Valentino Uomo ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 12 March 2014 45 Comments

Valentino Uomo advert

When I tried the new Valentino fragrance, Valentino Uomo,1 in Nordstrom, I thought: “Uh-oh…I can’t smell a thing…asnomic to an ingredient, I guess.” But when I got outside Nordstrom into the fresh air, I could smell Valentino Uomo. Quickly, I realized why I was unable to detect it at the men’s fragrance counter — Valentino Uomo smells like the inside of Nordstrom, with its combined aromas of the makeup/skincare section, new clothes and shoes, a zillion fragrances, and Ebar. What I’m reminded of when wearing Valentino Uomo is not “Italy” but “American Department Store.”

At first application, Valentino Uomo smells like lukewarm milk with a shot or two of citrus juice in it…

Demeter Dulce de Leche, Espresso, Chai Tea & Whiskey Tobacco ~ fragrance reviews

Demeter Dulce de Leche & Espresso

Feeling a little pinched after holiday spending? I know I am. So today seemed a perfect day to talk about Demeter. I am fond of Demeter, and was surprised to see I hadn’t reviewed anything from the house since 2009, when I talked about Beetroot and Pruning Shears (thumbs up on both). I don’t like everything Demeter makes — I don’t even have time to try everything they make. Life is short, and Demeter is prolific. But every so often, it’s fun to buy a bunch of their miniatures. Six dollars (6!!) gets you a 15 ml travel size, although you’ll have to shell out a few dollars more if you want spray rather than splash. No, they’re not high art (although some of them might just qualify as conceptual art), and no, they’re not long lasting, and no, they don’t always smell like what they’re supposed to smell like. But sometimes they’re spot on, and often, they’re just plain fun.

On the docket today: Dulce de Leche, Espresso, Chai Tea and Whiskey Tobacco…

La Via del Profumo Milano Caffe ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 3 July 2013 15 Comments

If I could live in many places all at once, I’d start my day in Naples…or Venice…or Rome…so I could sip several cups of espresso with breakfast. I live in Seattle and, yes, I can get some great coffee here, but none that matches the distinctive flavor of the cups of coffee I’ve enjoyed in Italy. And I can assure you, there is NO cafe in Seattle that compares to the grand Italian coffee houses you’ll find from Turin to Syracuse.

La Via del Profumo (also known as AbdesSalaam Attar Profumo) just released Milano Caffè. Perfumer Dominique Dubrana wasn’t born in Italy, but moved there from France over 25 years ago. He is celebrating his adopted homeland with five “Italian” fragrances, paying homage to the cities of Milan, Venice, Rome, Florence and Naples. Milano Caffè was the first release in the Italian line. Dubrana said: “This perfume, named for Milan, is centered on the omnipresent and most characteristic smell of the city, the aroma of coffee…

WASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating Bodywash ~ scented body products

WASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating BodywashWASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating BodywashWASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating Bodywash

I came across WASH WITH JOE Coffeemint Invigorating Bodywash by chance: I was browsing in a C.O. Bigelow store during an out-of-town trip, and a shelf of WASH WITH JOE bottles caught my eye and pulled me across the room, as if by magnetic force. When I covertly sniffed one of the bottles, I was instantly hooked on its fragrance and needed to purchase it immediately. Then I went for a cup of coffee across the street.

I later learned that WASH WITH JOE is the creation of graphic designer/beauty entrepreneur/coffee-drinker Jane Schub, who is the mind (and the eye) behind the Strange/Beautiful nail polishes that I’ve been admiring at Bergdorf Goodman for the past few months. Schub’s design background has provided her with ample sources of inspiration for those polish colors and this new body wash. JOE’s label was influenced by the work of industrial designer Raymond Loewy (who created some of the best-known corporate logos of the twentieth century), the Campbell’s Soup can as interpreted by Andy Warhol, and the movie Good Night and Good Luck (filmed in black-and-white, and set in the 1950s). It’s the visual equivalent of a double espresso: bold, direct, and sophisticated…

Coffee, coffee, coffee ~ scented body products

Posted by Jessica on 5 October 2008 24 Comments

I’ve written before about my love for coffee, both as a beverage and as a fragrance. I’m always surprised that more coffee-scented body products don’t exist. Surely I’m not the only person who loves this smell so much? For anyone who shares my obsession, here’s a summary of a few high-quality toiletries that include actual coffee for its smell as well as its other benefits.

Lush’s Sonic Death Monkey Shower Gel (shown above, middle) looks like something you could drizzle over ice cream, and it smells like a drink that would set you back about $7 at Starbucks: a potent mocha blend of coffee and chocolate, with a shot of orange syrup…
