Wednesday scent of the day 1/18

Posted by Robin on 18 January 2023 159 Comments

It’s Hump Day and National Thesaurus Day, aka Peter Mark Roget’s birthday. More birthdays: AA Milne, Cary Grant, Philippe Starck. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Annick Goutal Nuit et Confidences, which I came across while looking for something else. (Raise your hand if that's frequently how you choose your fragrance.)

Reminder: 1/20 is David Lynch's birthday. Pick a favorite Lynch work or character and wear a scent to match, or pick a theme (split roles? doppelgangers? surrealism?) and work with that for your fragrance choice. If you don't know (or care about) his work, you could just wear something a little weird or off-kilter.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: Philippe Starck's MyWorld Sofa for Cassina, featuring built-in charging and multiple configurations ("An invitation to comfort and at the same time, a structural and aesthetic challenge that reflects a world where work and leisure time are blurred, imbuing contemporary furniture with multiple functions") seems like the perfect furniture for a global pandemic, but it debuted in 2013.

I love that sofa but I really need one of these delightful Cassina Wink chairs!

        The best advice!

I am seriously on a quest for a comfortable, multi-positon chair. Everything seems to be made for tall, long-legged people.

I tried out a mother’s chair somewhere that was the right size and had a rocking ottoman, but the seat front cut into my hamstrings. 😩

I enjoyed the tui video yesterday. So many of them in one garden! Must be the warmer north. They’re interesting birds who develop regional dialects, so the tui around my garden would sound different from ones just across the city. They also have wonderful long tongues…good for nectar feeding and singing.

I just found nozknoz’s link from yesterday – wonderful. I googled the tui call after your post yesterday and found a different video. So much fun.

I’m glad I looked them up. A downside here is that our birds are mostly relatively boring compared to the bold colors and eccentric behaviors elsewhere.

        Tui is great onomatopoeia, too.

SOTD is Alahiiiine but from the solid perfume. I am on my last refill and I enjoy the solid perfume over the spray.
my youngest is seven today. I am sure some of you can remember when I announced my birth on nst, seems like yesterday.

I started the book Elisa Shua Dusapin, Winter in Sokcho. I recommendation on BdJ. Its a quick read-but I am loving it. I think the tea, my perfume and the cold, pair well with this reading.

Good morning from another cloudy day. Nice and dry, anyway. I’m afraid winter is going to roar with a vengeance in February, when Mr ringthing has his hip surgery and I have to drive him to PT all the time.
Wearing Narciso white cube, I’ve been craving it.

You’re in luck: all leap years are divisible by four (although not all years divisible by four are leap years, it’s a whole thing), so there will be only 28 days to suffer through. Next year, though….

Mojave Ghost for me this morning, and it makes me think of Georgia O’Keeffe’s desert paintings. Someday I’ll own one (a reproduction — I have no illusions that an original will fall into my lap). In a nod to the CP, I wore Encre Noire at bedtime last night. There is something surreal about it that suits the Lynch oeuvre.

Yesterday’s SOTD was Iris Silver Mist, which seemed to somehow work for the CP. (Many different facets?) It also worked for the grey rain, which I’ve been battling through all week. Having to commute to the office on transit in the rain is not my cup of tea, but today’s the last day for this week.

Of course, I have to spend part of today making a silly video lip-syncing to BTS’ “Butter” for a supposedly “zany” corporate event next week. I’m really a bit old for this, but in my new group this is a part of what I have to do, I guess. Ready for today being over.

I’m in Vanille Insensee for some vanilla comfort. I have about 40 mls of my 100 ml bottle left and I’ve already decided that I’m not going to fret that it’s no longer available in the US. When it’s gone I’ll replace it with Eau Duelle.
I’m sick again. Groan. I just felt like I was getting over being sick at Christmas and I could feel the sniffles starting over the weekend. Just a runny, stuffy nose this time, so I’m not nearly as bad as I was over Christmas. It’s more annoying than miserable. I don’t think I was sick once last winter, so I guess my body is making up for it this year.😏 At least tomorrow is my Friday so my week is already more than half done.

Am all in on the CP with ELdO Dangerous Complicity, chosen with Mulholland Drive in mind. But, as Sr. spiderplant immediately pointed out, it works equally well with Wild at Heart or Blue Velvet.

Bonus points: I do not particularly care for this frag (I think it’s the ylang ylang that doesn’t do it for me), which means I have been slightly unsettled all morning, and unsettled is so very David Lynch.

Finally, so enjoying this week’s CP, because it has had me thinking about film all week.

Yesterday’s SOTD was Bruno Fazzolari Unsettled, which is a fine name-match for David Lynch even if the scent itself is not unsettling (sandalwood, vanilla, pineapple).

Today I am really diving into the CP though. A few years back (oh wait, I just checked, and it was 6 years ago…) House of Matriarch released a trio of scents inspired by Twin Peaks. Today I’m wearing World of Blue: “A cloud of powdery iris beurre imparts a melancholy dreaminess.”

Very nice indeed! The inkwell bottle is pretty neat although I think it is impractical.

Would you use your mouth to remove gloves that you “commute” (any type) with? You know my answer. 😝

Spent last night dusting my dressers. Everything was duster than I thought. About to get into the shower since I spent more time cleaning. I think that Epic might be a good fit for today but might decide differently when I get out of the shower.

I’m in DSH Sweet Pine Tar and thanks to Kanuka’s post above, I’m going to tie that one in to smells of David Lynch’s work as painter/artist. (Actually, it brings back good memories of my dad’s small workshop where there were lots of fresh cut wood and turpentine smells.)

I visited Seattle a few years ago and did a tour of the Olympic Peninsula. As someone more accustomed to the great Eastern hardwood forests, I found the mountains and conifers beautiful but highly unsettling because the green is so dark. Maybe there’s some deep, ancestral instinct that tells you that an area like this is going to be under 10 feet of snow in the winter — get out while you can!

Testing Enfleurage Amber EDP which is a wonderful natural perfume but very close to the skin. Not unsettling but there are feral undertones and a Lynch-like depth. I’m rewatching Twin Peaks and appreciating how the stage settings, with all their quirky, off-kilter vintage details, contribute to the feeling of a place outside of normal reality.

Interesting, sort of assumed it was not like that in real life but good to know it is … I have never been that far north out west.

I rewatched Twin Peaks in 2017 when they brought out season 3, but gosh that already seems like a lifetime ago!

I ran some errands today with my sister and needed to wear something under the radar. I went with Carven L’Eau de Toilette. We stopped at goodwill and I found one perfume called Fire. It’s a knock off of Beyoncé Heat. I left it on the shelf. Lol.

Lordy, what a DAY! Still wafting Initio Side Effect because I have not yet been able to shower…

Moby is back to his usual dash lights and it makes me so happy. ☺️ Took 15 minutes and less than $200 to fix the issue which was a failed emissions selinoid that is very common problem with Chevy Vans/trucks. The only issue in 5 years so I am NOT complaining! 👍🏼🚐

Very common in chevy trucks and vans due to the location of the selenoid, because it receives all kicked up dirt/dust from the rear wheels. He showed me the old one and when he tipped it over, half of Arizona came rushing out. 😅 I wish I were as handy as your brother. I like being self sufficient but I’m sadly lacking any kind of basic car/carpentry/machine skills…

Commando today since I have covid and can’t smell perfume. If I hold a bottle of eucalyptus essential oil about an inch under my nose I can smell it and Rose Jam Shower Gel at about the same distance so I have hope that I won’t lose my sense of smell. Of course, I keep browsing perfume sites because I’m home and it’s snowing (the combo makes me want to shop). Sigh.
