Wednesday scent of the day 3/15

Posted by Robin on 15 March 2023 143 Comments

It’s Hump Day and the Ides of March, plus World Consumer Rights Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert.

Reminder: on 3/17, wear green for St Patrick's Day. (This is a repeat, probably many times over.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Neroli Portofino-both the fragrance, and the body oil. I love this scent a lot. The body care products were fantastic-not sure why they were discontinued. The price of the fragrance is pretty steep too-found mine at Winners a few years ago, and it was pretty expensive there, too. I see some similarities with Escale a Portofino. I love a good cologne that lasts and both of these fit the bill.

We dodged a big snow storm last night-hoping for a early and unseasonably warm spring :) I’m looking forward to reading about what everyone else is wearing today-I love the spirit of the responses here-people are so nice :)

In Clinique Wrappings for the CP.

Cold and horribly windy today. I wish I could stay inside all day, but I have a quick construction site visit scheduled for early this afternoon. In the meantime, I’m getting warm and cozy with my second cup of coffee and a big slice of soda bread.

    Happy Wednesday! ☘️🍀

I am wearing vintage Gucci III, it is a splash eau de toilette, smells fresh, elegant, it doesn’t last long though, maybe I didn’t apply much. I wish i had the parfum.
    Looking forward to the weekend.

      Lovely and sharp greenery.

Just remembering that I bought the bottle on my first visit to the Scent Bar in Hollywood. What a wonderful space to experience!
Thankfully, I do not live nearby or I would have no money whatsoever!!

In the mood for Mitsouko — you know how it is.

Yet another snowpocalypse fizzled out: we were supposed to get a whole lot of snow overnight but there’s what, two inches on the ground? three? We have had *so* little snow this year: it’s really weird. The weather hasn’t been warm overall, just not that much precipitation over the last four months.

My sister has 3 feet of snow and a downed tree at her lake house in Mass, so count yourself lucky! She is lucky too since she is safely in Virginia, but it will cost her eventually.

Ah, I haven’t been to Morrocco in, omg 50 years, and yet every once in a while I will flash back to the markets at Fez or Ourrzazat(sp) or the waterfalls at Agadir, or just along the road watching the sun rise over the eastern deserts, as if it were yesterday. That place really gets under your skin.
And speaking of En Passant, PSA-no affiliation!- I noticed that Costco appears to have POAL, 1.7 oz bottles for sale for $195.00, which I think is a good price, isn’t it? and also En Passant, but it won’t tell me the price of that.
Still not 100%, but it appears Adorable Hubby and I are both in the recovery phase of the COVID infection, we both still have coughing episodes but diminishing in frequency and intensity, and we both have some ambition and less need to nap after every 10 minutes of exertion. Paxlovid sure did it’s magic for both of us. Highly recommend it for anyone that has any high risk justification for asking for it.

My then husband was on a temp assignment from Athens to Rabat where the US Embassy is.
I visited for three months and could travel slowly since I had no real time line other than my visa.
So yes, for me it’s the 35 -40 years ago? My sister has not been, so we will add to list for her. I still have a tiny jeweled bottle of eye kohl. And a tagine!

Robin, you smell divine! Treated myself to a bottle of this (wore it when it was first launched, as I have related on here before) when I spotted the only bottle, which seemed to have been there for a while (!), on the relevant shelf in Harvey Nicks in Edinburgh when I went to a Jimmy Webb gig there last year. I have yet to open it, but couldn’t resist it when I saw it. Hoping to visit our friends in Oak Ridge North, Texas later in late summer so it will be ideal for the anticipated temperatures.

I just finished The Daughters of Madurai-a book I think you would love. Now reading All That is Mine I Carry With Me.

I’m saving wearing o’ the green for Friday and continuing a week of Guerlain with Shalimar edc. I am using a 2011 bottle I bought then, which I keep thinking will go “thunk” but there always seems to be a few more sprays. I’ve added a spritz or two from some vintage partial bottles. One dates from the 1990’s and is called Cologne Spray. It does not last and is very citrus-y so less Shalimar more cologne to me. The edc’s are not my favorite Shalimars. My favorites are probably Philtre and the ’80’-’90’s edt. We are having a second day in the 20 to 40F range, but so much bright and beautiful sunshine!

Sunny and gorgeous yesterday but it was a travel day, which is so much easier in good weather. Rained all night and now looking like the sun will making an extended stay for the day (I hope!)

Had to drive up through Tacoma and Seattle yesterday and got gobsmacked all over again at the stunning beauty of Mount Rainier and the Cascades! All wearing sparkling white snow coats and glistening like the rarest of jewels. Really, just takes your breath away…🌄

Grumble grumble grumble, power’s out again, and it’s out all over the area so guess what priority we are in our remote area. Hope we don’t run out of propane for the generator.

Most of the roads around us are closed. We’ve got more trees down… more stuff to cut and haul. I am so OVER this winter.

I am doing some research on one of the first professional female artists in this country, Margaret Stoddart, who made her reputation as a flower painter and have been trying to locate the species of roses she painted…so all prior to the 1920s, most prior to 1880s when she did a lot of roses. Found one, Anna Olivier , in the cemetery which was cool but not the right time of year for tea roses now. All the old holly hedges are in full red berries, so lovely. And the acorns are dropping. Lots of cyclamen , small touches of purple everywhere. Wearing Wander in the Park for the CP.

