Wednesday scent of the day 5/24

Posted by Robin on 24 May 2023 149 Comments

It's Hump Day. Happy 82nd to Bob Dylan! It’s also International Tiara Day aka Queen Victoria’s birthday. And, PSA, the splitmeet is still going! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm flight-adjacent, in L'Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons.

Reminder: on 5/26, we're celebrating National Paper Airplane Day. Wear a fragrance inspired by air travel, or with "air" in the name, or do whatever you like with the theme, the sillier the better.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello!
Wearing Iris Silver Mist, on a clear cold spring day here. Plus a dab of Je Reviens parfum on one hand-I thought these two scents were similar, but they’re not. They evoke a similar reaction in me, but they’re not similar.

Hope everyone’s day is good-I get my new glasses later today-bifocals-eep. Hope I get used to them quickly. Bering able to see things clearly will be a treat!

Good luck! My first progressives were a hard adjustment, but after a couple weeks they were fantastic.

I had the best interaction with my optrician over my new progressive lenses. She informed me it was time, as I am getting older and my eyes need the help. I said something like “okay, sounds good….and this will help delay any continued sight deterioration, right?”

Her response: “Oh no, I am so sorry if I gave you that impression.”

I guess some things just go south!

    Hello all!

Today, “air” is En Passant, the scent of walking under a lilac tree. On the one hand I wish I’d bought a big bottle, but I’ve been really enjoying my Lilas Exquis for my lilac fix. Even A Drop d’Issey has a surprisingly lovely lilac note.

Have my first test today. Nervous but I should be good!

    Have a great day everyone.

Robin you smell great! La Chasse was one of the first samples I ordered from luckyscent when I fell down the rabbit hole. So pretty.

I’m in Un Jardin Cythere today. This morning it is just a little cooler but still sunny, it felt just great. Should be perfect for a lunchtime walk.🌞

when I visited my mother last week I noticed “something smells gooood”
Turned out she was wearing Cythere, from a sample… she wore it so much better than I do.

To be honest I only tried it once but on my skin it fell flat, when my mother wore it I could pick up something nutty (almost pepper’y) and fresh at same time.

Lunchtime walks are good idea, I should do it more often!

I am continuing with MossyBerry’s theme from last week on perfumes I have learned about through NST friends. Today is Chanel Paris-Deuville. Can’t remember who it was I gave the enabler pin to, but maybe that person remembers. It is going to be warm today here and this is scent is perfect for that. On me it is very limey/lemony. I like it 🍋

I’m in Hypnotic Poison again, by accident. My vintage bottle showed up behind a bunch of stuff and on the wrong shelf. I thought it was thunked years ago, it certainly looks empty, but I got a couple of sprays. It smells fabulous but not that different from my newer bottle of HP, which is good to know.

    Hello fragrant friends!

Today I am in a sample of Guerlain Iris Ganache, thanks very much to the generous hajusuuri who is on a cruise right now :)

I maintain what I said last time about Iris Ganache — it’s more of a meringue than a ganache thanks to the airy quality it has. On me, it is a lovely vanillic violet and doughy iris dessert. Guerlain does great vanillas, always elegant and never too much.

Going for a concert tonight for a local electro-synth-rock queer pop musician! On a weeknight! Still deciding what perfume to wear for that.

In Heeley Hippie Rose today, thanks to a generous NSTer. Today is going to be a very rose-themed day. My ultra fragrant pink old roses are in bloom and I’m going to harvest a bunch of them this morning and turn them into a tincture/extract. And this afternoon, a friend is coming over to help me dig up and pot and hopefully not kill all of my rose bushes. After four years of happy, beautiful, successful gardening, my landlord has suddenly decided that she doesn’t want flowers or shrubs on the property, so everything will be cut down unless I dig it out first. I’ve gone through all of the feelings about this, and have arrived at “The heck with it all; let’s just put on some surf rock and get out the shovels and have a laugh.”

Ha ha! I think I’ll have to quote that a few times this afternoon. Landlord is elderly and becoming increasingly irritable and irrational, so what can you do? In her mind, bare dirt is better looking than beautiful clumps of hummingbird sage, lilies, penstemon, dahlias, and David Austen roses. Such a bummer.

Boo to no-fun landlords but hope you have a good time repotting regardless!

A rose tincture sounds lovely, do you dry them before tincturing or fresh? I’ve been getting into making tinctures (mostly resins and woods so far) so I’m curious what folks are doing :)

I’m trying this for the first time, but on the recommendation of all the wise witchy women on the internets, I’m just steeping fresh petals in cheap vodka. The hope is to have a big bottle of multi-functional pink loveliness that can go in cocktails, bath water, wee doses in tea to lift the spirits, etc.

That sounds lovely! I’ve got tinctures of pine resin, patchouli, lavender and sandalwood going in 80 proof and 190 proof alc, also hoping to use those as a nice little refreshing spritz every now and then :) The pine and patchouli are super fragrant already even though its only been a few days.

I also used to work for an herbalist and we made medicinal tinctures, pretty much always using fresh materials. My medicinal herb garden (which I do get to keep) is cranking this year thanks to all the rain, so I’m planning to give the medicine cabinet a nice boost!

Here’s hoping your bushes live long and prosper in their new home. I wonder if your landlady is thinking of selling the building, and got some not good advice about “staging” the property by taking away all its personality and patina. That way, it would look like a “Housing Unit” rather than people’s homes. Maybe this is paranoid, but given the trend toward neutral that I’ve detected, the thought crossed my mind. Rose twin in Guerlain’s Rose Cherie.

