Wednesday scent of the day 10/18

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2023 118 Comments

It's Hump Day and National Chocolate Cupcake Day. Birthdays: A. J. Liebling, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, Martina Navratilova, Wynton Marsalis. What fragrance are you wearing?

I had Red Dahlia ("Imposing Red Dahlia is elegance personified") plans for today, but instead I'm in still in bed with covid, commando.

Reminder: on 10/20, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's picks for the Autumn/Winter 2023/2024 NYFW Color Palette. (If you like, click through to the article and pick your fragrance based on the color name or description rather than the color itself, as in "Exuding the warmth and splendor of the sun, High Visibility expresses joy and good cheer." or "Sturdy and steady Burnt Sienna conveys a sophisticated earthiness." Also note that the set includes Viva Magenta, the color of the year...you could cheat and wear what you picked for that project.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is green like Kohlrabi – Sisley Eau du Soir. Reading reviews, they seem to all describe the same uptight, strict, post-menopausal woman. I must be missing something or own a bottle of something else entirely because I have been rocking this juice since my 20s! Certainly a far cry from being strict or uptight or otherwise at that age!
Going to bed very early today as I need to wake up at 5:30 tomorrow. Not looking forward to it.🥴

You smell great! The Sisleys are lovely, I find Eau du Soir to be an excellent chypre, slightly fruity, and I’m not sure how they are creating it these days with the ban on oakmoss. (My bottle predates IFRA). Maybe it is described as being for a ‘mature’ woman because it’s so evocative of the rich, old school grand dame perfumes of the 80s/90s. But I agree it can be rocked by anyone, any age.

I haven’t had my chai this morning as I had an early morning doctors appointment. Next week I am having a small surgery- the first one of my whole life thus far.
Robin- I will hand you a virtual
cup of Chai when I get home.

Sprayed my scarf 🧣 with Shalimar this morning on my way out the door. Not a flanker just the regular EDP. No one can dethrone the queen.. 😂

You are smelling fabulous. I am still going to enable you to purchase the MI. As Jalapeño said last night, someone would be glad to take it if you didn’t like it. Me, for example. Then I would have a back up to my BUB.😊

Just checking in…I am exhausted but otherwise I would call this a very mild case, especially compared to when I had covid in the fall of 2022. It is not even as bad as a normal cold, other than the exhaustion. I have not had the heavy respiratory symptoms that my son has had.

So either the spikevax made a huge difference, or one of the supplements I am taking is helping. But also, it isn’t over yet so who knows what is coming 🙂

Meanwhile I am very behind on comments! I will catch up eventually.

This is great to hear, Robin, and good idea to continue to convalesce until it runs its course completely, I’ve had friends who tried to do too much and had relapses. Plus that exhaustion is something else. Good excuse to lay in bed and read books. If you’re looking for a good one, may I recommend Elizabeth Jane Howard’s 4 book series The Cazalet Chronicles. Set in interwar Britain, vast set of characters both up and downstairs, deftly portrayed. First one is The Light Years. She was married to Martin Amis & I like her work better.

In my last couple of drops of 1990-vintage Caron Parfum Sacré EDP, one of those end-of-the-eighties kitchen-sink floral oriental things I love. It has an inexplicable, unlikeable sourish quality, which is a shame, because otherwise it’s really good: don’t know if it’s a byproduct of age or if it was there all along. But it’s all gone now.

Spent the day banging around Amsterdam and a little town (well, once a town — it was folded into Amsterdam last year) called Veesp, which is *ridiculously* photogenic. Even got a picture of a windmill there — yes, I know, what a touristic cliché. But I had to!

Cliché because it’s so gorgeous, right?

I’ve got a Parfum scar in the 15ml purple shagreen covered travel bottle. YUM. Not sour from memory, must get it out and check.

I love Parfum Sacre. I wonder if it’s the myrrh, which is definitely present and an attractive -repulsive note to me.

Oh right, I forgot that myrrh note. It is intoxicating to me. When I look up the ingredients in my favorite perfumes, so many of them contain myrrh that this must be my secret sauce.

It’s always fun reading about people sightseeing in the Netherlands. Even though I’m Dutch, I didn’t know Weesp was now part of Amsterdam. Are you planning on visiting any other cities in that area? If you have time both Haarlem and Utrecht are very much worth a visit and are only a short train ride from Amsterdam.

Aah, vintage Parfum Sacre. Great choice. This is one of my HG perfumes, and one of my first discoveries as a perfumista. I wonder if the musk in it accounts for the sour note that you smell. I can distinguish it and I musk often turns that way on my skin, but whatever Caron used, it plays very well for me and melds with everything else seamlessly, it’s all incense rose spice musk on me and lasts forever, one of the roses that ahem blooms on my skin.

Maybe you are not well enough to wear a perfume, but the picture you chose is lovely.

I felt like wearing something lemony, so I went with the most lemon-centric scent I have – Acqua Viva. I suppose I could pair it with Viva Magenta, but High Visibility seems a more natural pairing.

