Friday scent of the day 6/20

Posted by Robin on 20 June 2025 233 Comments

Happy Friday and happy Summer Solstice! It's also World Refugee Day and National Ice Cream Soda Day. Our community project for today: celebrate Brian Wilson's birthday (and the summer solstice) by scenting a Beach Boys song, or honor Brian Wilson with your fragrance in any other way you see fit.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

If you asked me to name my top 20 recording artists, The Beach Boys would not make the cut. I like their music well enough but they get only a tiny fraction of my listening time. That said, I do think Brian Wilson crafted at least two, maybe three, of what I'd call the Top 10 Perfect Pop songs, and without hesitation I'd put God Only Knows at spot #1 (and I'm not alone). Carl Wilson sings lead, but it's Brian Wilson's genius as a writer, producer and arranger that makes the song "one of the most complex—and beautiful—songs in the annals of American popular music". The only thing I could think of to match it (that I was willing to wear on a hot June Day) was Diorissimo.

Reminder:  6/27 is National Orange Blossom Day...you know what to do! (This is another repeat.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows Brian Wilson at the controls during the recording of the Pet Sounds album.

Bonus video: the official Beach Boys video for God Only Knows, made for the Beach Boys 60th anniversary in 2022.

More videos: Isolated vocals can be found here. Some covers of God Only Knows: Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, BBC Music. You can find a complete list here. The recording process: Behind The Sounds: God Only Knows Part 1, Behind The Sounds: God Only Knows Part 2.

More reading: Paul McCartney and John Lennon listen to the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds”.  Five musicians who call ‘God Only Knows’ the greatest song of all time at Far Out. The Case for “God Only Knows” as the Best Pop Song Ever at Medium.

    Happy Friday all!
I’m scenting Good Vibrations today with Mugler Aura, which has that same atmospheric feel. This has been a fun CP.
My mom’s caretaker is well and back to work today, yay, she’s been off all week sick, so I have a day off. Getting ready to run some errands before it gets too hot.

Boo, she just called me and now she has pneumonia 😭 I feel so bad for her, she still sounds terrible, but boy I’m ready for a day off!
Robin, I feel the same way about The Beach Boys, but I’m glad their music was my summer soundtrack growing up.

    I’m picking up Good Vibrations…

And since this is such a complex song, I did a bit of layering: solid Lush Karma, with its sunny orange, bright lemongrass, and hippie patchouli, and Mugler Cologne, with its modern blend of citrus and synthetic musks. I think I’ve picked Karma for all of our ’60s music CPs, since it was inspired by the music of that decade. But honestly, this combination of orange and patchouli feels just right for Good Vibrations — like the verses and chorus, respectively. And Mugler Cologne could be compared to the theremin in the song, both bringing a touch of sci-fi.

Robin shared a link to the song yesterday, so I thought I’d leave this video about how Good Vibrations was made — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWn49TECtKA

Wishing you all good vibrations for the weekend!

Wearing Cheirosa 62 since it has a beach vibe to it. Never really listened to the Beach Boys. Could have worn Courtesan due to a beach vibe but think it would be a little too much for work and wasn’t game for Happy either.

SotD is Hyper Beach for the cp, and I’ll pair it with Good Vibrations.
TGIF! It’s been a rough couple of weeks, I have a massage scheduled at noon today.😌
The past few days at work were pretty busy catching up from being gone the week before. I spent the week with my parents as I had planned, but what we hadn’t planned is that my mom would fall and break her hip the Saturday (June 7) prior to my arrival. I spent the first part of the week at the hospital and the second part of the week at their house. She came home just 48 hours after surgery! I was shocked, but she was up walking around just a few hours after surgery and the pain was gone.🙏 I still managed to help with some decluttering as was the original intention of my visit while my mom rested. I took a carload of boxes to a church donation and packed up everything in her kitchen she’s not using on a daily basis in anticipation of their move this fall. My dad got a dumpster lol (yes, seriously) and worked on cleaning out their pole barn. Lots of junk got thrown away, but we found a few treasures too. Robin, one of the treasures I brought home with me was a 1963 copy of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan on vinyl.😎
I passed the caretaking baton to my auntie on Monday and she will stay with them for a week or two to help. We’ve been texting and talking a couple of times a day and she is recovering very well it sounds like.