It’s definitely not the most ground breaking scent but it really resonated with me at that time. I bought 2 bottles on the spot when they told me it was being discontinued (I didn’t understand that I could find it on the secondary market, at least for awhile).

I’m CP adjacent in vintage Amouage Ciel (Sky). At least, I think it’s Ciel. It’s from one of those old beautiful ornate bottles with a cap that looks like the top of a mosque that has no indication of which perfume is in it. It’s definitely either Ciel or Reflection, and some years back I was able to try current versions of Reflection and Ciel and decided my vintage is Ciel, both in juice color and scent. But I do second guess myself sometimes. 😆

I’ve worn some heavy hitters so far this week otherwise. Monday was L’air de Rien, which I’ve been craving lately anyway so was a perfect chance once the CP was announced, and yesterday was L’air du Desert Marocain. I’ve got a really old bottle of that one in original packaging that has about 8-10ml left. I am curious to sample the current version to see if it smells the same.

My brain is not computing 82= Bob Dylan…😳

Wearing Le Lion today which at first would seem to have no possible connection to anything remotely resembling “air.” Sadly, I have a small decant from a previous split-meet that is rapidly evaporating. So there’s my air connection. Not the kind of connection anyone wants! 🥲I think the top notes are beginning to turn as well. I’m glad I have a decant but see no reason for a full bottle.

The heat is starting to ratchet up and so is my level of irritability. How did I live in Florida for 30 some odd years..?!

I have a Le Lion decant that’s doing the same thing. I’m spraying liberally to use it up and an NSTer also recently commented on how well it wears in the heat.

Totally agree that it wears well in the heat! I’ve been doing a single spray up until now. Not anymore! Numerous sprays is the way to go. 👍🏼

That’s the main reason I don’t like decants. I have the worst luck with them. I hope you get to enjoy it too it’s fullest.

I’ve had pretty good luck with decants over the years. Never had one evaporate this fast. Ever. But i think almost everyone would prefer full bottles if they could afford them….

    Weekend starts NOW!!
No surgeries tomorrow and my admin is fairly up to date so I am taking a long weekend.
    But so much to do!
In other exciting news,my Hermès scarf collection has grown by 2….eeeeeeeekkkkk!!!!
Wish I was still active on insta to link some pics, but these two are stunners. And they are NOT going to the dry cleaners again, thanks to you guys and the tutorial someone linked(sorry I forget!)to an at-home safe silkwash.
Nothing to report on my SOTD,other than I got really stuck on the complexity of Vanillary, and how nice it layered with Dirty to create a pineapple-ish note.
Hope everyone has a good week!
    XO’s!🌹🌹

RIP Tina Turner. I wasn’t expecting this news today.

I’ve been sitting down with a heating pad for most of the afternoon. My back was extremely unhappy when I woke up. It started aching yesterday but was not bad enough to keep me awake last night. I think it’s a combination of overdoing stuff and stress. Bleah.

SOTD = Korres Guava lotion again.

    Ombre Leather, Tom Ford
For a long and very busy day in the office.
It was sticky warm inside, with lots of intensive meetings.

When I stepped outside and felt the cool wind it was such a relief!
(office is in The Hague, a coastal city which means there often is a nice breeze… well nice in summer. In winter it can be too chilly)

I once gifted Ombre Leather to my husband, but I think I wear it more often. 😄

I came back to post about the new Laura Mercier Neroli du Sud that was posted about the other day. I stopped at Macy’s earlier and sprayed it on skin ( because I am really not too smart) it is very much straight up Neroli, which I always struggle with because it turns to dirt smell on me. It drys down to ambroxan so right now I am smelling miserable. If you like Neroli though you might like it.
I tried the Vanille and Amber Vanille too. I didn’t detect any difference between them and the original release, but I only sprayed on paper.

Another perfume from NST’ers that I might have put off trying even though I am a Guerlain Fan Girl: Rose Cherie. Though Rose is not one of my best notes, Rose Cherie was perfect for meeting a friend today for lunch and enjoying some time at her beautiful old farmhouse. She and her husband moved to the country in 1974 and steadily fixed up the old place. They also cultivate lovely beds of native plants. Their house hits the sweet spot between an historic monument and Great Grandma’s old place, if that makes sense.

Adding in the gorgeous weather and singing birds and towering trees, especially the sycamores, you’d not be too far off. If I wasn’t such a born and bred suburbanite, I’d be a wee bit jealous. :D But they do have a poison ivy problem!

    SOTD: Rodin 3 Olio Lussa

Thank you to all of your kind comments yesterday. It really meant a lot.

I went to the doctor’s parking lot. I didn’t want the no show. I texted I was there. A nurse was sent out and I waved her away, wrote ‘covid’ and held it up. They didn’t tell her. It turned into a circus. They were not happy I told her. I couldn’t believe they through her to the wolves.

Just so happy to be home.

Was in a group meeting this morning, so went with one of my pleasant, inoffensive scents…Twilly.

Am laughing about my eye doctor. He’s very good, but he prescribed me something 2 weeks ago that is prohibitively expensive and not available in a generic version. So I asked him to change it to a concentration that does have a generic version. He didn’t believe me. Two weeks later, after some research, he’s writing a new prescription. Sigh.

Allergies are making me tired. Either that, or it could be I’ve just been busy.
