The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 27 June 2024 7 Comments

From Diptyque, the Culbuto Oscillating diffuser in Baies: "One simple gesture activates the Culbuto, diffusing notes of Baies (Berries). The rocker arm amplifies these, its motion evoking memories of childhood. The Culbuto is an unusual, intriguing object comprising a sphere of solid wood and a ceramic stick that releases green notes of blackcurrant berries mingled with flowery rose accents. It is endlessly refillable." $285 at Diptyque. To refill, you replace the ceramic stick, $65.

Does the oscillation actually work for scent-wafting purposes? Cheaper than hiring a houseboy with scented fans, I suppose…

      😂
That thing reminds me of those perpetual motion things with metal spheres on strings.

I love the idea, but is there even any point in noting that $285 is a completely insane price for a sphere of solid wood and a slender, highly breakable ceramic rod which cost maybe $5 to manufacture? People who like this sort of thing will buy it (or dream of buying it) and the rest of us will just shake our heads and move on.

I really do love the idea, though. It would be even better if it were a metal rod with a little perfumed flag attached to the top, waving cheerily through the air. They could have a bunch of different scents, each with its own distinct flag.

Nope, no point. Lots of people will buy it. I smiled when I saw it — it’s cute — and will lose zero sleep over it going forward 🙂

This is a miss from Diptyque for me.
