Wednesday scent of the day 1/24

Posted by Robin on 24 January 2024 218 Comments

It’s Wednesday and National Peanut Butter Day. Birthdays: Edith Wharton, Neil Diamond, Aaron Neville, John Belushi. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum, a fragrance that reminds me of a (real) trip to the Caribbean.

Reminder: on 1/26, we're off to The Caribbean! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in The Caribbean, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to The Caribbean, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Love the image – the sky goes so well with the texture of the walls.

House of Lalique keeps giving me CP points. Today it is Lalique Le Parfum, which has West Indian bay, pink pepper and vanilla.

I’m wearing a Love by Killian sample, but I have no idea which one. It went on as a reddish liquid, and is very sweet. Not something I like.

    Hello.
Sotd is LV Les Sable Roses.
My bug, which I think is the flu, is now giving me a runny nose, cough and sore throat. I would hate it if phlegm (sorry for being graphic) joins the party in the coming days. At least I am “fully functional”..?
Made a pot of salmon, veggie and tofu miso soup. Nice and yummy and comforting.

A friend of mine just had flu. This is someone who never gets sick, and he was down for over a week. But he hadn’t gotten the vaccine this year.

Your salmon pot sounds like the perfect medicine! 👍

Today I’m in eighties-ish Grès Cabochard, which proves that there are many kinds of beauty. Everything about it is slightly off-kilter: it’s kind of astringent, with lots of dank oakmoss and strange abstract flowers, but it is SO beautiful.

It’s alllll the way up into the upper 40sF today! I’m trying Chanel Gardenia edp, from the sample they sent when I ordered my mom’s signature No. 5 body cream. I nabbed the sample because I knew Mom would hate it — she can’t stand white florals — and now I’m wondering whether it would be better in truly warm weather, because I am Not Impressed.

I have the vintage Gardenia (have to look for it). It smells great but somehow there must be at least one substance to which I am allergic because a rash appeared in the exact spot of where I applied.

Wearing Millesime Tonka today – I’m in a warm and breezy open-air kitchen by the ocean and the cooks are baking desserts for later. I stumbled into the CP today, because I saw MT and spritzed. Then, I started reading about the ingredients and notes and realized I fit. I am way behind on comments. I’ve been on a trip to a family wedding in California. I never had time for any perfume hunting – there were non-stop family fun activities and many people to see and talked with – none of whom are perfumistas. Sigh – there I was, just a few blocks away from Union Square in SF and later Mandy Aftel’s museum in Berkeley, but no right time for “optional excursions.” I am foggy-brained today, but shout-out to NST’ers in California: I love your state!

I thunked a sample of Aedes Oeillet Bengale this morning. I get a lot of lily with the spices in the opening. Yet it is a also much fresher smelling than either of the two notes would normally imply. Very well blended. A shame this didn’t make it to the roster for their re-releases.

Tea today is a Keemun, courtesy of allo, to fortify me through lots of work calls.

The cat distribution system is hard at work. We’ve had a friendly-ish orange polydactyly hanging around our house the past few weeks. We’re feeding him (?) and trying to build up enough trust to get him to the vet to be scanned for a chip and fixed if need be. It will probably have to be a TNR situation because Mr. Vee doesn’t want to dsiturb our current three siblings with a fourth. Meanwhile, our counsin had a litter born in his yard about two months ago. All but one kitten and the apparent papa found homes prior to the recent snow. Our cousin let them in to keep warm while it snowed and from the pictures of snuggling now happening I don’t think they are going back out.

yes yes yes to the ginger/orange tabbies that are usually male for some reason I don’t understand. We have a female ginger who is the same. We are told she’s quite rare or that she’s not actually a ginger, she’s a light colored tabby, but she’s orange to me.

Azemour for me today. I’m not sure it’s totally CP-compliant but there are have orange trees in the Caribbean, right? At any rate it reminds me of somewhere warmer and it called my name this morning.

I’m in the midst of booking a vacation to somewhere warmer, too, which is keeping my spirits up in the middle of a busy, rainy week. The destination is more desert and less beach, though.

Yes, and for the majority of the house damage confined to the garage. The gushing pipe was right over our storage shelves out there, though, so the rest of the house is full of the stored items we were able to salvage and won’t be able to put back in the garage for weeks, and that clutter is going to drive me insane. BUT a drywall guy is coming tomorrow to assess a couple of walls near the gusher — one wall for sure has to be ripped out and redone (and part of the ceiling, of course), but I’m hoping the wall between the garage and the laundry room will be deemed okay as is. We shall see!

I hope you won’t have a mold problem. I had a garage flooding awhile back, the source of which proved hard to pinpoint, and by the time it was resolved I had a lot of things that were damaged by mold. It’s pretty yucky.

Oh god, those low-grade migraines that hang on forever are so miserable. I used to suffer from those, but menopause seems to have cured them. If only some natural transition would eliminate hot flashes! 🤣

Right? I just think of it as ‘migraine mode,’ as in, oh, I’ve been in migraine mode for going on two weeks. Coffee helps but I have to knock it off by noon. And kissing helps (doctors never mention this) but one also has to hold down a job. Hope your hot flashes resolve soon!

