A simple game: name a fragrance note you like, others can reply with their favorite perfume with that note. Got it? I've started with jasmine...

Jasmine.
eau de Gucci, maybe . . .with the caveat that on any given day, it might well be something else, since I love jasmine!
Parfumerie Generale – Drama Nuui
Divine L’ame Soeur !! so very gorgeous…it’s on my ‘ to-buy ‘ list…unfortunately my piggy bank has VERY recently been emptied
😉
I like all the jasmine scents no one else likes: Rumeur, Bulgari Voile de Jasmin… And I know it’s not a huge jasmine note, but I swear I can smell it in Chanel no. 5, which I dearly love.
Jasmine et Cigarette!
Patou Joy
Yes, Joy!
i love joy!!!
Vintage Joy parfum….mmmmm. And TDC Jasmine de Nuit 🙂
Parfums de Nicolai Sacrebleu
My HG scent…
Love Sacrebleu…
Is the jasmin predominant in this? Or is it one of those secret jasmin scents, all the other notes dancing in a circle, jasmin just a bead on the string?
To me, definitely the latter, Erin.
the imaginary lovechild of Keiko Mecheri Jasmine and SL A La Nuit
LOL…cheating, cheating!
La Haie Fleurie by L’Artisan. Mildly animal, highly presentable jasmine.
Thé pour un Été, L’Artisan.
yes seconded wonderful!
Je Reviens
TDC “Jasmin de Nuit”/
Nice one. 🙂
TDC “Jasmin de Nuit”.
La Maroc Pour Elle . . . guess it could also go under rose.
Jasmine’s tough – there are so many wonderful ones! For me, Henry Dunay’s Sabi stands out.
Joy, Le Parfum de Therese, Le Labo Jasmin, SL Nuit de Cellophane
Thérèse! And 31 rue Cambon
SL A La Nuit maybe?
Actually I love the scent of plain unadultrated jasmine grandiflorum absolute!
Yes! I agree, SL A La Nuit is the only one that comes close to satisfying jasmin craving for me. Which jasmin oils do you use?
I got some jasmine absolute(both sambac and grandiflorum) and concrete from a supplier in South India..
I got a sample vial from Eden Botanicals which was lovely too.
Grandiflorum straight out of the vial RULES!!!! 🙂
Also, if you live in a big city (mine’s Vancouver) and walk past a Persian carpet place, take a quick detour inside. Sometimes the owner will have some jasmine extrait “under the counter.” It’s sort of a family thing; somebody’s always got a connection to jasmine and rose in bulk from the old country. My guy on Burrard near 7th (FYI for locals) syphoned about 5-8mls from a Pepsi-sized glass bottle into a small glass roll-on for $20. He didn’t know the origins, but to my nose it smells like a particularly indolic grandiflorum and has a sillage radius of about two blocks. Mmmm.
MMMMMMmmmm
I am beyond jealous!!! I would LOVE to have access to jasmine absolut as well as the carpets!
Olène! ( Diptyque)
Montale Jasmin Full and Opus Oils Jitterbug
I second the motion 🙂
I do enjoy a refreshing L’Occitane The Au Jasmine in the summer…
Jasmine Noir, by Bulgari
Badgley Mischka Fleurs de Nuit
Sampaquita (does that count?)
Ooh I’ve been dying to try that one! It should count, “sampaquita” is sorta-kinda Tagalog for jasmine sambac.
Jasmine: “Enlevement au Serail” Parfums MDCI
or
“Alien” Thierry Mugler (really).
Really liking the new EL Private Collection Jasmine White Moss. Just tried it today, actually, and am lemming a bottle.
CHANEL NO.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jasmine: Serge Lutens “Sarrasins”, for an “animalistic” flower with an ink-blue blood.
lime
PdN Vanille Tonka !!!! yay, did I beat Mals to the punch?
(Yes, you did!) But definitely, I get lots of lime in VT (and love it).
muwahahahahha! 😉
Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin
Creed Virgin Island Water!
The sadly discontinued Slatkin Persian Lime and Mimosa.
i Profumi di Firenze Brezza di Mare
Jo Malone Lime, Basil, Mandarin
Jo Malone French Lime Blossom
Honestly? Crabtree & Evelyn’s “Jojoba” scented products. The lime in them is so “Old World”. It’s excellent.
Frangipani Absolute (lime PEEL, anyway).
ohhh, Lydee—-love your gravatar!!!
Creed’s Virgin Island Water–at least for a few seconds.
OJ frangipani!!! lime peel…
Creed Selection Verte. Lasts ages for a citrus and fits like a well cut suit.
Floris Summer Limes
CUMIN
Rochas Femme!
Not the vintage, though. 🙂
McQueen Kingdom.
Making you a potential evil twin in scent… 😉
Kingdom is one of my favorites
Diorella
cumin in diorella? really?
tons 😉
I had no idea it was in there! Hmmmm
No way!!!!!!!!!!!!! Name your source, woman. 🙂
Serge Lutens Arabie
ack!!! running away, flailing arms in distress….
Trying not to trip over Daisy’s feet as I follow quickly behind…
Ha ha…me, too!!!
Let’s hide further down in the blog…say, under ‘rose’ ….like an emergency escape plan.
Ha ha…love it!
Coming with…
Daisy –
I noticed that cumin was one of the notes listed in that beautiful green bottle of Amouage Epic! Just sayin….
you party pooper Rapple!!! but I have samples on the way! I think this might be one of those times when the men’s version wins out!
SL Muscs Koublai Kahn
Idole de Lubin
Uh oh…had to come back up…like this one…
hmmm Lubin Idole is RUM on me….Robin had to tell me what it was…I’m clueless about anything alcohol past a Mike’s hard lemonade. (what can I say? I’m a cheap date) {somewhere my CEO is overcome with laughter…..}
Idole is also almost completely RUM on me [and yes, the capital letters are entirely justified 🙂 ] and I also am completely ignorant about alcohol, since I’m still underage. It made for a very interesting Christmas Day, but since I get rum and pine, it was quite appropriate nonetheless.
As boozy as Idole is, it’s still not as bad on me as SG Chypre Rouge. My grandma informed me that I smelled like hangover and if I wore it to church she’d die of embarrassment. Haha!
LOL !! yeah, maybe not the best for church….the next sermon might get directed at naughty underage girls drinking, not mentioning any names of course…
…especially since I’m the associate pastor’s daughter. Of course, I still get a kick out of wearing Passage D’Enfer to church every so often. 🙂 Teehee…
Montale Amber and Spices and Rochas Femme
Déclaration, Cartier.
Eau D’ Hermes
TDC Rose Poivree
Home made tortilla soup….
May I come for lunch? 🙂
Fendi, may she rest in peace….
Cumin? In Fendi? The first Fendi scent??? God I had no idea, and that scent is my Holy Grail!!
“Serge Noir” by SL!
Safran Troublant –it may not list cumin, but I get it as part of the Troublant part!
Gucci Eau De Parfum!
BOIS 1920 Agrumi Amari di Sicilia:
Grapefruit, Lemon, Cumin, Orange, Mandarine, Petitgrain, Jasmine, Patchouli, Lime, Lavender, Sandalwood, Cassis, Musk
Sexy on a warm male in the summer heat. . .Sigh. . .
Aldehydes!
Choices, choices! Chanel no 5 parfum !!!
I 2nd this! I’ve worn it for the better part of a decade.
One of my all-time favorites. One of the few perfumes that I’ve gone on to buy a second bottle of. Usually I can’t even use up a bottle of something before I get sick of it, much less buy a second bottle.
Serge Lutens La Myrrhe
Absolutely stunning!
Before it went all sweet on me…RL Safari.
My favorite aldehyde: Iris Poudre.
Chanel No. 22 mmmmmmm…..
Me too. . . (already said so at the bottom of the aldehyde thread).
In parfum, of course!
I’ve got to go with the edt. The parfum is lovely, but the edt blows me away.
Rive Gauche (pour Femme)
Amouage Gold Women, Van Cleef and Arpels First, and of course, Chanel No 5 and No 22…oh and Ecussion!
With you on First…
First? hmmm, I got a mini of First and it just smelled like sharp dish soap…..I wonder if it had ‘turned’?
Well, Daisy, you’re making me go “hmmm”…mine is a mini, too…of the parfum…it’s intense in it’s way, but I didn’t ever get a dish soap vibe. It’s been a while…now you’re making me want to go back…can’t at the moment, though; I’m slathered in Mandragore! (It heated up around here for a change.)
Because I have no class, I’m commenting on my own post. If anyone else likes aldehydes like I do, try Etats Libre d’Orange’s Vraie Blonde. Soooooo good! It does smell shockingly like ginger ale in the top notes, so if that’s something you’re put off by, by all means avoid this one.
Put off by gingerale? Not me….just ask the bottle of Demeter Gingerale in my frig.
You should try Vraie Blonde then! If I can figure out to make a sample out of a sample I’ll send you some…
My fave aldehydic is No. 5 in extrait. Arpege is nice, too. I have a recently-acquired sample of La Myrrhe, but haven’t tested it yet.
Second Arpege.
SSS Champagne de Bois, Guerlain Liu
Oh yes!!! Rapple has redeemed herself from the “but Daisy, there’s cumin in Epic ” comment.
Champagne de Bois is going to the deserted island with me…
Whew! I’m glad. 😉
yeah, I’m sure you were overcome with remorse. 😉
How could I have forgotten Champagne De Bois?
L’Interdit by Givenchy. It’s sunny and delightful.
😉
=3
Almost a pass for me. But I do love Balmain Ivoire!
Right now- FM Iris Poudre..(maybe Chanel Bois de Iles)
Second them both. And I forgot to add Caleche.
White Linen ( Lauder) L’Ame soeur ( Divine)
Yvresse!
Dead tie: Lancome’s Magie (La Collection) and Chanel No 5 parfum….
Chanel no 22.
Balenciaga Le Dix
I’ll put Lanvin My Sin here too 😉
“Dune” by Dior.
Original Nina By Nina Ricci!!!!!!!
That is one of my favourites ever! So beautiful. I recently found a small bottle of the extrait on e-bay. Better still. Though the EDT is beautiful as well.
Yes, yes, YES! Love Nina ’87!
That and the original Vancleef & Arpels First – my first aldehyde love.
Le Parfum de Therese. The first aldehydic fragrance I ever fell head-over-heels for, and still my favourite. 🙂
[bonks head] Right! Excellent.
CDG 2 (silver bottle)
Rose!
Amouage Lyric Woman
Can I just leave a LIST?
Montale Highness Rose in the uber-expensive catagory
L’Artisan Drole de Rose in the “I still own both my kidneys” catagory
For someone who “really doesn’t care for rose scents”…I’m finding myself w/a rapidly growing list as well! Top slot is a toss-up atm between Lyric and Une Rose Chypree, though I’ve discovered many others.
Sa Majeste La Rose for me, Fracas on other people
I almost had to add another catagory for Une Rose Chypree….the “it’d be wildly expensive except it comes in a criminally tiny bottle” catagory…
Rive Gauche, Yves Rocher Rose Absolue, 100% Love
Sonoma Scent Studio’s Vintage Rose.
Frederick Malle Une Rose, hands down.
right on, H
love the Black Rosette too…
My hands are down too for Une Rose..but, I am also loving Tauer’s Incense Rose
Two hands down for Une Rose.
Pretending there’s one more hand left for Tauer Une Rose Chypree, YR Rose Absolue, Gres Cabaret, Montale Black Aoud, Rosine Ecume de Rose. . . .
Wow, I guess I really do love rose frags!
Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau!
If I changed my gravatar I could also leave a vote for JHaG Citizen Queen and FM Lipstick Rose…..but I’m far too lazy to mess with gravatars…
I like the JHaG, but have a hard time getting over the fact that it opens as a dead ringer for J&J baby shampoo. So much for “dark and dirty” rose, lol!
Citizen Queen sounds nice (someone on POL compared it to Guerlain’s long discontinued Candide Effluve!)….. hint, hint….. :-))
are you hinting at me?? I’ll send you a sample for sure! 🙂
Yeah, that was for you. Thank you!! And I’ve got a couple I need to send to you.
cool! I was thinking that there was something else I was supposed to send you as well…do you remember?
Aren’t all the JHaG fragrances takes on rose?
yeah, that’s their thing: fragrances centered on the rose. But they’re all radically different scents. Have you tried the new Midnight oud? Very Montale-ish.
