First a quick bit of business: Now Smell This will be taking a short Memorial Day weekend rest on Friday and Monday. There will be posts on Saturday, and possibly Sunday, and then Angela's regularly scheduled post will appear on Tuesday. Now, the poll:
1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?)
3. What's the next fragrance you'd like to test?
4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything — a great movie you saw, something delicious you ate, the perfect mascara you just discovered last week, any fabulous news you recently received — really, anything.
Answer as many or as few as you like.

1. SOTD is Musk perfume oil from Malin + Goetz.
2. This is usually what i dab on when I I just want something cozy, warm and without too much of a trail.
3. Going to the Hermes store over the weekend to have a mini-sniffathon. Should be good times!
ooooooo an Hermes sniffathon….lucky you!!!
Now pick me up a bottle of Iris Ukiyoe…..
I can’t say that I’ve been following their releases that closely…but I think they’ve been busy in the last few years. At the top of my list is the Pampelmousse Rose and ok…at the very least, I’ll sniff the Iris too!
Yes I’ve been waiting for a lazy poll!
1. L’Air du Desert Marocain
2. I’m at home with the family this weekend so my choices are limited (but I feel completely happy with this as an option!)
3. I’m going to combine 3 and 4. I’m going to Paris next week to stay with a friend and am incredibly excited to try out some bell jars (ISM!) I would like to ask if anyone has any advice for perfume shopping in Paris. Would anyone be able to tell me which perfumes are available only in Paris (or at least cannot be shipped to the US), are the cheapest In Paris, or have only certain concentrations in Paris? I live in LA so I have good access to perfume already available here. Thanks in advance!
I would go for those Bell Jars…..Rose de Nuit, Sarrasins, Rahat Loukoum, Boxeuses…..is your suitcase too heavy yet? On to Guerlain!
Lucky you!! I was in Paris recently and before going I printed out Denyse’s (from Graindumusc.com) guide of perfume shopping on the left and right bank. It was invaluable. She gives you step by step instructions (literally) of how to get from each perfume store.
It’s graindemusc.com, not graindumusc.com..sorry
Actually, it’s http://graindemusc.blogspot.com
Thanks!
I second the use of GraindeMusc’s itinerary for a perfume visit in Paris.
If you like Parfums de Nicolaï they are included in the tour and the line now has 4 shops in Paris. Their fragrances tend to be much cheaper in France than in the USA.
There are 2 Goutal scents that are only available in Paris. Eau du Fier and Eau de Monsieur. They can be bought in their Rue de Castigione shop.
If the IUNX store is still open (it’s store is next to the main entrance of Hotel Costes on Rue Saint-Honoré) you should check it out. It sells a handful of fragrances by Olivia Giacobetti in gorgeous bottles. They only have the one store and they don’t ship.
Caron perfume fontanellas are only available in Paris boutique, you have to try them, they are marvelous!
Patricia Nikolai boutique is amazing too.
Thanks for all of the advice!
1. Madragore
2. Wanted something cologny but interesting
3. The new Oscar de la Renta…….Angela’s recent review piqued my interest
4. Book: Railway Bazar by Paul Theroux. A page turner, best travel writing ever.
I want to try the Oscar de la Renta too, and utterly forgot when I last went to the mall. Next time.
Mandragore… What’s the difference between Mandragore and Mandragore Pourpre?
sorry I don’t know, haven’t tried the pourpre
Thanks!
I found the Mandragore fresher, the Mandragore pourpre is “darker”.
I love dark fragrances! But also seems that Mandragore is also a good choice. Have you ever tried any of the fragrances I listed above (Lolita Au Masculin, Burberry Touch Man…)?
Thanks!
No, I haven’t. Sorry…
1. Bois 1920 Sutra Ylang
2. I got it as an extra in a swap and have been trying to test samplesa at least once before they get put in the sample box, never to be seen again. Doesn’t really go with the weather and I must say I am not a fan. Lots of powder – where are the spices and sandalwood I hear about in reviews? Ah well, into the swap pile it goes!
I did not adore it either. But I’m not a huge ylang fan anyway.
You may want to try another sample just to make sure that one isn’t bad. This is such a beautiful scent (that or my skin just brings out the spices).
I think it’s just not to my tastes, which is a good thing – one less thing to buy! I don’t care for powdery scents and I tend to notice it even if it’s just a tiny bit. It is much better now that at first spray, but nothing I need!
1) and 2) I am wearing Comme des Garçons’ Odeur 71, because I am writing about it, and it’s sort of horrible, and I’d scrub it off but as usual it will not scrub.
3) and 4) I am going to be in New York in just over a week and I am going to try Jeux de Peau and I am probably going to buy it, too, unless it’s no good. But I doubt I will leave the city without a bottle of something.
4 redux) I got a Kindle two weeks ago and it is completely awe-inspiring. I’m reading more than I have in years, and it has built-in free wireless and 3G (like a phone line if there’s no wireless available) so I can check my e-mail just about anywhere in the world and oh, it’s just so perfect.
1&2. so sorry it won’t scrub off….it’s a cosmic law….maybe if you keep repeating “this is the best stuff in the world!” it will fade in 15 minutes…also a cosmic law.
3&4. mmmm I love Jeux de Peau !! mmmm warm buttery, apricot jam…so yummy and comforting! I hope you love it too!
also 4. isn’t the Kindle fabulous??? I take mine everywhere with me! did you get the lighted cover for it?–great for at night when “some” people can go right to sleep, your eyeballs refuse to close and a cat has decided to lay on your head and purr loudly…. Not that that’s how my night was last night….
WOO HOO – I just ordered a Kindle yesterday!! 😀
YAY!!! you’re going to love it!!!!
I think I will – I don’t know what took me so long. No enabler…. 😉
I love my Nook as well. 🙂
I can’t hear you – lalalalalalalalalalalalalaaa 😀
i have an “old kindle” didn’t like it…what about the ipad u guys?
iPads are very cool and do *everything*, but I just want to read, and the fact that the Kindle isn’t back-lit, and therefore easier on the old eyes, is what decided me.
thnx raps
I love love love my Kindle…it’s amazing.
I can never remember if it’s 71 or 53 that I love… but I think it’s 71 and I want a bottle! Sorry you hate it!
What is it like?
My friend really really wants to try it but she lives in the Philippines and doesn’t know where to find it to try it.
53 and 71 are sort of similar, but to my nose, 53 is unapologetically synthetic (in an intriguing way) from the get-go, while 71 starts as a cologne and gradually turns more and more mechanical and synthetic in an aggressive way that I find really unpleasant. Your mileage may vary, obviously. I don’t LOVE either 53 or 71 or any of the Synthetic series (which is a close relative of the earlier scents), but 53 is the best of the lot, with Soda a close second.
“As usual it will not scrub.” Ain’t that the truth.
I really prefer physical books, but I have to admit that I’m running out of shelf space and the Kindle is great for travel and out-of-print Victorian novels. I don’t know how else I would get to read “Tom Brown at Oxford”.
Understand. I love paper books to. Have stacks and stacks in my walk-in closet! But you can beat a Kindle or a Nook for immediate gratification: see the book online….click click …and you’ve got it to read! Plus you can have 100’s of books with you on a vacation or even just sitting and waiting (waiting waiting) at the doctor’s office. And….as you hit 40 and beyond…it’s nice to be able to change the font size 😉
oops I love paper books *too*
I love physical books, too, and I have a great many of them. But the Kindle is so portable; you can read anything anywhere, and if you get tired of reading a history of Egypt, zoom you switch over to a David Sedaris collection or a mystery or the story of Henrietta Lacks (incredible book, by the way), because you can carry literally thousands of books in the same small space, so what could be better for a plane trip or a commute or waiting in line? You can also turn documents on your computer into PDFs and read them on the go. and there’s the browser, and the MP3 player just in case, and the text-to-speech, and and and….
I honestly thought I didn’t need one. How wrong I was.
Since I already have a couple of clip-on reading lights, I didn’t get the case with the built-in book light, nice though it was: I bought a really attractive navy-blue leather case that was meant for the Kobo, which also happens to fit the Kindle perfectly. I thought I could do without a case until the first time I chucked it into my knapsack and had visions of the screen cracking. A case is a necessity.
if they can make a Kindle that has that new book or old book smell, that’s when I will crack and purchase a “full bottle”. *winks*
1. SOTD = Bvlgari Pour Femme layered over Bvlgari’s Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert.
2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?) Matches my mood and my clothes and the weather. i.e. mild & muggy, just want to feel pretty, yet casual. (Casual Friday at the office is the dress code today).
3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
Oscar de La Renta Esprit d’Oscar. Thank you Angela for the enticement.
4. I just may finally get around to planting some annuals in the garden as we have actually had 3 whole days with sun in them and counting! Yes, the sun does still shine in New England! We haven’t had 2 full consecutive days of sunshine since last October is how I feel…looking forward to smelling like spring earth later…Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.
Try Goop waterless handcleaner – it got rid of Bno9 Bleecker St. for me…
1. Mugler Cologne.
2. It’s the perfect summer fragrance, refreshing and a bit earthy, and I find it incredibly sexy.
3. Having recently got a bottle of L’Eau Mixte, I would love to explore the rest of the PdN line. Ditto Annick Goutal.
4. Film-wise, hardly anything wows me these days, but I did love Bright Star, Rabbit Hole and the superb (althouth bleak) Fish Tank.
Ditto to your #2!
1 and 2. Ormonde Jayne Champaca, because it feels like a spring scent to me and I’ve been wearing it a lot over the last few weeks.
3. I would like to finally test Chamade, because I’ve been hearing so many wonderful things about it.
4a. Last weekend we were in Las Vegas and I got to do lots of sniffing. I bought a bottle of Tonka Imperiale at the Guerlain boutique in the Palazzo (and managed to sniff just about everything except Chamade, unfortunately, while I was there).
4b. Book: “Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer.” Not exactly a traditional murder mystery, but fun.
Congrats on your TI! Vegas is getting to be an excellent sniffing destination.
Book sounds fun!
1.) elle by yves saint laurent
2.) it’s warm out, and i wanted something bright and summery. plus i haven’t worn it in awhile.
3.) i would really like to try tom ford’s white patchouli and black orchid. also, i just ordered bal a versailles unsniffed because i’m enchanted by the descriptions; cannot wait for it to finally come in the mail!
4.) well, i’ve finally started doing yoga! i’ve gone 3 times in the past week and it’s amazing the difference i already feel. i’m more calm, more grounded, and i’m stretching muscles i never knew i had. also– i’m going to europe for 3 weeks this summer! cannot wait!
I do the (no doubt very crappy) Wii yoga, and I love it for just those reasons. Really totally took care of my lower back pain, so long as I do it at least once a week.
love yoga!
