Thursday scent of the day 3/16

Posted by Robin on 16 March 2023 227 Comments

It’s Almost-Friday, National Panda Day and Jerry Jeff Walker’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm copying Aurora, a day late, in Cartier Baiser Volé.

Reminder: on 3/17, wear green for St Patrick's Day. (This is a repeat, probably many times over.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Helllooooo! Long-time-no-sniff!
I haven’t reached into the perfume cupboard, yet, but I’m thinking No. 19 in some version or another sounds pretty lovely for today. Hope you are all well! <3

Oh, and an update for those who remember me. . . I’m still teaching science and health, still in Portland, OR. I’ve slowly started going to fragrance events and shops again, and met Linda Pilkington of OJ at the end of last year and the gentleman behind Scents of Wood a few weeks ago. I came out of the SoW event with 6 labeled tester strips of things I wanted more time with before I commit to any purchases. Maybe this weekend I’ll wander over to Fumerie and begin giving them more consideration. I don’t think of myself as drawn to woody scents in general, but many in the line have a depth that I found fascinating.

I remember you, Marjorie Rose! I haven’t been around as much, either.

Linda Pilkington was at Arielle Shoshana here in Northern Virginia a few years ago. Isn’t she delightful?

Aww. Thank you. It’s nice to know my absence was noted. Fragrance has mostly been a “grazing at shops” hobby for me (I never need another pile if samples, but will certainly still have them). COVID made it harder to explore them the way I prefer, but I’m feeling like I am able to dabble a bit again.

I’m in Diptyque Philosykos from an older square bottle. I believe it’s one of the first 3 or so perfumes I bought after diving in on perfume. Really enjoying it! Added some JM Poppy & Barley for fig+, got a little soap there, but the combo works nicely, if slightly less green.

It’s cloudy here, with a high of 51. I’m good with this.

    Happy Thursday!

Nothing green about Todd Oldham, an enchanting, unjustly ignored mid-nineties oriental. Lutens for beginners: spices, fruits (mostly peach), and a whole lot of ambery vanilla.

How does Alahine smell..or as I type it Alahiiiiine
I will cut and paste Angela’s thoughts on NST since this is how I feel about it as well.

“The website describes Alahine as “an alluring soft amber,” but I’d say whether or not you like Alahine will depend on how you feel about ylang ylang. To me, Alahine is an oriental treatment of ylang ylang. Alahine takes the flower’s cold cream-like scent and spins it with amber, sandalwood, and vanilla. The result is a ylang ylang crème brûlée lightened with rose and dusted with powder. It’s warm, thick, sweet, and feminine — comforting without being maternal. Its sillage is moderate, and its lasting power is excellent.”

This is quite a cool memory/ conversation piece about visiting Paul Bowles throughout the 1990s at his home in Tangier, and also the author Mohamed Mrabet . I might join you in reading Sheltering Sky as I last read it in the 80s and also remember it as sad.

Yesterday morning I got a surprise email from the Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens: it was Marjorie Merriweather Post’s birthday, and they were celebrating with the launch of Cocktails at Eight, a fragrance inspired by Marjorie’s life at Hillwood.

“Created with Molly Ray Parfums, Cocktails at Eight, named in in honor of the hour Post would serve cocktails to guests at her legendary dinner parties, is a fresh and floral scent that evokes the experience of wandering through the gardens and enjoying an elegant evening with Post.”

This effervescent floral scent would indeed be just the thing to put on with a stylish frock for a fun evening at your friend’s mansion. It also reminds me how relaxing life was before cellphones.

I asked the Hillwood official presiding over the launch how they developed the perfume, e.g., did they give Molly Ray a brief and test samples, or what? She emphasized that they first spent a lot of time thinking about and discussing what Marjorie was like and what fragrances she wore. But, she added, they didn’t want to go too vintage.

