Thursday scent of the day 2/16

Posted by Robin on 16 February 2023 132 Comments

It’s Almost-Friday and National Almond Day. Birthdays: Henry Adams, Richard Ford, plus happy 66th to LeVar Burton! RIP Raquel Welch. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm still on vacation, but today I'm scenting a fabric I am wearing quite a bit this week,  summer-weight cotton, which happens to go quite nicely with the only scent I brought along: Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum.

Reminder: 2/17 will be Textile Friday...wear a perfume that makes you think of a textile–linen, silk, raw silk, velvet, corduroy, damask, wool poplin, cashmere, polyester, swimsuit fabric, etc. Suggested by Oakland Fresca.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Iris Top Blue Mixed Floral Block Print from Ophelia & Indigo, currently marked down to $62.50 (and I think they've got a special for 20% off that as well).

For a doctor’s appt. today I am wearing Pomelo Paradis, which always makes me smile. If it were paired with a material, I would think of a cotton dress with a big tropical print in citrus colors.

It’s a surprising 7°C out there and we have the windows open for some gorgeous fresh air, but it won’t last, of course: overnight will come last week redux, with snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets into Saturday. What fun we have! I hope you are enjoying your warm weather, Robin.

It’ll be spring in a few weeks, so I’m wearing my one completely seasonal fall-winter scent until it gets put away, Yves Rocher Nature Millénaire Pour Homme, which smells exactly like autumn. (On March 20th I’ll replace it with YR Homme Nature, which smells exactly like spring.)

We are REALLY enjoying warm weather, thanks! Lovely that you at least can get some fresh air before the crud arrives.

It boggles my mind that 7 °C is warm where you are. That’s what it was here a couple hours ago, and I considered it frigid.

Atlantic Canadians have a very different perspective on temperature! When it hits 12° I am out and about in short-sleeved shirts: I think Newfoundlanders don’t feel the cold like normal people, or that’s my story, anyway.

Same for West Coast — except in my experience we do it with shorts. Shorts are not uncommon when it’s 5°. Granted, they are paired with fleece up top, but we do love our shorts.

At 5C Canadians put on shorts. At 10C they go out without a tshirt (the men of course). I’m speaking from personal observation in Montréal.

My brain fails to process this. At 10C, I’ll exchange my heavy winter coat for the light one. (But I won’t go to my fall coat until it’s 15C.) I am not meant to be a Canadian.

You know I love books…into todays paper the Codex Sassoon is being auctioned off at Sotheby’s and I saw a photo in the paper of this old text. So cool. Wondering if I could pop over and see it in person.

Did you try spraying in another room to see if you could smell it?

I am going to do the 8 sprays tomorrow. For some reason I think of it more like satin than velvet, but that’s just me.

Yes I sprayed a piece of paper. Left it in the room and when I came back I couldn’t smell it.

However-when I went to buy my foundation today-I asked the sales associate (whom I have known for 13 years) can you come close to me and tell me if you smell anything? And I stuck out my neck and she said..yes..you are wearing portrait of a lady. Its smells so good on you. LOL

I believe we need Coin-op, (who if I’m not mistaken, is the POAL resident expert) to weigh in about the difference between earlier and later versions re: POAL potency. My memory of early POAL is that it was definitely stronger.

It sounds like a combination of your nose getting fatigued and a possibly lighter version of PoAL. It’s been a while since I have smelled it.

I wonder if your bottle would get stronger if it sat around for a while?

Wearing Hypnotic Poison today. In thinking of a matching textile, I would say bunny fur. I had a pair of white bunny fur earmuffs when I was a little girl and I loved them so much that I slept with them. HP has that soft fluffiness.

The CP this week is a brain-tickler. My favorite perfume moments often arrive when I wear an outfit twice and a lingering fragrance greets me. But I never thought about the fabric itself as having a scent. SotD 24 Faubourg, which evokes a soft worsted wool, maybe made into a dark coat dress and accented with, of course, a beautiful silk scarf.

I’m wearing another pull from my box of minis. This one is Regine’s by Parfums Regine. I remember being intrigued by an article on Fragrantica and buying a mini from ebay. I can’t remember wearing it before. It is one of those that when it wafts up from your skin you think “pretty”, but when you put your nose close to your skin to sniff there is something a little off-putting.

