Tuesday scent of the day 2/7

Posted by Robin on 7 February 2023 219 Comments

It's Tuesday and World Rose Day (one of them, anyway). Birthdays: Charles Dickens, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Sinclair Lewis, Eubie Blake. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Maria Candida Gentile Elephant & Roses. Tea this morning is Kusmi Tsarevna.

Reminder: on 2/10, wear a fragrance with rose, if you have one. (This is a repeat from 2016).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is the Marie-Antoinette Pink & Gold Teapot ("Hand-painted with 24 ct gold, this teapot is adorned with a delicate handmade rose on the cover and can be paired with matching accessories"), $730 at Villari.

    Rose 🌹 Prick

Happy birthday to Dickens- the library last year acquired Dicken’s glasses and they were in display during the holidays.

The coffee shop yesterday was a hit, I went back this morning and brought my son to try some of their pastries.

That coffee shop looked cool 😎

Were you able to connect with Sarah?

Going to the bookstore today. My stepdaughter reads a lot of nonfiction and she really did enjoy Spare. I may have to breakdown and get it.

Robin-they are really cool actually. The are the type that sit on the bridge of your nose, they fold in half and fit into a small leather case! NYPL has many interesting holdings for Dickens.

Well I have few roses perfumes. One is terribly obnoxious with sillage 8 miles wide. So having woke up in the night with a blaring headache I decided on the ancient and dwindling sample of Chanel 22. Here is what the Chanel site says —

“Created in 1922, this seductive scent is a light variation of the legendary N°5 fragrance developed a year earlier by Gabrielle Chanel and Ernest Beaux, the first Director of CHANEL Fragrance.
Delicately fashioned with a smooth, tender and powdery accord of tuberose, rose and orange blossom, N°22 resonates with an absolute femininity.”

The tuberose and orange blossom must be faint or have flown off over the years of sitting in my bottle because I usually dislike those in any discernible amount of those but this is LOVELY. I always think the next exclusive I buy will be Bois de Isle but this is really nice.

SOTD is Chanel Egoiste, but the vintage early 90s version. I find it much more rose forward than the current formulation, as well as a creamier, more prominent sandalwood dry down. Delicious stuff.

If anybody is curious, here’s a useful article by Raiders of the Lost Scent on identifying vintage versions that I used: http://raidersofthelostscent.blogspot.com/2015/04/chanel-egoiste.html. Ebay prices are high as usual, but affordable bottles do pop up every now and again.

It’s such a good resource! I hope ROTLS never goes away. Vintage perfumes are so fun to dive into, I can’t get enough of it. Always fun to obsess over a new vintage love, as frustrating as it can get if they are particularly rare 😂

There’s just something primally appealing about shiny shiny gold, isn’t there?
A few years ago, the large Greek Orthodox cathedral near my house added a huge new tower with a gold dome on top. It must truly be gold leaf on there because there’s certain times of the day when I am driving down that street and the sun glints off it and it’s so darn shiny and gorgeous! Sadly, I can never manage to get a good photo of it because I’d have to dash into traffic on a busy street and it’s probably not a good idea given my cane and my limp.

Because pyramus mentioned it recently, sought out my vintage Joy edt splash. Purchased at an estate sale, suspect it’s even older than a 1980s formulation. It’s quite a sumptuous rose/jasmine, only requiring a judicious application. Yesterday I walked by the property that had the estate sale. That house was torn down several years ago. The family who purchased the lot turned it into a community vegetable garden, but they in turn sold it and now a new house is going up. Ch ch changes….

Very happy today – my mom was discharged from the hospital last night and is happy as a clam back at home. I’m commando right now because she asked me to go to Lush to get her a bath bomb for a treat, and I’m planning a wee sniff-fest at the mall.

I know there are several yoga with Adrienne fans here. Thanks for putting her on my radar – I’ve been doing one or two of her videos each day while here and it’s really helped to center me.

I got to the mall too early for Saks to be open, so I perused the perfumes at Aesop. I’ve currently got Rozu on my right wrist and Eremia on my left. I like both of them a lot. My wallet is probably happy that I can’t decide which one I like more, because that means I won’t go back to grab either.

I’m finally wearing perfume again after nearly 2 weeks commando, the result of Covid and post-Covid headaches. I chose Hiram Green Lustre, which is such a lovely sharp rose, and I wish it hadn’t been discontinued.
Oh well—there are many other spectacular roses to enjoy.

The name is definitely inspired by two favorite notes, but I don’t have any in mind that feature the specific combination. Classic bouquets like No 5 and Shalimar come to mind, though? As for Iris perfumes or Jasmine perfumes, I have many favorites!

I’m in Heretic Scandalwood over Lush’s Rose Jam shower gel. Oddly, I got more rose from the sample of this one than I do from the travel spray that I purchased. Must have been a different batch(?) Even so, the 15 ml size is just perfect. Wish everything came in this size.
I reorganized my perfume collection over the weekend and was pleased to count just a dozen decants, which I will try and use up by the end of the year. Seems like a reasonable goal. Then, no more. They really do evaporate and it seems like such a waste.

Rose sandalwood is a lovely layering combo!

