Wednesday scent of the day 3/1

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2023 189 Comments

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Adiós February! It’s also Hump Day and Zero Discrimination Day. Birthdays: Frédéric Chopin, Lytton Strachey, Glenn Miller, Ralph Ellison, Robert Lowell, Harry Belafonte, Roger Daltrey. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm voting for an early spring with L’Artisan Jacinthe des Bois.

Reminder: 3/3 is World Wildlife Day. This year's theme: Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation. Wear a fragrance from a brand making an effort in the arena of biodiversity protection (you should have plenty of choice).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Pygmy Rabbit_Caribou-Targhee NF_USDA FS [cropped] by Intermountain Forest Service, USDA Region 4 Photography at flickr; public domain. [Some genetically distinct sub-populations of pygmy rabbits are endangered; read more here.]

I remembered the rabbits this morning!

Bit of snow this morning and a *lot* more coming tomorrow: I’m at home doing household chores in Alfred Sung Encore, which showed up in 1990 at the tail end of those Poison-inspired tuberose florientals. This might actually (heresy) be better than Poison — less lethal, certainly, gorgeously warm and caressing — but it didn’t have the style or the advertising budget that Dior lavished on its opulent creation.

Gosh, sorry about the snow! I’ve never tried that one, but if it’s close to Poison I bet you smell great!

Rabbit, rabbit, RABBIT!! It’s March!! (we made it Lillyjo) My weather person said our average daily temp in March is 43, I will take it!
I’m in Zoologist Deer Musk. Musk Deer? It’s pretty nice, but I don’t need more than my sample. Idk, it must be just me but I’m kind of weirded out by those animal names and silhouettes and haven’t tried many from this line.

Today’s my Friday because I’m headed to a conference out of town tomorrow. Excited both for the conference and for the hotel room to myself.

That is my fave of the Zoos, but I too find it difficult to disassociate the graphics and names from many of the scents. I think the designs are beautiful, and the packaging! Nevertheless, hard as I try, can’t talk myself into trying a perfume called Cow Extrait.

I have been in a few crowded settings where I have worn FM Iris Poudre. I have also worn light scents by Jo Malone as they are not usually offensive. For example, Wood Sage and Sea Salt and Nectarine and Honey are both pretty easy in large settings.

I never remember the rabbits because that isn’t a tradition I’m familiar with, except for NST. However, I just took my winter decor off my door and windowsill in my office and now I have rabbit and bird figurines, and a dogwood wreath (faux). Today I grabbed Demeter Tomato, which is one of my top three Demeter scents.

I’d love to do a week of favourite Demeter scents. I don’t have any because they are not available where I live but feel they might be relatively safe cheap thrill, blind buys so would love to be guided by others. I did have condensed milk once, and bees wax and paperback and they were all good fun.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit and I am wearing another set of all natural perfumes that these little creatures might approve of: Aftelier Cepes et Tuberose, and Florascent Medina. The wonderful dirt accord in C&T, the buttery tuberose and the rich benzoin drydown are especially great in parfum concentration which I dabbed on this morning. And the new version of Medina is missing some of the powerful saffron – orris – vetiver punch it had before, but it’s still a very nice and earthy patchouli scent. Whenever I wear it, I am reminded of how stripped down, barebone and cleaned up the patchouli note is in most commercial perfumes and how nice it is to have small indie brands to remind me of what it can be in its original form. I may spritz some Providence Perfume Co Rose Boheme, an intense rose and patch combo, later on, to compliment this set.

Patchouli seems to be having a moment, but it is Cleaned Up Patchouli, which seems rather beside the point.

Hah! My mother must have told me she hates patchouli at least five times in the two hours we were sniffing perfumes together on Sunday. When I showed her which ones listed patchouli, or fractions of patchouli (or whatever that is called), she declared that she found all of them awful!

            Excellent!

I think of myself as not liking patchouli, despite liking a few old school patchouli-heavy scents, and these days, it’s hardly worth noticing patchouli in the notes. Plus I think there are molecular fractions of patch even in many scents where its not listed.

Happy March! Four sprays of Coromandel again because I felt like it. I am in the office today so it’s a bit bolder of a choice.