Love yoga too, was hit by a car at 19, it’s the only thing that really takes care of my low back pain. I won’t do pain killers if I can avoid it.
Try Rodney Yee’s videos or Crunch’s Yoga video, that’s what got me started and I really enjoy them!
1. I love White Patchouli and Black Orchid.
2. Am I the only person in America without a Wii?
nope, i don’t have one either!
me neither!
I completely respect technology, that being said, I don’t have a Wii, or a twitter account, or an ipad or ipod or anything like that. Aside from the internet with email, blogs, research, shopping, etc, I am an analog kind of gal.
Pretty much the same here. And I only use my cell phone for phone calls.
Yay for analog! I’m probably the last person on the planet to neither own a cell phone nor an mp3 player. . .I have an Nintendo 64, though! LOL! (Ok, had to put that in there because my students think it’s hilarious!)
MR, what kind of games do you play? I’m fascinated by the technology of games, but battles, horror, and angry birds don’t appeal. Is there anything else?
No! I only got my MacBook Pro a couple of years ago. No time for all these toys, and put off by the thought that whatever I buy will be obsolete next year. Or next month, LOL! Might as well wait for the fabled final screen – the single device that does everything well. Which some say is the iPad, but I’m not sure.
I’m not sure either. I love our Macs (laptop and desktop), and I’m tempted by the iPad and Kindle and iPhone, but I don’t want a bunch of devices! Maybe if there was an iPad with a regular keyboard (built in, not separate)!
Right – and the whole thing wouldn’t weigh any more than a paperback book! 🙂
That would be the perfect device! 🙂
Mariclaire – I’ve done yoga off and on the past 20 years. I’m not very flexible, but I find that it makes me feel better in general and I sleep better too. Try the Yoga for Longevity by Rod Stryker, or Kathy Smith New Yoga Basics for Beginners, or Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss with Suzanne Deason. They really emphasize technique, especially for those of us not flexible, and have beginner poses. My husband likes Rodney Yee, but I think I would die if I did his b/c he is very flexible and strong too.
thanks for the suggestions! will try those out.
Yoga is great.
1. I’m hoping my SOTD will be Aimez Moi, because I think my bottle will arrive today (knock on wood).
2. I haven’t worn it in years, and then all of a sudden I couldn’t get it out of my mind last week. It’s cheap enough from discounters that I decided to splurge. Can’t wait to see if it’s as good as I remember!
3. The new Mon Numero line from L’Artisan. I really hope they offer a sample pack.
4. I was excited to find out that The Passage is the first book in a trilogy. It was very entertaining – like The Stand meets 28 Days Later.
I’m crossing my fingers on that sample pack too.
1 + 2
I am wearing Lolita’s Si Lolita, which I chose to match my preppy, rose cardigan outfit (Si Lolita’s pepperiness smells ‘preppy’ and ‘upbeat’ to me). Now that I was left the house and trudged to work, however, I wish I was wearing more, both in terms of clothing and perfume. It’s like the weather has travelled two months back in time and it is rainy, blustery, and cold out, and I am finding that neither my cardigan or Si Lolita’s sheer sillage can stand up to this weather. Wish I was wearing an oriental.
Oh, yeah, I hate it when that happens! Maybe you’ve got some back-up perfume in your desk or purse?
If only! Also wishing I had a back up sweater around, but I didn’t think that would be necessary into April. Wrong.
I suppose that Si Lolita is in fact an oriental floral. I wish I was wearing a STRONGER oriental, I should say.
1- SOTH Brasil Dreams for him.
2- I needed something seasonal but with a bit of spice as today is wet and cool.
3- Hermes Eau de Gentiane Blanche, Pamplemousse Rose and Ambre Narguilé.
4- The only wonderful thing I can think of is the fact that I was able to escape to the cottage last week for 4 days of gardening, BBQ, and falling asleep to the sounds of frogs singing in the nearby marsh.
ohhhh sigh, #4 sounds like a dream! that IS a wonderful thing!!!
Sadly, Pamplemousse Rose has terrible lasting power. I have a nearly untouched FB & purse spray because it simply doesn’t last. I can douse myself in it, spray it all over my clothes, in my hair … 15 minutes later, nothing. It’s a shame b/c I paid full price for it at Neiman Marcus — a mistake on my part since discounters carry it — and it’s a really lovely fragrance for summer if only it lasted long enough for me to enjoy it.
Your escape sounds perfect to me. I got a few precious hours of gardening on Sunday past, and have the bug bites to prove it! I can’t wait for my roses and iris to come in.
1 & 2: SotD of L’Heure Bleue. I’m wearing because I’m dressed in a blue animal print skirt — it’s classier than it sounds, I swear & somehow this is logical in my mind — and also the fact that I had misplaced my bottle of it in a small suitcase I’d forgotten to unpack over a month ago.
3: As for the next fragrance I’d like to test, probably one of the new L’Artisans. A few of them have me intrigued but I tend to flake out on fragrances I’ve been vying after & impulse buy something instead.
4: And I’m quite thrilled that today is my ‘Friday’ as I’m taking an extra long weekend off for Memorial Day. It’s the simple things.
Hope everyone has a lovely holiday.
I snickered at your animal print skirt comment only because one of my favourite skirts is pink animal print 😀 It’s surprisingly versatile and, yes, than it sounds. Because the background is pink but the print is black & white it works well with a plain white tee and simple sandals in the summer and a black sweater, black opaque tights and ankle boots in the colder months.
I was mentally picture ‘blue animal print skirt’ in the minds of others & was seeing this mini 80’s-tastic lycra nightmare paired w/ leg warmers. It’s actually a high waisted silk pencil skirt with very large almost watercolour spots on a blue field. I’ve got it paired w/ a navy crepe poet blouse & black wide belt & suede spectators. Animal print can be a lot of fun as long as it’s the ‘right’ type of animal print and I’m quite happy that it’s back in style.
Your pink skirt sounds simply fabulous.
Weirdly, I didn’t picture 80’s tackiness at all when I read “blue animal print skirt”; I instead imagined something along the lines of a pale, watery blue Monet painting. Anyway, your description of the skirt sounds lovely. Here’s to wearing clothes we love and feel good in!
With your description of your skirt and the accompanying poet’s blouse, I can definitely see L’Heure Bleue with it! You look, and smell, fabulous!
Sounds like a great outfit and yes, a very fitting choice of fragrance too.
Also totally agree about wearing the clothes that make us happy in general and animal print in particular!
1. OJ Tiare on one wrist and Orris Noir on the other
2. Have been obsessively testing OJ samples the past couple of weeks and want to give my nose a rest from Tai’f – I am worried that if I wear Tai’f anymore frequently, my nose will get used to it and never be able to smell it again..lol
3. PdN odalisque (hoping for a scent bar visit this weekend)
4. Reading Elizabeth Costello by Coetze and it is a wonderfully written book..
Isn’t Ta’if lovely?
It *is* though it wasn’t love at first sniff ..
I do think I need to try the OJs on paper- I think my skin amps up all the sweet notes- I am probably the only person who finds Ormonde Woman a very ‘edible and fluffy’ scent- I wish it was more disturbing on my skin..*pouts*
I love Orris Noir! It’s at the top of my OJ full-bottle wish list 🙂
I like it too..though not sure if it is FBW for me..
1. Sonoma scent studio Tabac Aurea
2. I love to wear it when it is sunny but cold out.
3. Ayala Moriel Schizm, Strange Invisible Perfume Heroine, Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental, Frederic Malle Portrait of a lady, Eau d’ italie Sienne l’hiver.
4. I am going to Greece this summer, Crete. Does anyone know of a good perfume shop there?
I don’t, but I’m jealous of your trip!
I’ve been to Crete a lot and have unfortunately never seen a good perfume shop in the south-west parts at least. Hania airport has the regular tax-free selection and in the pharmacies you can buy Korres products and scents.
In gift shops you can also find cheap solid perfumes in decorated bottles.
However, you can smell jasmin blossom in the evenings and sometimes you’ll walk past a fig tree that smells better than any perfume can capture it! Hawaian tropic is another scented delight during my holidays…
1. SOTD: Puredistance 1.
2. I have been in the mood for tropical/big white florals lately…I think it’s the NYC high 70s rainy/muggy weather that has me wishing I was in the tropics.
3. Azagury Eau de Parfum…a sample is on its way from LS.
4. I am loving my new iPad. Also for a movie of sheer enjoyment and delight see the documentary about Bill Cunningham the society photographer of the New York Times.
Loving Azugary! I think it will be wonderful in the upcoming hot, muggy days.
Tiara,
According to Tom’s review at perfumeposse, he thought it seemed very prim and proper, but lovely. So I guess very British. Do you get that feeling from it?
Tara
It is prim and proper but not stuffy (if that makes any sense). More graceful and cultured. Maybe more modern what with the whole backwards to go forwards thing.
I’m so bad about describing perfumes and picking out notes but I think this is rather pretty.
1. SOTD is AG Eau de Camille
2. It came in the morning mail!
3. I would love to test Caron Narcisse Noir but I’ve heard the current formulation available isn’t very good . . .anyone out there have an opinion?
4. Started a workout program I enjoy AND am sticking with – amazing! Even more amazing my non-verbal 3 1/2 yr old has said some “pop out” words – not mimicking others – like “ball” and “yellow” and that is totally awesome.
RuthW…congratulations on #4!!!.
Thanks you, I have my fingers crossed!
So how are you doing with EdCamille? Like it?
Congrats on the bebe being chatty! I was always more excited when mine began to talk than when they first walked. (And my youngest really did not talk much until he was 3 and a half. Since then, you cannot stop him – he’s turned into quite the chatterbox.)
The CEO likes to quote Bill Cosby when it comes to kids:
“…We spend the first 18 months teaching them to walk and to talk, then the next 18 years telling them to sit down and shut-up…”
😉
LOVE those old Cosby skits! He’s a genius.
Love the Eau de Camille, just what I was missing from my scent wardrobe. It is definitely green, but not bitter, with enough honeysuckle to gentle it without being sweet. I own Balmain Ivoire and find this much fresher and lighter but it still feels, for lack of a better word, chic.
Hi Ruth: I find Narcisse Noir to be very nice, but there is no way these days it can compete for my fragrance funds. Tough luck. I’ve never smelled the original though.
Oh, and Ruth, congrats on your 3.5 year old. Ours has a slight expressive disorder that I mostly chalk up to her being a very stubborn Sagittarius (or Scorpio depending on where you fall in the “new” zodiac dates, but we’re just starting some language therapy now. I have no idea where she got her stubborn independence from! Good luck.