I’ve been on a Patchouli bender this week and here’s my CP tie in –

Silk apparently used to be wrapped in patchouli leaves as a bug repellant because of its camphoraceous smell. The elegant ladies who purchased the silk became enamored with the smell of patchouli and thus began a love affair (for some) with the scent.

    My week’s line-up so far:
    Monday – Profumum Roma Patchouly
    Tuesday – Reminiscence Patchouli
    Wednesday – Diptyque Tempo
Today – POAL (twins with Ltsg, maybe even the number of sprays. I agree that it seems lighter than it did when it was first released)
    Tomorrow…???

Although I’m wearing a soft flannel shirt, I sprayed lots of Riviera Verbena, which seems more a linen scent. It’s really hanging in there, scentwise, about five hours later.

For those of you commenting on ONLY xxx number of days till spring, be aware that spring doesn’t really show up in my neck of the woods till late April, if that. 🙄☹️.

I love the smell of thick canvas, and in particular canvas that has been rained on and then starts to steam a little under the heat of a fierce summer sun…tents, beach chairs. The smell has a hint of wheat so I am going with Miller Harris La Pluie but Epidor might be better.

Still moving and even though I made good progress yesterday, I feel like I’m so behind. Getting a bit stressed juggling two vehicles.

I’m wearing Enslaved by Roga from a split today. It’s soft, silky, and furry but very refined so I can’t really think of a material that fits. Maybe some new iteration of flannel silk…

I’m in Glossier You. It’s my Friday and it’s snowing out. We’ve gotten quite a bit this winter. Will have to think about what to do for the cp tomorrow.
We finished watching Chernobyl on HBO max last night, and that was equal parts fascinating and frightening. It happened the spring of my senior year in high school, and although I remember it being on the news and knew that a nuclear power plant had blown up, I didn’t pay attention to much beyond that. Because, well, I was 18 and concerned with graduating, heading off to college and that seemed like a world away. Then of course we fell into the rabbit hole of watching YouTube videos of the abandoned buildings and city. Now that is some spooky stuff.

Happy Friday Eve! I have been out of the perfume loop the past week. My daughter came down w/ strep last Thursday but is on the mend. You forget the wonder and miracle that antibiotics are.🙏🏻 I finally completed some projects for a 2/15 work deadline as well. So I feel like I am just getting back to normalcy…which is sadly always temporary.😅 ehaeheh

I have been testing lots of samples from Luckyscent in the past couple weeks. I used to hate dabber sample vials but I feel like I have finally made my peace with them now.😆

I placed an order w/ Ulta this and week and blind bought a travel spray of Libre Le Parfum, which is supposed to be the most vanilla-y of the flankers I think and Nemat Vanilla Musk. I haven’t tried either and am trying not to blind FBs but travel sprays and rollerball don’t count. :) I also bought a travel spray of the Burberry eau Elixir which I did sample at a store a week or two ago. I kind of loved and hated it all at once. ehaeheh it’s a synthetic strawberry gourmand. I read a review on Fragrantica calling it a strawberry milkshake and that’s pretty apt.

I am not sure what’s on my “to buy” list but I am wondering about Presidents’ Day sales and codes now.😇

Bummer that mini She-ra came down with strep. I have unpleasant childhood memories of getting that!

Smoothie is apples and yogurt, We’ve been having a sunny and mild week for the season.

I chose Worth Dans la Nuit this morning, it’s a lovely, vintage dark blue bottle and I’ve always loved the scent, even more than Je Reviens I think, at least I wear it more often. Tonight it’s PG Louanges Profanes which has something in common with l’Heure Bleue but not a dupe, it is a favorite.

I’m in DSH’s Avocado Toast today. It does have a whole wheat bread thing going on and I really like it. I guess I would pair it with something wholesome like organic cotton pajamas.

It has an avocado leaf note, if you’re familiar with that scent. My husband gave me a rare “You smell really good”. So that’s a plus!

I am still in my bathrobe. So I smell like a bunch a things. But I have a cold so cannot smell much of anything.

