It's Tuesday and United Nations Day. The splitmeet is still open for business! What fragrance are you wearing?
Me: same as yesterday. I am feeling much better but still have a bit of lingering congestion...I'm probably going to be commando for a few more days.
Reminder: on 10/27 we're doing Specialty woods... wear a perfume with guaiac, cypress, oak, or some other specialty wood note we haven't already done (we've covered oud, sandalwood, cedar and evergreens).
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the harewood marquetry tea caddy ("...of oval form with a hinged lid opening to reveal two zinc lined compartments, decorated in fruitwood and boxwood marquetry with classical motifs including winged palmettes and foliate scrolls, a paper label attached inside the lid states ‘Given by Queen Charlotte to Edward Harding (husband of Sarah Bawtree) Librarian at Frogmore’. English, circa 1790") is $5,505 at 1st Dibs.
Hello!
Sotd is Zara Leather Jardin. I don’t think Zara can top this release any time soon. Love it.
I tried this Portuguese Coconut Chicken and it was so delicious that I have been looking up recipes. It is essentially chicken cooked in turmeric coconut milk, with some potatoes and carrots. Great served with any sort of carbs (for the rich sauce!). Will attempt cooking this maybe Friday.
That sounds wonderful! If you have found a recipe you especially like, would you please share it here?
Yes I will!
Will you get a BUB of the Zara?
I have 3 bottles 🤣
SOTD for me so far is PF Candle Sweet Grapefruit diffuser oil, which my kid spilled all over the shoe cabinet / landing strip on the way out the door. There are worse things. After my shower, I’ll look into something else more in line with the CP, probably with cypress.
Yesterday I wore Lyric…what I had in my travel bag wasn’t really CP-friendly, but we’ll go with the enigmatic “woodsy notes” that Fragrantica lists?
Ended up in Kyoto today for the hinoki cypress.
Excellent choice.
I’m wearing Chanel 19 edt for a warm mid 70s day. Taking my mom for a drive to look at pretty leaves while the sun is shining, we’ve had such a rainy fall and she gets to feeling down when it’s dreary outside. I’m going to drive her to the little town where she grew up.
Aww, how sweet, sounds fun!
I, too, am wearing 19 for an unseasonably warm day.
May you have a cheering outing.
Aww… have a great day!🌞
That’s so nice of you ringthing to drive your mother around.
So nice – have a wonderful time!
That’s nice. As my mother continued to lose her sight and her world got smaller, rides were a big deal with a stop at Starbucks for whatever she fancied.
Enjoy.
Oh, what a good daughter you are, hope three will be lots of fall scenery.
Hope that you and your Mom had a wonderful drive today!
I’m wearing Encre Noire for the cypress top note.
Smelling wonderful!
Brilliant! I’m going to steal this idea later this week. 😁
PG Bois de Copaiba because it’s been a long time and it works for the cp today. Mahogany and Copahu balm (an oleoresin from the copahu tree as Portia mentioned yesterday).
Sitting at my computer getting up the energy to work out. It’s weights day.
Double points!
I am wearing Maison Margiela By the Fireplace – for guaiac wood in it.
I also added a few drops of Future Primitive Soap Milk Wood perfume (oil based) to the unscented body lotion and used it as a base layer for extra woodiness. Milk Wood does not have any specialty woods, but it is a very cozy woody scent which goes perfectly with By the Fireplace. MW mostly smells of patchouli, sandalwood, something slightly sweet (tonka and hay are listed in the notes – could be both) and maybe some cedar.
I added some frankincense oil to my lotion today, just to smell something that won’t harm me 🙂
Oh, yes, sometimes I just add an aromatic oil to my lotion too – no perfume but still a light fragrance.
Wearing my new sample of Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere (Black Violets) from Fumerie in Portland. Love at first sniff.
I bought his Luce at Fumerie when I met Calypso there last year. He makes nice stuff.
I ended up buying Luce as well this spring. His stuff is hit or miss for me, but the ones that work are great.
This house is new to me, glad it’s a love.
SOTD is PPC Samarinda, with CP points for the oakwood note in it.
This is such a lovely fragrance. You smell great.
Is is lovely. It is not as heavy or bitter as I might have expected, considering that it includes leather in the notes, and I don’t often do well with leather scents. I bought a FB after burning through most of a small rollerball, and I am glad I did, as it is now discontinued.
I did the same!