Thanks so much and good luck to you too with your speech therapist! My little one is high functioning autistic and has made great strides socially (better eye contact, parallel play w/other kids) and we are hoping language will follow as well .
They can certainly work wonders these days! A former classmate of mine has a 6 yr old who initially was diagnosed as profoundly autistic. They caught it early, and you almost wouldn’t know anymore.
It sounds like your child has made good progress, Ruth!
It is both comforting and encouraging to hear about your experiences, thank you!
I have, love and adore my vintage narcisses noir extrait… dark and bright at the same time! sorry cannot help on the current formulation
Our son was similarly nonverbal. Spent hours that turned into months that turned into two plus years taking him to specialists and speech therapy (and even a child psychologist) trying to find out why he wasn’t talking. Tried so much; prayed so much more. He’s now 24, graduated from college, married, and, of all things–is a successful salesperson! He talks for a living! Who’d have guessed!?
Congratulations that is awesome!
i too had a similarly nonverbal son..he is now in hospitality!!!! Isn’t it awesome to see ur prayers finally come true!
today I’m wearing Dior Fareheit 32
I bought my it for my dad 2 Chritsmases ago but he gave me it last night so that’s why I’m wearing it today.
there’s nothing I’m dying to try at the minute. maybe the new Swarovski but I’m not really interested in it, I just want to know what it smells like. I saw it in House Of Fraser but had no space on my arms left to try it.
and my exciting news? today is my last day of college (apart from going in for exams). so now to find a job (I don’t want to go to University). hopefully I can find an accountancy apprentiship.
Fahrenheit *
Congratulations, Owen! I hope good opportunities open up for you.
thankyou Suzie 🙂
I just thought of something I want to try – Guerlain Idylle duet.
does the new Miss Dior Cherie smell any different to the old one?
or have they just changed the bottle?
It is definitely different – I have bottles of the old edp and the new edp. The new one is MUCH lighter, wears like an edt and is gone on my skin within 3 hrs. They are both lovely but I prefer the older version because there is more strawberry/popcorn weirdness and the base is heavier.
Congrats Owen! Good luck to you. 🙂
1. AG Ninfeo Mio.
2. Thanks to our Daisy, I’m addicted to Cruel Gardenia! However, change is good. Last night I made a list of perfumes I’ve been neglecting including Ninfeo Mio.
3. I’d like to try L de Lempicka.
4. Next weekend I’m going on a music/food/history tour of the delta in Mississippi. AND I’ll be finished teaching summer school.
It’s imperative you try L! (in my humble opinion…)
I second that with a caveat – I hate the first 15 minutes, to me it smell like orange baby aspirin – after that it is fabulous.
Thanks. I’ll try it and keep Ruth’s caveat in mind.
I love L, but it is a completely other scent as Ninfeo Mio.
1. vintage l’heure bleue
2. whichever scent I can smell in my mind that morning is the one I pick. plus, the l’heure bleue is a very recent acquisition so of course I have to wear it!
3. I’d like to try l’artisan dzongkha (sp?) next
4. something wonderful? I went on temporary disability a couple months ago for health reasons, and after going back to work I forgot that I’d filed for disability insurance. yesterday, almost $3400 happened to show up in the mail. pretty wonderful indeed!
Wow! That *is* wonderful! Good for you.
Glad you’re back to work (I hope it means you feel better)!
Glad you’re better, & congrats on the windfall!
1. SOTD: Chanel Chance edp.
2. I’ve been wearing this a lot lately, we’ve had a cool spring. I get a lot of vanilla, but it’s not too sweet, a bit spicy, and it just lingers so nicely.
3. I really think I’m going to invest in an Ineke samper.
4. Ah, something wonderful. My sister-in-law recently loaned me her DVD set of North & South (BBC, 2004) and it’s just about the best thing I’ve ever watched! I’m a big fan of Masterpiece Theatre and period costume dramas in general and this fits the bill! Richard Armitage is just dreamy!
I recently watched North and South too. Loved it!! In fact, now that you remind me, I might re-watch it this weekend.
OOOH, I just watched that in the past year, and LOVED it too! The BBC sure knows what it’s doing 🙂
Happy Thursday, everyone.
1. Kiehl’s Original Musk edt
2. A group of online perfumistas declared this “Musk Week”… hence I’ve made a couple of them the Scent of the Day.
3. I feel so “tested out”… but I’m looking forward to finally spending some time with Guerlain Vetiver pour Elle soon. Also DSH Antiu.
4. Something wonderful? Well, it’s May, and the weather has been stellar.
Jealous of your stellar weather, we’ve basically had very non-May weather this May.
We’ve had “typical” May weather for us – just multiplied! Lulled to sleep night before last with the tornado sirens! 😮
Yikes! I hope that is over soon for all of you.
1 & 2 Wearing Cuir de Russie in extrait for no reason other than because that’s what I found myself craving this morning.
3. Next I like to test SL La Myrrhe ….oh and I’m also really curious about De Bachmakov after reading so many wonderful things about it.
4.Ummm….I’m almost done with de-cluttering. I’ve been doing it for months and it’s finally feeling like the end is in sight. Not sure if that qualifies as “wonderful” but I’m pleased about it nonetheless 😀
Moving is a great way to de-clutter!
Oh, gosh, I find moving seriosuly traumatic. This slow, steady, one wardrobe/shelf/box at a time approach suits me better.
I agree. I just moved across the state and am amazed at the amount of “stuff” that accumulates over time. The good news is a local woman’s shelter got a truckload of furniture and goods donated to it.
Left the house without perfume! Spritzed on some J’Adore from my emergency perfume stash at work. This weekend trying some Xerjoff samples, and rather hoping I don’t fall utterly in love with any of them…
Yes, don’t fall in love, LOL…luckily for me, the only one I’ve really liked is the Iris, and it is far from my favorite iris at that.
I’m wearing the Chanel Cristalle EDP today — woody citrus. I realized on the drive into work that I hadn’t applied anything, and I have what I call my little “dime bag” of samples, so I dabbed at a red light. (much safer than texting?)
I want to test more Ormonde Jayne… Love their fragrances. I need a night of multi-sampling all over my arms & wrists. Maybe tonight, if my meeting gets canceled; wishful thinking.
The wonderful thing is that my Zephirine Drouhin rose bush is blooming right now. The rose in my avatar is from this bush. Such a heavenly fragrance!!
I love Cristalle edp. If this heat and humidity keeps up, it will be next on the list. I was wearing No 19 a lot the past week, and it seems like a natural transition.
1&2: AG Petite Cherie, because a) it’s hot and humid and I don’t like cologne and b) I’m currently taking a break from mowing the grass.
3: Up next for testing will be… the two variations on Laurie’s new summer scent for Sonoma Scent Studio.
4: New dishwasher should be installed today, replacing the POJ that doesn’t get the dishes clean!
C. – I’d love to know what you think of them. I just tested them this week, although I probably need to give them another wear or two.
I like Petite Cherie on paper, but on my skin it turns sour….
1. What fragrance are you wearing today? Amaranthine
2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?) Started with Bluebell today but I like a bit of spice and dressed up a bit more than usual…so added a spritz of Amaranthine…
3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
I’d love to try some SweetAnthems…a local spa carries this etsy line!
4. Share something wonderful with us!
The musicals coming to town this year…Next To Normal (love loved this in NYC! won tonz of Tony’s!) and MEMPHIS! Saw this at the limited engagement movie of the Broadway show…very good! Can’t wait to see it in the fall here! (can you tell i’m a theater nut!)
Memphis also swept the Tony’s last year!
“Memphis” is coming to Memphis! (where I live). I’m looking forward to seeing it.
I’m a season ticket holder here and the announcement of our “Broadway Live” shows is tonight! Can’t wait to see what’s coming!
1. SoTD: Cartier L’Heure Brillante
2. Chose it because I wanted something light and bright
3. Next scent I want to test: Vaniglia del Madagascar
4. Most fabulous thing to share with y’all: Portland, Maine! Yes, I moved here about 7 years ago. Portland is a foodie town. We have some of the most amazing restaurants and chefs. Many come up from NYC to take advantage of the lower rents and abundant local products. We’re spoiled!!! It’s a town of 35,000, but we have a symphony, opera, art school, great nightlife, beaches, fun shops, and LOBSTER! Ha. Anyway, best decision I ever made. Love it. Come visit sometime. 🙂
Oh, sorry – typo! Portland has a population of 64,000!
Your town sounds fantastic! How’s the book scene? Are there any local, independent bookshops there or are they dying out the way they are in most parts of the country?
Hi bookgirl! There are a few of them – Longfellow Books, and a great foodie book shop called Rabelais. There’s also one down the street from me here in South Portland called Nonesuch, and a few used book shops. But yes, Borders is also in town, and it gets a lot of business. Sad to see the independents die out. I admit I’m an Amazon fan, and also have a Kindle…so, I’m not helping much!
Amazon has a big distribution center in my town, so I don’t feel *quite* so guilty patronizing them, although we have a ginormous, wonderful indie bookstore here too!
Hi Karin: My husband is from Portland OR, and I always joke with him that we should move to Portland ME b/c it’s much more affordable! And now we’re used to tons of snow anyway. 😉
Hey, come on up, Ann!!!
I’ll see if I can find a good librarian job. 😉
Hey, my sister-in-law works at the USM Law Library – I bet she could help you out. 😉
1. Lonestar Memories on one arm, L’Air du desert marocain on the other.
2. I’ve been meaning to test them side by side. I think I might prefer the latter as it seems to me to be the more subtle, yet complex of the two; however, the former has a wonderful leather saddle/cowboy quality to it that I find so hypnotic.
3. I have so many on my list, but lately I’ve been in sort of a spicy, dirty rose mood.
4. I’ve started taking these exercise classes called The Bar Method, which is a mix of ballet, pilates, and yoga. It’s so freaking difficult, but I’m already feeling so much stronger than before and much more toned. Also, I’m currently watching the 4th season of Mad Men on Netflix, and I’d say the series overall is pretty wonderful. Jon Hamm is particularly wonderful to look at. 🙂
I practice the Bar Method too! It’s great for lifting the “seat” and slimming thighs-have you seen their new dvd’s? Haven’t tried them yet but will check them out soon…..
I need a seat lift! Off to google Bar Method… 😉
Don’t we all, Dee? 😉
Another Bar Method devotee! I haven’t tried their videos yet, but it might be good to integrate them into my routine. I’ve been taking classes at my local studio (and because I live in LA, I see the odd celebrity from time to time). It’s so addictive, I swear. My boyfriend tells me my seat has gotten smaller–not sure if that’s true, but it’s lovely to hear! 🙂
So far, I’ve done the original and accelerated workout, both are great for tush-tightening. I hear the new dvd’s are hard!