This is a long stretch, but I was wondering if anyone here has Guerlain Iris Ganache? I love iris and am so curious to smell this gourmand take on it. If so, would you be willing to swap or sell me a small 1-2ml decant? I have the following rare & discontinued perfumes I’d be happy to swap for:

    – Chanel Egoiste Cologne Concentree, a deeper version of Egoiste with sandalwood to die for
    – Penhaligons Amaranthine, weird tropical banana leaf and ylang-ylang, also with a creamy sandalwood base
    – Vintage Guerlain Mitsouko parfum
    – Vintage Chanel No 19 parfum
    – and several others, happy to share!

In that blackberry muddled cocktail, Muresque by DSH. It goes on like a powerhouse, but doesn’t last long—or at least I hope so as I have already reapplied it this morning and I don’t want to kill anyone if I go out in public. Death by blackberry cocktail bomb.

I love love love wild blackberries, especially picking them on the side of the road–the stained fingers and tongues, even the scratches on wrists and legs from leaning into bushes.

As for my mum, she enjoyed herself but I think was a little overstimulated. She was pretty tired when she left, but I believe she felt lavished in attention. She took home decants of the following–mostly unchallenging florals and woods, with the exception of the Neela Vermeire: Nuit de Cellophane, She Was an Anomaly, JM’s Orange Blossom, Paris-Venise, Little Flower, Santal 33, Promenade des Anglais, and Pichola.

I learned about Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit when my daughter was in grade school. I think today is the first time since NST started doing it that I remembered before I dropped by, and I’m oddly semi-excited to have done so.

Scent: Zara Fleur d’Oranger on one arm and Amalfi Sunray on the either. My hot take is they start out with different topnotes and dry down pretty much identically. Applied them maybe an hour ago (maybe less), and they are fading rapidly – but I think that’s kind of expected. Both are ok, glad I only bought rollerballs.

Scent for later: I’m thinking green. Spring-ish weather is triggering cravings for orange blossom or green scents.

Oh that’s so interesting, have never heard of anyone doing it in the wild. Where was she in grade school?

And I know what you mean. I do not consider myself superstitious and do the rabbits here just for fun and as a way of marking time passing, but I feel victorious when I remember.

I pulled out the last of the samples from the chocolate & cocoa set today, which is Pierre Guillaume Aqaysos. So far I’m not getting any cocoa at all though supposedly it’s there and may make an appearance later. Very citrus / pepper so far.

After an unexpected snowstorm early yesterday morning, we’re supposed to get more snow tonight. So we’re in this cycle of heavy, wet snow, then a bunch of it melting off, then more heavy, wet snow. Doesn’t meteorological spring begin today? Someone send it here!

Wearing Abel Pause. I think Abel donates to the planet (1%) , and provides meals through Mary’s Meals charity plus opts for sustainable ingredients, non toxic packaging ( inks), biodegradable card, carbon neutrality, vegan …. So fits the CP though you need about 15 sprays and need to hold your wrist to your nose , and fades quickly. I like the scent though, mimosa, and bought it . Can top up with mimosa and cardamon later.

Sunny but COLD and WINDY today! Tomorrow is supposed to bring more snow/frozen mix/rain. Yech!

Still credentialing (on-line testing) for work and this is the first time I’ve had tests all about using the computer program and NOTHING medically oriented…soon a robot will be doing my job! 🤖

I’m going with SL Un Bois Vanille today because someone mentioned it in the comments yesterday. One of my all time favorites and my bottle is about half empty.

T-Rex seems to have hurt her back so I’ve been carrying her up and down the steps into the camper and lifting her up to the bed at bedtime, up to her fluffy bed on the dinette seat, plus in and out of the truck. It’s a workout, let me tell you!😅 Hoping with a little “back rest” it will resolve in a few days. She’s still playful and eating well, but is unable to do her morning doggie yoga “downward dog” stretches without yelping. ☹️

Happy to kick February to the curb. Though so far March is not much better. This is day 7 with no power. At least it’s sunny, though everything here is iced over at the moment. Hope it melts later. We are supposed to have a few ok days, then snow returns Saturday until forever.

Husband got out to get a few groceries yesterday, and we got mail delivered for the first time in a week! and UPS! though FedEx wimped out.

No CP for me today, sticking with ‘cozy’. SOTD is Arabian Oud Kalemat.

    Hi all!