No, I’ve only sniffed the first three, which I think are quite clever (albeit a lwee bit too girly for my taste).
I’m not a rose lover at all, so I’m reading this thread with interested, edcuating myself.
The only rose scents I truly love are face mists/toners from India and Mexico… but I doubt I’d enjoy such fresh, watery rose notes in perfumes.
Rose d’Amour (Rosine)
Montale Aoud Queen Roses and Ta’if Rose, Annick Goutal Rose Absolue, and Amouage Homage
Second Ta’if, and Un Zeste de Rose of Rosine.
All the Juliet Has a Gun scents–I’m not a big rose lover, but they are good. Montale Louban is absolutely lovely, as well, IMHO.
STELLAAAAA. [I was channeling Stanley Kowalski, it’s something I must do when I say the name Stella.]
LOL!! 🙂
ROTFL!! :-))
LOL I used to do that too!
So I’m not the only goofball around here then? 😉
Clearly you are not. 😉
I used to know a bartender named Stella, and one time I had to call her at her very noisy East Village bar — there I was on the street, screaming into my phone to ask for “STELLAAAAA!”
Of course, we’d expect no less… I thought everyone did that!
When J. read your comment she said “you and dad do that, I thought you guys were just being weird….does everyone do that?”
I said “yes, everyone does that.” Which led to a movie plot summary.
Prima Ballerina, Strange Invisible Perfumes.
Oh, no… I’ve got quite the list of “favorite rose scents”… so here are the cream of the crop:
Caron Parfum Sacre, Amouage Lyric Woman, OJ Ta’if, JHaG Citizen Queen, PdR Rose d’Ete, AG Petite Cherie.
I KNOW I’m leaving something I love out…
Oh, yes: Tocade, Une Rose Chypre, and YSL Paris.
Most of what you said…Rose Chypree…Bulgari Rose Essentiale…BBW Sandalwood Rose (that really was nice, RIP)…
PdR Twill Rose and Poussiere … SIP Black Rosette… I know I’m forgetting something…but having fun!
Sandalwood Rose is gone? Pity – glad I still have some lotion, then.
Yup, it’s gone…as is my lotion, which I finally accepted is empty just the other day…(she said, approaching your doorstep… 😉 )
Montale Black Aoud
And Aoud Roses Petals.
My two favourite roses:
Paris, Yves Saint Laurent. ( the original version)
Nahéma, Guerlain
Another less typical rose that I also really like: Paestum Rose ( Eau d’Italie)
Le Labo Rose, Paestum Rose, and Sublime Balkis.
I love the LeLabo Rose!
And so many others – too many to list, really.
This one is agony ….. No 1 will always be Nahema… but there are a few close on her heels!
Ok, can’t help myself: No 2, dead tie between Cartier So Pretty and Sonoma Scent Studio Rose Musc ….
Yosh Sottile 1.61
Rose = “Joy”, all the way :).
“Bois des Paradais” by DelRae is a fine runner-up, though.
oh yum! I love the creamy, wood puddingy goodness of Bois de Paradis….only a teeny tiny bit of rose on me.
Crabtree and Evelyn Evelyn!!!!!!!! SHEER MAGIC! Rose, Watermelon, Peach, Hyacinth…. SUBLIME!
Jo Malone Red Roses…..
YSL Paris… YE GODS!
HA! I love it….the expression of devotion thru the use of capitals and punctuation. ( my people!) 🙂
Caron’s Parfum Sacre holds one of the rare roses that feel at home on my skin
Montale Highness Rose extrait. Swoonsville.
No kidding….it is tres amazing stuff….I just called Montale in Paris to check on price—hold on to your hat:
50ml –$426.20 and 100ml/$710.34
oh, but shipping is free 🙂 LOL
However, for a lovely blast of big true rose soliflore you can once again get Arabian Rose from DSH—- I emailed her and she just put it back on the site today!! it is very nearly as nice as Highness Rose and lasts longer. Not to mention quite reasonable in price.
I’m super late on the rose – but it’s my favorite note – did anyone mention AG’s Ce Soir ou Jamais? Also SSS’s recent reissue of Cameo is glorious!
peach!
Guerlain’s Mitsuoko
Yes 😉
Keiko Mecheri Peau de Peche.
MITSOUKO!!! ahh, Mitsy dear, she’s luverly.
Mitsouko is the only peach fragrance I know & love, but… I don’t smell the peach! I know other folk say it’s ALL peach, but… I don’t smell the peach! So I wonder what’s up with that?
I’m right there with you. I’ve smelled it in every current concentration and I don’t smell anything even close to peach.
Glad I’m not the only one. My friend says he can smell it though.
I’ve never really smelled peach either but have always assumed that the warmth in the fragrance is there because of the peach, and that we would sure notice it if it was not there. I’m waerinbg Mitsouko today.
Lucky you! 😉
Byredo Pulp
Vintage Dolce Vita.
Peche Cardinal by Parfums MDCI, and of course Mitsouko
I second the Peche Carindal…it’s divine!!!
Chant d’Aromes…at least, I smell peach in there somewhere. And on the low-budget end, I really do miss the Body Shop’s Fuzzy Peach. (I think that’s what it was called–it’s been discontinued forever.)
Fourple the Mitsouko, but also Guerlain’s Nahema (which could easily also go in the rose category)
(FOURPLE lolol that’s my new favorite word)
😉
you’re a trend setter! cool.
Well, that would be the first trend I’VE ever set! LOL!
Guerlain Chant d’Aromes
Serge Lutens Daim Blond. Sexy as ever!
Din-Dan and Sun, Moon, Stars
Jil Sander No.4!
ELDO Vraie Blonde is all peach to me – fizzy champagne peach.
Robert Piguet’s Visa. Delicious — white peach, pear, violet leaves, bergamot, yellow mandarin, ylang, rose, immortelle, orange flower absolute, patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, moss, vanilla bean.
Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey. I don’t get much honey from it, but I do get a big, slightly tart-ish cross between a peach and nectarine.
Eclat d’Arpege (Re: peach!)
Leather.
Chanel’s Cuir de Russie
Tested that yesterday, and got quite a bit of Barnyard/Raw Uncured Cowhide in the beginning: Scary.
Classic, ST!
31 Rue Cambon —really! it smells like floral leather to me!!
oh, and coincidentally…I’m currently wearing a dab of Parfum d’Empire Cuir Ottoman… smells like a brand new saddle! very nice….although my 17 yr old said “yuck” and scurried out of the room!
Debating whether to buy a full bottle of this…but can’t seem to justify that $200 price tag. But I LOVE this one…
Karin, which one? Rue Cambon or Cuir Ottoman?
Rue Cambon!
It is definitely gorgeous. Maybe a decant, Karin?
Dzing!
Love, love, love, Dzing!!!!
Dzing! of course 😛
Cuir Ottoman and Cuir Mauresque.
Second Cuir Ottoman.
Parfumerie Generale L’Oiseau de Nuit is an unusual and beautiful fragrance with a leather base.
Ditto PG’s Cuir Venenum and Cuir Iris. Pierre’s got a way with cowhide. 🙂
I’ll say. I always enjoy when I find it underneath. His scents. When I find it underneath his scents.
Knize Ten (since the Chanel is taken).
Agree with Chanel Cuir de Russie and adding Etro Gomma, which smells like CdR’s little sister to me.
Daim Blonde, SL.
Seconded!
Third the SL Daim Blonde, GREAT suede note. Especially in cool dry weather.
Jar Ferme Tes Yeux- though I ‘ve smelt it only once..Otherwise I am not a huge fan of leather- unless smothered with spices..Ooh- but I did like SL Daim Blond
Bvlgari Black; although it smells more of rubber and vanilla to me. Love it anyway.
Another great leather: Cuir Lancôme
Kelley Caleche, and I just smelled a Tom Ford leather that was faaaaabulous – at least on paper.
Parfumerie Generale L’Ombre Fauve.
Robert Piguet’s Bandit
Calvin Klein: Obsession Night
(The one for men)
Tabac Blond
Kelly Caleche and Cuir d’Iris.
Sonoma Scent Studio Tabac Aurea
Parfumerie Generale Cuir d’Iris. I swoon over this scent.
Kelly Caleche, Habanita, Cabotine
Black Tourmaline (could also be filed under cumin and smoke — yum).
Montale’s Aoud Cuir d’Arabie, or better still, Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier’s Ambre Dore.
I love SL Daim Blond as well, and Cuir de Lancome for an even softer suede.
CUIR OTTOMAN!!
Nobody’s mentioned Mme. Cellier’s spectacularly leatheresque Jolie Madame for Balmain???????????????
I noticed that, but thought I was talking too much. (She said.) I do like Jolie Madame, too…
And what’s this? Nobody’s mentioned Tauer’s Lonestar Memories??? C’mon, peeps: this one’s a whole darn saddle-and-chaps of a leather!!!!
Another good leather is Ava Luxe’s Film Noir–with leather, hemlock, spruce and lavender, but to me, it’s heavenly… :~)
Estee Lauder Azuree.
L’Artisan Dzongkha
Patchouli or Musk
Montale Patchouli Leaves!
Patchouli: Opium – Yves Saint Laurent
Musk: CB Musk – CB I Hate Perfume
Borneo 1834 mmmmmmm…..
Oooh…I really want to try this one…
Me too, I ordered a sample from TPC and can’t wait to sniff it!! I’ll probably love it and have yet another expensive perfume on my wish list, ahhhhh!
I’ve tried it! It reminds me of Coromandel without that horrible white chocolate that lingers forever in the Coromandel dry down. Love it!
I haven’t tried Borneo, have that on my must try list.
Neil Morris Dark Earth!
SL Clair de Musc —-nice alone but great for layering!
Le Labo Patchouli 24
and
Musc Koublai Khan
LOVE Le Labo Patchouli 24 and adding Etro Shaal Nur. I still want to try Montale Patchouli Leaves and Etro Patchouli.
FM Musc Ravageur (mmmmm!) or Les Neriades Musk Samarcande.
Patchouli: Chanel Coromandel… almost edible, love it!!
Second Coromandel!
OOh! I’ve heard about this one, have to give it a try for sure! I think this is carried in the boutiques only, right??
ST: Yes as far as full bottles, but The Perfumed Court and Posh Peasant all carry samples and small decants. Decants are also available fairly readily on scentsplits.wikidot.com. (no affiliation with any of these)
reminiscense elixir
one of the very few patch scents that don’t make me dive for cover!
L’Artisan Voleur de Roses – makes the patch even darker!
For patch, Gres Cabaret. Which is not really heavy on the patchouli, but that would be, um, my point.
LOL! Cabaret is wonderful, isn’t it?
Histories de Parfums Noir Patchouli
Il Profumo Patchouli Noir!
Patchouli is one of my favorite notes. As a dominant note I love Mazzolari Patchouli and Bois 1920 Real Patchouli. More blended patchouli scents I love are Paestum Rose, Chypre Fatale, and Sublime Balkiss.
Oops! Forgot the musks. Musc Ravageur of course, but KM Loukhoum is wonderful.
Andy Tauer’s Le Maroc pour Elle – gorgeous!
Bond No. 9 Chinatown
For Patchouli… of course it’s GOTTA BE AngelMen! NO DOUBT!
I’ll throw my vote in for Muscs Koublai Khan for the best, dirtiest, most golriously sexual musk ever! But I must also give a close second to my beloved Kouros, which is a little more “take it out in public” than the MKK. Still, musky 🙂
Jared, the last time I work MKK someone actually looked around and said, “who stepped in s**t?”. Seriously. I positively beamed, but kept my mouth shut. Gotta love it. 🙂
HA! I officially snorted coffee through my nose on that one!
I LOVE SL’s MKK–it does have that very dirty musky note, it lasts forever on skin.
Lasts forever is right. Imagine if you found the dreaded s**t note in it and tried in vain to scour it off? Now THAT’S what they call a capital-S Scrubber 🙂
On the patchouli front, PG’s Intrigant Patchouli! LOVE!
Musc Bleu
Patchouli: SL Borneo 1834, of course, but also Santa Maria Novella’s Patchouli, or even Reminiscence’s take on the note.
Musk: SL Musc Koublai Khan
OOPS! Sorry, me again: forgot a favourite Patchouli (containing) fragrance: George Sand c/o Maitre Parfumeur.
Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon, Ralph Lauren Notorious
Lemon!
My first summer fragrance ever was Eau D’Hadrien EDT and I still (I’ve really searched) found nothing so refreshing and balanced.
B Never too Bust to Be Beautiful B Scent
Oops, that should be “busy” not “bust.” :-/
LOL, Bust would be so excellent in a perfume name 😉
Never too Busty to B Beautiful. That’s my motto.
Testing today and loving: Creative Universe, Element of Surprise.
Stephanie de Saint-Aignan’s Li Altarella has a lovely lemon note. Great game, Robin – it’s fun to see all the answers!
Um, I meant Li Altarelli.
PdN Cedrat Intense—-this packs a citrusy whallop that makes your eyes pop open wide….good stuff.
Eau de Guerlain
Carthusia Meditteraneo and Aqua di Parma.
After trying for an entire year, I *finally* got a sample of the Mediterraneo tonight. Put it on, had my 13 yo sniff it, and she said “it smells like cleaning stuff, you know…like Lysol”. Though, to be fair, she said it as though that weren’t really a bad thing…
Back to the Guerlains with this one – Philtre d’Amour. This is one of the few scents of Guerlain’s where I prefer the edp to the older edt, which smelled a little too much like lemon candy. Much more nicely balanced in the newer edp. This is a beautiful scent that sadly eats my skin! :-((
Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom
Lostmarch Din Dan
Tie: Eau d’Hadrien and Love’s Fresh Lemon…
Lemon: “Spring Flower” by Creed.
L’eau De Guerlain! Or Hesperides by L’Artisan!
Discontinued, dirt-cheap, and smells like a slice of Meyer lemon meringue pie, Italian-style: the eponymous MaxMara.
For lemon, how about CdG’s Series 8 Energy-Lemon? Or Heely’s Verveine?
Forgot La Perla Eclix for a creamy lemon.
L’Artisan L’Eau de L’Artisan
Tobacco!
Tabac Blond mmmmmmm……
I second Tabac Blond. Thanks again, SF, for sharing a sample with me!
But of course! 🙂
Bois d’Ombrie
Bell Antonio
Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille…..which is tops in the vanilla catagory as well…but I get a lot of drying tobacco leaves in this and it’s just wonderful….an HG for sure.
Second this! *waves to Daisy*
Hi Rapple!! pardon me while I briefly bow down at my SDV alter…
I smelled the Tom Ford Tobacco Vanilla the other day and it wasn’t what I wanted at all. So now I don’t know what tobacco scents I like.
Oh, tobacco…HARD…guess…SL Chergui. NO, PG Bois Blond. LZ Tobacco and Tulle is pretty darn cool. (Ooh! A rhyme! 😉 )
Yes, Chergui!
Fifi Chachnil is fun tobacco.
second! Love Fifi !!!
I love Fifi too, but can’t smell the tobacco.
Sonoma Scent Studio Tabac Aurea!!!
Oh, right! Forgot about that one – lovely.
1740 by Histoire de parfums
Equipage. (That is tobacco in there, right???)
Fumerie Turque by the Great Serge, next to Chergui on my shelf
Fumerie Turque!
Chergui!
Yes!
Yes!
Robin, this is the funnest Lazy Thursday poll ever!
It would appear that many people agree with you 🙂
Let’s see if we can break 1500, R.
LOL!
ELdO Jasmin et Cigarette! And seconding SDV and Tabac Aurea.
Hard to choosebetween iris and osmanthus, but OK:
IRIS
Annick Goutal Heure Exquise
Is iris the prominent note on that? I need to smell it again…
Yes, it is! Iris paired with rose. It’s a softer, more romantic Chanel No. 19.
Hmm. No. 19 parfum is my top fave. But I’ll try AG’s version. I do have a soft side…sometimes.
Here’s more love for one of my few HG’s….Heure Exquise !!!
Iris Silver Mist, Serge Lutens
well, that’s no surprise! lol
Did I read somewhere that Iris Silver Mist is no longer going to be exclusive to europe? or was I dreaming? I did see that some decants are available at scentwiki…
The Different Company Bois d’Iris!
OO yes, I forgot Bois D’Iris which I love for daytime!
Oh, yes please! But also MPG Iris Bleu Gris.
Hermes Hiris….mixed 50/50 with Prada Infusion d’Iris !!
Hiris is a bit blatant (though I wear it)…and the Prada, I dunno, I like the initial sniff but the drydown is so boring
uh-huh, that is why I mix them—it brings out the best of both.
Hummm, what a great idea!!! I haven’t bought any of these because I found the Hiris a bit too waxy and the Prada a gone-with-the-wind kind of perfume. Will try your concoction Daisy!
Dangerous Daisy, Super Enabler : hard at work…
LOVE all of the above!!!
Second that… 🙂
Indeed, too many to choose!
Chanel 28 La Pausa.
Love La Plausa….wish it lasted longer. Too much $$$ for 20 minutes of ahhh.
My HG scent – Guerlain Vol de Nuit. Also really enjoying OJ Orris Noir.
Ohmigosh, I’m ashamed of myself for forgetting Vol de Nuit! This my soft , comforting Iris.
Did you ever succumb to one of those vintage bottles?
Chanel No. 19 for iris.
Iris Nobile
Love Hiris, am very curious about ISM. Love 19 and Heure Exquise ( one of the best Goutals in my humble opinion.)
Another great Iris is L’Homme de Coeur by Divine.
Iris is a “problem” for me – lol – I have smelled many and the jury is still out on all of them. Next up, the Yves Rocher, which seems promising.
Glad I’m not the only one with an “iris problem.” 🙂 It just smells like soap on me, and not in a good way.
I’m liking the Yves Rocher today – not soapy, not too rooty (which I like but it’s sometimes too too) and a bit more florally than some.
Iris Taizo by Parfumerie Generale & L’Artisan Iris Pallida.
Either Hiris By Hermes (EXQUISITE!!!!!!!) Or Ferre By Ferre (the Newest One) for both Women and Men!
I’ve scanned the list twice. Nobody’s mentioned FM Iris Poudre??
Meanwhile, my fave Iris: Andy Tauer’s Orris. I only have a precious decant, and I take off the cap and wave it under my nose and I’m in iris butter HEAVEN.
I second the earthy Bois d’Iris.
Drat! I had successfully forgotten about the Tauer Orris, of which I have only heard…that sound you hear is me muttering, and incantation which I hope results in me somehow getting a whiff of it someday…
Vanilla
Tocaaaade
Shalimar
Second!
Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille …..and I don’t care what the Guide says about it! so neh!
I agree! No contest here.
Also, you have to remember that the Guide gave 5 stars to Tommy Girl. ‘Nuff said!
yeah! what Rapple said!
Hypnotic Poison
Oh I luuurve HP! And since no one’s mentioned almonds yet I’ll second it here.
Vanille Tonka.
Oh, gosh… Tocade? Shalimar Light? Emeraude?
Vanilla Grapefruit, from Vanilla Labs. The mixture is simple and divine, it lets me wear vanilla during summer.
Vanille Galante
Um, any and all? 🙂
Absolutely! Vanilla calls my name that’s for sure! Hardly a one that I don’t like…..unless someone were to ruin it by adding CUMIN…but I think there might be a rule against that…..
PdN Sacrebleue
OHMIGAWD! VANILLA!!!!!!!! WOW! ummmmm…… Sublime By Jean Patou!
Vanilla: where to start? Comptoir Sud Pacifique seems like a good place, with several variations on the theme.
But, wait a minute: why not just turn to Serge again? Indeed: Un Bois Vanille it must be.
Would also second Spiritueuse Double Vanille for the OTT appeal.
Montale Intense Tiaré
SL un bois vanille
From Kevin’s post yesterday…
TEA
Osmanthe Yunnan.
I second Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan.
3rd..
Bulgari Black…I get such a great smoked tea note on my skin with it
My conspicuous absence here is due to the fact that I can’t possibly choose a favorite tea. Maybe if you narrowed it down to black, or green, or white, or jasmine…I could maybe do one of each. 😀
AG Mandragore
CB I Hate Perfume’s Russian Caravan Tea or Bvlgari’s The Rouge. I love Demeter’s Earl Grey which smells exactly like Earl Grey, but lasts … oh …. 15 seconds.
Carthusia Mediterraneo
Eau Rare Matale and CdG Leaves: Tea.
Hands Down… Bvlgari Au the Blanc! No Comparisons Anywhere if you ask me!
Love the TB!!! (though it feels more like the taste of green ta, doesn’t it?)
Ah, and also thé pour une été….
I keenly second Bulgary Black, but I also love the Lapsang Souchong in L’artisan’s Tea for Two.
Hands down: Norma Kamali’s The (Tea) parfum.
Love the burst of greens, tangy yuzu, the bergamot of Earl Grey, an almost vetiver-like earthiness — and, more than anything, the incredibly freshly-brewed silver-tip jasmine tea note running through it from beginning to end. Slurp!
Bvlgari Omnia
Osmanthus, rose, ginger flower, musk, cederwood, bergamont….
hum………..so hard to choose
osmanthus then~
Parfums D’Empire’s Osmanthus Interdite. It took a while for this to achieve #1 status because Osmanthus Yunnan already had me under its spell. In the end I preferred the flower without the tea.
I’d go with Osmanthus Interdite too, but I do get a light tea note in it.
Thirding Osmanthus Interdite. So lovely.
I luv Osmanthus Yunnan as well! But it’s tad bit too pricy for me…got a sample from Hermes, tho EDT, the smell is suprisingly long lasting! Guess I’ve fallen under the charm of Mr. Ellena and his daughter!
Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan. Again (it’s already been mentioned for tea)
The Different Company Osmanthus, since I put Osmanthe Yunnan under “Tea”. 🙂
Montale Velvet Flowers
One of my very favourite floral notes, Alexandrakwan. Thanks!
What everyone else said, plus a plug for the underloved SL Nuit de Cellophane. Also — you gotta love ’em sweet for this one — Shanghai edp, which you can probably scour for online. Chinese osmanthus that is all peach and leather heaven.
Osmanthus on the cheap: Gap Velvet Bloom.
My luxury, HG osmanthus: Jean Patou 1000. Whoah. Osmanthus is only the beginning with this beauty.
Violet…
OMG no question: SL’s Bois de Violette! Though I just tried Caron’s Aimez-Moi and it’s a sheerer (cheaper) version I quite like for summer.
Violetta di Parma
Penhaligon’s Violetta. Love, love, love. Also- Berdoues. 😉
Yes, Berdoues Violettes de Toulouse – gorgeous violet solifleur
Keiko Mecheri’s Genie des Bois, Eau de Cartier, or Malle Dans Tes Bras. Violets are good!
second Dans Tes Bras, I had it on today!
Bunny, my gravatar wants to mate with your gravatar
um…..I think that’s a different blog….
bow chicka wow wow…. 😉
Guerlain’s Insolence EDP
SSS Lieu de Reves, SSS Wood Violet, SSS Viole de Violette, Montale Louban, Montale Aoud Shiny, SL Bois de Violette, Guerlain Insolence edp, and I am sure there are more I cannot remember right now.
Just got these SSS samples yesterday – can’t wait to try them!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Wood Violet and I didn’t think I would at all!
YEAH!! SSS Voile de Violette is a great soliflore.. and then Lieu de Reves for something more blended and interesting. Ok, then Apres L’Ondee… 😉
Hmm, Verte Violette
I second Bois de Violette and would cite, in a different register, Angel Violette.
Penhaligon’s Violetta, or Caron Aimez-Moi.
Apres l’ondee …
Second that.
Third.
So many violets, so little time! Add my vote for Guerlain Quand Vient la Pluie, all sweet, creamy, almond-y heliotrope and violet.
Add another vote for Dominique Ropion’s masterpiece for FM, Une Fleur de Cassie. Violet isn’t the featured floral note, but it is one of the most gorgeous minor violet notes ever put in a bottle. (I think, anyway.) 🙂
CdG Stephen Jones and FM Dans du Bras
OJ Woman is nearly all candied violet on me… yum.
Oh yes, Boojum. How could I have forgotten that masterpiece?!
CdG Stephen Jones, Love in Black and especally The Unicorn Spell which is utterly magical ….I think I have a “violette” thing!!!
La Violette de Goutal
L’Heure Bleue. (Which, sadly, while lovely on others, just smells like Coty Airspun face powder on me–no violet! Waaah!)