We are in line for a heat alert here over the weekend with temps in the mid 90s. Stay cool everyone!

I think today is also lillyjo’s birthday!? Happy Birthday friend!🤘

I chose Hermes Bel Ami for today’s CP. I can’t hear God Only Knows without thinking about the ending scene in Love, Actually, which makes me think of Hugh Grant’s charming portrayal of a British Prime Minister who, in my mind, undoubtedly, assuredly, most certainly wore Bel Ami. Also, god only knows if I could love this scent any more than I do. Happy Friday everyone!

To be clear, it’s the character who’s in Bel Ami. Hugh Grant would wear something else entirely.

Yeah, to me that character is way too self effacing to wear Bel Ami! I can picture Hugh Grant in Bel Ami, even though his public persona is pretty self effacing. I guess I don’t 100% buy his public persona 🙂

I would put the character in something crisp and light.

But we should both preserve out own take on that very romantic movie, obviously!

My recent foray into vetiver doesn’t lend itself easily to a Beach Boys theme, so I’m afraid I’m not compliant. Today’s is Vetiverissimo from Bruno Fazzolari (Fzotic.) There’s something brooding about it – no noticeable citrus, but lots of cedar and woods. Darker stuff than anything I’ve worn this week. I’d say it’s a “handsome” vetiver.

I do love hearing an occasional Beach Boys song on the radio, or in a store/mall/restaurant – Surfer Girl, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, and Don’t Worry Baby are all lovely – but I don’t often choose to listen to the band.

    Happy Friday, everyone.😊

I haven’t tried those, though I’ve heard great things about both. I’ll keep my eyes (and nose) open for them.

It HAS been an adventure! Startling how different the ingredient can come across, right? I have some vetiver attar from India, which smells so earthy and strange, but I’ve yet to try it on skin. And of course there are countless vetiver-forward fragrances to sample.

I’m in vetiver like Daniel today, but I think this one does go with the beach and the Beach Boys just in general: TDC Sel de Vetiver.

I was never much of a Beach Boys fan — it was the stuff my mom played on the oldies station in the car when I was a kid. But then Elvis Costello did the album “For the Stars” with Anne Sofie von Otter, and that had “Don’t Talk” and “You Still Believe in Me”, which brought me back to listen to Pet Sounds in adulthood. There are some pop artists from my mom’s oldies station that I’ve come around to as I’ve gotten older, but my mom probably would have considered them to be on the edgier side of ’60s pop.

So it’s Champagne de Bois, in its original iteration by Laurie Erickson. Since beach days have been nonexistent here in the SF Bay this June (it’s been soooo cold!), CdB’s cozy warmth works just fine for me🧡.

I am pairing Fun, Fun, Fun (’til her daddy takes the T-bird away) with the most fun perfume I own, Bombay Bling. I think it’s curious that a perfume named for a place half a world away goes with a California song in my mind. I thought about wearing VC&A California Reverie but Reverie doesn’t go with “fun.”

Since I was asleep yesterday I am posting what I had planned then which is non-cp compliant

And I see her in a chypre definitely, and chose Y. This is one of the most life-affirming songs I know.

Have never tried the various Clarins eaux, but am sure there are a couple I’d like. We’re going to have temps in the 90s for the next three days, UGH! Not that hot today, but sticky & unpleasant.

Keep cool, I can also warmly recommend Eau dynamisante, a great chypre, still in splendid form, ressourçante has been reformulated, it is now fruitier and less calming, my bottle is the older formulation. They last only a few hours like you would expect, I haven’t tried the two others, Eau des Jardins and extraordinaire but there was a thread on Bois de Jasmin where people seemed to like them a lot.

Nina Simone for World Refugee Day-perfect song. Thank you for sharing it! And like so many of Robin’s CP point-counterpoint between Brian Wilson and WRD! I donated again to World Central Kitchen in honor of it! That’s been my go-to to match fragrance purchases $1:$1 with donations because of all the amazing work they did during our January fires.

I really like the Clarins line. I always wanted to buy the one you’re wearing for calming but instead ended up in Eau Dynamisante.

I’ve been so hoping *someone* would go with Fleur de Carotte for Vega-tables. Sadly it can’t be me. I have no carrot frags so went with peas instead: L’Artisan Iris de Gris
    Key lyrics:
I’m gonna be round my vegetables
I’m gonna chow down my vegetables
I love you most of all,
    My favorite vege-table
If you brought a big brown bag of them home
I’d jump up and down, and hope you’d toss me a carrot

    (Bonus, that’s Paul McCartney crunching.)