Chilly morning but the “freezing drizzle” that was forecasted for the end of week has changed to partly sunny. Thank you, I’ll take it!
I’m in SHL 777 Taklamakan, which has, according to the man himself as written in Kafkaesque’s blog:
“Bergamot, Rose, Chinese Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Iris, Patchouli, Guaiac wood, Benzoin, Vanilla, Labdanum, Musk”
I love that little tea box but then I have a weakness for small and/or tiny little boxes made from any kind of material. So small they are actually useless for any kind of storage but so neat to display. My favorite one was a little log cabin that was lined in felt. The entire roof and chimney lifted off so you could hide tiny little treasures in there. So cute! Alas, they all went bye-bye when I sold my house.
Happy Tuesday!
Sorry you didn’t keep the little log cabin box.
There are so many cool antique tea caddies. Seems funny now that you’d have a lock and key for your tea!
YAY for no freezing drizzle!
I chose Ormonde Woman this morning for its black hemlock note. Hemlocks are evergreens, but hoping for points anyway because (a) they’re not “typical” evergreens, and (b) they’re one of my favorite trees of those in the little forest in my back yard. Mine probably aren’t black hemlock, but they are fluffy and lacy-looking and they have the cutest tiny little cones about the size of a thimble.
Hemlocks are so pretty. PA’s hemlocks are in decline, as in other eastern states, from that bug whose name I can’t remember.
Oh, that’s so sad. Here the scourge for the past several years (decades really) has been Dutch Elm Disease. We lost a lot of them in the downtown Portland area.
Those hemlock cones sound adorable!
They are! I wish I could think of something clever to do with them.
My parents used to have a few pine cones on our Xmas tree as ornaments, way back when.
I’m wearing La Liturgie des Heures for the cypress note this morning. It’s supposed to rain all day today so I am staying inside and making a fish pie for dinner.
The Ginger Biscuit split is still open!
You smell great!
Hello all!
I’m in Tutti Twilly today. My mom bought a small bottle since she loves the original. She gave it to me, saying it smells like bug spray. Well, she doesn’t like litchi but it’s definitely a favorite fruit so I was excited. And it really does smell like a bowl of peeled litchi, with a bit of the bitterness of biting into a pit. It does still have a bit of the suede-like Twilly base. I keep thinking my mom is nearby! It’s lovely and just unusual enough that I think y’all should try it, if you liked the original or litchi.
I got my physics test grade back today and I still have an A in the class, but barely. I had a hard time with this one, so I’ll consider it a win.
Have a great day all!
I’m glad you’re still carrying an A!
Congratulations on the A!
I have been enjoying Tutti as well, really nice spring perfume and has a few twists and turns. Congratulations on your A!
Well done on the A in the class, you make TT sound very tempting.
Congrats!
Congratulations on the “A”! Well done!
Shalimar Iris by proxy, from filling my splits.
I discovered Asian pears at Trader Joes recently. Delicious!
They had some nice ones at my farmers market last week…have one I was saving up but I’m all out of nice cheese so it will have to wait.
Wearing no 5 edt today and down to one spray left. I think that I will apply that last spray before bed.
Scent twins!
We seem to be trendy with the woods CP this week. At least, I’m noticing coverage of woody scents in the news. Here’s another one: https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/beauty/fragrance/woody-perfumes.
If it is really a trend now, I welcome it. We need more woody scents, in my opinion.
Thank you very much for the article.
Sampling Rosendo Mateu 1970 today…Tonka Expansion Glamour. Getting sweet and spicy citrus, tonka, vanilla and chocolate to my nose. Very nicely done and will see how it progresses.
Yesterday I had a super craptacular and stressful workday with a confluence of events…happily for today, so far, there a lot less 💩 . 👍🏻
Yay for a nice perfume and less crap! 🙂
Sorry you had a rotten day. Here’s to a happier day today.
Ugh, sorry that yesterday was craptastic for you.
Hope today went much better than yesterday. If nothing else, from the description of your SOTD, you smell amazing
Awash in Diptyque L’Eau Trois as the decanting continues. Pine tree city!
The description of L’Eau Trois sounds so good!
It’s a good one, especially this time of year🍁
Have been busy with school but made it through midterms and am now on break. Wearing Jangala for its rosewood note. Went to the shelter yesterday, met with two cats and came home with Rogue, a sleek little one year old black cat. Apparently, she decided to squawk at us and demand pets and turn on her purr setting by wandering all over the bed when we were trying to fall asleep. She is very sweet
I love black cats. ConCATulations!!