I need to pay more attention to my l’Heure Bleue. Anise? Violet? I haven’t noticed either of those. I think I just get either overwhelmed by beauty or medicine cabinet, depending on the day.
HdP Blanc Violette….not too sharp, not too much wet soil….just right.
I love the Borsari Violetta di Parma, and also Ava Luxe’s Midnight Violet.
Discontinued but gorgeous…. Fresh’s Index Violet Moss…. Makes me think of my sister! 🙂
Soivohle Violets and Rainwater
INCENSE
Comme des Garcons Zagorsk!!!
Olivier Durbano Rock Crystal
I also love Olivier Durbano Jade!!
L’Artisan Dzongkha!!!
Incense Yum!
Chanel No 22, Etro Shaal Nur, Montale Louban, Amouage Jubilation XXV and 25, Amouage Homage, Amouage Lyric (both), Amouage Gold (both), Montale Black Aoud, Montale White Aoud, CdG Avignon…
You didn’t seriously expect me to limit myself to one scent per category, did you Robin?
Uh, no 🙂
Tie between Avignon and Jaisalmer.
L’Artisan Timbuktu.
Love Timbuktu, and think it just edges out Dzongkha for me.
I just ordered a sample of Dzongkha – can’t wait to try it.
I’m just the opposite, but I love them both. Very much!!!
H, I *would* be the opposite, except I’m one of those on whom Dzongkha goes all crazy celery. I still love it, but find it a bit less wearable for that. On paper…Dzongkha is a beauty for sure.
CdG Avignon and Andy Tauer L’air du Desert Marocain. (Which I’m sure I spelled wrong.)
Ditto! I’ll add Tauer’s Incense Extreme and Incense Rose as well as Profumum Alba for good measure.
Forgot to include Bois d’Encens — as God is my witness, BdE, one day I shall find you at TJ Maxx!
I second your pick of Tauer’s fragrance, miss kitty, which btw you spelt perfectly!
TDC Parfum des Sens de Bois.
Oh yes, that’s another beauty!
TDC Sublime Balkiss and Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil!
L’artisan Passage d’enfer…
I second Passage d’Enfer!
Me too!
Aedes de Venustas. I’ve just tried a sample and found the incense SO strong that I don’t think I could pull it off anywhere. Well, good, one less for the wish list.
YSL Nu.
Gak – for the incense challenged: Amouage XXV and Sonoma Scent Studio Champagne de Bois or Encens Tranquille…. Blended incense: Amouage Lyric for Women.
any and all! just pour the incense over my head and let me bask!
for some reason I imagined you in an shower of incense sticks lol
that could work……until I get to the rolling around in it part…don’t want to poke an eye out on a stick of incense.
Parfum Sacre.
Easy As Pie…. The One, The Only, The Incomparable… OPIUM!
There are some many incense fragrances I like, and many have already been cited, except perhaps “Encens Flamboyant” from Goutal’s Les Orientalistes, which I love either solo or layered with the others.
Incense is one of my all-time favourite notes, and I’m always looking for more, so thanks so much for the mention.
Two of the most complex, feminine (to this girl’s nose, anyway) and luxurious:
Andy Warhol Silver Factory.
Annick Goutal Myrrhe Ardente.
P.S. It straddles the chypre and incense families, but for one of the most beautiful treatments of frankincense and myrrh I have ever encountered, it’s Amouage Jubilation 25. As NST’s Angela has observed, this isn’t exactly something a fragrance rookie is going to “get” straight off the bat, but for anyone who’s got both feet planted firmly in serious fragrance soil, this one will knock your Crocs off. It is one of the few fragrances in the $300-plus category that is worth the investment.
The lovely and divine Daisy sent me a sample of this (thank you Amouage for including cumin or cedar or whatever it is that Daisy thinks stinks!) and I totally agree. It was strongly reminiscent of vintage Femme (not quite as dark) to me.
Lucky you!
Duh! How could we forget the sultry, smoky Guerlain Bois D’Armenie, you guys????
Vetiver?
Dzongkha by L’Artisan.
Vetiver Tonka is one of the greats, IMO. And the only scent my husband likes on me in the car – I’m forbidden to wear anything else in a tight environment.
Funny story.
I was just driving a friend to the airport early early in the morning and I was still sporting, very strongly, Shalimar parfum. She opened the windows. >….<;
I got a spray of that on a card and it made me realize my love for Shalimar is strictly fictional.
Mom? Is that you? 😀 Sorry…my poor mother can’t win w/my dad…he even complains about her unscented deodorant.
second on the Vetiver Tonka…..love it…..makes the CEO sneeze….no Vetiver Tonka for Daisy…. 🙁
ENCRE NOIRE <3
I have to second Encre Noir here…but I still haven’t smelled Sycomore yet! That will be the true test. I think the worst might go to Route du Vetiver. Yikes.
Ha, I’ve been ~told~ about Sycomore as well. But I’m in no rush to fall in love with an Exclusif! I’ll tackle them all at once someday. 😉
Sycomore…
My current favorite vetiver is Annick Goutal.
Vetiver Bourbon by Miller Harris. Excellent but $$$.
I am getting a lot of vetiver from my sample of Tom Ford Oud Wood…reminds me of Sycomore, but not quite as smoky. I haven’t tried the Annick Goutal Vetiver yet.
An odd one, but a great one, Vetiver by Goutal!
CdG Vettiveru
Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire
Guerlain Vetiver Pour Elle, my first real and true Holy Grail revelatory scent.
Le Labo Vetiver + whatever number it is
There are so many!!!
I love the masculine Guerlain Vetiver too.
Bath and Body Works Black Amethyst. (Well, no one said it had to be GOOD vetiver!)
Chanel No 19 !!!
Arpege!
Vetyver being one of my favourite notes, the list would go on, from Lutens to Goutal via MPG and others still.
But one stands out: Turtle Vetiver c/o Les Nez. It’s the raw deal.
Sycomore and vetiver Tonka: Tie!!!
Andy Tauer’s Vetiver Dance – Hmmmm….
and Mmmmmm again. Not for vetiver rookies (for that, I’d go directly to Sycomore; not that it’s a dumbed-down vetiver, but just that it’s such an irresistible one). Vetiver Dance is like vetiver roots plus the soil that clings to them, all dark vetiver from Java and cistus labdanum. Not for the faint of heart, but for vetiver addicts, it’s mainlining.
Oh, yes, that one is sublime – both it and the Malle are up there in my “too rich and fab to be believed” vetiver category.
Hermes Eau de Merveilles
Here’s a curve ball for you guys.
Red pepper!
Man, this is fun! =D
Poivre Samarcande…until it gets to the funky sweat note. Then it’s time for scrubbing bubbles.
Caron Poivre. Oh, yum!
2nd!!! Love LOVE LOVE this
I guess it’s best to try the parfum version, huh?
Man, should’ve collected keys. They’re cheaper and last forever.
Montale’s Red Oud!
This does have to stay perfume, right? Because Yves Rocher makes a liquid hand soap that smells uncannily like sweet red bell pepper…
I’m not usually a fan of scented household products but that sounds too good to pass up. What’s it called?
It’s in the Les Plaisirs line…called “Poivron” (aka Red Pepper)…
Chanel Coco…
Chanel Coco
FIG [this is fun]
Oooh – Philosykos !
Mmm, Un Jardin en Méditerranée by Hermes. Keep putting off buying a bottle of this.
UJeM is awful on my skin…goes straight to hamster cage cedar very quickly…but oh was it heavenly where I accidentally spritzed it on a leather watch strap. Mmmmm.
double oooh! Philosykos!!! but Heeley’s fig is verra nice too.
L’Artisan Premier Figuier (tie with Philosykos).
Love PF.
seconding the Heeley Figuer…much drier and longer lasting.
Heeley Figuier!
Hmmm – gots to try that Heeley Figuier. Never heard of that – thanks peeps.
It’s lovely stuff, really is…..just expensive and not that available. Philosykos can be had for nearly half the price if you shop around…….but if anyone decides to split up a bottle of Heeley Figiuer….I want in on it!
I agree, it’s way overpriced now. If you can get a split or a used bottle off BN or something, that’s a way better deal. Or else get Philosykos — they’re very close.
Ojeda–yup, my conclusion as well. And I love the philosykos so it was no hardship to choose it!
Good to know, Daisy – thanks.
L’Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme
Yes!
Also like Pacifica Mediterranean Fig
Second the Pacifica.
Also two from Ava Luxe: Fig Leaf (very green) and Bois de Figue (ripe with lots of wood).
that’s it! my resolve has melted away like sugar in water….got to go to Ava Luxe and shop like a shark in a feeding frenzy.
Byredo’s Pulp is like nuclear fig on me. (And I mean that in a good way.)
Byredo Pulp.
Speaking of fig, in the new issue of Allure, there is a quick little interview with Ellen DeGeneres. One of the questions they ask is “what is your favorite scent?” and she answered fig, saying “I wear fig perfume. And when I run out, I just stuff a fig newton in my bra.” 🙂
Love her. 🙂
Fico di Amalfi
I knew I was forgetting one I liked!
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Strangler Fig…voluptuous and green!!
For me, it’s Bath and Body Works Brown Sugar and Fig. Low apparently, I know. But it’s really one of their most well-done Eau De Toilettes, IMO.
Fig tea
i totally agree…and it’s a total dupe for Ralph Hot….both so yummy to me…
i meant the bath and body works fig and brown sugar…dupe for ralph hot…sorry for edit…
OH GOOD LORD! MY FAVORITE OF FAVORITES OF ALL TIME! My personal No.1 Scent…. Jo Malone Wild Fig And Cassis! 🙂 Pure Heaven in a Bottle!
Ooh, Anthousa Fig&Vetiver! Yum.
Bois de Paradis, parfums Del Rae:
this is heaven – and full of ripe figs!!!
Saving the best fig for last: Parfumerie Generale’s Jardins de Kerylos. The fruit of the fig tree, the green leaves, the bark (actually sycamore, because it smells better) — the whole darn garden!
Hay!
PdN Vie de Chateau
…is for horses!
Ok, now that everyone knows I’m a dork…
Of all the weird things, there is a hay note in Brandy. I don’t smell it, but they swear it’s in there.
D’zing.
ooh Fleur de Narcisse (ha! I do like *one* L’Artisan after all)
This is the BEST game.
PdN Le Temps d’une Fete smells like hay to me. Other things too 🙂
Opus Oils Cowboy
I would say AT’s Lonestar Memories but something in that makes it smell like old gum scraped off a hot sidewalk with some hay attached.
Okay, put my PG Bois Blond here; leave the SL Chergui under tobacco. 🙂
Ok, I’ll put my Chergui here under hay. Mmmmmmm.
LOL. …and as long as I’m yammering again, I’m going to add a Mastenbroek Eau de Polder…hay comfort…
…and another for Chergui. It’s one of the very few SLs that works for me.
Lancome Climat or Sonoma Scent Studio Jour Ensoleille
the first Comme Des Garcons!
Hay is gorgeous in SSS’s Tabac Aurea…
Chocolate
Angel, of course! 🙂
SJP Covet.
Ditto…
I’ll revisit my patchouli comment and say Coromandel. Of course, that’s if white chocolate counts.
Why am I getting hungry?
Bvlgari Omnia has white chocolate too.
Chanel Coromandel
Yes! Coromandel!
…is to eat.
Well, OK. I do like Borneo 1834.
Musc Maori – smells like chocolate orchids
Britney Spears – Fantasy ^_^
Also, Very Irresistible by Givenchy (for men).
Lea Extreme….it’s like swimming in a vat of creamy chocolate….
Oh, I agree! Chocolate isn’t listed, but the Extreme sure makes me think of it. Haven’t decided which Lea I prefer.
Ayala Film Noir
yes, please!
For the nose: Amour de Cacao by CSP
Fleurs de Chocolat by Fresh
Chocolat Amere by Il Profumo
Demeter’s Brownie isn’t bad either…
getting peckish, now!
Ditto-ing Coromandel (also in the patch camp), Borneo 1834, and adding Missoni (the 2006-ish version, not the seventies one) for bitter dark chocolate and orange.
Oh, I so wanted to like Missoni, but it was SO sweet on my skin I just couldn’t do it. I am going to give that sample another go before giving up, though.
