It's Hump Day, International Chess Day and Gregor Mendel’s birthday. (And, PSA, I am off on a road trip today, to Northern Massachusetts, then later to Maine. I'll probably be gone until around July 28 or 29. We'll continue to have daily polls but posting might be lighter than usual.) What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Parfums de Nicolaï Eau Exotique, day 2.
Reminder: on 7/22, for National Mango Day, wear a perfume (or a body product?) with a mango note, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning.
Sotd is JM Myrrh & Tonka.
Currently drinking Marco Polo tea.
Forecast predicts a super hot day today, can’t say I am loving it. 😬 Stay cool everybody!
You smell fab! Yeah, the heat is not welcome here either. 👎🏼
I am also having Mariage Freres tea-some of their green tea..
I imagine your JM M&T + the MP tea smell lovely together!
Today it’s bright and sunny and all is green, so I’m in Hermès Bel Ami Vetiver, a very good update of the original — the bitterness has been toned down, as has the leather, and the greenness amped up.
Ah, good info — I’ve been wondering whether I should try the vetiver iteration, but the bitterness and the leather in the original version are my favorite parts. Sounds like, for me, they’d be very different perfumes.
Oh, it’s still recognizably Bel Ami, but more accessible. I’m with you: the bitterness was always the entire point, as far as I’m concerned, and nothing can compare to the 1986 original, but the Vetiver version is a perfectly acceptable facelift — it’s not suddenly a carbon copy of a hundred other scents. You should give it a try if you can.
Oh this is one of my favourite Hermés, enjoy!
Currently commando as I drink espresso and watch the kittens chase each other around the room. Despite weighing only about 4 pounds each, they can sound like a thundering herd of horses when they get going. I am grateful that they wait for me to wake up before they start, though! They’ve been really good that way — no 2 a.m. wake-ups.
It’s going to be 111 degrees in my hood today, which is about par for the course for the high desert in July. But ugh, still. I have an in-person meeting later this morning, which will be my first in two years. Not really looking forward to it, but I guess it has to happen sometime. I might wear something to keep myself calm and centered — maybe Jaisalmer, or Ava Luxe No. 23.
Keep cool and smell good, all.
Lol, we had 2 cats, both on the small side and we described them as a herd of elephants. They DID wake us up as they loved to chase each other around on the floor above our heads at 2 am.
Once was extra loud, they were clearly jumping off furniture. When I went upstairs to put a stop to it I discovered they were after a bat! They’d actually managed to snag it mid-air and one had it pinned to the floor with her paw and a very pleased look. I was not as pleased as I now had to deal with a half dead bat in the middle of the night.
😳Yikes!
I hope your meeting goes well. That’s a big transition back to in person meetings! Stay cool.
I can imagine it must be a difficult transition back to face to face for all the folks who’ve been working remotely. I’m in love with you kitties! If I had a home I would love to take one off your hands, despite the fact I promised myself no more litter noxes back in 2005…😃
Now, Deva: kitty litter has really improved since ’05! Just sayin’
Oh, does litter now come with a butler to scoop and dispose? 😜
Aww, kitties! =^v^=
I used to joke about my cats dropping bowling balls around when they had the kitty crazies.
I’m wearing Concrete, but it is a little sweet for today’s heat. For some reason I was thinking of Demeter’s Petrichor as I was walking out the door this morning. Wishful thinking maybe, since we are in desperate need of rain. I’ll have to find my bottle.
Hope you’ll get some rain and find that bottle!
Have a fun trip, Robin!
It’s gonna be another hot one here today. I’ll be lounging by the pool, shaded by my white marble pavilion, being served cool drinks and delightful snacks by a gorgeous servant.
Not.
Sigh, no pool, pavilion, or servants here. I do have a big pergola on order but it is wandering around the country in FedEx’s alternate reality. They claim it will be delivered today, but we do not believe them, seeing as the last tracking update was a couple of days ago.
SOTD is Un Jardin Sur Le Nil.
Ah, the postal alternate reality. I spent an hour at the bank yesterday, trying to undo the US Postal Service’s mess. (We bought a used music instrument for my kid, and the seller insisted on a cashier’s check sent through the mail…which of course the USPS lost. It took an hour for the bank to trace the check, cancel it, and reissue a new one.)
I once ordered some makeup online. It arrived at my house within a week, while the tracking said it had never left Compton. A real head scratcher.
Two weeks ago FedEx delivered a package to me that was marked with: expected delivery on Sunday; then expected delivery on Wednesday; then ‘out for delivery’ on Tuesday, in a town 250 miles away from me; then expected delivery on Friday; but actually delivered on Thursday. You can see why I have little faith in their delivery dates.