I always thought that Beach Boys were really great musicians and I have Pet Sounds in my music library so my pick is also God Only Knows. From time to time, this song just pops into my head and stays for a while. To go with its intricate structure and classical vibes, I wanted a very uncluttered but rich perfume from a California company, so I picked on of my favorites from Strange Invisible Perfumes, Prima Ballerina, a beautiful botanical musk with rose, sage and lime. It’s a great perfume to wear in summer, on the beach, outdoors or in a recording or ballet studio. A versatile pop perfection, just like the song.

Robin posted my favorite Beach Boys song earlier this week, ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice?’ And that’s what I’m choosing to focus on this cp Friday because it holds special meaning for me.

When I was 16 I met who I thought would be the Love of My Life, a boy who lived just down the street from me. In that summer I often walked past his house on my way to a friend’s house some distance away. We started to say hello, then chatted a bit, then after awhile he offered me a ride to my friend’s home in his ‘57 Chevy, and that started it all. He loved cars and introduced me to the fun of the racetrack – and he was everything I didn’t expect to love in a guy but I did in him. ❤️. We were soon serious and I remember him saying he would always be nice to my mom because one day she’d be his M-I-L. Our song was ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice.’ 🎶 Well, it didn’t work out for us after all but whenever I hear this song on my oldies station I immediately remember those blissful days of summer love. 😔. Thanks for the memories, Robin.

Earlier today I wore BBW’s Endless Weekend mini-edp & body products, a floral fruity with orange citrusy topnotes, magnolia/gardenia/jasmine midnotes, and coconut in the bottom and colorful beachy-looking bottles that surely would’ve appealed to my 16-year old self. (Had we stayed together, I wonder if our lives would’ve been one endless weekend?) Now I’m wearing EL’s original Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent, a similar but adult floral fruity version with some of the same top, mid, and bottom notes as Endless Weekend and that same perfect Beach Boys vibe! We’re headed to the Simple Minds concert tonight, courtesy of Mr. Laila’s addiction to – and luck at! – radio quiz contests.

    Happy weekend to all! ☀️🌊⛱️🩱🐚

Thank you all for your kind words. The ‘cinematic’ final ending to this story is a sad one. About 5 or 6 years ago I heard this song on the radio and thought of that long-ago time and wondered what had happened to him in life. The last time I saw him he was home on leave from the Army (Viet Nam era draft) and then my mom and I moved away and I never saw him again. A quick Internet search of his name immediately brought up his obit – he had passed away just a few months prior to my search. It freaked me out at first, but then I saw he had left behind a wife and adult kids, so I hope he had a life filled with love and family. RIP my ‘57 Chevy guy. ☮️✌️

Robin, all those years I lurked I always made sure to check in on Fridays because of the CP, and your creativity to the nth degree then inspiring the NST community for so many deeply interesting, intriguing and amusing posts!!! This is another golden one to me, so many many thanks!!!

This afternoon I will make myself a milkshake in honor of National Milkshake Day (peach i think because we have ripe peaches in the fruit bowl), contribute to World Central Kitchen in honor of International Refugee Day, and I’ve already been playing Beach Boys essentials today.

After 9 days of IA How to say Bicycle in French, I’m CP compliant in Simone Andreoli Malibu Party in the Bay in honor of Surfin’ Safari’s lyrics. I like the top notes, but the dry down on this Lucky Scent sample has been a bit blah for me. Btw, God Only Knows and Wouldn’t It Be Nice are my two favorites.

Robin, which brings up some layering questions for me. I thought that when one layered scent, you literally put one on top of the other, but I read yesterday that some just scent different part of the body with 2 different notes. Your thoughts?

Also, given I like Malibu Party top and middle notes but not dry down, can you just keep reapplying on top of previous sprays to get the parts you like? Or is there a different technique to highlight one level while downplaying another?

Seriously you layer how you want, it doesn’t matter. You can spray one on top of each other. You can wear in different places. There are no rules.

You can sometimes make top notes last longer if you use a heavy lotion or oil first, and yes, of course you can just reapply. But neither will exactly “downplay” the base notes, so you might find when you reapply that it’s not exactly the same as the first time, because now the proportions of top to base are changed.