Surprisingly, I *did* like that one. Did you ever try Montale’s Chocolate Greedy? If not, zip me an email and I’ll pass it along; maybe that would work better for you.
hmmm, Missoni… equivalent of comfort food for me. like it or not, it’s definitively mouth watering!
No one else took it, so…mimosa.
Une Fleur de Cassie!!!
Utterly.
UFdC has mimosa in it, but to me it’s all about the cassie, which is a different animal. To wit, Wikipedia:
Acaci farnesiana flowers are distilled in the south of France to make an essential oil called Cassie which is used as a basis for aromatherapy and perfume.[12]
A rose by any other name. . .I love the stuff.
Mimosa Pour Moi. And Czech and Speake has a mimosa frag–might just be called Mimosa?? Can’t remember.
Yes, smells like super-fine soap – kinda nice.
Seconding Mimosa Pour Moi
SummerbyKenzo!
Divine’s L’Infante, lovely light floral.
Caron’s Montaigne – I know everyone thinks I’m nuts – but a very rich mimosa undulates out of this one for me.
Champs-Elysee By Guerlain…. I remember first coming across it in Saks together with my sis… she fell for it immediately… so did i… now since it was in her hospital room with her (her BF brought it there to hopefully stimulate something in her) I just can’t smell it anymore without crying, but it is still amazing!
Popcorn! J/K How about… Oakmoss.
Bandit…beautiful, beautiful Bandit…sigh…
I just ordered a sample of that since I hear SO much about Bandit from you guys…will have to see how it goes!
I have to say, as much as I love it, it never smells very good on me. But I keep trying…I’m wearing it right now, as a matter of fact.
Oh gosh, yes. I was leery of Bandit for summer, but it cuts right through the heat and humidity like a switchblade.
Vintage Mitsouko
Mitsy before she was raped!
I haven’t smelled the vintage stuff–what was changed? I love the stuff I have now, although it smells waaayyyyy strongly of clove for the first hour.
There was much more of a beautiful bergamot opening (the opening seemed very different to me in the new one), and there was a fresh, forestry oak moss throughout. I actually liked the newest version okay, but I’d now call it an oriental, not a chypre.
Diorella. Vintage, esp.
Yes on Mitsouko, but also YSL Y.
I second ‘Y’
Vintage Miss Dior-stunning
Jolie Madame
Alpona-one of my favorites
Vintage Chanel 19
OH HELLS YES! MISS DIOR! WOOHOO! what a GEM!
Safari .. total swoon worthy chypre…
Actually, Tommy Hilfiger’s Dreaming reminded me of popcorn. Or buttered popcorn Jelly Bellys. Dx
Actually, smite me where I stand, but Fracas has the same note, only louder.
🙂
Nuit de Noel.
Ivoire De Balmain!
Clear the oakmoss decks, gang! It’s Andy’s Rose Chypree all the way.
P.S. Robin K and Angela S, thanks to your evil influences I have developed a serious oakmoss/chypre infatuation which has cost me vast sums of money and hours and hours and HOURS of cruising online for vintage chypres I can ill afford, even at bargain prices. (I think Angela must always be a step ahead of me in cyberspace. 🙂 )
Hey, there’s popcorn in Miss Dior Cherie.
That’s interesting (!)
Oud!
Montale Aoud Queen Roses, Black Aoud, White Aoud, Louban, Ambre Aoud, Original Aoud…etc, etc.
Amouage Homage…though I wish there was a bit more oud in this one. Amouage Jubilation XXV…
Tough to pick. Might be Montale Aoud Roses Petals. Also really like the Tom Ford Oud Wood & M7. And I know there’s more I’m not thinking of.
Love the Montale Aoud Rose Petals, but I absolutely adore the YSL M7. Great scent, and to me not overtly masculine at all.
The Tom Ford was lovely on paper.
I also like the Le Labo quite a bit.
Still working on the Montales but so far no dice.
Le Labo Rose 31 and Czech & Speake Dark Rose.
Le Labo Oud 27
Tom Ford oud wood!!
More hints for Big City denizens: check out your East Indian/Middle Eastern ‘hood for oudh bargains galore. I now have a collection of 5ml roll-ons from the UAE that blow the doors of my much-pricier Montales. They’re oils (alcohol being verboten in Dubai, et al) and you’ll pay under $5 each. Often they’re hidden at the back of the store behind the pillows and blankets and water pipes. Worth the hunt.
Great idea, thanks! I’ve been meaning to try oud but haven’t had heart to tackle, for example, all those Montale ouds. Time to drive down to the Persian market!
Amber!
Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche, Montale Oud Ambre, Hermes 24 Faubourg and Eau de Merveilles (love the ambregris in this one),
second on the 24 Faubourg. 🙂
Sinfonia di Note Fleur de Santal–this covers both amber and sandalwood–really lovely!
Hermes Ambre Narguile
Second that! One of a very small handful of ambers I can wear. Also, Agent P Strip.
Histoires du Parfum Ambre 114
EL PC Amber Ylang Ylang
Ambre Russe.
Yep! I think I’ll start a “booze” note and put Ambre Russe there, too.
MGP Ambre Precieux, Montale Blue Amber, Stephanie de Saint-Aignan Embruns d’Ambre.
IPdF Ambra del Nepal
AT L’Air du Desert Marocain
Geisha Noire
Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain!
You picked one of my favorite notes!
SSS Ambre Noir — I almost wish it would get cold again, for the pleasure of wearing this.
It’s one of my favourite ambers, too, Annunziata.
Also, Ayala Moriel’s Razala is amber nirvana. She uses real ambergris, which is almost unheard of in non-vintage scents because the cost is so prohibitive. This one ain’t exactly cheap — $95Cdn for 5mls — but my GOD, you are seriously on the beach beside a huge boulder of aged whale barf. Dy-no-mite!
Coco! Coco! COCO!!!!!!!!
My vote goes to Ambre Sultan and Ambre Fétiche. Both great.
Ha! All my favourites for Amber are already here, except:
Ambre Dore and George Sand, both by MPG
Drier:Etro Ambra, Becker.eshaya Golden Amber
Sweeter: M Micallef Note Ambree, Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre
Montale Aoud Queen Roses, Black Aoud, White Aoud, Louban, Ambre Aoud, Original Aoud…etc, etc.
Amouage Homage…though I wish there was a bit more oud in this one. Amouage Jubilation XXV…
Darn, I meant to put this under my oud post. 🙁
Sandalwood!
Chanel Bois Des Iles and Egoiste, Etro Sandalo, Montale Attar
Hear, hear to Bois des Isles. (here, here?)
I love that one so much right now, I want to marry it.
LOL I know the feeling. haha
Serge Lutens Santal de Mysore
I find SL’s treatment of sandalwood, including Santal Blanc, is too heavy-handed – and reminds me far more of pencil shavings than true sandalwood.
I’ve heard others say that as well.
But such yummy pencil shavings!
That’s what I’m sayin! 🙂
Pacifica Sandalwood. So refreshing with a nice citrus top note but really true sandalwood smell. I love it.
I’m glad to see this suggestion, Katich. I still haven’t found my one true sandalwood, and this sounds nice!
Lorenzo Villoresi Sandalo really smelled best compared to Indian sandalwood oil I tested.
Tam Dao is my first favorite (for bedtime only). Then 10 Corso Como. Then Bois Des Iles.
AG Heure Exquise and Chanel No 5 parfum
Heure Exquise is such a beauty in all her stages but that drydown is simply divine.
Sandalwood: “Shalimar”. I’ll also jump on the “Bois des Isles” bandwagon. “Santal Blanc” by SL is a fascinating take on it, since it seems young, non-Mysore sandal is used in it—there’s a grassier-seeming, wet feeling to it.
Again…. No. 5!!!!! Chanel Every Time!
10 corso como!
Tam Dao! (a close second!)
Gotta mention SSS Champagne de Bois again!
Go ahead! It’s a good ‘un!! (And I’m going to confess ask/here in the depths of these comments, that I find a LOT of similarity to Bois des Isles…)
ITA, Scent Self!
So many glorious ones already mentioned, including/especially Bois des Iles. Also, PG’s Cadjmere. Also, DelRae Amoureuse; it’s not sandalwood-centric, but the base is pure creamy sandalwood that goes on and on till the next morning, easy.
Kenzo Amour Indian Holi
Anise! (I finally got my new bottle of Kenzo Air today 🙂 )
I am falling in love with my sample of Histoire de Parfum’s 1726, which is lavender/anise. Someone thoughtfully included the sample on a trade – I never would have discovered it otherwise.
Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Anisia Bella
The classic L’Heure Bleue.
♥
Hermes Brin de Reglisse
so right Robin. I use it every night. sometimes add a swipe of Sa Majeste La Rose. i think rose & lavender with a touch of anise is the bomb.
Hey, I’ll have to try that!
Etro Anice
Apres L’Ondee
Omnia’s Onice.
Caron Aimez-Moi
Iris Nobile!
Lolita Lempicka!
Ooh I forgot about Kenzo Jungle L’elephant!
Sandalwood? I can’t find a good one except maybe Donna Karan’s Chaos.
Diptyque’s Tam Dao – I love it on my hubby who tried it after a suggestion from this wonderful group 🙂
I think it would be equally wonderful on a man or woman.
There’s already a sandalwood list above 🙂
Hard to keep track here…
Orange Blossom!
Bal A Versailles. [I almost couldn’t decide whether to put that here or over @ sandalwood.]
I almost picked that one up at Nordstrom Rack the other day. Is it good? Should I be kicking myself for not buying it?
Oh indeed. Go back and see if it’s still there! 😉 I have loved it for years.
Alright, thanks for the tip!! 🙂
Miss Kiity V – I didn’t have time to elaborate last night , and i wanted to give you some of my feelings about Bal a Versailles. It’s what I think of as ‘old school’. The florals are somewhat indolic and wonderfully complemented by woody notes. To me it’s velvety, warm and not subtle. I’m not very good with expressing my impressions of fragrance – so I hope that helps. Let me know if you do go back for it and what you think of it!
Miss Kitty:
If you were asking about Bal a Versailles (hard to tell at this point! LOL!) if you email me your address, I’ll be glad to send you a sample of the parfum.
rappleyea11@yahoo.com
Annick Goutal Neroli
Seconding the Goutal, really lovely, light and refreshing.
Le Labo
l’Artisan
Serge Lutens
All of these are some variation on fleur d’oranger and all lovely
Seconding L’Artisan. So lovely!
Omg, love Orange Blossoms.
Fleur Du Male by JPG.
Lorenzo Villoresi Dilmun
Le Labo Fleur d’Oranger –excellent!
John Varvatos Artisan —also excellent
etc etc….sigh, orange blossom…..
2nd the Artisan, lovely stuff!
I already put Profumum Olibanum under Incense, but it’s a lovely orange blossom as well. For pretty-pretty-girly orange blossom, Jo Malone Orange Blossom is nice.
Champagne (Yvresse) By YSL!
SL fleurs d’oranger!
Ava Luxe Fleur d’Oranger
TDC Alliers et Fleurs, one of Celine Ellena’s newest. Hyper-realistic orange blossom that positively floats in the air around you!
Nutmeg.
I was just about to ask that
my favorite is CdG
Jo Malone Vetyver
A top favorite note for me! Etro Shaal Nur, for sure!!!
FENDI THEOREMA —I’m packing this for on that deserted island along with my Champagne de Bois and Rue Cambon and Ubar and I’ll need a bigger suitcase….no clothes, it’s my island …so just perfume in the suitcase.
Seconding Theorema. And thanking Haunani for introducing us <3
Honey???
MAC Naked Honey and Aficanimal [which Nordstrom’s was sold out of both when I tried to check them out last week! 🙁 ].
Got them both – nomnomnom
Me too..
Rub it in you guys. ha
I’d be happy to send you samples of both of them! If you’re on MUA, I’m there under the same name, but all one word. Drop me a line.
I haven’t signed up there yet – i really need to get on the ball and do it! That’s on my to do list for later when i get home.
Guerlain L’Instant and Chanel Beige
Miel de Bois, which I’m sure won’t get many votes 😉
I love it, but I’m afraid to wear it out of doors.
HA — I wouldn’t wear it out either!
I’ve always wanted to try Miel de Bois since I really like a honey accord, but am a little frightened…
Miel de Bois certainly gets mine; but why not wear it outside?
With nostrils an couple of inches from the skin: Yuh-IKES!! Pure pee.
