Friday scent of the day 3/3

Posted by Robin on 3 March 2023 216 Comments

It's Friday! Birthdays: Jean Harlow, Ira Glass. RIP Wayne Shorter. It's also World Wildlife Day, and the 2023 theme is Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance from a brand making an effort in the arena of biodiversity protection (you should have plenty of choice).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in vintage Yves Saint Laurent Paris, and taking points for YSL's Rewild Our Earth program.

Reminder: 3/10 will be Time Travel Friday...be as creative as you like with the theme. You could wear a perfume that reminds you of a trip you once took, or that brings you back to a prior period of your life for any reason, or that calls to mind a place you'd like to visit in the past or future.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Amur leopard puppy (Panthera pardus orientalis) [cropped] by smerikal at flickr; some rights reserved. [Amur leopards are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.]

No CP (as far as I know) for me today in Boucheron pour Homme EDP, a sophisticated, expensive-smelling floral chypre. It’s one of those scents that, back in the day, I bought at first sniff, without even really thinking about it, because it was so obviously to my taste that it could have been created just for me. Can I really have been wearing it for over thirty years?!

      They are owned by Kering,

    Good morning!!

My bottle of Hermes Un Jardin a Cythere arrived today and I spritzed some on. It is too soon to pass judgment but here is what I am experiencing thus far in the first hour:

It opens up with a blast of lemon, but I get more of the peel than its juice. The bitter quality makes me think of lemon seeds. There is a prominent nuttiness, presumably the fresh pistachio. The pistachio lends an air of creaminess to the whole composition, leaning it ever to slightly towards the gourmand. As it develops, I smell a cool, herbaceous quality that reminds me of rosemary? lavender? The slightly bitter lemon peel sticks around, which I am really enjoying. Excited to see how this develops.

Again, it is too soon to pass judgment, but it is indeed an interesting composition by Christine Nagel and well worth a sniff.

I would say that the herbaceous notes are not too prominent as I smell more of the creamy nuttiness in the air, so it may not scratch the rosemary itch for you. But the lemony herbaceous quality that peeks through is quite lovely!

Most welcome! It’s worth owning a travel spray of IMO.

I have a feeling Jardin a Cythere will be quite divisive among perfume lovers, whose debates I look forward to hearing about.

I was a huge fan of JCE before too, but Nagel is definitely winning my nose over with her recent work!

Oooh this book sounds interesting! Can’t seem to find an English version sadly… mind telling us a bit more about their relationship? I’m so curious about how perfumers work together.

She worked as an apprentice with JCE in the beginning before becoming the perfumer for Hermes. From his writings, he finds her very artistic, talented but they have different visions . Her first months were difficult, because she was always compared to him. JCE is sometimes harsh with her. During an interview, when a journalist asks him about Nagel, he says he couldn’t find the words to describe her. He says his approach is a minimalist and Nagel’s is the opposite.
there is a chapter dedicated to their relationship.

Lush is the brand that got me started on shampoo bars – Jason and the Argan Oils! Given that Jason and the Argonauts is in my top-five movies of all time, I was sure going to try it. Now, because of Lush, I wonder why shampoo in plastic bottles ever became a thing! Admitting, though, that I have/have gone with wash-n-wear hair and don’t color or perm.

For me, having course hair with good body, I find the bar shampoos do not leave me greasy or “flat” and do make me feel clean. Though I do not have thick hair, it is very well-behaved! All my life, any old shampoo will do. :D

I don’t like shampoo bars. I used the argan oil one and it just did not sud (is this a verb?) enough, felt drying and was messy even though I had the shampoo bar container.

Woke up to very chilly temperatures this morning, and had to bribe myself with something warm and cozy to get myself out of bed — so Rebecca Minkoff it is! No CP points that I’m aware of, unless it’s that the glass of the bottle is recyclable? Even that doesn’t really count for me today, because at this point I only have the (presumably non-recyclable) plastic travel spray. But I love the scent (thank you, Vee!) and ordered a small actual bottle yesterday. Prospective points? I think not. 🥴

I feel like this one is going to be a sleeper hit. I’m guessing it didn’t do as well as expected because there are so many discount deals on it now. But 5, 10 years from now it will be like Queen.

It can’t have helped that it was released in 2020, right when people stopped shopping in person and were reluctant to have packages of any kind arriving at their doors. I hope it doesn’t get discontinued and is allowed to have a second chance at popularity. It’s a lovely scent, sort of in the mold of “Gucci Brown” — a bit sweeter and lighter perhaps, but with that same coriander/cardamom spiciness.

Yes, the 2020 release must have been brutal, especially since this was (to my knowledge) the first fragrance release from the brand. So not only were they trying to launch a new perfume but the whole concept that the brand now does perfumes.

