Michael Edwards will release the latest version of his “fragrance bible”, Fragrances of the World 2012, in January. The reference book lists over 8000 fragrances grouped by fragrance family, and is used by numerous retailers to help customers find fragrances they might like based on the scent(s) they already know and enjoy.
According to Edwards, 2011 saw a "record high of 1200 new launches", including 73 celebrity fragrances and 219 niche fragrances.
This year's edition features photography from International Fragrances and Flavors (IFF). It can be ordered through Fragrances of the World, and there's a 10% discount if you order before the end of January.

Sounds like a purchase for tax return time. I should have enough Amazon rewards by then. 🙂
Have you seen it before? Highly recommend finding a copy to look at before you buy — it’s something a store would find highly useful, consumers, maybe not so much — that is, I do know people who buy it and find it useful, but personally I don’t have any great need for it, and it isn’t cheap.
His Perfume Legends, on the other hand, is a must have.
I saw a copy of the 2011 Perfumes of the World in a bookstore somewhere in the last six months or so, and I opened it expecting something wonderful, but it was just…lists. Nothing you couldn’t find on the Internet, it seemed.
I’ve never seen Perfume Legends but I just Googled it and I can have a used copy for $366 Cdn, so perhaps not.
I would quibble with that…I don’t think you can find *accurate* fragrance family listings for anything like 8000 fragrances on the internet. If you need accurate & comprehensive information on fragrance family, in fact, so far as I know you’ve got no choice but this book. That may change as these apps from fragrance houses become more comprehensive — admit I have not yet looked at iPerfumer2, for instance. But the early apps I looked at didn’t come close.
But for most consumers, that information is not necessary, so yeah, just lists!
I got my Perfume Legends on eBay, but I waited a really long time for a good price. But I’ve learned more from PL than I ever did from any other perfume book in my collection.