With nostrils a yard or more away: the most beautiful honey and hawthorn in the known universe — and probably points beyond.
And hey, Honey, did someone mention Chergui? I’m down at the bottom of these 15,000 posts typing madly and don’t want to go up to look or I’ll get lost all over again. 🙂
MAC does a couple of wonderful honey scents, at reasonable prices!
Amourouse.
I’m wearing Amourouse today,,..I love it, boy does it last forever!!
Not a beloved note for me. ;-( However, i do like Frapin 1270, Perfumerie Generale Iris Taizo, and Serge Lutens Chergui.
Haunani–you get honey from Frapin 1270 ?? I must go try some and sniff sniff sniff to see….I don’t remember getting any honey…but that’s okay since I like to eat honey, but smelling it too much will make me nauseated. I’m still lemming a bottle this fall, how about you?
Hi Daisy – Well, it’s a listed ingredient. Maybe it’s a favorite fragrance with honey because it’s hard to smell, LOL. Yes, i still want to get it for fall. Let’s keep it on our radar and watch for deals!
I don’t mean hard to smell. Just hard to smell the honey. 🙂
lol 😉
Ginistet Boytritis (don’t think I spelled it right)
I heart that one.
iPdF Miele Rosa
How about L’A’s Tea for Two? Honey/Tea/Milky goodness?
“Sensuous” by Estee Lauder is a nice, affordable honey.
I’m not a big honey fan (in perfume — I’ll eat the actual stuff by the spoonful!) and not a big SL fan, but Gris Clair’s honeyed lavender has been growing on me.
That’s exactly how I’d describe Gris Clair, too. It’s not a love at first sight fragrance, but after a while it becomes the friend that you see in a whole new light.
LOOOOVE Honey!!!
Cuir Ottoman!
Feminité du bois!
Parfums del rae Amoureuse!
Chanel Beige!
LesNez Manoumalia!
I don’t have to choose one honey scent, do I?
My petition: replace vanilla with honey everywhere!
I’d sign that petition in a jiff. Well, except for Spirituese DV–we have to leave that one alone.
Delrae Amoureuse is the best.
Oh I love honey. I very much need to try the MACS, CBIHP premium Accord of Wildflower Honey, and the evil Miel de Bois. But for now I really dig the green, woody honey CBIHP Revelation and the incensey, milky, spicy honey Costume Nationale 21.
Cedar!
Feminte De Bois, Bois de Violette and SSS Viole Violet and Winter Woods
Oh and Un Jardin de Méditerranée!
There ya go! Good list. (And glad this time it was somebody else who said more than one. 😉 )
Seriously Scentshelf, I think I suggested more than one in almost every category. Ha!
Oops, I mean Scentscelf. My apologies.
‘sokay…I’ve got a scent shelf, for sure…lol…
There’s Cedar in a lot of SSS fragrances. I think they must be among Laurie’s favorite notes, and she does them soooo well! Thinking of Vintage Rose…
Bois 1920 Come La Luna! Love that one…
Jo Malone’s Sweet Lime and Cedar.
My beloved MetB #3, Green, green, green and green (and cedar! lol)
Eau de Cartier and quite a few others!
Le Maroc pour Elle and Sonoma Scent Studio Sienna Musk
Cheap but lovely cedar: “Naturelle” by Yvres Rocher.
Terre d’Hermes.
Bois Oriental
another favorite note!
Femininté du bois!
everything beginning with Bois et … by SL!
Cedarwood Tea by CBIHP
EL Bali Dream, Stella In Two Peony
STRAWBERRY!!!
Daisy.
yes? heheheh, oh you know I had to say it!
But of course. 🙂
Miss Dior Cherie
Estee Lauder Pleasures Delight
Givenchy Les Mythiques L’Interdit
It’s not listed as a note, but I get a lot of strawberry in Indult Manakara. I think my nose may be confusing lychee with strawberry.
Hanae Mori, although over time it’s become to sweet for me.
That’s one I can’t wear, but find delightful on a friend.
Civet
Jicky extrait, Amouage Ubar and Amouage Gold Men’s edt (vintage)
Jicky = civet….ok yes, I agree but Ubar?? I get no civet whatsoever! Really, not a speck!
Me neither! I just tried it yesterday Daisy.
Jicky!!
Absoultely, Robin! Perhaps the most civet laden scent out there.
Anyone know of one with more civet than Jicky?
I was going to say Mouchoir de Monsieur. When I tried it, there was even more civet than in Jicky, but that was Jicky edt. I haven’t tried it against my Jicky parfum, so I’m not sure! But it’s right up there. (And glorious for that reason I might add!)
Muscs Koublai Khan would be my vote. (See “who stepped in s**t in the musk and patch section above.)
P.S. When Ayala Moriel was handing out the scent strips of absolutes and essences at a tea party here in Vancouver where she lives, we had a couple of pure, full-concentration civets to try, so I have a fresh memory of the note. Make that a filthy, dirty, skanky memory of the note. 🙂
I’ve only smelled Jicky EDT, which hits me with lemons, so I can’t speak about the extrait.
KOUROS, on the other hand…
I also love Rose Poivree. Pungent civet-rose skank. Love it.
Seconding TDC Rose Poivree. Adore it!
I was reading in The Guide that this newer batch has been tamed down…is your supply part of that or is it the “older” version? Still a skank fest?
Jared, I read that too. I’m pretty sure that my little travel bottle is the newer version. I get just the right amount of civet, for me. It definitely has that animalic vibe.
Lancome Climat & Jean Patou Joy
OH YAH! Climat Too! One of my top 5 best fragrances ever!
Lanvin My Sin
That was one great scent back in the day!
Il Profumo Chocolat Amere.
CALECHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Queen of the night (cestrum nocturnum)
Which house has ‘Queen of the Night’?
Okay, time to take a break you mean, “Queen of the Night” as a note…again, my apologies.
my apologies – I looked it up on Wikipedia. Its more commonly known as night blooming jasmine, and the real plant is quite toxic.
I think Dior Addict (bleu bottle) has that “queen of the night” note…
Oy – I just re-read the instructions and realized we’re supposed to write our ‘favorite’ scent with the notes listed. For the most part, I just put ones that I like [when my faves were already listed] or want to try [as in the MAC honey ones]. I’m a dork.
Makes no difference. I don’t even always know my favorite.
You’re not alone. I was making the same mistake.
Getting sleepy…COFFEE? I think, Kyoto for me.
Thierry Mugler Angel Pure Coffee
CdG Kyoto is my clear coffee winner!
I already mentioned this one, but Very Irresistible for men, by Givenchy. I also love the original summer version (in the lime green bottle), which retains the coffee note that the later version seemed to forsake.
Perlier Caribbean Vanilla Coffee.
Also liked Pure Coffee but never actually got any.
How about Bond no 9’s New Haarlem? Coffee patchouli and vanilla?
Very Nice!
Ava Luxe Cafe Noir. Maybe it’s the cardmom, maybe the ambrette seeds, the benzoin or the vanilla that makes it so good. Nah – it’s the coffee. Like smelling roasting coffee beans.
Coffee: “Balkus” Parfums De Nicolai.
DSH Cafe Noir — relied heavily on it during the winter months.
Jo Malone Black Vetyver Cafe — just wish it lasted longer on me!
AngelMen… SUBLIME!
Neil Morris Vault series Cafe. Smells like walking into a Caffe Artigiano the mid-afternoon rush, which was the intention.
Please don’t throw things at me (chuckle), but how about Ozone/Marine Notes?
I haven’t come across one yet that I can stand. They are weird on me and not in a good way.
ummm ummmm
let me think now.
ummm
Issey Miyake
CSP Aqua Motu
Well, I may be floating in the middle of the Pacific all by myself here (I am actually going to do just that this afternoon, BTW!), but I really like a good marine note. So I will answer my own question with a list of the ones I like best. 🙂
They are CSP Aqua Motu, Heeley Sel Marin, i Profumi de Firenze Brezza di Mare, il Profumo Aria di Mare, Neil Morris Midnight Sea, Profumum Acqua di Sale, and Annick Goutal Vetiver (“marine” or “ozone” not listed, but surely there, IMO).
I see I got a little company here while I was writing. 🙂
Yeah – Midnight Sea – totally unusual stuff for sure!
Oh, I do like that Heely Sel Marin…but I get a lot more Sel out of it, and not ozonic Marin…
Have a sample of that one on the way…curious!
Ah! Hope you like it. 🙂 (Wait…is that a good wish? Do we really need more to love, LOL?)
Neil Morris Midnight Sea
Marine/Ozonic: “Aqua di Gio” by Giorgio Armani.
Not something I’ve delved into much but I liked Beth Terry Mare 🙂
Just got a sample of that one; haven’t tried it yet.
Just tried Mare recently. It didn’t do much for me!
L’eau Par Kenzo For Men!
Jo Malone Lotus Blossom & Water Lily
I love that one! A great summer aquatic/floral/incense, IMO!
Fire Island by Bond N°9. The best beachy fragrance i ve ever bougth!
Demeter Thunderstorm and CB I Hate Perfume Black March
Coconut. {Ah luuuuuvs coconuts!}
Omg, for me, it’s Escada for Men. The original. <3
Also, I'm not mad at JLO's Miami Glow.
Carnal Flower!
EL Bronze Goddess
BBW Coco Cabana (might be DC)
Creed Virg. Island Water
PdN Just en Reves – the ONLY tropical fruit fragrance that I want to own!
Make that Just un Reve
Based on one quick sniff, need to explore more thoroughly (just came in yesterday’s mail): Satellite’s Ipanema. And it’s BLUE! 😀
Coconut: Satellite “A la Figue!”
easy: Coco Extreme by CSP!
Montale Intense Tiaré!!!!
Mmmm. biehl eo01. Coconut wood pudding!!! Grab a spoon.
Notes: Tangerine, blood orange, cardamom, nutmeg, apricot, COCONUT, rosewood, pimento, iris, orchid, muguet, styrax, vanilla, cinnamon, tonka bean, cedar, vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, ambergris, musk.
I think if I’m not blind after reading this huge thread, no one mentioned….
LILY OF THE VALLEY
Can’t stop at one here… I think, AG Le Chevrefeuille, Diorissimo, and Calypso Chevrefeuille, in that order. Have a feeling there are others I’m forgetting, too.
and now I’m confusing myself…no LOTV in Calypso…
Can’t believe it hasn’t been mentioned yet! I’d vote for Delrae’s Debut.
I love Frederic Malles’ Lys Mediterranee. It reportedly combines Lily of the Valley, Water Lily, and Regular Old Lily.
Scratch “Regular Old Lily”. It actually says “Ginger Lily” for the third one.
A strong second for Lys Mediterannee. Haunani, I think we’re going to have to go in for a FM split once I get some more pennies together.
Let’s talk! 🙂
Yes, it’s a lovely lily cocktail, though I got bored of it after playing around with it a bit this spring…
Sorry, managed to post this before I finished writing — wanted to add AG Muguet.
Lily of the Valley: “Eternity” by CK.
Donna Karen Gold
Dixie, it’s an easy thing to get mixed up, and even otherwise sensible perfumistas do it frequently, but lily of the valley and oriental lily — the “lily” in fragrance notes — are two very different flowers with two very different scents.
Donna Karan Gold showcases the Casalbanca lily, a famously fragrant white oriental lily with a huge, star-shaped flower six inches or more across. Serge Lutens Un Lys is another fragrance featuring oriental lily. The scent is heady and almost tropical.
Lily of the Vally, on the other hand, with a much sweeter, greener scent, has tiny, white bell-shaped blooms on a tender plant that rises just six inches or so out of the soil, grown famously in France and blooming just in time for Mothers’ Day. Dior’s Diorissimo is the quintessential LOTV.
You know, I’ve been meaning to mention that distinction somewhere, sometime, so I’m glad I had the chance to do it today. Wheee!!!!
Caron Muguet du Bonheur
To my nose, Annick Goutal Le Muguet, is the truest Lily of the Valley scent.
Amouage Ubar…..the most fabulous lily wafting to my nostrils!
ITA Daisy! I’m usually not a fan of LOV in perfumes as it never smells like the delicate flower, usually sharp and more bitter. But it was very delicate and beautiful in Ubar.
