Thursday scent of the day 12/21

Posted by Robin on 21 December 2023 196 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Winter Solstice! 10 more days to go for 2023. Birthdays: Rebecca West, Frank Zappa, Samuel L Jackson. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing my favorite fragrance buy of 2018, Aftelier Candide.

Reminder: 12/22 will be Best Buy Friday...wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2023. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year. (This is a repeat from 2016)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Today I am +1 years old.
As a gift to myself I bought my sotd, Imagine Guerlain. It is a golden honeyed orange blossom with a vanillic benzoin base. A touch powdery.
I am meeting up with friends for a night out. I will maybe have a glass or two of some cocktail.

    Hi everyone!
As you may remember I’ve been trying to get into perfumery school for years and almost got there in 2019. This year Givaudan finally announced a new recruitment, first one since then, and sadly I got rejected from further steps after recording a 1st video interview. This is not my month for sure 🙁

    Seeking some comfort now.

Oh, what a shame! Do you have any constructive criticism from them as to why you didn’t progress further, things you could do to increase your chances in the future? Or do you have the learning and the wherewithal to set out on your own, without formal training? Lots of precedent for that!

I’m sorry. It’s so hard when you experience a form of rejection. Take some time to recover, and try again-one thing I’ve learned as I get older is this: there are more opportunities than first seems apparent.

Take care, and you have all my sympathy,

      Carole

That’s so disappointing. I wonder who they were searching for to fill the available positions as you are so well-qualified, with proven passion for perfumery. The automated rejection was shoddy, as I know you would have thought carefully and put a lot of preparation in for your application. I hope you can see past all this and keep believing in yourself. And I hope next year opens new doors for you.

The previous time I was being recruited it wasnt a part of the process.

But this time it was, I received a link to the platform where I would turn my audio and video on and get recorded as questions were appearing on screen. Like an interview but you weren’t talking to the employer directly.

Today I’m in Yves Rocher Orange et Chocolat, their limited-edition Christmas scent from I think 2010. It’s exactly what it says on the label, and it’s so endearing.

But what isn’t endearing is that Terry’s Chocolate Oranges are no longer called that, at least not in Canada, because they aren’t chocolate any more: they’re “chocolatey confection” because part of the cocoa butter has been replaced by cheaper vegetable fat, and so they’re just Terry’s Oranges. I mean, not in my household they’re not, because I’m not buying them any more. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered this! Another Christmas tradition shot to hell.

I have so many things to do today, getting some gifts, cooking, cleaning etc.
I am making Armenian Christmas pudding with wheat, dried fruits, spices and rose water.
It is a long process that takes 3 days, usually my mom makes it but this year i decided to take over. We will see how it goes!!!

    Good morning all,
My SOTD is Asja from Fendi, spices, resins, orris, Benzoin and amber.
Today is my Friday, we’re on break starting from 12/22/23-1/2/24, I need the break and have a few books I’m looking forward to reading over the holiday.
We received a nice holiday message (and several holiday parties) from our Dean, being in a new department has some nice surprises! We’re headed to the Brother and Sister in law’s house on Saturday, I’m getting the ingredients for my potato cheese casserole which I volunteered to bring. Looks like I might have a new year’s resolution after all, carbs and more carbs! 🙂

Happy friYAY, folks! Returned to civilization from the great desert wilderness yesterday and picked up my mail, finally! Lots of goodies in that 12x12x12 box! Overnighted at a casino which must be right on the flight route of fighter jets from the near by Air Force base. Woken at 7am with sonic booms and tremendously loud engines. T-Rex was not a fan. 🛩️

Wearing Divine Essential Vanilla this morning. I have smelled this in the wild at some point or another because it’s very familiar. Or I may have sampled it way back in the day when I was on vanilla quest to find something to replace my long gone Vanilla Lace. It’s quite nice- not overly sweet or cup-cakey, there’s something that lifts it so it’s not heavy like many other vanillas. I could easily wear this in the summer. A travel size is perfect as I don’t need any more full bottles. (Talking to my wallet there. I have to pacify it with some insincere declarations of frugality!😉) This is a contender for my trip to Bordeaux in April. I want to bring just a single fragrance that can fit any and and all occasions and it must be travel friendly. What I don’t like is there is no cap, so the spritzer could easily be depressed accidentally in my carry on or backpack. 🤔

Later, we are off to our “Holiday Home” for Christmas amongst the saguaro giants. 🌵So looking forward to it. Here’s a nice bird house saguaro in the casino parking lot.

I have “things” to do this weekend but I’m not making a list because I’m hoping these things will just disappear of their own volition.
If they’re not on an official list, they don’t exist, right? Right! 😀

I’m with you on the absence of list-making. I hope your Christmas house is beyond the boom of jet planes, and you can nestle in and enjoy the peace. I like the photo of the bird nest…the kingfishers here make burrows like that in some softer barked trees and mud banks.

Another drizzly day. Yesterday our summer solstice “high” was 12C (53F) and I was in my flannel shirt all day. A two hour drive away it will be around 30C so our town empties over Christmas as lots of people leave to search out summer temperatures for their long holidays (3 or 4 weeks). It’s like a ghost town here. One of the lovely things about my last weekend away was walking through paddocks of flowering briar roses and lupins. The large clumps of spreading wild lupins smell like clover and the briar roses are very sweet, like raspberry jam heating on a stove ( just like roses jam perfume). The vipers bugloss was also flowering so there were lots of nice contrasts between the yellowish parched paddocks, the mauve and pinks of the lupins, and the cornflower blues of the bugloss…and then the turquoise sparkling glacial lakes. I’m wearing Ambre des Merveilles , to add a bit of warmth to the day.