Took a Covid test last night since I did actually get on a plane and go to Florida and see real people and come back. It was negative, so just going with a cold.

No project offers yet. Taxes done and money back from California (a first) to pay for that crown I need replaced. I will take that as a win.

Watched Banshees of Innershinin of however spelled. Strange but I enjoyed it. Especially Colin Farrell and his eyebrows.

    Hello all!

I’m in Idole de Lubin today, maybe velvet or fine corduroy. I could smell Giacobetti play with incense one hundred times and never get tired. I do wish I had a sample of the EdT to compare but I’m happy with the current formula.

It’s cold for probably the last time here in Houston and I’m loving it!

    Have a great day everyone.

I pulled Rien out of the ELdO sample box today, and it pairs well with plastic…just getting a strong artificial smell from the top notes. It’s definitely more than “nothing” on me…not quite a scrubber yet, but I’m hoping it’ll settle into something else.

It’s settling into an iris with a plastic note, so I can live with it for now. :)

I got something completely different with Rien. A black leather motorcycle jacket inside a big shop of leather goods. No plastic and no iris at all on me.

Weird how perfumes can vary between people!

I get that way more from Tom of Finland. But whoa, very little leather from Rien on me. It’s settled into a mellow iris, finally. The opening was just…not good. I’ll have to try again on a different day.

It is amazing how things can vary! One of the mysteries of perfume, I guess.

    Quick post until later.

I have one freebie package consisting of La Mer stuff and other GWP from Nordstrom and maybe from elsewhere too. Regular commenters and U.S. only. Same caveats as in if it gets lost in the mail I cannot replace it.

I am going to the post office either tomorrow or Saturday so if you dibs here, please send me an email with your mailing info even if you know I already have it.

May I please call dibs? (if I still count as a regular commenter) I’ve been wanting to try out some La Mer stuff in order to find out if I want to shell out the big bucks to get full-sized products.

SOTD is a sample of G&B’s Island Lush. I get mostly spicy fresh ginger syrup, pliable leather, and sandalwood, with some damp vetiver. The leather has a stone fruit note to it (prune, maybe?). Nutmeg comes out in the drydown. It reminds me of another leather frag that I’ve sampled in the past 6 months or so, but I can’t put my finger on which. It seems misnamed. I get neither island or lushness from this. This is drinking ginger beers while sitting in a soft, worn leather club chair at the stylish apartment of your cooler-than-you-and-forever-a-bachelor older brother who you suspect smokes clove cigarettes when no one else is around.

Tea today was Chocolate Puer again. So tasty.

Sprayed on Dior Rose Gipsy but it smelled a bit sharp, so I layered Wicked Good over it. Lately a lot of florals are smelling sharp to me. Not sure if it’s my nose or the trends in perfume aromachemicals.

SOTD = layering of Frederic Malle Iris Poudre and Chanel 1957 EDP

It’s a good layering combination except Iris Poudre overwhelmed the all musk 1957 and I did not get Iris Poudre’s fabulous drydown. It’s definitely a good combination but I think I will enjoy each one more separately.

Today’s my Friday – woohoo! I have some errands to run but nothing packed to the gills at all! I may tackle another section, perhaps a bigger one than the last time, but no pressure at all.

Super late today! Spooky kitty had an afternoon vet appointment. Unfortunately, she has lost more weight and is now under 5 pounds.

Oh boy, 5 pounds sound really tiny although perhaps kittens can be tiny and still be ok. My sister’s Havanese is 9-10 pounds fully grown. He barks like he is 100 pounds…

J-has your vet said anything about Prednisolone? Our kitty became way thin like Spooky and could not keep her food down. Our vet put her on just 2.5 milligrams of Prednisolone and almost overnight she quit barfing and went back to being the little chow hound-cat we knew. The dose is half of an already tiny pill. Easy to give. Hope you get some answers in any case.

I hope everything is OK with Spooky Kitty. If the vet puts her on prednisolone, let me know. My Sammy was on it for years but hated the taste, so we would put the half pill inside gel caps so that she couldn’t taste it. That worked really well. I still have a ton of gel caps that I can send you.