Hiya Rapple! sorry to be ignorant, but what is ITA?
and…Ubar is lovely….I love Amouages in general….sigh….I need that mattress stuffed with $$$ that was brought up on the blog the other day. (hundreds would be best, but twenties would do)
ITA = I Totally Agree 😉
Did Someone Say Diorissmo????? I think they did! or is It Dioressence! LOL! One of those bad babies is the stuff Mueget Dreams are made of! ROFL!
And after that refreshing list, how about
SKANK
How about Guerlain’s Jicky, in extrait?
It’s got that nekked in a barn and up to no good effect (on me anywhoo). Hope I didn’t offend anyone……
Jicky is a different skank on me – rotting pond water.
second the rotting pond water….mix in a bucket of bad breath and “bam!” it’s Jicky.
Boudoir.
MPG Route Vetiver. My boss described it as a scent you would wear if you were going into a business deal and wanted everyone to know right away you will kick butt.
Bad skank – A*Men. Lordy, I thought an alien being had crapped on my arm.
I like A*Men ^______^
I thought I would, too!! I was shocked at how fast I needed to get it off me.
For “skank”, I’d have to say Rose Poivree again.
Since “Boudoir” has already been mentioned for a “Skank” note, I’ll offer “Black Orchid” by Tom Ford.
Can anyone define skank?
I would say Alexander McQueen Kingdom.
The Party in Manhattan!!!!!!
ANYTHING Paris Hilton but ESPECIALLY Fairy Dust! ICK ICK GAG!
Delrae Amoureuse, The Party in Manhattan, and Diorella. Love the skank!
TUBEROSE???
So far, the EL PC Tuberose and Gardenia.
“Sillage de la Reine”! for Chateu de Versailles! What a gorgeous Tuberose…
My favorite is Tuberose Gardenia, too, but Czech & Speake Mimosa runs a close second.
Fracas!
Fracas, yo!
Fracas for tuberose AND skank!
AG Songes
Good on you, Songes. 🙂
Divine by Divine – sigh!
Tuberose Criminelle….it’s weirdly amazing!!!
Frederick Malle Carnal Flower
The ultimate! CF is Fracas — The Next Generation. 🙂
Oh yes! 🙂 Carnal Flower is amazing. For tuberose, especially in really hot weather, I also like Diptyque Do Son.
Jean Paul Gaultier Fragile!
I really like Guerlain’s Mayotte/Mahora, a very well done white floral.
I also love Mahora, which doesn’t seem to get much love. It’s forever linked with my 1st visit to the Guerlain flagship store on Champs Elysees…
I think because it doesn’t smell like a Guerlain, although lately that no longer holds with their new scents either.
I DIE FOR MAHORA!
i Got my Mom a bottle of it and it was an instant romance for her and the juice! If it were a little less SENSUOUS i might wear it myself!
Serge Lutens Cedre and By Kilian Beyond Love
I love ebony
Ginger, SL Five O’Clock
Slight cheat, but Demeter Gingerale is good.
Humm, I need to try this one!
Bvlgari Blv
Fig!
(For some reason, fig always holds my attention.)
Already covered – see above a ways
Byredo Pulp
Parfums del Rae Bois de Paradis
(not “solifigs” as Phylosikos or ADP, but most wonderful creamy figs anyway!!!)
How about honeysuckle?
Diptyque Olene! Think somebody already mentioned it above for another floral note.
And oh…would have said AG Chevrefeuille if I’d thought of it.
AG wins for me, though theCalypso is nice as well… and I think there’s another one I’m forgetting, been a long long day.
I did, for jasmin, which is what I get when I sniff it. For honeysuckle Goutal Chèvrefeuille. Spring in a Bottle.
Calypso Chevrefeuille – great stuff!
Haven’t heard of that!
Caprifoglio by Speziali Fiorentini is a lovely, relatively inexpensive honeysuckle soliflore.
Santa Maria Novello makes a honeysuckle frag. I smelled it on a movie star recently and asked her what it was. But when I smelled it on a strip afterwards it didn’t seem as interesting. Funny what skin contributes to a scent.
Marc Jacobs Blush. Really light and summery, with orange blossom and star jasmine joining the prettiest honeysuckle on a light sandalwood base. I think it’s inexpensive now and easy to find online.
Wow, 650 comments…is this a record, yet?
I was just thinking that!
C’mon, troops, let’s try for 1,000!
If that’s the game, I’m certainly helping, LOL…
almost there…
done!
wondering the same thing..
Yeah, it’s killing my computer. It takes forever for the page to load after each comment I post… and here I am, doing it again.
I am pretty sure we’ve never even had 600. Apologies go out to anyone who doesn’t have a fast broadband connection!
Eh, it’s all good. 🙂
This thread will be famous. And a fantastic resource!
I was just thinking—-what about gender crossovers? not really a note —-but for ladies : your favorite “men’s fragrance ” to wear….and for the dudes amongst us: your favorite “ladies fragrance” to wear.?
Last week I would have said Hermes Concentre d’Orange Verte…..but I have a new love : YSL M7
Terre d’Hermes is my favorite to poach from my son.
Second!
Terre d’Hermes is wonderful.
Bulgari Black is sold as a men’s but I think more women wear it!
Stetson and Old Spice!
I agree, TdH is shared by hubby and I, and I LOVE Black. Very comforting…… Also good for ladies is Chanel’s Egoiste.
Haven’t tried the M7, but bought M7 Fresh for the husband. Still need to try it on ME, of course, lol…but it’s great on him. So I guess… JV Artisan would be mine thus far.
Hi Boo! I can send you a sample of the M7 no problem…it is amazing—even got to dab some on the unsuspecting CEO!
Mostly I bought it for me and J….FANTASTIC
Can be had for a song at Parfum1 right now.
Have you tried the m7 fresh? might be fun to do a side-by-side… we could do a sample swap. also, i picked up tuscany and john varvatos (the original) on the cheap last night, if either of those pique your curiosity.
Encre Noire — technically unisex, I know, but it’s a pretty manly unisex. 😉
I almost yelled out “Jicky!”, but then I remembered that it is actually a feminine and therefore, doesn’t count. I think that most of the Czech and Speake’s are considered unisex, so those are out – although my favorites are between No. 88 and Mimosa right now.
So, I’m going to have to go with Stetson or Dirty English – obviously, I haven’t tried too many masculines. Hell, I’m having a hard time smelling all of the feminines that I want to try.
I am so glad someone posted this one! LOL I Wear Flowerbomb By Viktor and Rolf… Used to wear the Womens Angel, but it turned into something Hindenburg-esque after a few years! YUCK! but yeah FLOWERBOMB ALL THE WAY!
Guerlain’s Mouchoir de Monsieur
Chanel Pour Monsieur
Serge Noir (although this isn’t a men’s fragrance)
Knieze
I love smelling Clarins Eau Dynamisante, Eau de Rochas (for her) and Musc Bleu on men.
And Jicky EdT.
I love loads of masculines:
Vetiver Guerlain, Eau Sauvage Dior, M7 YSL, Pour Monsieur Chanel,Pour un Homme Caron, Habit Rouge Guerlain, Eau d’Orange Verte Hermes …..
I also love to wear masculines: Terre d’Hermes, Bel Ami, Eau D’Orange Verte (Unisex, I know), Chanel Pour Monsieur, Msr. de Givenchy, Cacharel Pour L’Homme, Cartier Declaration, Gap Blue for Him, Creed Bois de Cedrat. My masculine wishlist is longer than my feminines list: I need some Eau Sauvage, Habit Rouge, Kouros, Caron Pour Homme, Paco Rabanne, Bulgari Black, and so on.
L’Artisan Fou d’Absinthe
Dior Homme. I’d swear it was made for women, it’s so feminine!
Smoke! (Not incense, just plain old smoke.)
SSS Fireside Intense is almost pure smoke and I absolutely love it.
Shalimar!
Uhhh can’t decide!
Eau d’Italie Sienne l’Hiver or Durbano Black Tourmaline
SL Fumerie Turque also <3
I second Sienne l’Hiver for smoke. And pickles. 🙂
So it *wasn’t* my imagination or a bad sample! Unfortunately the sample nearly all leaked out, so I didn’t get a real try out of that one, but don’t think it was for me, lol.
I actually like it, pickles and all. A compelling fragrance, for me!
oh I second Black Tourmaline.
I don’t like it at all but L’Artisan’s Tea for Two is super smokey. It’s the beeswax that prevents it from being like by me, though. =P
Eau du Fier Goutal ( discontinued)
Fumidus by Profumum Roma for the cigar smoke
Hunh! Nobody said it yet, so I’m offering CB Burning Leaves.
Cabochard by Gres.
TF Japon Noir! Sah-mokin’.
(Gasp! Over a thousand comments…!)
Balsam?
Reverie au Jardin…love it!
OJ Tolu
Subtle, but the balsam really gives this juice its gravitas: Roja Dove’s Unspoken.
How about freesia? It has such a beautiful smell. But I don’t know any freesia fragrances.
Diptyque Ofresia, although it is not a favorite of mine.
For Freesia, how about Antonia’s Flowers?? It’s lovely.
Neil Morris Rain Flower has freesia – it’s lovely!
Ralph! Freeeesia. mmmmmmm…..
Borsari Fresia, AF Antonia’s Flowers
For freesia, Van Cleef & Arpels Murmure…
I love Caswell-Massey’s Freesia. For some reason, it reminds me of childhood.
No one’s mentioned immortelle yet (maybe for good reason). When I visited Paris last Spring, I had all my buying mapped out ahead of time, but one day I happened walked past a Dior Men’s boutique in Printemps and they had their three scents out. I idly tried them out, and Eau Noire made enough of an immediate impression that I had to come back later and buy a bottle.
Rick, I love immortelle! I don’t get the maple syrup thing that people talk about, which is a good thing since I don’t like maple syrup. Parfums de Rosine’s Ecume de Rose is my favorite that I know has this note.
I love immortelle as a note,
My favourites are Sables and Eau de Monsieur Goutal and L’Etre Aimé ( masc. and fém.) Divine. I have never smelled the Dior. It sounds good.
I just received a package of the Divine scents, and in only a quick sniff, I really liked L’Etre Aime. Can’t wait to give it a good skin test.
They are much better sprayed than dabbed. The Féminin is really rich and juicy and has apart from the immortelle a lovely nectarin note. Is practically makes me want to eat myself. There is a great review of both on Graindemusc.
I remember being shocked into a kind of trance upon smelling Eau Noir a few years ago; the impression lasted indeed a long time: I have finally acquired a bottle.
L’Atelier Boheme’s Immortelle…where it obviously takes center stage.
Immortelle is love/hate for me. Love PdE Fougere Bengale (which doesn’t list it as a note but I’m sure I can smell it) and Eau Noire …. but Lolita Lempicka “L”, not so much…
We haven’t done GALBANUM!
Miller Harris, Fleurs de Bois: woody aromatic green goodness! need to locate a spray tester to see if that cures either the dead spot in the middle or the lack of sillage, but mmmmmmmm is it yummy! Definitely a contender for next FB purchase.
That’s on my list – sounds delicious!
Vol de Nuit and her little sis, Chamade! Love them both, especially in extrait!
Jacomo Silences. Also enjoy other galbanums…and the light way it is handled in Bel Respiro…
Love gabanum! No. 19 and Weil de Weil. And seconding or thirding Vol de Nuit.
Believe it or not, PG Bois Blond. I think Pierre should call it Bois Blonde et Vert, because even more than its sun-dried hay, it has a very firm and deep galbanum.
Also, on the off-chance nobody’s mentioned it yet (I search at my peril now this thread can stretch twice around the equator), Balmain Vent Vert. I mean, if that ain’t Galbanum City. . .
super dangerous Daisy, now I have two more perfumes to buy…. af!
oops, wrong place, sorry!!!
Angel—if you see this comment…this thread is soooo long it’s getting very difficult to keep up, back track, comment, back track again etc. but drop me an email at Daisyloo82 at gmail.com and I’ll mix up a small decant and send it to you. I have a 3.5ml sprayer that would be just right for that.
How wonderful of you Daisy! I’m sending you that email right away. Thank you!
