Several people have commented or emailed to tell me they didn't like the way the Google custom search function worked since we moved to the new domain in March of this year, and so I've finally figured out how to make it work the way it used to. Most of you won't even know or care what I'm talking about, but for those of you who do know what I'm talking about, using the search function now takes you to a Google-hosted results page and the search box now stays at the top of the screen so that you can fine-tune your results, just the way it used to.
On the Prix Eau Faux, which a number of you have asked about, I had hoped to have it started by now but since I didn't manage, my thinking at the moment is that we'll wait until school starts in the fall.
Meantime, I'm still working on tagging all the old articles on the site. If and when I finally finish, I'll add something like a tag index (we already have enough tags that a tag cloud is basically useless).
Suggestions, complaints? Feel free to chime in.
Well, Robin, you’ve been busy! Thanks on behalf of us Google Searchers. I’m happy to see the search function behaving the way it used to.
So am I…the newer way was annoying to me too! Just wasn’t top of things on my list to fix, and actually it was harder to fix than I thought it would be. Like everything turns out to be, LOL…
Robin, this may be unrelated, but of late your site is taking forever to finish loading. The words load quickly, but the stuff on either side takes forever, and the ads on the left often end up with “problem loading page” errors (not this time; it finished loading as I was typing this).
Any idea what might be going on? I seem to be having problems with anything related to Google, and I haven’t heard that this is happening net-wide, so it may be something with my connection.
Fernando, I have not been having that problem, but am very interested. How long has it been loading slowly for you, and what browser are you using?
It’s been happening for a few days, maybe as much as a week. Using Firefox 3.0.11, But it also happens with IE, and it’s not only your site, so I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. Anyway, it’s good to confirm that it’s not net-wide. Next step is to complain to my ISP, I guess.
Oh, if it’s happening on other sites too, I can’t help. I’m having VERY fast page load times…no more than a few seconds. Hope someone else will chime in if they’re having trouble.
Sorry if this is a completely idiotic question, but what is the Prix Eau Faux?
A contest we did last year for the best fake fragrance ad copy:

Oh, I hope you do that again! How funny! I’m going to be snickering to myself all day about “snow leopard buttocks.”
…and I just re-read up above where you said it would maybe happen in the fall. Miss Kitty needs a cat nap…not totally awake yet…
Wasn’t that about the time of Guerlain’s Charnal (sp?) Elixirs copy that we all laughed so hard at? That copy was so funny it was hard to believe that they ever meant it to be serious. You know, I never tried any of those scents after that and I’m a big Guerlain fan. I just couldn’t take them seriously enough to put out that kind of change even for samples or decants.
I can’t remember if it was the same time or not…but they could have entered & won!
Just a few days ago I was thinking: I swear this google search isn’t the same as the old one…
Nice to know I’m not crazy 😉
Well, you may still be crazy, but that at least isn’t one of the signs! 😉 Kidding, of course.
Not Google crazy, but eveything else crazy? Definitely! 😉
So far as you know.
LOL!
I use eggo waffles instead of bread for sandwiches… shhhhhh *looks around*
Mmm….waffles…! (drooling…)
Yay! Thanks, Robin! I’m a compulsive googler on perfume reviews, so this is much appreciated.
Glad it helps!
Oooh!!!! That’s awesome, Robin! Much prefer the old search tool. Thanks!!!
🙂
Thanks muchly Robin, it saves me having to keep pressing the ‘back’ button, which was annoying me. Cheers xxx
It was annoying me too! I probably use the search more than anybody.
Love love love the new/old improved search function — thank you for this, and for all your hard work!
And I’ll be racking my brain all summer trying to think up ideas for the Prix Eau Faux, but I don’t think that even my wildest imaginings could possibly beat my personal favorite: “Be still, j’arrive”!
LOL…that was a really fabulous line.
Thanks Robin for the returned search function, I use it often for reference. And the Prix Eau Faux, it sounds fun and fabulous! I love creative writing and ad copy (I majored in Communications). This will give me a chance to use my degree for something. happy.
You can check out the old rules & start working on it now if you like — don’t think we’ll change anything.
..and I forgot how to make a happy face?
: ) = 🙂