Apparently, Marjorie’s granddaughter still lives in Georgetown and is active on the Hillwood Board of Directors. She remembered what her grandmother smelled like and still has Marjorie’s beautiful crystal perfume bottles. I asked what brands Marjorie wore and was told they were mostly Creed, and very rosy.

Apologies, I wasn’t taking notes so of course I can’t recall the names of either the person presiding over the event or the granddaughter.

Speaking of floral notes, the Hillwood greenhouse is full of fabulous orchids right now, and so many different orchid scents. If you’re in the DC Metro area, Hillwood is especially worth visiting during Orchid Month and for the Determined Women exhibit.

I really love Cocktails at Eight! I bought a bottle and am hoping it’s possible to order samples of other Molly Ray Parfums fragrances. She is based in Seattle and appears to be active in local events. Has anyone tried her perfumes?

So many people in the DC area don’t know about Hillwood, and it’s easy to visit — just a few blocks from the Van Ness Metro Station, and they have parking.

Very chilly here this morning. In fact some might say frigid! Dense frost on the truck and camper this morning. I can’t do green when it’s this cold so I went with Vero Profumo Naja which I haven’t worn in a good long while. It’s a lovely warm base with a gentle wispy floral note that brings your minds eye to new buds and bright green unfurling leaves suggesting spring is surely coming. Hopefully soon, for LillyJo’s sake. 😉

And in the interest of customer service, I have to say I’ve had TWO amazing experiences the past two days. Both completely unexpected, both of which left me stunned and so hopeful for humanity! 😉 Won’t go into detail because it’s really not important, but when you have just about given up on the entire possibility of even mediocre service, along comes an amazing experience that has you whistling Dixie in hopes that this might become the new norm, snapping your fingers like the cool cat you are, and dancing along to a very uplifting internal song. So appreciated! 😄

    Happy Almost Friday Day! ✌🏼

In Iris Torrefie today – it’s on my top-five, never want to be without list. I hope the new bottle did not mean a change in the scent, but I’m not worried about running out anytime soon. It occurred to me today that it has some of the same appeal that the old Je Reviens has. Not sure you can map notes, but the overall effect on me is similar.

My plan was to wear No. 19 today and Ormonde Woman tomorrow. But I didn’t feel like No. 19, so instead I am in Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche. For me it has a bit of greens with the lemon and an ambery woodsy drydown (I don’t get lemon pie like so many say on Fragrantica). So I’m counting those greens as a partial point. ;D

I am thoroughly enjoying our blue skies and springlike weather (finally) here in Seattle. I hope we’ll pass this on to all of you–I’m so sorry about all the terrible weather some of you are experiencing. I have a long walk planned shortly.

I’m in Amaranthine for the 3rd day in a row. It’s strangely addictive! Today I am getting a bit more of the rose, which combined with the milky facets reminds me of a rose latte… so delicious. The green banana peel accord inspired me to eat my fruit this morning. Perfume is good for you :P

I went to the dentist yesterday and as it turns out I have a cracked tooth that needs a crown… and maybe a root canal. I’m pretty nervous about the cost and experience as I keep on hearing of crowns popping off after eating sticky foods. Any personal stories about getting a tooth crown is greatly appreciated!

If they’re well done, they can last for a long time. If not, the problems will snowball (in pain, time, and expense). Make extra sure your dentist is really expert at this. Are they the same dentist that gave you the filling that failed?

Although perhaps I’m being a bit severe. My dental hygienist told me in 2020/2021 that they were seeing so many cracked teeth when people finally started returning for care after the Covid lockdowns. And if you regularly eat popcorn and almonds, or chew ice, it’s kind of inevitable.

The temporary crowns can pop off pretty easily if you’re not careful, but I’ve never lost a proper crown or had any trouble with one at all.

I have 3 crowns. Getting them was no big deal, except for the one that required a root canal. That was a little more involved, and uncomfortable. But I was never prescribed painkillers for it, just told to take Advil at 4 hour intervals.