I’ll just sit here and shine up my enablers card…. 😉
The 14K gold, diamond encrusted one???
hahaha —that would be the one! Actually…I’d probably hock that one to finance my perfume habit. 😀
No, the turbo-charged one!! 😉
the turbo charged one with the handling package and racing stripes? lol oh! that one!
ok i read everything and now i amso full of different loves for different things, its all overwhelming….instead of logging on one by one, i’lle put in a few alltogether!!!!
honey
robin, don’t be afraid to wear miel de bois…wear it boldy and with love…it’s amazing!! I’lle do it with u!! although our distance might be a problem
another honey is l’occitance and now they have a shimmery one, which seems to be a bit more lemony and not as sweet/cookieish like before…
incense; i think christian lacroix TUMULTE (mens) was not mentioned…very special and gets many compliments.
no 22
orange blossom
TDC d’ailleurs en fleurs(my favourite tdc)
iris
there is no iris i don’t like…but no1 iris(prada) was not mentioned and a rooty/earthy iris…fabulous…sometimes i layer it with clean infusion d’iris to give it a little earthy smell.
am waiting a realllllllllllly long time to smell ISM
ambre
amber sultan
no3 cuir ambre (prada)
ambre fetish (AN)
Sandlewood
my beloved bois de isle and attrape coer….how i love both!!!!
Rose
ecume de rosine
sa majeste se la rose
no 18
OK enough listings for one day….
Randomly….am longing for 31 rue de cambon
randomly …just so…fo no reason..i love to wear no 5 extract/and no 5 eau premier occasionally
SOrry one more thing
FUMERIE TURQUE for the.tabacco thing…i love and back up bottle worthy…
Coconut!
ok, coconut been done…. How about Gardenia…
Getting the ball rolling…
Gardenia by Chanel! HEAVENSCENT!
Strange Invisible Perfumes Lady Day 🙂
Matin d’orage…gardenia plus steamy hot rocks!
Stupendous, waxy, buttery, honeyed, slightly and intoxicatingly rank gardenia: Tom Ford Velvet Gardenia.
Kai and Pacifica Waikiki Pikake. Also seconding Un Matin d’Orage.
Seconding the Kai. And I like The Body Shop’s Indian Gardenia oil.
Lavender (If anyone is still playing!)
Mine’s Caron’s Pour un Homme
gris clair….ny no 1
lavandula (penhaligans) my no 2
2nd pour un homme and not to forget…
jicky
i think the other guys are sleeping ….world times?
It may be cheating, but Brin de Reglisse. It’s got the lavender absolute that smells warm and comforting. A study of illusion–it smells like warm skin!
mmmm, sounds like something i need to try….i love lavander
second Brin de Reglisse: perhaps my favourite Lavender. So far, at least…
Czech & Speake- Oxford & Cambridge!
I like that one, too, Bunny
Mmmmmm, Lavender. I love………….
Tauer’s Reverie au Jardin
Guerlain’s Jicky
Serge Lutens’ Encens et Lavande
second both Jicky and Encens et Lavande!!!
Histoire de Parfum’s “1725” – like Brin de Reglisse it’s a lavender/anise accord but is a warmer and more full-bodied perfume and is unlike anything I’ve ever smelled, not that I’ve smelled a lot. I love BdeR so I’m surprised I’m falling so hard for this variation.
My second goes to Reverie au Jardin.
third, though I also placed under balsam. this was my favorite Tauer until URC came along.
Fourth, fifth, sixth, whatever I am, that one rocks my socks big time.
With you all the way on Andy’s RaJ.
Sous le Vent (can you tell I’m a Guerlie-girl?)
Lostmarc’h L’Eau de l’hermine
LOL, “Guerlie girl”. 🙂
Love Pour un Homme by Caron, they did another lovely lavender a couple of years ago; It’s called Les plus belles lavandes and is a lavender soliflor, worth looking for. It’s the one that actually reminded me of le plateau du Valensole in Provence in July. Pure lavender bliss!
Caldey Island Lavender. Clear lavender with just a hint of anise.
SJP Covet
Let’s raise the temperature:
what about LEATHER?
It’s already above, Zazie.
Ops! You’re right!
😉
it’s getting pretty much long here!
I probably missed some category or the other!!!
This thread reads like a huge “to try” list or a bankruptcy inducing shopping list…..
It’s a wonderful thing!!
Like you need any assistance in enabling, Daisy! LOL!!
like enabling is a crime at this blog! hahaha, I shop a little too effectively for myself…..I’ve had to branch out and start shopping for you all as well!
Speaking of shopping ….Parfum1.com is having 25% off !!!
I wonder if I’m allowed to buy myself a birthday present…?
“shopping too effectively” – LOL!
Daisy, terrible girl… I’m jumping off a cliff now!
Thanks for the heads up on the sale….. 🙂
Here’s a new one: bourbon or rum!
I always smell rum in Ambre Narguile. It’s one of the things that makes it so comforting in cold, wet weather.
rum: chene by SL
I don’t have much experience with alcohol so I can’t give specifics, but My Sin has a beautifully boozy top note. Of course, it’s discontinued.
another thing to love about Divine L’ame Soeur–it’s big boozy floral goodness! oh, and of course Lubin Idole for it’s RUM. I’m forgetting a good one…..
I think Vanille Galante has rum, but then it’s not a favorite. I find lily suffocating.
ByK’s Straight to Heaven has rum, but I find that one positively rank!
Cuir Ottoman is boozy on me, but it’s my least favorite part of CO; on the other hand, love the rum in Idole!
Jean Paul Gaultier Classique in extrait is very boozy
as i mentioned above, my gravatar has the hots for yours
Then we’d have a bunny infestation! lol
Yeah we’ll crowd the lemmings out. They’ll have to go over to basenotes.
oh come on! How silly am I going to sound when I say that I”m really “bunnying” for some new perfume! and then I’d have to say things like “that really activates my bunny glands…” and that just sounds dirty! :-O
LOL! 🙂
lemmings are dirty, IMRO (in my rabbit opinion)
Atlantic, from Strange Invisible Perfumes here in LA, has an amazing rum. They list it as Jamaican Bay rum. Although the juice didn’t last too long on my skin.
If we’re going to keep playing… narcissus?
Sorry, going for the easy one…L’Artisan Fleur de Narcisse. I do love it.
Vintage (-ish anyway) Je Reviens in extrait. Years ago they even had an ad which showed an older man and a child picking wild narcissus in the mountains.
okay, nobody slap me, cuz I don’t like that….but what about:
MELONS and other melonlike or tropical fruits?
Montale Mango Manga ! yummy….but don’t ask Rapple about it, she scrubbed it off!
Hasn’t Diorella melon? Un parfum de Thérèse and Un Jardin après La Mousson also have melon, and I really like all 3 of them.
Missoni Acqua, Bulgari Omnia Crystalline (I think), Hermes Jardin apres la mousson
Seconding Un Jardin Apres la Mousson.
…Uh make that thirding 😉
4thing…..I LOVE Jardin Apres La Mousson.
Fifthing sounds rather stupid, but I’m doing it anyway. 🙂
LOL! I did indeed, and it is heretofore referred to as Melon Mistake!
Le Parfum de Therese, of course, yes?
Owning Apres la Mousson made me hate melon (sigh!) but as for tropical fruits MPG Fraiche Passiflore does passionfruit nicely — neither edible nor drink-like — with a light touch. A little too light actually; if they made that edp I’d be all over it!
Del Rae Emotionelle. So juicy!
Well, I’ve mentioned this fragrance already for two other categories, but Brezza di Mare has a wonderful touch of watermelon!
NARCISSUS
I want some dirty narcissus! Raw, primitive Narcissus…I still haven’t found one I’m happy with and it’s my favourite floral scent. The bulbs produce flowers for only a few weeks in my garden and after their gone I’m always slightly depressed!
biehl al01… probably not unadulterated enough for you though. Or Caron Narcisse Noir, but that might be too noble… curious what others will suggest
Have you tried CBIHP M1 Narcissus? I think that was one of his more wearable scents, though it’s been awhile since I smelled it.
As much as I adore and champion CBIHP (I would gladly sell it door-to-door like an AVON lady in the ’70’s) I was actually disappointed with this one!
I was think about ordering his Narcissus absolute single accord but was unsure how strong it would be. Any feedback would be ace and appreciated!
Licorice (or anise)?
already done…
oops, sorry. I guess I need to print all the comments out LOL
Milk(y)?
hah I have dial up, didn’t mean to steal your suggestion which hadn’t loaded when I clicked to comment. But as I said below Costume Nationale 21, to quote another blogger in the realm of the comforting nature of milk scents Costume Nationale 21 is like a “hippie mama”. Lostmarch Lann- Ael is pretty cool too- it does smell like a bowl of fruitloops.
oh yummmmmmm I love Lann-Ael, but Costume National 21 is good as well.
Happy – Clinique comes to mind but it’s been some time since I’ve smelled it
CSP Matin Calin
Bond no. 9 So New York
Looks like I’m too late in the game but milk/ cream, my fav is Costume nationale 21- incense/ honey/ milk.
Ha, you know I think I have a sample of Costume National 21 floating around somewhere in my sample stash. I’ll have to hunt it down. Another fragrance I thought of was Tocade. Strange milky note, but I like it.
Another latecomer…nice milky note in Gucci Rush…
Sickpuppy, sage is listed in the composition of Costume National 21, isn’t it? Do you smell any of it?
Sage is listed, but I don’t detect any.
Thank you for telling me. Well, one less to sniff in my search for a sage scent…
Saffron!
Montale Golden Oud.
Odori Zafferano. Or the L’Artisan Safran Troublant.
Seconding the Saffran Troublant, although I haven’t tried too many saffron scents.
Salt!
umm licked off the hand with tequila and a lime wedge. If someone bottled that I’d try it.
😀
I love fragrances with SALT and SALTY sensations. Not sure what that says about me, LOL. Some of my favorites: Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel, Frederic Malle Dans Tes Bras, TDC Sel de Vetiver, Annick Goutal Vetiver, Heeley Sel Marin, Hermes Vanille Galante, i Profumo de Firenze Brezza di Mare.
I think it says you love the ocean. 🙂
Probably! But I also like pretzels, anchovies, capers… all things salty.
L de Lempicka
Well Robin, you’ve set a new standard, that’s for sure!
From now on, Robin, you must always post these open threads when I have down time…obviously, I am compelled to keep up… 😉
Sorry!
Wow – over 1,000 posts!! Whew!
Anybody still here to give a shout out to some pine/ evergreen?
Demeter’s Cypress is nice!
Love the evergreens, but all I can think of offhand are CBIHP Wild Hunt and Tauer Reverie au Jardin.
Borsari’s Corteccia di Pino (sp???)
Oh, yum, evergreens. I like Ayala Moriels’ Rainforest. And Ormonde Jayne Woman.
Hi !
Has anybody mentioned violet?..sorry so many posts!
Violet!
😀
Sorry
I have just discovered that violet has been already mentioned
😀
Melon 🙂 (NST insider’s joke. . .Please do NOT reply, or you will have the wrath of blogmistress Robin to contend with.)
(J/K, RK!)
Delrae Emotionnelle! (Ducking)
HA! But I will add New West.
I like “melon” as well!!! 😀 :D:D
How about HONEY?
I love the honey in Gucci by Gucci (EDP) and the honeyed feel of David Yurman…
Delrae Amoureuse (the best honeyed drydown ever), SL Chergui, Possets The Girls Like Honey (honey and pink pepper)
Oops! Turns out there’s a honey thread above.
Anyone still reading? Haven’t seen heliotrope yet!
how about hyacinth?
I’m pretty sure that one of the things I like about Neil Morris Rain Flower is the hyacinth note.
The springy Parfums de Nicolai Le Temps d’une Fete has a beautiful realisitic hyacinth note that is underscored with a little naughty narcissus. The discontinued L’Artisan Jacinthe des Bois is supposed to be the shiz, the most realistic hyacinth. And CBIHP To See A Flower is just delightful, if you can be okay with a little real dirt- (hyacinth, daffodils, jonquils, crocuses, green shoots, wet dirt & moss).
Hyacinth can be lovely. The two that immediately spring to mind are Guerlain Chamade and Goutal Grand Amour. I am sure there are more but not ones that I have sniffed.
If anyone comes back, I’d like to see a CARNATION list here!
Carnation = Opium parfum and EDP
CdG Red Series: Carnation is fab.
Isn’t L’Air du Temps supposed to have carnation?
Maybe. It’s a floral blend with a bit of spice, right?
Answering my own… I like Etro Dianthus and Guerlain Terracotta Voile d’Ete. Also was surprised that Tabac Blond includes carnation – nice!
Tonka?