Not really. Orchid Soleil is a creamy, milky vanilla tuberose scent and very long-lasting on skin. Eau de Soleil Blanc is a citrusy tuberose scent, bright and more summery than Orchid Soleil. It is also very fleeting.

Since one of the colors, Rose Violet, is literally composed of two perfumery notes, I did a search and found that I could do a week and a half of rose/violet scents. But the color itself doesn’t do much for me, so I’m pairing my SOTD, TF Violet Blonde, with Burnt Sienna instead because it has a cinnamon-like vibe and Violet Blonde does too.

Feeling the need for some cozy today, so I’m wearing Douce Amere. I’m not sure what color I’d ascribe to this one — certainly none of the current Pantone offerings. In my mind’s eye it’s a swirl of chartreuse and amber, dripped with ink, seen through grey chiffon. Off to a half-day ‘team building’ workshop for our department, which has been having some interpersonal friction, so hoping the cozy keeps me wrapped tight and also soothes those within sniffing distance.

I’m still wafting Shalimar MVP from my bedtime spritz yesterday. I see no reason to change things up. 😊

I finally joined the air fryer group. I can only use it if I have hookups because I don’t have a big enough battery bank to run it. Sucks A LOT of juice! But, I love it! Groceries are very limited (expensive and far away) at my current location. I can’t find any kind of squash here and I love roasted root vegetables! Rarely made them at home because it takes so long in a conventional oven. Can’t wait to try them in the air fryer! So far, I’ve make some awesome sweet potatoes, eggs, toast, burgers, turkey bacon, chicken, Brussel Sprouts, oatmeal, and other various odds and ends. Also, bought a “healthy air fryer” cookbook so will be delving into that in the coming weeks. Bon Appétit!

It took me a while to decide but I love it so far. I had a sweet potato for lunch- just a bit of S&P and parika, with a spritz or two of avocado oil. Plus, I have it so the exhaust faces out the window over the stove and any warm air goes bye bye! I’ll be able to use this in summer too because it doesn’t heat the whole camper like the stove does. Chopped root veges (my all time favorite) are done in 20 minutes where it would probably take twice as long in a conventional oven. I really thought before buying this because I had an Instant Pot that just didn’t work for me, and I knew this was going to be a short but large energy draw. I didn’t want to spend money on another piece of kitchen equipment if I didn’t really think it would work for me. I got it on sale at Walmart for about $83, so not a huge investment. They have a newer model called the Dual Blaze that’s even faster and more versatile. I probably would have gotten that one if it was available.

Ooh!! I just got two USPS out for delivery emails, hoping one of them is my Nexin order since I never did receive the cancellation notice and refund I was expecting. I had emailed Andy on Sunday and he said they were oversold on the Tauer website, so he must have asked Luckyscent to use their stock to fill those excess orders. They should have some left to sell if they’re offering samples.

I’m matching Rose Violet with the juice in SL Fille de Berlin. Nose is stopping up again, though — I can barely smell it. There’s some sort of weather system from the subtropics going through and it’s been raining cats & dogs for 24 hours or so…good day to hunker down with tea and soup.

I had a perfectly ripe pear as an afternoon snack earlier this week. Truly delish! 🍐😋

Lovely choice! Chamade might be my most ‘yellow’ perfume. It is all sticky resinous flower pollen on me.

Couldn’t quite figure out what to wear today and just decided on Lyric. Spent most of the morning on the phone and cleaning up. Now it’s time to relax a little bit.

I hope it doesn’t get worse than it is today, Robin. My best wishes as well, for a swift recovery.

I’m doing another lavender with Mon Exclusif by Guerlain, a gorgeous sweet rendition of one of my favourite perfume notes. I would again match it to Persian Jewel.

The Pantone New Classics palette seemed much more appropriate for my fragrance this morning rather than the NYFW one. I am wearing Zoologist Musk Deer and pairing it with Doe.

I hope you feel better soon, Robin.

The Internet and TV were out for about 3.5 hours here today. At one point there were 3 Xfinity bucket trucks outside on my street. I guess someone in all that was able to fix things since I am posting here tonight. 😆

SOTD = 31 Rue Cambon EdT, and The Body Shop British Rose body butter. The perfume was inspired by Glannys’ choice yesterday. I have a smidge of it left after today’s wearing. And the body butter is a thunk!

I’m in Coromandel EDT for the description of burnt sienna but think the scent goes better with the red dahlia color. Enjoying this one even though I’m having some sinus irritation today. And we’re having beautiful weather! Sunny and 71 in Seattle in mid October. And should be close to the same tomorrow too.

No perfume yet for me this early morning, but I am enjoying wafting the last of the Caswell Massey sandalwood soap from last night’s shower. It came in a 3-pack that caught my eye because the description included the magic words “Mysore sandalwood.’ In some later versions of this soap, the description has been amended to say “Australian sandalwood.’ So maybe mine is vintage enough to contain real Mysore and recent enough not to have off-gassed all the yummy smells. In any case, it smells yummy, very unisex, and I do like me some vintage soaps.