Spicy, dirty rose sounds wonderful – what ones are you looking at?
I just finished the last drop of my sample of TDC Rose Poivree, and am itching to try something similar. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m looking for something similarly spicy/unusual for a rose scent.
1. Mure et Musc.
2. Momma cats and kittens seem to like it. (see no. 4)
3. Azagury and some of the SoOud scents.
4. I helped two pregnant cats deliver their kittens this week and it was amazing. Now, I am witnessing these tiny lives develop and the feelings are indescribable.
baby cats!!!
*nuzzle*
Oh new kittens and mama cats, you are an angel, and lucky!
Kittens are such fun! How will you keep yourself from not keeping everyone of them?
1. Ginestet Botrytis
2. I’m in St. Louis, MO and we’re on like day 7 of total rainy dreariness. (Not complaining too much though, we could be poor Joplin!!) Anyways, it’s dreary and pretty chilly as well, so a warm comfort scent sounded like just the ticket.
3. Oh boy, where to start… I want to try the entire Andy Tauer and Etat Libre d’Orange lines, particularly Incense Extreme and Like This.
4. For years now, people have been telling me that I’d love the TV show Arrested Development, and for years I stalled and dragged my feet. Boyfriend and I just finished watching it, and guess what? Love love LOVE LOVE!!!!
Arrested Development is one of the greatest shows EVER! My husband and I are total addicts, and we discovered it at the perfect time a few years ago – right after our baby was born. Long nights, loss of sleep, arch family humor – it was perfect. We still watch it all the time. I want to be Lucille Bluth when I grow up, lol. But every character is perfect.
Oh, and you know, if you haven’t seen it already, you should watch the movie “Youth in Revolt” with Michael Cera. It is just perfectly funny and not what you think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbJyaO97QPY
1. YSL M7 Fresh
2. I wanted something interesting but office friendly–I had a morning meeting.
3. Cartier Les Heures de Parfum IV
4. If you have a chance and any interest, go see Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3D. It is such a wonderful, evocative documentary with just enough Herzog nuttiness to keep it off-center. I am going to see it a second time tonight before it leaves the city.
Oh, thanks for the Herzog head’s up. I liked his film about Antarctica a few years ago (and the Alaska one and many more).
That’s definitely on my “to see” list. Love Werner Herzog, although I have to be in the right mood.
Right arm Jeux de peau –because it’s cold and rainy (again) and I could use something cozy!
Left arm–Le Labo Santal 33 –because it’s new and I’m a little fascinated by it.
and a little Montale Boise Vanille down zee shirt.
yes, I know, it’s probably “over kill” but I couldn’t decide, I’m here by myself , who’s going to notice?
what I want to smell? Michael Storer Stephanie because I really want a great gardenia scent –got a bit on the way…wish the mail moved faster!
Something wonderful? well, this might seem a little strange…but I just got a new Dyson Animal Vacuum this week and I’m just delighted with it! Maybe most people don’t think about vacuums much but I’ve been so darned angry with my central vac unit—it was such a pain in the rear! I feel like I have finally defeated dog hair on rugs!!!
Hey! my package just showed up! Post-mowage, post-shower, I’m going straight for the White Gardenia Petals… Laurie’s will have to wait for their second skin trial.
Thanks v. much – mwah!
Mine didn’t come today….I’m bummed!
Awww… bummer. (Tomorrow?? Could be tomorrow. Get your antip-
-ation up.) 🙂
I got mine today, too! Haven’t tried it yet, though! Another one on my “to try” list. 🙂 Thanks again, Daisy-girl!
#4 Makes me laugh. I have never owned a properly working vaccuum. It’s on my list of things to purchase immediately when I really grow up (…in…a..year, or so, right?). It’s so frustrating putting energy into vaccuming and not feeling it’s actually working.
I’ll have to try JdP again when I get home, as it is also pouring rain and cold here, and hopefully I will finally get past the scary top notes to the coziness you speak of!
Sanitaire, the Eureka commercial line, is good for dog and cat hair. Casey the Lab mix, Patches the 85-pound mutt with Corgi ears and markings, Nikki the tabby-point Siamese mix, Korrigan the black-and-orange Halloween kitty, and Mitsouko the Maine Coon all hate the noise, but they don’t realize that it makes living with them easier. (They shed so that I can stuff pillows, of course!)
You have a Maine Coon named Mitsouko???
She’s white, with a few orange spots–the touch of peach.
A Maine Coon named Mitsouko….that is toooo cool!
I had a Dalmation named Nikki….she shed, but nothing like this white (yellow) Lab we’ve got! Stuff pillows? ha! no kidding….there is no explaining why this dog is not BALD! But I am in love with this Dyson Vac. ….got the Digital Slim for the carpeted stairs and it’s the best !
I need to research the breed…i know dogs but never heard of this. My late friend had two poodles…the NEVER shed and one is called CHANEL and the other CHANEL (the darker one is coco and the lighter chanel. My “tiger balm” mixed retriever and chow(we think) sheds like craaaaazy!
Maine Coons are large, long-haired cats with normal cat faces, not the Persian short nose. They’re a natural American breed. The “Coon” is because the tabbies (most common color, though they come in any normal cat color) have tails like raccoons.
Daisy – You’re not the only one who gets excited about vacuum cleaners. The CEO is a cleaning connoisseur and just yesterday as we drove down the local highway, he noticed a store named after a vacuum cleaner (with a German manufacturer’s name) and began waxing poetic about the machine. Apparently that would be his “ultimate” vacuum cleaner, so guess I’d better go find out more about it for a Father’s Day gift or something….
LOL! Many racing stable/horse show people rake their shed rows in a herring bone pattern. My ex used to *vacuum* in a herring bone pattern! I sure do miss having someone to vacuum for me!
Get a Roomba?
Wouldn’t the cats have fun with that while I was at work? lol!
Opera–could it be a Miele? I think those are German….and very top of the line in cleaning I understand. Maybe because I’m lazy (or because it’s HEAVY) but I don’t want to move my furniture every few days to vacuum up the latest batch of dog hair! So I love the “ball” feature of this Dyson….it really does maneuver around things perfectly!
I wish my hubby was a cleaning connoisseur….he’s more of a Pie connoisseur but I luvs him anyhow 😉
Indeed, it was. He wouldn’t shut up about it for several minutes and I had to chuckle to myself.
Best. Vacuum. Ever.
xo
Not strange at all. My best friend is in love w/ her Dyson. I remember the day she bought it we were all kind of marveling over it.
it is very cool 🙂
Lol, I can totally relate because got a Dyson Animal about 5-6 years ago shortly after getting the cats and it’s been invaluable. As far as cat hair goes, anyway, since I don’t think there’s a hoover that can cope with MY hair.
1. Wearing Vetiver/Guerlain
2. I chose it before I got out of bed, aching for something sunny.
3. Want to try OJ Frangipani. Because you smart, sensitive perfume people keep talking it up.
4. Recently discovered: Awesome mobile veterinarian. Fully tricked out clinic in camper.
Oh, I constantly see “OJ Frangipani” mentioned here. I would love to try also!!
1. SOTD is a tester of one of Laurie’s new summer scents – the non-floral one. It’s all I can say about it until she divulges more on her blog.
2. The decision to wear was simple – she sent it to me, and the last 2 days turned out to be the perfect weather for wearing this type of fragrance.
4. Both yesterday and today I wore it alongside 3 other scents based on this same note for comparison. Laurie told me about this project sometime last year and I went and ordered a bunch of different samples to familiarize myself with this new territory. It turned out to be a very good and now I have a little library of this new scent family in my ssamples collection!
3. Next Fragrance? Whenever Daisy’s package arrives, I’ll be testing out either AG Rose Splendide or WGP!
On #4 – I meant to say that it turned out to be a very good ….
Insert “Investment” after “very good”….
SOTD is Mon Jasmin Noir. I have a small decant, and wanted to wear something besides the lighter floral and colognes I’ve been wearing on this cool and pleasant day. I’m looking forward to testing White Gardenia petals and have samples on the way! And life, in general is pretty darn wonderful. I cold complain, but knowing people who are worse off humbles me and makes me grateful for all I have – including great scents and people to share them with!
Great attitude Maggie!
1) and 2) Azugary is what I’m wearing today. I choose it because it came in yesterday’s mail, I spritzed and fell in in love! Have even decided it’s going to be the perfume I wear to a wedding this weekend.
3) Can’t wait to try White Gardenia Petals! Mail is too slow!
4) I discovered this week I can put 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels in a brown paper lunch bag, folder over the top twice, and pop them in the microwave oven. Takes about 3 minutes but I turn off the microwave when popping slows (similar to how you do it if you buy microwave popcorn at a store). It comes out fluffy, isn’t greasy and tastes great. Tiny sprinkle of salt and we have a great (and cheap) snack. In sharing this with friends, I seem to be about 10 years behind the rest of the them as they already knew this!
Well, I’ve never heard of this trick, so thanks for sharing!
Yes, I’ve heard of this, but haven’t tried it yet. Nice to know it works! I’ve heard there are some nasty chemicals in packaged micro popcorn.
That’s true! The nasties are in the lining of the bag.
I didn’t know about the popcorn either!
I didn’t know either – thanks for sharing, we are a big popcorn family!
1. What fragrance are you wearing today? Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber
2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?) Honestly on a whim, because I felt like Earl Grey – it was my breakfast tea this morning as well.
3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test? Mitsouko has been on my list for a while…
4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything — a great movie you saw, something delicious you ate, the perfect mascara you just discovered last week, any fabulous news you recently received — really, anything. Something wonderful, eh? Well I guess I may have found a new foundation so that must count for something haha. NARS Sheer Matte – my HG was Shu Uemura’s Face Architect.
Oooh belletrist – am intrigued as to why you made the switch from S.U to Nars?? Am thinking of switching the other way myself 🙂
1. Nothing today, SSS Wood Violet yesterday.
2. I was in a hurry to get out to the DMV before going to work today. Yesterday I thought Wood Violet went with rain and a violet sweater.
3. I’m not getting any new samples at the moment so that I won’t be tempted to buy a full bottle.
4. While looking for a dramatic monologue, I rediscovered “The Midnight Court” by Brian Merriman. 18th-century Irish and hilarious. I’m memorizing an abridged version of the young woman’s complaint, in the Frank O’Connor translation, which is better poetry and somewhat less explicit, but less literal and idiomatic than this one (and not online). http://www.showhouse.com/prologue.html
(Yes, I can read the original, but I don’t think my audience wants to hear it.)
Tee hee – love the verse describing the bulging crone who seems to have too much testosterone!