We adopted a cat from the shelter last year. I had intended to get black female, so naturally I came home with a blue tabby male. It does seem rather inevitable, however, because we have always had a male tabby, and every time we have lost one, another has come along shortly to fill the spot. He has turned out to be the sweetest, most affectionate cat and I can’t imagine our lives without him.
The cat distribution system clearly deems you a male tabby caregiver
It seems that we are destined always to have a shorthaired male tabby. We are on our fourth one now; over the past 36 years, we have never been without one for more than a few months.
Awww. a sleek black little purring kitty sounds so wonderful!
A new kitty! I’m so happy for you.
Congratulations! 🎈 I am happy for you and your sweet kitty.
Congratulations on a new cat!
Congratulations on the addition to your family.
Congrats on your new panther! And “Rogue” is a cool name.
Congratulations, Rogue is a great name!
Kudos to you for going to a shelter! The little black kitty is very lucky to have you! 🐈⬛
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Congrats on the sweet new void kitty! “Rogue” is a great name for a black cat.
Congrats on your new Kitty Witty!
Congrats on your parlor panther! Black cats have such a sweet disposition.
Yay for a new black cat in the house!
For Madtowngirl-if your people who dibbed on your splits don’t come through, I would be interested. Just let me know.
I am with Dawn today in No. 5 EDT.
https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2023/05/15/the-dress-diary-of-mrs-anne-sykes/
That’s a beautiful tea caddy, perfect for perfume sample storage.
I am reading an interesting book written by a fabric historian about an album of fabric swatches she was given. The swatches are all accompanied by brief descriptions of dates, and gowns, and the historian managed to figure out who had created the album, a Victorian English woman, and the dresses and occasions …and countries she visited.
Wearing Bois de Vanille. It’s a warm morning but snow is forecast for later this week. Looks like winter is reluctant to leave.
How lovely…are you reading a paper copy or ebook? Would love to know if the color plates are in the kindle version.
Such a lovely box, Robin.
Not a lovely price tag.
I too love boxes and managed to bring a small one home from Tanzania to add to the collection.
Finally, have two interviews this week.
SOTD is Silky Woods as it feels cooler in SoCal yesterday and today. Combined with darker evenings, a fall scent is just right.
Good luck with your interviews!
thanks!!
Silky Woods is lovely.
Isn’t that pretty?
Very good luck!!
I’m not doing the CP today. When I was rooting around in my box of samples, decants, and travel sprays yesterday, I came across several of my Zoologist travel sprays, and today I’m wearing Bat–the original–and loving it. It no longer even seems that weird or strange to me, just very pleasant.
When you were sampling Thomas de Monacos, did you try Sol Salgado…thoughts? Intrigued by heliotrope and smoked vanilla, but apprehensive about aquatic aspects.
No, sorry, I didn’t.
I tried it over the weekend and found it to be very pretty, with a soft & silky, gauze-like quality. Very little projection, unfortunately. I would love to see them make a lotion or body cream that I could layer with it for even just a bit more oomph.
I’m wearing Bois de Violette, another one of my all-time favourites. According to Fragrantica, the wood is cedar, so I must like cedar more than I knew!
Smelling lovely, Gaynor! I love how at times, the cedar and violet weave their way along separately with BdV.
Bois de Violette convinced me that I didn’t hate violet notes in perfume.
Hello everyone!
I am in Le Labo Thé Noir 29, for a warm evening walk (taking points for cedarwood in the base notes 😊).
You smell good, I have it but forget to wear it.
Wonderful tea caddy today, Robin. For the fatigue you’re experiencing, maybe vitamin C would help.
No smoothie today. I chose Liz Earle No 9, a favorite fruity Chypre that has been discontinued recently but as it is a favorite I have a BUB. I’m already halfway through my first bottle which is a lot for someone with a large collection. Tonight I am wearing vintage Red Giorgio Beverly Hills. I never cared for yellow Giorgio which was everywhere when I lived in NYC but always loved Red. I know it’s too sweet to be elegant but here you are I have a weakness for it, it is very diffusive for one thing and as nobody was interested I got that pristine, large vintage for a few pounds.
The regular Giorgio was not for me either. Do you know is the vintage bottle of Red different than the current bottle? I have been looking for the vintage but don’t recall enough to be certain without smelling. I did smell the current version and it has a pronounced chemical smell to my nose.