LOL – we can dream! Sweltering here today, too; my best shot was to work outside early, get hot, then shower and start loafing in the AC after lunch!
My kids played competitive chess in national tournaments and were self taught ( it’s rare NOT to have a coach). They tried to teach me but gave up. It’s not an easy game and it takes a certain mindset which clearly I don’t have.
🙂 I think I don’t have the mindset, either! I love knitting, but I’ve noticed I never seem to keep the pattern in my head; I constantly refer to the printed version. I think these two might be related?
Well I swear I posted that comment under your comment on chess lol
Thanks pixel! Today was driving and not fun, but tomorrow should be fun 🙂
I’m in Cristalle EDT this morning while tussling with the coffee maker (it needs to be descaled, a long and annoying process). Running the sprinklers extra this week in preparation for some very high temperatures that my trees weren’t built to withstand. I’ll go out in a bit and talk soothingly to them. Probably helps me more than them, but still. 🥵 🌲
Yay for watering trees! Sure, you can save money by letting the lawn go brown, but if you have foundation trees and shrubbery, they need that water! My old yews and the holly tree seem happier after a good soak.
Enjoy New England, Robin! I used to love summers up there (and hate them, when they were impossibly hot and humid). But I have very fond memories of Maine, especially.
SOTD is Calyx — I found another mango in my collection! 🙂
Thanks for the reminder about Calyx for a mango note. I don’t think it showed up on Fragrantica (under the by note section).
It does not show up on Fragrantica as having mango. And I have Calyx! Maybe tomorrow.
Oh, another option for Friday then!
Thank you, and you smell great!
I am wearing Caron Piu Bellodgia today 🙂
A classic.
I am wearing Timbuktu today and enjoying it a lot.
I might switch to something else in the afternoon.
I have switched to frankincense oil mixed with plain lotion…very relaxing.
Hot and humid here with thunderstorms this evening. My dogs are getting their Barkbox today and it will sidetrack them from the storms. Wearing Deneuve parfum.
Hope the dogs are distracted tonight Dawn!
Wearing Aedes de Venustas Copal Azur to keep calm and focused on this not so hot, humid day. 95 right now feeling like 101. Great weather! 🥵
On my way to have lunch an ready to have a lemon ice cream cone!
Happy Wednesday! 🍨
See below.🤣
Ooh, lemon ice cream sounds so good! Hope you can stay cool.
Thank you, Gail! I think I will survive! 🍨
I polished off my Haagen Dazs mint chip today. Need to seek out some lemon!
I am grabbing some cantaloupe and/or watermelon gelato on my way home tonight. So much needed!
Interesting flavors for gelato! Right now, a root beer one sounds pretty darn good to me…
There is a great artisanal gelateria in my office neighborhood with very interesting tropical flavors for summer. I love their ricotta the cinnamon and the fig flavors. All delicious.
Just remember it is better to have a high dew point than a negative wind chill! ( I sound like a fortune cookie. Lol)
Stay cool. Ice cream helps.
Lol! To perfumelover67!
Lol! I am embracing this weather with so much love and gratitud! 🤣
Ice cream, how much I adore you!
LOL to both of you! 😀
😃
I KNOW what you’re doing …
😂🤣
Hah! I said something similar to a neighbor this morning. He wasn’t a fan of the summer heat. I replied that at least I didn’t have to shovel it!
Getting ready for work and will put a little makeup on today. Inspired by the posts yesterday.
Sotd is Carven L’eau de toilette. Perfect for the humidity.
Looking’ good! Your Pretenders clip the other day was great. I ended up watching more and more. Maybe it’s time to rock out the black eyeliner?
Thanks! I am wearing black eyeliner too!
Glad the thread inspired you!
Hope you have a good day lillyjo!
Yay you for doing makeup today!
Woo hoo, lillyjo!
It got very warm here yesterday and the coming week is predicted to be in the 90’s. 🥵
Still no mango, but I found a super cheap bottle of Philosophy Falling in Love at Ross last night. I used to layer this with their body products back in the day. It’s still quite nice, although a bit thinner than I remember. Especially good for summer because it’s a bit brighter with a blackberry note and dries down to a soft very light vanilla.
Happy Humpday!
No Boyfriend yesterday, it’s still “Out For Delivery.” Since Monday. 🙁
Aww shucks! I hope you get it soon! I had to go to the local PO yesterday and 3 people ahead of me were there to pick up packages that tracking had claimed “delivered.” Only one poor overworked harassed employee at the desk, who had to go on a wild baboon hunt in the back to locate “delivered” packages. They were only able to locate one of the three. I felt so bad for her because she bore the brunt of everyone’s frustration. So it seems there no good way to ship/mail anything these days. UPS and FedEx are just as bad.
