “Stagflation?”
London punks were great and rather sweet, really. People used to be scared of them, but they always used to say ‘hello’ to me when groups of them met me in the street because I had bright dyed red hair. LOL! I had such fun in the 70s. *sigh*
Bravo to État Libre d’Orange for not putting an apostrophe before the ‘s’ in ’70s’. 🙂
Bravo indeed. Small things like that make me happy too.
I was so hoping that someone who had lived in London in the 1970s would chime in. I wonder what happened to your sweet punks? Settled in the suburbs now, surrounded by grandchildren?
Still alive and hanging around places such as the Chelsea Arts Club. Saw one of the Boomtown Rats there the other night and I occasionally see John Lydon in my neighbourhood, looking as colourful as ever.
That cheers me.
Me too!
Me too! 🙂
I am so glad that I a bought a bottle when it was called Sex Pistols. I mean I would still love the juice if it were called Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth but the fact that it is called Sex Pistols makes me treasure the bottle with the plaid cap and a picture of the queen with a safety pin through her nose.
With gas closing in on $5 a gallon and 1.5 million homes in or near foreclosure it’s only a matter of time before they come out with “Malaise of the 2010’s.”