I feel the same about decants — it always makes me so sad to unearth one that has dried up! What a good idea to consolidate them for use this year, I might have to do the same.

SotD Aramis Calligraphy Rose. I think it’s a cousin to lots of other roses. I’m enjoying it more than Rose Barbare, but kudos to RB for its lasting power. The long drydown of RB sits on my skin the best of any phases. Calligraphy is just nice all day. The tea pot is attractive, and my first thought was I’d really like it if it came out of some tomb of antiquity. But the practical maintenance of a modern gold-leafed tea pot would not work in my world.

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic is considered the OG vitamin C serum. They did a lot of research and have a patent on the formula. I used it for awhile, and while it is *nice* it is crazy expensive. I’ve tried the dupes: Maelove (turned my hands orange just fyi), DRMTLGY and Timeless. My current faves are Summer Friday’s which also contains Niacinamide and has a wonderful gel like texture and Oskia’s super-c, which are individual capsules- they are an oil base which was sooo nice this winter on my skin.
I would highly, highly recommend Caroline Hiron’s blog, book: Skincare The New Edit and SkinRocks app. She is an esthetician and has the best advice out there. My skin has never looked better!!

My mother would say, “That teapot has nothing to do with my life”, but would have secretly yearned for it. One grandma would have loved it tucked in amid all her other boho baubles and do-dads, long before boho was a thing. Other grandma would have sniffed and called it “tres tacky, “ and then laughed at her “bad grammar in two languages” joke. Big family get-togethers in my family were always a hoot and a half, as they say.. Boho grandma wore Joy, schoolmarm grandma wore Arpege, mom wore Emeraude and cigarette smoke, and later, White Linen. I miss them all.

Finishing up the LAP Potager samples in Musc Amarante today. I get some beet, but this is mostly musc to my nose. Like a 30%-70% split. I am trying it against CdG Rouge, but I forgot that Rouge is a ginger bomb on me and the beet never really comes through. I realized after I got to the office that I should have grabbed Kyoto to try again MA instead because that ones has rose in it, but too late now.

I’m sampling a bit of Rose 31 today. At first sniff I thought it must have some patchouli in it, but I don’t see it in the notes listed. Maybe the combo of cumin, cedar, and woods tricked me. I’m not great at identifying notes anyway! I am liking it, at any rate.

For those who’ve bought Le Labos before, do you prefer the eau de parfums or the oils? And there’s also a balm–too many choices for me.

Baked some brownies this afternoon, just for grins.

SOTD = Dame Desert Rose EdP. I’d call this a powdery rose. It smells like pink rose petals too. Not as sweet as Cassis, Rose & Sandalwood.

Forgot to mention that today’s teapot looks like it belongs in a museum rather than someone’s kitchen! Very pretty objet d’art.

I am thinking it is not a teapot you can clean with efferdent, which means I definitely don’t want it in my kitchen :-)

I’ve been craving brownies! Found some pandemic-stock-up baker’s chocolate in the pantry and set it out on the counter to await the arrive of inspiration. :D

Nothing that fancy for me, just a boxed mix. I have some tweaks to make if I decide to whip up another batch. I think using some chai instead of water would be rather tasty.

Yum! I almost baked brownies over the weekend, but then went the lazy route and just bought cookies at the store instead.😂

I have a lot of walnut pieces that were just begging to be used in something other than snacking out of hand.

Same, except I bought chocolate cake, because that’s what they had at the bakery. :-)

This sounds great! I have tried his Rose de Mai and find it FB worthy so will have to seek out a sample of Desert Rose

It may be a while before I make another batch. I realized that I don’t consume that much in the way of baked goods anymore, so that batch will easily last a week for me.

Lovely teapot! But I rarely drink tea, so no need for one. I had a massage at lunch time so commando until then, but I’ve just put on some Woman in Gold. Although not a rose perfume, rose is a note.

Quick comment and then back to working for one more hour. I’m in DSH Inner Sanctum since ringthing wore it yesterday and reminded me of how much I like it. It’s a beautiful dark rose chypre with an animalic aspect from oud, but it’s just the right amount of oud to balance things out.

DSH has a rather intimidating website! I have yet to successfully navigate it.

SOTD = Guerlain Shalimar Philtre de Parfum

Powdery lemon too, florals, vanilla and some gasoline. Love it!

I took the latest train I could catch to make it to work by 8AM (but really cutting it close). Anyway, there was a two seater with the aisle seat open, except, EXCEPT there was a cell phone charging. The woman who had the aisle seat in front of said seat stood up and gave me the look and said she will sit there then. I almost blew my too – talk about being entitled. Seriously, a seat for a cell phone? 😱 This sounds like a story I heard about entitled teens whose cell phones are, get this, carried by a maid, as a sign of [fill in the blanks] 👊and no, this not a fist bump.

She thought it was okay for her cell phone to take up a seat on a crowded commuter train?? Honestly, what is wrong with people.

OMG. What is wrong with people? Craziness to need a seat for the cell phone.

The only polite word I can think of to describe Cell Phone Woman is “obnoxious”. However, I can easily come up with quite a few Not Safe for NST words for that individual too!