Today I’m in Kilian Amber Oud for the bay leaf note and because it smells amazing. Yesterday I wore my beloved comfort scent, Lèa by Calypso St. Barth, which worked for the CP since it was a Caribbean brand. I needed comfort because I fell coming home from my walk Monday night and cut my hand open on the lower part of the palm. I was rounding the corner into our apartment building (and we live on a steep hill), and I slipped on the stupid sidewalk, which is the kind that has rocks pebbled into it. Gave my partner a terrible shock when I walked in with a bleeding hand. Luckily, the cut wasn’t super deep and it’s doing much better today. Another stupid result of taking a spill is my sore arm just above the elbow where I just have torn some muscle. That was delayed pain and I’ve really been feeling it last night and today. However, I am thankful my injuries weren’t any worse!

I remember you mentioning slipping on those sidewalks before (and I have done the same thing). Scary! Are you wearing shoes with leather soles? Because those are the worst. I hope everything heals quickly. Hugs!

Yes, I slipped on this type of sidewalk a year or two ago but luckily didn’t have injuries from that one. No leather shoes but definitely the soles of my walking shoes are quite worn down in spots. Thanks for the hugs!

Oh, I can definitely sympathize with injuries from a bad fall! I’m so sorry. Hope your sore arm improves soon. We have those sidewalks out at my university and they are extremely slippery in wet weather. I have fallen on them and seen some other people fall, as well.

I truly don’t understand why these types of sidewalks are in Seattle, a city known for its wet weather, much less the sidewalk of a steep hill. It boggles the mind. Also, on the busiest street in my neighborhood, there are parts of the sidewalk with mosaic tile and an artsy spot with metal footprints showing the steps to a dance. Both of which were very slippery when it’s wet out. Such odd (unsafe) choices for this city.

Thanks, and no it wasn’t nearly bad enough for stitches, thank goodness! The worst part, and what caused the most bleeding, is a chunk of my skin is missing in the middle part of the gash. And of course the pain was also the worst part. But it’s kind of amazing how fast the body can repair itself.

Vintage EL fans: just got an email from T Magazine (NYT offshoot)
mentioning that EL’s releasing an updated set of scents, including Knowing, White Linen, Azuree, Estee and Private Collection on 2/1.
They are calling it the Legacy Collection, retooled with the help of Frederic Malle and the perfumers Anne Flipo, Carlos Benaim and Bruno Jovanovic. It sounds like the whole collection needs to be purchased ($280) or maybe they’ll be available individually.

We have mild temperatures (65) but incessant rain and some area flooding. It’s gray and dreary again. My SOTD is one of my Saudi perfumes, Reef Obaya, which leans heavily masculine and comes off like a men’s cologne, but not quite. The notes are listed as pineapple, leather, and oud. I’m taking CP credit for the pineapple, which is a very pleasant and interesting variation on the more typical citrus top note of a traditional cologne.

I’m spending my days doing some new cat paintings in what my friends call the “blobby” style, which means, painting loosely wet on wet with a big brush, to create swaths of color that spread out in what I hope are pleasant ways roughly conforming to the shapes of a cat’s body. It’s fun to experiment with.

    No smoothie tonight
After yesterday’s Champs Élysées I decided to wear another seldom mentioned perfume, Idylle EDP, I still have a soft spot for this musky floral, and IIRC I have also the EDT and two flankers whose names I forget. Tonight I am in Weil Suki Essence, all plums, dates, cinnamon and incense, Fragrantica says oud too but Suki box says not, if any, then it’s only a whisper. It used to be so affordable too but with prices of perfumes lately perhaps not the £12 I paid three or four years ago.

I opened my Estée Lauder package! The Advanced Night Repair serum is beautifully decorated with a dragon. My only disappointment was the red pouch was missing. The CSR promised I will get it in ~ 4 days. Keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed!

Totally not with the Caribbean this week.
Have on a cashmere sweater and copious sprays of Silky Woods.
Went ALL the way to Orange County yesterday to drop off clothing and shoe donations and then to the mecca known as South Coast Plaza to recycle two bags of Eileen Fisher clothing.
I walked past Celine, Dior, LV and of course Nordstrom and didn’t test or buy anything.
    So there.
Had a recruiter I know contact me Monday evening out of the blue to see if I was available and I have interview with client this afternoon!
Also heard about the Executive Fellowship, passed the first round and onto the second tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Gail! And it was GOOD tiramisu cake. Tasted like the stuff you can get at old school Italian restaurants.

Still figuring out where things are out here. Lots of wide open spaces even along the Front Range, compared to South Jersey.

Jalapeño, if you are reading, the answer to your question yesterday is that the AG Myrrhe Ardente body cream IS moisturizing and feels very nice. I would say it’s on the lighter side, not super heavy/rich and def not oily.