1. I am wearing Herméssence Brin de Réglisse.
2. I chose it because I tried it yesterday and liked it a lot. A quick spritz — I won’t like it anyway — what is that??? I loooooove it!! I was anxious to try it again today, couldn’t wait!
3. I will test next another Herméssence I haven’t tried before — Poivre Samarcande.
4. Hopefully, I will go to Seattle in June and will get to Hermés store in person!
Warum: I’ll be in Seattle in August and a visit to the Hermes store is also on my “want to do” list! Talking my husband in carving out time to do that is another story! He’s an anti-scent kinda guy so while supportive of my wearing/buying, shopping along with me is pushing the issue!
Brin de Reglisse surprised me too — I really like it.
Hi all!
1. I’m wearing Bal a Versailles, wore it in H.S. and am falling in love with it again. I wanted something soft musky with a touch of skank.
2. I chose it because I wanted something soft and comforting. It’s been a bear of a year, I need some comfort! 🙂
3. The next fragrance I’d like to test is the Perfumer’s Reserve Aromatics Elixir, or the Fendi that was released last summer, I haven’t found it anywhere, don’t know if it was released statesside or not??
4. My something wonderful is my mom was released from the hospital this week (she has lung cancer) and she is back at home with her kitties.
Prayers and best wishes to your Mom.
I love BaV! Good for you to rediscover it now. Also, congrats and best wishes for your mom. Take care!
Best wishes to you and your mom. Kitties definitely help!
Best wishes to you and your family, SmokeyToes.
Prayers for ur family. Glad she is home with the kitties
So glad to hear your mom is home with you!
Hope your mom will stay well.
thanks everyone for your well-wishes 🙂
1. Absolue pour le Soir by MFK
2. Because my beloved missing decant for travel fell out of my pair of jeans that I left at the chiropractor’s. And my massage therapist said it was her favorite. But I want to keep it for myself. I don’t tell others around here what it is. I just call it “Cavalia.”
3. I want more samples of Tom Ford’s line. Black Orchid, and Oud Wood.
4. Jo Malone’s limited and irritatingly hard to find Sweet Milk, from the Tea Collection. So nice, lightly coconuty, funky and layers well.
Did you try the Jo Malone website?
1. Amouage Opus III
2. It’s comfortable
3. I would love to test the Gorilla Lush fragrances. I can’t imagine I’d like them but some say they are so stinky it’s good.
4. Fairydrop Scandal Queen mascara – It’s the bomb! It even makes my breasts look bigger.
Now that’s some mascara! Where do you get it?
HA! I believe sephora.com is the only retailer carrying it at the moment.
Too bad you can’t upload photos of before and after!
I am intrigued how the mascara makes breast look bigger???Need to patent that!
LOL!
1. Jo Malone – Sweet Milk from the tea collection
2. Picked it because I felt like something light and sweet. meant to be layered but has a coconut aroma i was going for with the spring weather.
3. would like to test the new Elie Saab fragrance… coming this fall… can’t wait! really hoping the fragrance is as spectacular as the fashion
4. just received excellent customer service from Amazon. so refreshing to feel satisfied and beyond… rare these days
YES, the Sweet Milk! Isn’t it great? I like it by itself, too. They came out with it again, but the SM was not available, so enjoy what you have! It does have a coconuty feel but that isn’t listed in the notes. So glad there’s another fan out there! Imagine the bath oil that would make!!
1. Bronze Goddess, the skin scent layered over the sunscreen.
2. I only bought it last month and it’s been 30 degrees C here recently so it’s perfect.
3. I want to track down Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia and also to go back over some of the Hermessences as I am doing a split with a friend on the travel bottles. Any suggestions for favourites?
4. We gorged on cherries from our neighbours garden this evening. Perfection.
Osmanthe Yunnan, Rose Ikebana and Ambre Narguile are my faves. Vetiver Tonka is nice as well. I only have samples of those, but wouldn’t mind a travel spray of any or all of those.
Vetiver Tonka mmmmmmmmmmmmmm heaven
Vetiver Tonka and osthmansus yunan…seconding the yuuuummmm
1.Le Labo Iris 39
2.Because I sampled this yesterday and love it, but cannot figure out what other perfume it reminds me of. Anyone have any ideas?
3.Le Labo Iris 39. Am I really going to have to go through all my perfumes one by one to figure it out?
4. Naturally long, lush lashes girls. Sorry. I’ve even been accused of wearing mascara, but I don’t. 😉 But then again I have hair on my back so………..
Better start sniffing, Bear! Hopefully Robin can help you with this one!
Someone just recently compared it to Iris Silver Mist, but I thought they were crazy. Maybe Angie will know? It is one of few iris scents I don’t like.
I agree, definitely NOT Iris Silver Mist, but wearable nonetheless.
It has an aftershave vibe to it. I will retest next week.
Today is Carnal Flower and it is FANTASTIC in the heat and high humidity. I think floral scents smell best in the heat, already 80 degrees @ noon. YMMV
1. Carier IV L’Heure Fougueuse
2. I finally smelled mate absolute a few days ago and wanted to reform my opinion of this fragrance (which uses mate extensively)
3. I would like to test Une Fleur de Cassie by Frederic Malle. (but don’t have a sample 🙁 )
4. Something wonderful. The Bridesmaids movie. Really hilarious for both men & women. Plus Joh Hamm is in it. He is wonderful 🙂
Oh and at first I was put off by the sour/bitter aspect of this fragrance, which I attributed to the mate, but the mate absolute smells smoky herbal tea. I also sniffed oakmoss absolute which is listed as an ingredient on the box… This acclimation to specific notes has allowed me to enjoy L’Heure Fougueuse much more.
Saw it last night and was really surprised at how funny and great it was!
1& 2. SSS Champagne du Bois. I have a package of samples at my bedside from SSS. As I was browsing through the scents, I saw CdB. The first time I tried it, I was “meh”. But since it receives so much love here, I tried it again and now I adore it. I even ordered a bottle today! I think when I tried it before I had tried some other things and did not get a proper “sniff”.
3. Xerjoff Damarose-Marina’s review made me drool.
4. I just got married to such a wonderful man!!! One of the first tests in our courtship was a perfume discussion-he was intrigued. When he finally saw my entire perfume (and orchid) collection he was not frightened away. The first perfumes I bought him are Voyage and Bulgari Black. He likes both.
Congratulations on your marriage!
mazel tov!
Congrats!!
Sounds like you got a keeper! Congrats!!
How wonderful, congratulations! And lucky you, he had full disclosure on your perfumista status.
Congratulations! And welcome to the ever-growing circle of the SSS CdB Fan Club!
Congrats!
Good perfume man husband….to love ur collection is to love u! (for better or worse)
Adding my congrats, and wishes for many happy years to come.
Congratulations, Dixie!!!
1. Donna Karan Iris
Sheesh. Didn’t mean to hit return. 8-0
2. I chose Iris because it was a sample that kept rolling into my field of view, demanding to be sampled. It’s nice, I suppose, but I won’t be buying a full bottle.
3. Next thing I would like to test: Hermes Jardin sur le Nil or Dior Escale a Portofino.
4. Wonderful thing: This is going to sound NOT wonderful, but ultimately, it is. I had a hysterectomy earlier this month because of a mass that was detected near my ovary. It turned out to be a very rare cancer of the fallopian tube. Please do not worry. It is a stage 1A, and the small tumor was very localized. The wonderful thing is this: I am going to be well, even though I may have to have chemo. I’m not happy about possibly losing all my hair; I’m very vain about my hair. But, I WILL BE WELL! Plus, my employer gave me a gift card for Amazon–I may buy a Kindle.
Queen! Glad they caught it early and you’re ok, that’s great news.
I’m so glad to hear it was caught early! That is indeed wonderful news, and I’m sending you healing thoughts. 🙂
That’s very wonderful news. Hoping you have a fast & full recovery.
Prayers and best wishes, so glad they caught it early!
I wish you a speedy recovery Queen Cupcake! So glad this was caught early!
Queen: How wonderful the tumor was found in the early stages! Chemo is not fun, but often a necessary evil. Here’s hoping it’s all over quickly!
Wishing you a speedy recovery, hope the treatment goes well!
Be well, be well and be well and…kindles r very popular today!
Oh, so glad they caught it in time! Buy the kindle 🙂
QC – Be well. I’m very glad for the early detection. There are many beautiful scarves to be had – maybe this will start an entire new hobby for you!
Best wishes for a full recovery!
Operafan, your comment really made me smile! I do collect vintage scarves, and have quite a few nice ones. I estimate that I will be bald by the hottest part of the summer, so maybe I should stock up on a few cotton ones, maybe some chiffon, too. Cheers!
Bibbidi bobbidi boo!
I have both of the scents on your wishlist and would be happy to send you some to try.
Drop me an email with your address and I’ll get them to you.
scentred at gmail dot com
Wow! Thank you–will do. XOX
It sounds like you look forward to a full recovery. Wonderful news!
1. Amazingly, no fragrance today. I woke up late, got into rush mode, and forgot to wear one (this NEVER happens). I’ll remedy this right now!
2. See above.
3. Still wanting to try Lutens’ Jeux de Peau.
4. Trader Joe’s Mac ‘n Cheese bites are delicious and addictive.
Re: TJs mac and cheese bites
these are the only reason I have broken my no-dairy ban. God they are good….
Drat. I’ve managed NOT to put them in my cart the last several trips, convincing myself that hey, they’re just mac n cheese…
1. SOTD – Byredo Bal D’Afrique
2. I was wearing my new glasses and was feeling something unisex and fresh with a touch of sexy. Something that would cut through a warm day in NYC. I have to admit – sometimes the vetiver comes off as salty/sweaty – but i still love it
3. I really really REALLY need to get my hands on some Ormonde Jayne samples of her florals – Tiare, Sampaquita and Frangipani. Already loving my testers of Ta’if and Woman. Champaca on the other hand smells exactly like Lancome “Miracle” to me….the nose is a funny thing.
4. I am hoping to close on my first apartment in the next month. I am thrilled, overwhelmed and slightly terrfied of finally becoming a homeowner. Harlem here I come.
<3 mayk
Congrats on your new home!
OJ Champaca smells exactly like Lancome Miracle to me too, glad to see that finally someone else agrees because I thought it was just me 😀
Congrats on your new home, that’s great!
Carnal Flower because the weather is so warm here in Austria. Love the coconut note in the sunshine.
I will try Le Labo in London to see what all the fuss is about. Very sceptical.
My two teenage kids, both with the Austrian National Karate team have a big championship on Saturday. Nervewracking! Chanel Sublime. Brilliant mascara. So ends my first ever forum entry.
Good luck to your kids! Thank you for sharing!