Yes, I try to spray on different spots if I am using 2 perfumes. To me it becomes a “blend” of the 2, rather than spraying on top of each other. Of course, ymmv! There’s no hard and fast rules.

I’m going with a song from Pet Sounds, namely, the melancholic Caroline , No. It’s a song of loss and change but I’m also thinking of the dogs barking at the end of the album ( from memory one of the dogs was called Banana …so I could wear Vanille Banane for that). I think I’d pair Caroline, No with Anais Anais as it’s one of those perfumes you discover young, and then leave in the drawer as you get older and your tastes change, but come back to once in a while to be reminded of a special time and place.

Eau de Merveilles Bleue is supposed to be just wonderful. I think Kris is a big fan of it. After your description I’ve put it on my list to try. A very delightful and memorable celebration for your family of your sister’s birthday! Sisters are super duper special! Thank you for reaching out last week 🤗

No, I have the original Eau des Merveilles which is not aquatic, but rather woody, citrus (orange) and spicy. I believe they are quite different. I don’t believe I have smelled this one.

I have the Eau des Merveilles Bleue. It works for me while the parent fragrance does not. It is one of the very few aquatic perfumes that I enjoy.

This is a fresh, salty, marine scent. Very aquatic. You can get some of the woody aspect of the original, but the sweet amber note is not there.

I have Zara Romance d’Iris by Jo Malone that was cheap and smells quite a bit like Chanel Comete and La Pusa, however it is not on Zara’s website right now. Also, I was given a bottle of Ferre Eau de Parfum by a wonderful NSTer. This reminds me of Iris Poudre.

I never tried Romance d’Iris despite all the talk about it. I regret not getting a bottle, especially for the price. I have seen bottles on Amazon, Walmart, and eBay for more than 80 dollars, which is ridiculous, but still cheap considering perfume prices these days. hope it makes a come back in the future.

Hi all, and happy Friday. I’ve been off CP this week mostly trying out new samples. I really only know The Beach Boys for the songs played on the radio and in movies and TV shows. I was reading yesterday’s comments and saw people hate Kokomo and didn’t think anyone could like it. I was born in 1983, and this was a radio staple when I was a kid so I have a fondness for it. It was easy to figure out the lyrics and sing along to it, and it made me long for tropical beach vacations. I can’t say I’ve listened to it recently though.

Today I’m wearing With the Candlestick from Clue Perfumery, and it was promising at first with cherry and waxy notes alongside smoky incense, but very soon after spraying the incense took over completely. It’s a pass for me, but I still have two others of theirs to try, Warm Bulb and Morel Map.

Probably my favorite of what I’ve sampled this week has been Zoologist Orchid Mantis. It’s from the same perfumer that created Nightingale and Moth, and it is very similar in character to Nightingale. It smells like lush, greenhouse florals.

Thanks for your report on the new Zoologist scent. I have not heard anyone else say anything about it. I do own and like Moth very much, though I found Nightingale too sweet.

I haven’t worn Nightingale in a while but I’ll pay attention to its sweetness next time. Hummingbird is one of theirs that ended up being too cloyingly sweet for me.

Yeah, I’m a Kokomo-hater, but then, I was in high school when it came out. When I was a little kid, I had a great love of KC and the Sunshine Band’s “Shake Your Booty”. I’m not sure it’s a great piece of music, but when you get a lot of positive feedback from adults for shaking your toddler booty when it comes on, you’re going to like it. So I get the kid perspective. 🙂

Totally makes sense, and a funny follow up to yesterday’s comments as well is that I also liked George Harrison’s Got My Mind Set on You when I was a kid. 🤣

Yes, his review of it pushed me into ordering a sample. I have more misses than hits with Zoologist so I don’t bother to sample all of them if I’m being smart. I’m looking forward to spending more time with Orchid Mantis though.

101 degrees for the high temp here today. That’s 38.3 for the Celcius folks. July the Hot has arrived a couple of weeks early. Got similar temps in the forecast for tomorrow.

I wanted to pair “Good Vibrations” with Reminiscence Patchouli today. The psychedelic theremin goes perfectly with patch, IMO. But too much heat for that pairing.

SOTD = back in Smell Bent St. Tropez Dispenser for the California sunscreen vibe. I’d pair either “I Get Around” or “409” with it.