I’m doing a combo for the CP. Guerlain has a lot about sustainability on its website and is, as one would expect, focused on protecting the beloved bee.

As such, let’s go with Baiser de Russie from Guerlain around the neck and on the scarf. With some SSS Bee’s Bliss on the wrists. I’m a floral sweetie today.

We ended up having lovely weather yesterday although the breeze was a bit nippy. Sunshine all day and I was very productive! Got the last seat cover on, which required Herculean effort as they are customized for each models seat configuration and they’re lined with some kind of foamy stuff that makes them almost impossible to shimmy up/down/around the seats. Got the inside all vacuumed and Armor All’d, too. Had a lovely visit from some deer friends right out out back door in the afternoon! 🦌

Not feeling any connection to the CP as I don’t know of any fragrance brand that actively helps the environment. Many perfume ingredients are tested on animals, too. I know some brands have started getting away from that but there’s a long history between fragrance and environmental/animal abuse. Just my .02 cents.

I’m at the vet right now so I’m commando but I’ve been craving SSS Forest Walk, so that’s what I’ll spray when I’m done here.

    Happy weekend to all!

CP participation has included an application of The Body Shop’s almond milk body butter, topped with a spritz of Guerlain’s Rose Cherie. Hoping this will help fortify my mood against today’s gloom and high winds. Can we just say goodbye to March and leapfrog directly to May? 😉

No CP for me, still doing ‘cozy’: Mugler Ambre Redoutable. OK so it’s a pretty loud cozy, but still. We have sun today, but snow/rain returns tonight until forever (thru Thursday at least, so the NWS says). SIGH. Still no power, either. 8th day of no power. SIGH. I’m wearing Goldfield and Banks silky woods, the agar wood is sourced from plantations in Queensland, so is sustainable. On the other hand, you could argue that the land itself is colonised or stolen, and that Banks was no saint. But points for not destroying trees grown in the wild.
Raining here and very dark, waiting for sunrise. We have been having warm, dry weather recently and so it’s nice the break the drought. All the paddocks look parched and the plants are really struggling.

I didn’t know it was possible to grow agarwood in Australia! SE Asia and my home country produces quite a bit of oud where we are thick in the tropics.

Hope the rain provides much needed hydration for your lands <3

I’m in VC&A Bois d’Iris because irisjasmine mentioned Dior Bois d’Argent and I find the two very similar. On VC&A’s site they say that they find nature an “endless source of inspiration,” which is very nice, but certainly not the same as supporting biodiversity efforts. Anyway, it smells very good and I’m happy it’s Friday. Funny, even being retired I still look forward to weekends. It’s a different energy out there or something.

I had to dig a bit for the CP this week, I’ve chosen Frankincense by Neal’s Yard Remedies. According to their wiki, Neals Yard was the first company certified by the Soil Association, and the first to be certified as carbon neutral. They have also received awards for sustainability and use Fairtrade Foundation ingredients.

Frankincense is very simple and lovely, but light. I will have to top up or layer later in the day.

For today’s theme of wildlife: I have been supporting Center for Biological Diversity, International Fund for Animal Welfare, International Animal Rescue and many other organizations for years but subject that is close to my heart is the plight of bats and bees and the Protect the Pollinators campaign, so my choice for today is an all natural perfume company that has a thing for bees 🐝 : Roxana Illuminated Perfume and their scent called To Bee, a warm and fuzzy perfume that smells like an inside of a bee hive and is made with “tincture of feral honey comb from different bee rescues”. I had a small vial of it and I was recently planning to buy a bigger bottle only to find it was out of stock, but I managed to get several new little jars of Roxana’s solid perfumes to try. They contain tinctures of different plants and are made with their own or locally sourced beeswax and beeswax from Roxana’s own hives.

Applied 10 Corso Como this morning without a thought in the world for the CP. Still, I thought surely there must be some overlap. Well if there is, I couldn’t find it. To demonstrate my total fail, I quote its founder Carla Sozzani, who apparently still reads a printed paper every morning. She says, “Paper is an addiction.” Nope. I couldn’t find a link to biodiversity at all. Last year, CC was taken over by another company called Tiziana Fausti–came up w nada there too.

Ah. Well-spotted. I saw that article but skimmed the first para is all. She is still alive, or at least was alive last month, if the article I found with the quote about paper (and reading) is anything to go by:

        https://www.anothermag.com/design-living/14665/carla-sozzani-10-corso-como-print-collection-interview-milan

She says, ““Paper is a passion, a kind of disease, an addiction. There’s something that happens when you touch the pages. In a book you can have all the five senses, which is very rare, and you certainly don’t find it in the computer. The touch, the smell, the sound and sight. Taste, even! You want to eat a book, don’t you? When I get into somebody’s home and I see no books, I think, what kind of person doesn’t have books? That’s strange! It’s a big part of my life.”