Yes, it’s the same bottle Lillyjo and I think the same volume, 50ml and 90ml, IIRC, and a similar box, go by the absence of ingredients list of allergens to secure a real vintage.
Thank you!
I hated the OG Giorgio when it was everywhere. Too much of too muchness! And you could taste it whenever someone who was wearing it walked by.
Oh you feel the same, and in the 80’s women were spraying it with abandon.
Don’t worry, I am taking Vitamin C. I am taking everything 🙂
Last time I had covid the only thing that really brought my energy back was acupuncture. We’ll see how it goes this time.
I do hope something will work to make you feel better soon.
I’m wearing original Dior Addict and loving it.
I started setting up the Christmas area today at work. It looks so pretty. Too bad it will get demolished over the busy weekend.
You smell great of course, how creative to make the Xmas area, perhaps take a photo to remember it as it was before the onslaught.
Merchandising is my favorite thing to do. It’s funny because I am not very decorative in my home.
You are just keeping the balance that way. 😁
I’m still astonished it’s not even Halloween yet and all the stores are pushing Christmas…😳
When I first started in retail we would come in overnight before Black Friday and set up the Christmas decorations. It was so much more magical.
I think Nordstrom’s still does this, I like that they wait.
Dior Addict is one of my favorites. You smell divine!
Thanks Gail! There really is nothing else like it.
It’s not even November yet, and Xmas stuff is out. That’s a good way to make me hate the holidays. (Boy did that sound grouchy!)
It can make you cynical for sure. There’s a local radio station that starts Christmas music Nov. 1
I’m wearing the last few drops of Bois Belize from a decant. The notes on Fragrantica says it has guiac wood.
I looked up guaic wood perfumes to see if I had anything. I have one, but already forgot what it is. Lol.
😄
Did you like Bois Belize?
Yes. I only had enough to apply a couple drops to my wrists. Sadly, the rest of the decant had evaporated so this was the first time trying it.
Boo! That stinks!
Hey, scent twins!
Hi twin!
Another busy day for me. Starting packing up some of my breakables and valuables, plus I did a late load of laundry. Pity that I did not take advantage of the lovely weather this afternoon.
Robin, you wanted to know specifics about LUSH’s Flower Gel. I definitely smell ylang ylang in there, plus some gentle woody notes. Didn’t really notice any rose. But I was sniffing from the tester inside the store, so I may not have been able to get everything.
SOTD = commando, except for Dame Perfumery’s Gardenia soliflore body butter.
And glad to hear that you are feeling better Robin!
I wasn’t able to take advantage of the weather either.
Will you be moving soon?
I have no idea when I am moving. Gotta sell the house first.
But if I pack things starting now, there won’t be a huge panic to get it all done when it’s time.
Oh good plan. I wasn’t sure if I had missed a post or something.
Many thanks!
And good for you for getting started on the packing early.
Robin, I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better. I hope you’ll be well enough to join us in perfume wearing by the end of the week!
I’m wearing Bois Belize Intense for the CP. I can’t say that I detect the guaiac wood in this though, it’s one of those extremely blended scents to me.
I am a little better every day, thanks!
No CP points, but loving SotD Poeme. PSA: FragranceNet still has 10ml travel sprays and no doubt it is the current reformulation, but it is still Poeme. Spent the day with my friend who lives out in the boonies. So. Much. Fall Leaf. Beauty! Behind on comments, but glad to hear you’re feeling better, Robin.
The trees here are gorgeous too.
Testing a sample of Ormonde’s Arabesque today and it immediately reminded me of L’Ombre Dans L’Eau, so I spritz that on for comparison. The Arabesque has a stronger black currant note that hangs around longer than L’Ombre’s. And there is oud note hanging out in the background that sweetens and gives more body to the Arabesque. I like it and can see the appeal of it as a cold weather counsel of L’ombre, but I prefer the sparkling quality of L’Ombre.
Tea today was mix of coconut black tea, a caramelly black tea, and a chocolate-orange rooibos and I’m quite happy with it.
I killed L’Ombre Dans L’Eau when I tried it. Went straight to the base notes, which weren’t my thing.
I’m in Rania J Ambre Loup for the guaic wood note today but really it’s hard to discern the woody notes with all the chewy amber (labdanum and benzoin) and spices being so prominent. Yesterday I thunked a sample of CdG Wonderwood, which also has a guaic wood note, one of many such woods in there. It was just ok, and I don’t need anymore.