I want a perfume that smells like the old Sardo bath oil. It was such great stuff, and I’m slowly going through my last two eBay bottles. My search has dried up. Wah.
Does anyone remember this? Its dominant notes are pine and vanilla, with other greens, a bit of floral, and probably musks. I’m still not very good at deconstructing the notes in a fragrance.
I’ll make do with Zegna Roman Wood, which is fairly close, along with the dear, departed TF Moss Breches.

Or maybe I can re-create it. 😯 I’ll be going to New York in a couple of weeks, and I came across a place called Olfactory NYC. Has anyone heard of it or been there?

I live in NYC and have walked past Olfactory many times but never gone in! It’s in the same area as Scent Bar by Luckyscent and Diptyqye, so I end up getting distracted.

If you visit, please report back! Also happy to toss some perfume shopping options in the city if you’d like.

Thanks, pfsh! I have ScentBar and Diptyque on my list already, so I think I will stop in. 😉

I would be happy to have other perfume shopping tips if you have time. I’ve been before, but there may be something that’s not on my radar, of course! I don’t think I’ll be over to Aedes this time, but who knows?

I enjoy Enfleurage in West Village for essential oil and natural perfumery products. The owners are kind and their offerings fragrant and affordable. Frederic Malle is also nearby, as is Tea & Sympathy, a British joint worth stopping by for tea.

If you’re further uptown, the perfume basement in Bergdorf Goodman is one of my favorite places for perfume shopping. A lot of the fashion brands there also stock their exclusives lines there, e.g. Armani Prive, Hermessence, and there’s always a few indie offerings I haven’t heard of around. Dior, Chanel and LV are nearby if you are interested in their exclusive lines. The sales associates there are friendly and generous with samples.

I highly recommend the Chanel Atelier Beaute perfume experience in SoHo. I’ve been twice! You have to make a reservation and it does cost money, but it’s the only place I know of where you get to smell the whole Chanel perfume collection blind without marketing or names, and you get to take home decants of your top 3 favorite. I discovered a lot of my favorites from my visits there, and its often things that I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise.

Hope that helps! Obviously these are my preferences and maybe other NYC-area folks will chime in with more suggestions ;)

Wow, thanks! 🤩 I have read about Enfleurage but never visited, I guess because it’s more perfume-adjacent than strictly perfume.
I will add the tea stop if I have time. That sounds really nice. 🫖❤️

I am in Penhaligon’s Amarantine again today, slowly falling in love with this one despite the bizzare opening.

I had a stressful morning with work, so I also spritzed on some fleeting but cheerful Hermes Eau de basilic pourpre whose bottle is a gorgeous emerald green, and smells as such despite the ‘purple basil’ in the name. It was gifted to me for my birthday by a dear, sweet friend. I shall be dousing myself with this often.

My SOTD is Zoologist Elephant, with juicy green munched-up tree branches. There are several Zoologist scents that would fit this week’s CP–just sayin’. I didn’t like this one at first but kept wearing it and have used up several samples. I’ve got a new sample going now, but I don’t think I’ll ever buy it. It’s just slightly too weird.

It was colder today and I couldn’t smell any spring air except on myself as I was wearing Vent Vert (it is the 90’s reformulation, I don’t know the original).

Tonight I’m in my comfort blanket of a perfume Weil Suki Essence, plum, dates, cinnamon, and so affordable.

It’s a little gem, the thing is I don’t think it can be smelled in store, so it is purchased blind, still it’s quite a safe buy, the merest whisper of oud but almost undetectable, it’s fairly sweet, the plum and date and cinnamon yummy, from the reviews on Fragrantica many are happy to have discovered it.

Today I’m doing a side by side comparison of Monsillage Eau de Celeri on my left arm and Apoteker Tepe Anabasis on my right arm. I’ve thought these were similar perfumes for a while but this is there first time I’m smelling both at the same time. They are very similar! You definitely get the celery note and more bitterness from Eau de Celeri but there is still bitterness in Anabasis. The Anabasis dry down is more woody that EdC. EdC stays more full on green all the way through. However, they are really so similar you could easily confuse one for the other. I already have a bottle of the VA Monsillage, bought at a great price on eBay a couple years ago, so I don’t need a bottle of Anabasis too.

In other news, I was flabbergasted that I was charged $50 for each of the past 2 months for not having the minimum for an HSBC premier account. This is what happens when NO ONE cares about a relationship. ANYWAY, the email specified that I need to increase my balance by $x, and since I have it in a different financial institution, I got a cashier’s check to open a CD at HSBC. Guess what??? Not only was I already out the $x (because cashier’s check), my $x stopped working for me and will not work for me until it CLEARS and I have to wait until Friday before I can open the CD! I may research this further because something stinks in this whole transaction!

So many institutions have all these hidden ways of grabbing your money- from banks to state parks to grocery stores. I’d call customer service and dispute those charges. I was charged a fee for some stupid thing years ago and I called the branch DIRECTLY and they ended up waiving the fee. If you’re not a repeat offender, most banks will waive the fee. Doesn’t hurt to try…