I’ve had only 1 of them come off, and it was easy to get an emergency appointment to have it put back on. My dentist said that sometimes it happens and not to worry about it. I had been eating gummy licorice Scotty dogs at the time, and had had the crown for several years by then.

No problems other than that one incident.

I have had bad teeth my whole life, with many root canals and crowns. Honestly as long as you are numbed up there really isn’t any pain. I do try to avoid eating anything hard or sticky, but I think people with normal teeth are usually fine to do so.

Wearing Nettle and Wild Achillea ( yarrow) and trying to decide whether to spend a few hours in the library going through 1993 suffrage centenary archives, or bunking to do thrift shops, or weeding (so much blackberry and chickweed). Waiting for sunrise so I can decide…so dark now in the mornings as we are still on summertime and it gets a bit dire around now…still have light in the evenings but the mornings are as black as black.
St Patricks today and the worst day for broken glass in town as the students start drinking at 9am and are drunk by lunchtime, and smashing bottles …even worse when it’s a Friday as they get settled for the weekend. The graveyard will be a disaster zone of rubbish and human waste , as they party up that way.

You have a good memory, it’s a meditative incense, church-like, it must be the best of the 100 Bon (I have two others which are not as impressive although pleasant).

A gorgeous day here that could very easily be mistaken for early Spring. The wind is gone, and the sun is still out. Temps *almost* hit 60 here! A neighbor’s forsythia has loads of fat yellow buds and a few flowers on it already. And my crab apple tree is starting to have both leaves and flowers buds burst out.

    SOTD = still in Casmir.

I’m so jealous of almost 60 degrees! I will be back in the 20s by Saturday.

This weather isn’t going to last. Pretty soon it will be back in the 40’s and 50’s here again.

But you still would love to have those temps, right?

Same here with forsythias and magnolias. Even though the forcast for us shows temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get another front cold from nowhere. Let’s hope for best!

No magnolias near me, alas. I know there are some in the area, though. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen any hyacinth in bloom yet.

Enjoy the great weather, it’s early spring in your neck of the woods, here it’s still crocuses and daffodils so far. Forsythias are so cheerful.

My niece texted me today and asked if I could take her toddler daughter out this weekend so she could get some cleaning done. I’ve never watched her alone before and don’t really know what to expect. I almost would rather clean for her instead… almost.
Today I am wearing Guerlain Rose Cherie. I was enjoying it until I got a work related headache.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

I won the Internet again today 🤣 with this beauty!

So I went into the office today (not my usual day) as I may not go in tomorrow on account of the St. Patrick’s Day parade. I mentioned THE parade yesterday to someone at work and he said “What parade?” I literally rolled my eyes because New York City! He had the audacity to say he thinks it’s bigger in Philly. Now I am not into boasting about size, but there really is no comparison!

I think there was a controversial parade last year due to disagreements over who can and cannot march. Whatever it is, I cannot stand inebriated “kids” who can be really obnoxious at all hours. And green beer, fuggedaboudit.

Yesterday while driving I saw a house lit up with lights. At first I thought they still had their Christmas lights up then realized that the lights were all green! I has completely forgot about the holiday.

I wouldn’t say it was jerky, just unaware. Maybe there were many signs for me but 2 of the people work in my same office…the other guy lives in Pennsylvania.

A super busy day, and I’m posting late, so I’ll just note here that SOTD is Un Jardin sur le Toit — after someone mentioned another “Jardin” yesterday, I figured (green) apples and (green) pears would work. I’m liking it today but not loving it. But at least I got to wear it in the sunshine!

Back to work (giving a talk tomorrow afternoon for which I am not yet fully prepared).

Wearing my find at Marshall’s last night, EA Green Tea. It was a smaller store, but still fun to wander around after sitting in a vehicle for 8 days straight.

We arrived home at noon today! So thankful to be back. Still cleaning up but everything is inside. Probably 8 loads of laundry to do starting tomorrow.