Hope the championship went well!
1. Testing Odin Nomad on right arm. Then put Tonkamade on left arm. Both are fading and it’s a nice spring day, not too warm, so I thought Panache would do me nicely (and it is).
2. Odin because I’ve been wearing Cadjmere for months, but this once might be better in warmer weather. Don’t know why I chose Tonkamade, bought the bottle and have not worn too much. Panache, because I’m a little chilly and I find this warming, but not too much so since it’s sunny out. I thought a LOV, heliotrope or lilac scent would be too “chilly.”
3. No idea. I’m always looking for the scent that will change my life 🙂 But I kinda wonder if there is any such thing…
4. I work freelance, from project to project, and have started a new project that is just fantastic – wish it would last forever!
Congrats on your new project, hope it continues to go well!
1. I’m wearing Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil.
2. Frankly, I picked it because I have this Ziploc full of perfume samples and I’m going through them one by one to figure out which ones I like. The Hermes was the one I happened to grab this morning. I’m usually just as random, though.
3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
I love the Diptyque scents, so I’m looking to try 34 Boulevard Saint Germain.
4. I just learned to crochet, and am making cute amigurumi birdies! Lots of them! I guess I should move on to new animals at some point.
At least you’re starting of with something small. When I learned to crochet/knit, I made the mistake of going big and lost interest before I could finish a project. I hope you do better than I did!
Oh believe me, I made that mistake when learning to knit, and put it aside for a few years. I eventually started with a scarf, which I finished, and now I’m an avid knitter.
1. Wearing JP Gaultier “Le Male”
2. I was running late this morning and had a sample in my desk. 🙂 Not very masculine to my nose…
3. There are so many I would like to try, but I would really like to explore Versace Versense.
4. Looking forward to Dinner & Dancing which starts tonight. The ladies in my family get together for dinner every Thursday night, and we watch So You Think You Can Dance together. My sister used to be a professional dancer, and we really enjoy our time together watching the different styles. 🙂
I LOVE SYTYCD and almost forgot it starts tonight! Woo hoo!
Versense is nice – and easy to find, so shouldn’t be hard to get a sample.
1. Samsara (pre-reform)
2. Heheheee…. I picked it up by mistake, Meant to wear Vol de Nuit!
3. I’m going to be sampling several of the L’Artisans, sent to me by one of the lovely peeps from here. Thank you! <3
4. I *finally* bought myself a Kindle yesterday!! So I don't even have it yet, but I can't wait. I'm a voracious reader, and I do love holding the real thing, but I'm being overrun (even with frequenting the used book store and trading in!).
Have a great weekend everyone!
The CEO’s family are all avid book readers, and when I moved in – books were all over the place – paper and hardbacks in closets, garage, the attic. In fact, my stepdaughter zipped through the entire final volume of Harry Potter book in one day. I have trouble remembering what I just read from page to page – unless it’s Opera News, of course!
The husband got his for Christmas and loves it. He has RA so the lighter weight has been especially helpful.
– got his Kindle, that is…
lol! I knew what you meant. I read the HP 6 & 7 in one weekend, but luckily I was able to pass them along to a niece.
Hehe, whereas, I’m re-reading the series. Again. Will probably finish just in time for the release of the last movie
I think I could re-read them. I was surprised how much I enjoyed a “young adult” series. But if I do re-read, I’ll do it on my Kindle! 🙂
love the samsara pre reform!!!! Njoy ur kindle when it comes raps
If I put my nose to my arm, I have the lovely remnants of sandalwood and vanilla. Ahhh…..
On me, it’s all about sandalwood. BTW – have you ever tried Un Air de Samsara? It’s perfect for hot summer days and has been a long-time favorite.
Believe it or not – no I haven’t tried it. What’s the difference between it and the regular Samsara?
More sheer, more fresh – which may seem like an oxymoron for Samsara, LoL! It’s got mint and herbs in there, I think. It’s a lovely version for summer. I used to work with Anni Buzantian’s husband, and when I wore some to work soon after receiving a sample – he commented on it (not knowing what it was) and called it “very discreet.” Think it was created around the time of EL Pleasures and the original Tommy and was perhaps intended to compete with those. Sadly it didn’t make it and got discontinued.
I’ll send you some!
Hello Everyone & Happy Memorial Day Weekend to those of us the US!
1. In the morning I put on AG Mandragore b/c I needed something refreshing and zesty – my allergies were killing me and it’s super humid up here. This afternoon (after much medicine and caffiene perked me up) I put on L’AP Drole de Rose. Love those roses!
2. It’s humid and suddenly very hot.
3. Next to test… I have no idea. I’m kind of in a blank space right now.
4. Something wonderful: After 8 long years of my hard work and 6 months I’d never expected to be so hard, we FINALLY closed on our tax free commercial loan for $3.4 mill for our NEW library building and will break ground in 2 weeks. Yeah for me! Yeah for all of us waiting 15 years for a new library building! As of next year, I’ll finally have an air conditioned office, geothermal no less, in a gorgeous and terribly functional new building!! Yipee!!
Mandragore… What’s the difference between Mandragore and Mandragore Pourpre?
A library is always good!
Hi Moore. I saw your question above, so it’s just as easy to reply here. This is off the top of my head, without looking up the other supporting notes for each. To my nose Mandragore is very citrus/bergamot and tea with a dash of pepper and light violets to ground it. It doesn’t have much of a base, so most development comes from the great opening (a type of tea cologne) and the movement into the middle notes – the violet and some woods I suppose. Mandragore Pourpre has a bit of that citrus/bergamot at the opening, but it is more subdued. It has a prominent anise note at the top, which I love, and it more aromatherpy like than regular Mandragore, which (again), I wear as I would a cologne. Mandragore Pourpre is one of my total “chill out” fragrances. It has more soft woods, less violet, and something softer in the base that is actually apparent – maybe tonka? – but some nice gentle woods. I just picked up MP last fall and so far I’ve only worn it for the fall/winter. I think they are both great. Good luck testing them!
ANNS, Mandragore Pourpre is anything like Burberry Touch Man, Arpège Pour Homme, Lolita Au Masculin or 212 Sexy Man (for me these ones follow the same vibe)?
Hi Moore – sorry I can’t help you there – I’ve not smelled any of those you mention. It’s always amazing to realize how much there is to smell! Good luck!
A new library building IS fantastic news! Congratulations!
Thanks so much – I am very excited. I want to sit on the lawn all summer and watch them put it up!
WOW!!! U deserve a great big Congats and well done!!! My mom is a librarian!!!
Thanks – there seem to be a lot of librarians or relations to librarians floating around on NST. We are a smart bunch! I can’t decide what fragrance to buy to congrats myself.
Ann – what an impressive accomplishment! I think it’s so great to learn such wonderful stuff about our fellow NST posters.
Thanks Rapp. I normally wouldn’t bring up something like that on the blog, but it’s been a project that’s ruled my life (and my family’s life) now for these 8 years. Aside from having a baby during that time, it’s been building building building forever and ever. They don’t teach you about land development plans and phase one studies in library school! I am so happy that it’s nearly over. I can’t wait to see our vision come to fruition!
I only know the tiniest amount about development because the ex did some with his father, but I *do* know that it is much more complicated and involved than most folks realize. So you really are to be applauded! I’m glad that you shared with us. 🙂
1) I’m wearing Eau D’Orange Verte. Someway it’s top notes remember me L’Instant Pour Homme (bergamot?) and I like too much it’s subtle base notes. I wish it could be stronger and long lasting.
2) I picked it on the net. I wear my fragrances according to my mood; sometimes I make mistakes and think: “why didn’t I use that another?” I only wear a frag according to my clothes when I need to be better dressed (such as parties). Also, sometimes I wear according to the ambience.
3) I want to much to smell Ambrè Fetiche and Mandragore Pourpre from Annick Goutal.
4) Great mivie Ive watched recently: Requiem for a Dream (ok, I know it’s so old, but…) and Caribean Pirates 4- Jack sparrow is such a funny stuff; 🙂
My son saw Pirates 4 yesterday & loved it! I’m behind, I still need to see #3.
Go see the #3 as fast as you can go! You don’t know what you’re missing!! 🙂
Hi All!!!
1. Today I am wearing JM Tea Fragrances.. Fresh Mint Leaf layered with the Assam and Grapefruit.. very refreshing…
2. I needed a pick me up from the sticky, humid climate outside my window.. and that was just the ticket….
3. I’m still dying to smell untitled by Maison Martin Margiela… it just sounds so great to me =)
4. I love sneaking off to see independent films in NYC.. So, tomorrow I’m very excited to see the new Terrence Malick movie, The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt… The Thin Red Line is one of my favorite movies and Brad Pitt is one of my favorite actors.. I can’t wait!!!
Please report back to me about the Terrence movie–he’s my favorite director. This movie will probably never come to WY, so I will have to rely on other sources. My email is: mou7gh@gmail.com. I hope you have a great time! Days of Heaven is one of my favorites.
1. I am wearing Lola by Marc Jacobs.
2. Because a customer sprayed it near me last night and as it kind of wafted towards me I remembered why I liked it so much back in the beginning. Also, it’s rather cool this morning, so the weather seems right.
3. I really want to try the new Lancome, and I also still have my list of Turkish Delight-esque fragrances from NST peeps burning a hole in my pocket (need to wait until I get into the city, where they may actually have them).
4. I’m really cranky – my work is selling Chanel 19 100mL EDP testers for $30(!!!!!!), and there is only one left in the whole company, it is over 1500km away 🙁 Same goes for the Coco 100mL EDP for $50.50. So unfair.
Hi Sheree-I am late on the net today- have you received Kenzo Jungle Elephant yet?
Purchase didn’t end up going through 🙁 Some life events lead to a little cash-flow problem… but scraping together the pennies, waiting for the next sale and it’s on like donkey kong. Thank you for remembering 🙂 lol. Mum was overjoyed when I told her I’d found it, think she’s planning on getting one too.
I know that feeling! I have promised myself not to buy any perfume for 12 months to see how much I can save. 1 month down & 11 to go! If I last the distance I may have a perfume shopping frenzy next April-May!
I believe in you!!! 🙂 I experience extreme guilt splurging on things like perfume for myself, as a uni student the $$ aren’t always easy to come by lol. Can’t wait to be a grown-up with a proper job! (Though I will miss working in fragrance)
1. SOTD: Tauer Reverie au Jardin
2. Because it was the fragrance that initiated a friendship between myself and one of my favorite people, and it reminds me of her to wear it!