Full bottle of Eau des Sens was my best buy for 2023. I’ve loved the scent but have only ever purchased travel sized and this year I went for full commitment. I think it’s the juniper in this that I’ve grown so fond of.

Heading to Paris for Christmas! Very excited and would love any new perfume shopping recs. We don’t have a lot planned which is intentional. The plan is to meander and enjoy the beauty of Paris at Christmas.

I’m wearing DSH December Holiday No. 10 today because I recently ordered some fun samples from DSHPerfumes.
Breakfast on the Go – one of her one-of-a-kind UPCYCL fragrances. Lots of orange in this one. It’s light and pleasant.
Vanilla Nog – I expected nutmeg and cream but it’s a bit too buttery for a while for my taste.
December Holiday No. 10 – this one is WONDERFUL (sorry to shout). It’s got the pines and the incense and some warm spices in the drydown. It’s not gourmand, but it’s got a subtle sweetness that I really appreciate. So lovely. And will likely be a FB buy for me at some point. Thanks to 50_Roses (I think it was you) for the rec.

It’s my last working day of the year! It’s been constant upheaval and frustration at work with huge organisational changes. I’ve been struggling for weeks to get information about the people reporting to me, and I’ve finally discovered that I’ve been moved to a different payroll, so none of the HR systems show me as their manager. Onwards and upwards 🙂
Perfume-wise, I’m wearing L’Heure Attendue, another of this year’s FOMO purchases of the discontinued Patous.

My SOTD is Amouage Lineage. It’s among my favorites that I’ve found this year, though I can’t say I’ve worn it a lot because all I have is a small spray sample. I haven’t yet sprung for the daunting price of a full bottle, $360.

The scent profile on Fragrantica lists a lot of notes I don’t really experience. They call it a spicy ginger amber scent. To me what stands out is the pepper and something pleasantly sweet, perhaps benzoin or frankincense. I have caught aspects of it wafting out around me as if they belong to unexplored parts of the environment. This makes it a fascinating perfume to wear, and I’m pretty determined to get some.

Ah, the NHM connection makes sense.
I’m a low-level Sigur Rós fan. And it definitely explains the brand’s whole conceptual multimedia take on perfume. Each bottle comes with its own sound piece via QR code and they’ve even released a scent tied to their European tour. Which I find amusing. (And notably, for international shipping they send everything first to their warehouse in the U.S.)

A day off running around doing errands. I am now on my 4th return of thermal back curtains. This time it was because the description said thermal back but in reality there was no backing at all. By the time I actually find some I like, it will be spring.
I’m wearing YSL Libre edt from a sample. Yesterday I stopped a lady to ask what she was wearing and this was it. ( although I didn’t ask the concentration) I really liked it on her. I am not sure about on me. I will say that it seems to last forever.

The changes at Mugler made me pay close attention to discussions here and several other blogs about various special editions and flankers of Alien and Angel. You know you are in the right place here when you see this on a website sale, purchase it at LAX, text your friend who is watching your house while you are in Africa and asks her to deliver it to your home after having it delivered to her home

Does this count as a travel purchase? or a regular purchase since technically the plane hadn’t left yet?

Still commando today. I had a running assessment this morning, so wasn’t planning to put anything on until after. And then in the midst of my 8 a.m. meeting my spouse texts me asking what’s going on at the school because it was surrounded with police at dropoff. Open my email to find an email from school administration in all caps telling us not to bring our kids to school. Kids with early off-timetable classes were already at school and sheltering in place, and Ockeghem Teen was texting with them but no one knew anything.

Turns out she’s studying the technology of warfare in Socials, specifically the muskets used in the 18th century and how poorly they aimed. And…one of the teachers came to school this morning with a 5-ft vintage musket to help demonstrate. Another teacher saw him from inside the school and called 911. Apparently he was as surprised as anyone when the SWAT team entered his classroom where he was sheltering and took him down. Whoops.

More excitement than I needed today. But back to normal now. Mr. Ockeghem is grading final exams and someone referred to the “angus dei”…cow of God? 🙂 Maybe I will pull out my sample of Cow tonight.

Another crazy busy day today. But! I have almost cleaned out my last storage unit. The only things left in it are a small table, a cat condo, and a set of heavy duty shelves I need to finish breaking down.

So I treated myself to a Shake Shack burger for dinner. Should have grabbed 2 of them, since I worked up an appetite. But $7.35 for a burger is pricey!

SOTD = commando, except for Dame Perfumery Orange Flower body butter in the usual spots.

I love Shake Shack, but yeah, it is not cheap fast food. Congrats on getting so much done Jalapeno!

Oops it’s getting late, and I just remembered I haven’t reported in. Maybe I should have saved this for tomorrow, but I am in the crowd favorite of the year, Shalimar MI today. Smelling so good!

You can wear it tomorrow too! It’s probably my most practical buy as it’s so easy to wear.

Yes, very good point! I was actually considering it but my two very recent purchases just arrived so fast that I might wear one or both of them tomorrow!

Commando today as I’ve been being stalked by a migraine for a few days now. Flying solo tonight as Biscuit is with his dad, but I’m planning a solstice ‘bonfire’ in my fireplace and a nice soak later with some Dr. Haushka Spruce Bath.

That bath sounds like just the thing! I hope it kicks your migraine to the curb…👊🏻

I also just realized that I have more perfume loves that can fit into one week. It is a good problem to have. 🤣

Wow! Time flew. We’re almost at Christmas – 4 days away! It is discombobulating when there are so many weekends for targeted 🛍️.

So true! I still have some Halloween decors out but they have now become part of regular decors.

It did come up fast. Even with an early Thanksgiving.

The ever-changing Thanksgiving date is the cause, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!