Sitting in front of a roaring fireplace. Every time the Mr. puts it on, I don’t want to do anything but watch it. I’m not getting much done. Snow remnants on the ground are pretty.

Wearing Snow Fairy. Lush does a lot for charity.

It’s been ages since we used our fireplace. It’s a gas one, and I don’t think we have fired it up since 2009. But we used to use it a lot, and the cats we had back then LOVED it.

New project will start in about two weeks, gives me time to finish some pushed aside tasks, get new drivers license ( has to be in person) and get my crown finished.

Who can give me their opionion of Jorum Spiritcask?

SOTD post shower will be something deeply ambery to combat the continued cold in SoCal.

W00t! I went straight to a large sample! It is boozy in just the right amount. I would say this is the 2nd best of Jorum perfumes, after Trimerous. You’ll see that I just copied and pasted the notes from Fragrantica but I can honestly say it is well blended other than the booze.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me, going home for a week after Seattle, and then flying out again to Hawaii! We are celebrating Mr E’s retirement, yay! We are on Oahu and meeting up with my Alaskan brother and SIL, what a gift. Then a few days on Maui by ourselves.

SotD is Chantecaille Tiare, which it will be for the remainder of the trip. I re-purchased this one in Honolulu, since I discovered while packing that my slightly-vintage bottle had gone off. 😣 The current one is almost as good, though.
I’ve been looking for a plumeria perfume but haven’t seen many at all. Does anyone have a frag with that note prominent?
    Happy Hump Day, all!

Plumeria also goes by the name of frangipani and there’s a lot of perfumes with that name. I like the Ormond Jayne one, but I tried it a long time ago and don’t own it. I never got the chance to do any kind of direct comparison to a flower.

Have a great time in Hawaii, AnnE! Much nicer weather than the mainland at present.

No rabbits for me, but no worries. I have pretty good luck without them. But I am kind of astonished that it’s March already. My time perception is kind of like those movie montages where the calendar pages go flying by to denote time passing. So fast! Anyway I am wearing LPRN Black Perfecto, a decant from a friend. I like the cherry note but the rest of it is undistinguished to my nose.

I layered Mandorlo di Sicilia (bottle almost finished) with Passage d’Enfer, it worked and was a long-lasting combo, quite sweet though. Tonight I am in Jean Patou Heritage Collection l’Heure Attendue, when I want a light amber I reach for it but it’s quite resinous with an almost animalic aspect today, interesting, I probably sprayed more than usual.

That layering combo sounds great! I find that incense notes can help with too-sweetness quite well, but perhaps the sweetness of Mandorlo was too much. I swapped away my bottle of it many years ago.

Oh yes they played so well together, you’re absolutely right about incense, I think, it’s what happened is that I oversprayed Mandorlo a lot hence the extra sweetness in the combo.

SotD Shalimar edc, modern version. I am very close to a FB thunk on this one: just in time to read rumors of its being discontinued. But I have several vintage and vintage-ish versions. Shalimar is always Shalimar to my nose and I like it. I have an edt that I like best, and also a fan of Philtre and Souffle Intense. I’ve tried two versions of the parfum, and it is probably the version I like least. (Dodges tomatoes)

      Claimed. Taking the mojo.

Another near thunk? You are the 3rd.

Well, the No.19 is almost near thunk; certainly by yearend. The 28 La Pausa is truly within several (4 or fewer) wearings if I can only get to the bottom of the bottle!

Trying Nobile 1942 Rudis today. This is an oddball, but I like it. I get fresh grapes, incense, and a fruity leather note that I like. I get dried fruit note as well, and it is definitely dried fruit, not stewed. Sorta kinda like a fruited version of Bottega Veneta.

Tea today was a mix of Clipper Ship’s chocolate puer, vanilla bourbon, and burnt sugar and it was tasty.

I had to be a jerk today at work and call out another department in front of some significant higher-ups for bringing us to the brink of an important external deadline expiring this afternoon. They have had months and were warned multiple times of the priority and consequences, but they still hadn’t done what they needed to do as of this morning. It was my last option but I still feel cruddy about it.

You shouldn’t feel like crap for calling out someone else’s BS!

You had to do it. No sense beating yourself up over others refusal to do their job. They shouldn’t need warnings or reminders of consequences. Just do their job.

      💜

Actually, it was the other team that was a jerk and you just called them out on it. Good on you.