3. I’ll be testing the Amouage Library series next week, and looking forward to it.
4. Dannon Vanilla Greek yogurt with fresh chopped strawberries: it is transcendently good! 🙂
I love Reverie- It might be my favorite Tauer..:) [though I haven’t tried his latest ones]
Lavanya, it’s my current favorite, but I think that I will like Noir Epicees alot. Must try it soon!
Oh dear, I didn’t love the Tauer Reverie, tho’ I wanted to. Nice lavender opening which warms beautifully, then the whole thing fades to nothing. I’m sad about this.
Marocain, on the other hand, I love unreservedly.
Reverie sounded perfect on paper, but didn’t work for me either – smells like scented wax. 🙁
On the other hand – I love the Vetivir Dance!
Wow, really? What a bummer, I know that you were excited about trying it. So sorry that it was a disappointment for you Anne Marie!
I swear that I get at least twelve hours of good sillage from it— as in, I never have to lift my wrist to my fact to smell it. My skin must amp it up quite a bit!
1) I put on sensuous this morning because,
2a) its winter here,
2b) I felt like something easy, (after wearing Daphne, Like This, and Chamade recently – all a bit challenging for me) and
3) I haven’t worn it for a while so its a nice change.
Got home this evening and felt like something fresh, sweet and fun, so I put some of my Philosykos sample on right wrist and AG’s rose Splendide on left.
Question: does anyone know which of these has the best lasting power 1) L.A. Fig 2) L.A.Fig extreme or 3)Philosykos?
I definitely think that the LA Extreme fig lasts the longest, at least in my experience. I went through a major fig perfume stage and just loved this one the most, although many prefer Philosykos. But for what it’s worth, I splurged and bought the shower gel and body lotion as well in the L’Artisan, and I imagine that the whole package was intensified because of that.
Yum, I guess you smelled good!
Premier Figuer for me – outlasts Philosykos by hours
Do you also find it better than the extreme version?
Sensuous is a great everyday fragrance and my hubby loves it.
I haven’t tried the L.A.’s (which maybe means I should be commenting….) but the light sillage and 2-3 hours TOPS of Philosoykos keeps me from buying a bottle. It is beautiful though, but so fleeting 🙁
I know what you mean!
SOTD: Osmanthe Yunan (why don’t I have a big FB of this instead of the purse spray?)- picked it because I was feeling peckish this morning and needed something that wouldn’t make me feel off…
I would like to test: Diaghilev and everything I haven’t tested in the SL non-export-line.
Good news: a decant of Diaghilev is coming my way!!!
Weepy news (for me): my wonderful amazing first-born (daughter) is completing her Junior year of high-school this week. She is the love and pride of my life and I am overwhelmed with the thought of how fast I know this next year will be. (and I am excited for her life unfolding- hopefully with beauty and enrichment and so much)
You are blessed to have such a wonderful daughter and she is fortunate to have you!
Thank you. Sweet words indeed!
Congratulations! I still have quite a few years to go with mine, but am in no hurry. Nothing makes time move faster than having children.
too true! My son is only 8 and those years have flown…
Oh, Helen – the letting-go process is hard, isn’t it? My daughter will be a junior next year, and I keep reminding myself that she needs to become *less* dependent on me instead of my hovering… (This is particularly hard, I think, because she’s my oldest. And maybe because she’s 5’1″ on a tall day.)
It is hard- and yet she is such a great responsible young woman- I am somewhat at ease!
my girl has always been super independent…from a tiny tot, she wouldnt sit in my lap and was always wiggling away… now she is going soooo far,,,from hk to washinton dc…(couldnt go further) and i cannot feel sad, otherwise…she will worry about me!…it is my second to let go…not easy!!!
I don’t have children, but I can offer a perspective from the other side. My mother had a really hard time letting me grow up. I think in my case it was particularly because I am the youngest and the only girl (I have three older brothers). When I went off to college, I really didn’t know how to be an adult and be responsible for myself, make decisions for myself, schedule my time, handle money, or do any other “grown-up” things because I had never been allowed to learn how, so I had to learn it all really fast. You more you are able to let go now, and let her become independent, the better it will be for her later.
thanks for your insight- I appreciate the sentiment, and I really do want to be the sort of mom who can let go enough to let her make mistakes and find her way without wagging my finger at her and butting in with my opinion unless she is asking for it! (Can you tell I did not have that kind of mom?)
Osmanthe Yunnan is wonderful…
Very!
Yes!
SOTD Eau de Rochas from a vial I got on eBay because Luca’s description made it sound interesting and good. First time I put it on my husband said “ooh, that’s a goodie.” I agree. I wore it today because it was the last day of a 3-day series of workshops I organized for students and I’d promised myself an FB after it was over.
I’d like to test YSL Y next.
Something wonderful: my bearded irises and my Siberian irises blooming at the same time – thanks to Chicagoland’s wonky spring.
Here’s a question: is Singapore a good place to buy perfume? I know there are some scent/cosmetic websites based there, but what about actual stores?
I have been meaning to look up Rochas as well and now you have put it in my brain to rectify that gap!
Iris are so lovely, there have been yellow and purple blooming near my daughter’s school all spring. Sorry I can’t help about the Singapore shopping!
SOTD: SSS Incense Pure
Winter is on its way here so I wanted something that suited the cold (not that it’s that cold by some standards but anything less than 20 deg C is cold to me!)
Would like to try some of the CdG Incense series, will have to order from the Perfume Court soon.
Have ordered a couple of books I am looking forward to reading “My Name is Mary Sutter” by Robin Oliveira and “The Butterfly Cabinet” by Bernie McGill. Also have some Black Cashmere by DK on its way I bought on ebay.
Oooh, congrats on the Black Cashmere— a must have!! 😉
1. Wore Nothing today… didn’t feel well and wasn’t that well rested so was kinda a BLAH Day!
2. see Number 1 🙂
3. Elie Saab… Just Sounds DELICIOUS! and love his clothes and aesthetic so hoping the Fragrance matches the brand!
4. Funnily Enough… JUST, and i mean JUST, Finished watching “Black Swan” and ws transfixed at the Sheer Magentism of the movie and how awesome a fragrance duo of the ideas behind the “White Swan (Odette)” and “Black Swan (Odile)” would make as Fragrances… in your opinion folks… how would the 2 fragrances smell to you… me for the White Swan fragrance a Delicate Romantic White Floral with Undertones of Citrus and Amber, Notes like Jasmine, Magnolia, Gardenia, Tiare, Lily-Of-The-Valley, Neroli and White Freesia with hints of Lime and Bitter Orange and Pamplemousse Blanc with an Undercurrent of Mint, Ginger and Thyme…. for the Black Swan… a Rich Earthy Chypre-Floriental… Black Pepper, Nutmeg, Sage, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Cistus, Vetiver Root, Iris, Heliotrope, Cycylamen, Wisteria, and Galbanum….
Your Thoughts?
Re: Black Swan/White Swan–put me down for one of each! These sound gorgeous!
Perhaps some dirty rose with the Black Swan…….
Oh, I agree! Rose goes with that sort of thing so well. And I know the Black Swan is opposite the White, but she has a romantic angle too.
Two rose perfumes would be awesome – one showcasing the pure and austere dawn rose, and the other – a dark. Cased in twin swan-shaped crystal flacons. Oooooh – I want!
I once read in a fashion magizene, “If you feel blue, wear red.” i.e., when you’re depressed, that’s when you should indulge in stuff that will cheer your up. Maybe next blah day, reach for that really special bottle or sample you’re saving for a special occasion.
1. Liaisons Dangereuses by Kilian.
2. It was a slow hot sleepy day and I felt this would help perk things up. It did!
3. I want to try the Diptyque Satin Oil advertised just today on Luckyscent–for body and hair. (Jasmine, Avocado, and Ylang: what’s not to like?).
4. Most wonderful thing around here is my new 9-week old tortie kitten, Willow! Adorable, buoyant, curious, sweet, furball!
I love tortoiseshell cats! Calicos too.
1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
Creed Chevrefeuille
2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?)
I had a sample I’ve never tried, so I gave it a whirl. However, it doesn’t suit me. I smell a sour middle note that I just can’t love.
3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
I’m waiting for a sample order at the moment. It includes Ginger Pear and White Gardenia Petals by Illuminum.
4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything —
I’m going to Italy this summer, so I’ve been looking into perfume shopping opportunities in Rome. All advice and suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
QUESTiON: Has anyone here tried Floris Wedding Bouquet and/or Creed White Flowers? I’m in a white flower sort of mood at the moment I guess. Your thoughts about these fragrances would also be gratefully appreciated.
Haven’t tried the Floris, but the Creed was pretty screechy on me. I’m a big jasmine lover, not so much the tuberose scents – my favorite white flower scent being Mahora. Lots of folks on here are fans of the OJ white flower scents. Also, Laurie of SSS is working on a white flower scent that promises to be very nice. Should be ready very soon.
Thank you for the information! Too bad about the Creed. Fleurissimo is one of my reliable go-to fragrances. I have to admit that I didn’t love Mahora the one time I tried it, but I guess it is due for a second airing if I can find the sample (among many). Looking forward to the SSS!!!!
Sounds like we have either opposite tastes or skin chemistry! lol! So I’d say you should probably try the White Flowers; it just might work beautifully on you.
1. a) today – Iris Nobile, b) tonight – DelRae Mythique
2. a) just seemed right for a rainy spring day, b) ’cause I luv it and need a scent hug
3. Amouage Epic Woman
4. ordered a Thundershirt that is supposed to help my dog relax during thunderstorms and fireworks. Fingers crossed! Anyone tried it?
Here’s the link in case anyone else is interested:
http://www.thundershirt.com/
Lol at “scent hug” – it’s perfect and I know exactly what you mean!
I’d like to hear how that Thundershirt works for your dog!
Good luck with your pup. Thundershirts have been recommended by many experts and I’ve heard good things. Haven’t used one for my dog – we live in San Diego and I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve had thunder in the 10 years I’ve lived here. If we lived elsewhere, I might have to get one – Gilbert totally freaked out during the one storm that lasted more than 1 or 2 booms.
1. Fleur de Citronnier
2. It’s cold and blustery and I felt wanted something soft and feminine.
3. FM’s Portrait of a Lady
4(a) Have just found out I’m pregnant!! Very long awaited and wonderful news 🙂
4(b) Sample of Portrait of a Lady coming my way shortly!
Super news, how exciting!
Oh this is very big and great news….we say in our religion BESHAAH TOVAH…which means…in a good hour! Not quite congrats until the “good hour” that the baby will be born.
DJ – congrats on your news! Best wishes and lots of health. You’ll have to keep us posted on how your nose changes. I found myself liking things I didn’t and that I had most trouble with smells after pregnancy when I was still breastfeeding. Good luck!!!
Congratulations!