I note her love of Dostoyevsky, but the author says that in a previous interview she cited Persuasion as her favorite book–a favorite of mine as well.

This article is worth its weight (if it were in print :-) ) for the photos alone. Her aesthetic is so pronounced.

We’ve been waiting for a whole bunch of snow today but it looks like the curve changed direction and we may get none at all, which is fine with me. Our snowdrops are blooming all over and tulips and daffys are just starting to come up, too. 👍. But it’s still a nice day for a cozy, warm scent with a bit of spice (cinnamon, nutmeg) and a bit of cocoa or chocolate, so for today’s cp the closest I can get is Pacifica ‘s Mexican Cocoa edt. Layered over BBW’s Hot Cocoa & Cream bath products, mmmmm!

Pacifica’s website says: “We are, and always have been 100% vegan and cruelty-free. It’s who we are, and have been from the beginning, over 20 years. We are PETA Certified and do not use animal products, bi-products or condone any testing on animals anywhere in any country.”

Our new classic film series started this week at my library, featuring the famous German director, Ernst Lubitsch, about whom I know nothing but am eager to learn. The first film of the series last night last night was ‘Rosita,’ a 100-year old silent film (which does not stream and is difficult to find anywhere) featuring Mary Pickford as a street singer in Seville, Spain who offends the King. Accompanied by a wonderful organist, it was full of twists and turns and strong, delightful female characters – a real delight, and it amazed me that so much could be ‘said’ without words. I doubt anything else I could see this weekend would top this, and I’m looking forward to next week’s program. ❤️ my library!

I hope there’s a weekend delight in store for all NST’ers!

I am wearing Jour d’Hermes this morning. Hermes has lofty biodiversity and sustainability goals (including ending poverty and hunger!) but as they still use genuine leather in their products I am thinking that a lot of their spiel is aspirational. But I’ll take the CP points!

Ah, Ira Glass! He’s been my weekly companion for the past 19 years or so, ever since I got my first iPod in high school.

I’m CP-compliant in Zoologist Macaque, which I do not like and which joins the pile of samples to give away.

I will be the last one standing, I hope, with a working iPod!

The US does not seem to throw around the term “National Treasure” the way that the UK does, but Ira Glass is a National Treasure.

Winding down a week of Lush perfumes for the CP with Sikkim Girls. Mmm I love this spicy floral. It’s one of those well blended perfumes where you can’t pick out now except maybe in the first couple minutes after you spray it.

Busy day of work today. Thank goodness it’s Friday!

The promised rain arrived here about an hour ago. Right now it isn’t bad, but later on tonight a wild deluge and tropical storm level wind is expected to roll on in. Yuck.

LOVE the leopard pic today Robin! 😍

SOTD = LUSH Lust Perfume. Yowza! Two sprays is plenty with this one! I get a napthalene/mothball top note with this monster jasmine perfume. I like the weird notes that BWFs can have sometimes, though.

The weather has not turned bad yet in these here parts but it is coming.

You must be a jasmine lover to like the mothball smell!

I got my haircut this morning so my head feels lighter! The bakery that I like at the same outdoor mall closed recently 😞. I don’t think it got much foot traffic but I hope the owner finds a buyer for her business.

I made it to and back from Trader Joe’s in plenty of time before the bad weather. I went there to get two main things: TJ Pork Shumai (dumplings) and caramel chips. I scored with the pork shumai which comes in a 9-pack and for $3.79, it’s a great meal if you add a side of veggies. The caramel chips were nowhere to be found and one of the workers said it was seasonal…I’m thinking it could be a supply issue as well since Wegmans had been out of it for a long time. Anyway, I know what to do towards the end of the year.

Sending closed-bakery sympathy. Our little town had a fabulous French bakery (the croissants!! that crust on the quiche!!) until the owner’s graduate student husband finished his degree and they moved. Here’s hoping your baker can sell her business and reopen near you.

Shumai sound delish! And YAY for the haircut!

That’s a bummer your little local bakery closed. There seem to be a lot of them calling it quits as of late.

Given that I rarely look at the various brands’ websites, I really didn’t expect so many of them to parade around some kind of biodiversity project …

So, this morning I still racked my brain thinking I might not even find anything remotely suitable. The best I felt I could do was another Lush – Devil’s Nightcap, to be more precise – which not only seemed to at least come close to the theme due to the firm’s supposed commitment to animal welfare, but which by the character of its sent also conjures up and thereby preserves the habitat of a whole other sort of “wildlife” – one made up of trolls and gnomes and goblins and elves and fairies and nymphs and all those other creatures of folklore.

I took a sick day today and mostly slept again. I am on antibiotics now so should be feeling back to my normal tired self any day now. Lol.
This morning I put on a bit of Aura since it had been mentioned recently. It’s still going strong. This was made under Clarins so I assume I am cp appropriate?