Hooray! Congrats on the baby!!! 🙂
Great news! Congratulations 🙂
Yay!
Late Autumn-very late-only reaching 15c today so decided to wear Mauboussin, and its lovely. That answers question 1 and 2.
Weirdly, Im looking forward to testing Oh Lola when its available.
Being cooler, here, I have had chocolate cravings so tried some new Cadbury Mousse Chocolate-it was yum, but I felt so guilty eating it that I gave it to my husband and son.
Mauboussin is a great fall fragrance!
1and 2 My cat and I are wearing Bel Respiro to celebrate his very clean mouth. (He had a dental yesterday.)
3. CDG Avignon and Montale’s Full Incense
4. As of movies, I liked “Blue Valentine’s” a lot.
As of food, we are having a Copper River salmon this week … Yum.
Also , a trip to The Perfume Shoppe in Vancouver.
Aw, kitty smells nice 🙂
1. Creed Acqua Fiorentina over Weleda Citrus body oil.
2. Fiorentina is my most recent buy. I got it at the clearence sale at what once was perfumebay.com. for a steal,. A steal, I tell you. And it really blooms in the pre-summer rain we’ve got here today.
3. That illusive Infusion de rose sits firmly at the top of my to try-list. Also interested in Lush Imogene rose and Prada Candy.
4. If you haven’t seen Atonement, do so. It’s a beautiful movie.
I love those Weleda oils…my favorite is Sea Buckthorn, which smells like an orange creamsicle.
Tried Jasminora today as the CEO was in Singapore airport and texted me that it smelled good!….Wanted to try the insolence edp after victorias review..so the kind saleslady gave me some in a bottle to take home and try this evening. (1 and 2)
I would like to test Insolence edp (3)
My daughter is FINISHED her schooling, exams and prom night r OVER….what a milestone….I wanted to get her some Chanel 18 for her 18th birthday…..she really didn’t like it!!! Oh well perhaps DG Anthology 18! (she likes no 3)
Congrats on all the milestones for your daughter! You know, I’ve repeat tested No 18 for about 3 years now. I want to love it – I love many Chanels and roses too. But every time I test it, I get the same thing – a cold herbal, very rooty, very twiggy – almost like some natural medicine or something. It’s a total bummer. It’s good she has an idea for something else special to want.
thank anne…funny..i get fresh young and a very unique smell of no18…it may be the rose ambrette pairing….will have to resmell and see if i can get what u do!!!
Congrats to your daughter! Mine will turn 16 on Monday, and I know we’re going to be heading into those waters… sigh.
Maybe you could just give her something she picks out? I get the significance of No. 18, but it might mean more to her if she gets to pick out her gift.
came home with the DG 18 on one wrist and 3 on the other…and she likes both!!! she is one tough minded girl (all my kids r ) and enforcing my taste would never work!!!
more important, thanx for the congrats….and happy bd for ur girl!!!
Oh, do not blame her. I have a 19 year old college girl, and she onlu likes one frag- Dior Petite Cherie EDP. Hope the girls will widen her olfactoriy horizons one day…
I mean Miss Dior Cherie, of course. 🙂
Maybe, but i think different kids r different…my 13 yr old son is more interested an accepting of smells and loves his dads jubi XV11 and vetiverio..etc…
Ormonde Jayne Frangipani Absolute
because I just got the bottle yesterday.
Want to test something by Annick Gotul.
A wonderful thing is Serge Lutens Louve with a touch of Tresor underneath.
Thursday, I went into NYC to visit some college friends and go to a museum. I wore Geranium Pour Monsieur because it makes me feel clean and fresh.
Today, it’s Vanilli Insensee, because I just wanted to.
The next scent I would like to figure out is L’huere Bleu. I have decided I must have it, but in which concentration. I have Mitsouko in EDP but it can be a little over powering. Any thoughts anyone?
As for something beautiful, I recently saw “Memories of Forgotten Dreams,” a documentary film by Werner Herzog about a beautiful cave in southern France, with the most elaborate, beautiful cave paintings ever found. In a short segment, a perfumer who described himself as the former head of France’s perfume counsel, was shown smelling into the moutainside and explained he was trying to detect hidden caves through his sense of smell.
Dilana, I own L’Heure Bleue in EDT and extrait, and heathen that I am— I prefer the EDT! I should point out that I have not tried the EDP (Must remedy this!) 🙂
Opinions vary, but I like them all.
Adding: I agree about the Mitsouko EDP. Too much for me too. I stick with the EDT. I’m a heretic, like dee!
1. Hugo Naturals Patchouli/Sandlewood massage oil
2. Forgot about it and rediscovered it last night
3. Untitled
4. My new Kanebo Ginza Red lipstick – LOVE!!!
I tried Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Absolue Pour le Matin on this evening. This modern and chic Iris is spot on! Its citrus note last longer than I thought. With a La Male’s vanilla touch, I can’t wait to own a bottle asap.
And that’s my first time I said to an iris perfume. For real!
I’d love to try every FK’s perfume if possible. Seriously! 🙂
I’m late to the party, for the reason in no. 4 below:
1) I’m wearing Oha, which is one of my new favorite perfumes. My search for the perfect rose scent finally led me to this one, which has enough other stuff going on to keep the rose from getting too thin or sour, but still features the rose prominently in center stage.
2) I picked it because I just love it and wanted to wear something today that I know I love and that makes me feel good.
3) I would like to test Amaze by POTL, but am having trouble finding samples. It sounds right up my alley, particularly as everyone says it is quite unlike Luctor et Emergo (which I did not like!), but of course I will not buy unsniffed.
4) I just bought a new car! OK, it is a used car, but it is new to me. It was rather sudden; five days ago I had no idea I would be buying a car this week. Our old car (1991 Buick Park Avenue, 265,000 miles) let me know on Monday that it wants to retire now. I will still probably have it looked at to see what it would take to get it in running order, but it has definitely seen better days. I had been holding out hope that it would make it to 300,000 miles, but I realize not many cars make it that far.
Hi Roses – congrats on your new car! I hope it lasts as long as your old one did.
And believe it or not, I have a partial sample of Amaze that I will pass along to you. It’s at a little less than 1/2 so not much there, but maybe better than nothing? Email me at rappleyea11 at yahoo dot com if you’d like me to send it to you.
Oha is really beautiful.
And congrats on the new (to you) car! Honestly, that’s the smart way to do it. I bought a new car once… ONCE. It was a Saturn 4 door, in 1995, when I was great with First Child. We had to sell it when I was suddenly great with Third Child – surprise! – and we found that three car seats would not fit across the back seat. Replaced it with a used minivan. Other than that, we’ve always had used ones and driven them until the repair costs were greater than replacement costs.
I’ve only ever had one new car in my life. My “new” car is actually the first one I have owned in a model year starting with a 2. New or used, I believe in driving a car until it is just too irritating to put up with any more, which is what has happened with my old Buick. It is not so much the repair costs as it is the frequency of repairs. I don’t feel that I can trust it to get me where I am going without breaking down or causing me to have a wreck.
1. Micallef Gaiac
2. It’s unseasonably cool. I wore a warm brown dress to match my fragrance.
3. I’m dying to try Piper Nigrum. I just know I will love it.
4. I have a windowbox full of French marigolds. That may seem like a small thing, but I haven’t planted anything there for a couple of years because I was (or thought I was) too busy and too tired from work. But I’m retired now. YAY!!!
Hi, Haunani! I’m counting down to retirement in September, so I loved hearing about your French marigolds. I’ll most likely work part-time for several years, but still hoping for some greener time, too.
Piper Nigrum sounds interesting. Looking forward to your impressions in future polls!
Hooray for you, Noz, and hooray for retirement!
1. CB i hate perfume crushed fig absolute / BPAL embalming fluid
2. I was hoping my perfume choice would evoke the sun to come out from behind the clouds. It’s almost June already! I’m ready for spring!
3. I’d like to try Mon Jasmin Noir just to compare it to the original.
4. I never realized how fantastic dark chocolate is when dipped in a teensy bit of sea salt. If you haven’t done this yet, do it. I see chocolate in a whole new way.
Sort of envious of those wishing for summer, because we’re already into the unpleasant hot, humid side of summer here in the DC area. I plan to stay indoors and in denial, so I’m testing SL Boxeuses today. First impressions recall the violet facet of Bois de Violette and a summary of the osmathus-leather Daim Blond, with a sharper, almost medicinal edge. Interesting! Will report back on the dry down.
Has anyone else tried Boxeuses? I’d love to hear your impressions!
It’s Memorial Weekend here in the states, so I’m enjoying a long hot weekend in Central Florida.
1) SOTD is Bond No 9 Bryant Park and I am wearing an oufit with pink and black.
2) I have noticed that I match my scent to the color of my clothing. This is something that has recently evolved. Clearly the color of clothing I choose to wear each day subconciously matches my mood and the corresponding scent matches my clothing and my mood. Interesting how complex and intimate this relationship with scent becomes.
3) The next scents I want to sample are SSS To Dream and Champagne de Bois and Lieu de Rieves. Really want to explore and venture into this line.
4) Great news, I’ve been diligent about meditating every morning and evening; and I feel great! Also I went to the Farmers Market this morning and got some wonderful fresh veggies and fruit!
Have a great day everyone!
The SSS line is really wonderful–well-crafted, long-lasting, and reasonably priced. Champagne de Bois is one of my very favorite perfumes from any line, but I find it a little overwhelming in hot summer weather. If by some chance you find you don’t care for it right now, save it and try it again in the fall when it is cooler.
Seconding the SSS line in general and CdB in particular. This scent has achieved HG status for me; it’s one I couldn’t be without. I’m one who wears it all summer, granted our summers aren’t *quite* as hot as where 50_Roses lives, but we’ll be in the 90’s and humid today.
Incense Pure and Cameo are also favorites of mine.
Thanks 50_Roses and Rappleyea. Now I’m even more excited to give SSS a try! I will let you know how my sampling turns out.
I just got back from downtown SF and have a couple of pieces of news. First is that the “discontinued” Virgilio (50ml and 100ml) and L’Eau Trois (100ml only) are back at the Diptyque boutique. They said they didn’t order them, they just show up from time to time in their shipments from the home office. Also, Frederic Malle will be at Barney’s Saturday June 18. Just stop by to reserve a place or call Cristina in the fragrance department.
Sniffed Virgin today (Different Company) and it smells very much like Tonkamande — Tonkamande is a little sweeter…
I got a sample of Saharienne YSL. When I didn’t know better I would say it is a new version/flanker of Escale de Portofino by Dior. Has anyone have the same experience or is it just my nose?
Yeah, well I was too quick. I meant a new version/flanker of Les Escales by Dior….