I’ve been seeing some packages being delivered by DHL in my area lately.
What’s amusing here is that I often get notices from Amazon that UPS was unable to deliver to our PO Box. It always means the package is at the post office. Thankful to be in a small town – even so, the staff scrambles. Our next door neighbor works for the USPS. Supposed to be part time, but she’s been working overtime beyond 40 hrs a week.
Have a wonderful and safe trip, Robin. ❤️
My first discovery set arrived yesterday, and I’m tryin Tocca Cleopatra. I’m not sure what I think of it yet. Now that I’ve learned to wait a bit to see how it changes over time, all I can say is that it does not remind me of Egypt.
When the box of samples arrived yesterday, I was a bit enthusiastic and sprayed five different scents on various body parts. The aftermath was as you would expect. Then I put the box of samples in a ziplock bag because everything was an assault on my senses.
Slow and steady wins the race. I’ll return and report.
If you’re new, welcome!
Ditto
Greetings!
Thank you!
And yes, the hardest thing to do in the beginning is slow down!
Thank you all for your kind welcomes!
And thank you so much for the advice and incredible resources on this blog!
I joined a private FB group today where people swap and sell fragrance. They also have a wall of scammers! Yikes!
Let’s see. I won’t be buying Tocca’s Cleopatra, but it was fun to try. I think I need more vanilla. IIRC, the base note is supposed to be vanilla musk. I believe I smell it, but it’s faint. I wonder if the power of suggestion affects what I smell…
The top notes were YIKES! The heart notes forgettable, so onward ho to tomorrow!
I’m trying to put a dent in my sample box, so today I’m trying “He left his cologne in my bedroom”. It’s a Tauerville scent, and I bought the sample when the scents were being offered during Luckyscent’s (15th?) anniversary. Which was a few years ago. (This shows you how badly I need to deal with samples!)
At any rate, it’s a lovely cologne and perfect for a very hot day.
Stay cool (or warm for our folks in the Southern Hemisphere) and safe!!
I am trying to keep warm but I may need to hunt out my long johns. Have a wonderful day today in all that heat.
I’m wearing the 🐘🐘. It’s almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I only wear it in the summer. It works.
Omg! Kudos to you! 😃
I’m not even gonna tell you how many sprays….hajusuuri style times three 😂. I think the extreme heat evaporated it off my skin. Mango definitely pops in the extreme heat.
Someone has to do it 🤣
*bowing down before you in utmost respect * 🙇🏻♀️
You ran the perfume experiment I decided not to. 🤣
One of these days I need to sniff that one. Seems to get lots of love.
Prodigal son tested positive for COVID this AM. He is so bummed. Not sure what to do to cheer him up. I’m working a short day, but have an MRI scheduled at 6, so do not want to go near him. (I tested negative with the home antibodies tests). For the same reason, I am wearing only a light application of perfume, which should be dissipated by the time of my appt. I’ll take another antibody test before I head out.
Perfume is Boyfriend (Kate Walsh), from a sample I ordered after being inspired by someone here to do so.
I hope your son bounces back quickly from Covid. Good luck with your MRI . I hope everything works out well with your appointment and results.
Hope your son’s case will be mild and that your medical test goes well.
I’m sorry OF. Good luck today and the best of health wishes to your son.
Those home tests are insanely inaccurate. Ten of my coworkers tested negative only to tests positive when they had a test done in the doctor’s office. And apparently there’s a new strain going around that’s vaccine resistant. Two of my coworkers have been sick now twice in two months, both vaccinated and boosted
I hope all goes well with the MRI and OF Jr.’s COVID is mild.
Sending healing and good test result vibes your way 🙂
I hope everything goes well for you and your son! 🌻
Vibes for a mild case for him and nothing for you!
Ugh. Good luck with your MRI, and I hope that your son’s COVID is a mild case.
Wishing your family well!
Good luck on all fronts Oakland!!
Have a happy road trip, Robin. I feel like we have entered the bleak mid-winter phase. It was particularly miserable yesterday, the large temperature gauge that flashes brightly by the valley storage units registered 2 degrees at 3pm when I drove past yesterday and today feels no warmer. It’s a damp cold, and we have been under low cloud for days. But I also saw a stark black branch dotted with cherry blossom, not many, but enough to hint at brighter days. Wearing Thameen Royal Sapphire from a Gaynor sample. It didn’t make her list and it won’t make mine. I liked the first few seconds as it reminded me of Dimp, an old insect repellent, but now it strikes me as dull and flat. Is it me or the perfume?!!
Yay for hints of spring. 🙂
Wow, your cold is as brutal as our heat. Glad you are seeing buds at least.
Have a wonderful time in Maine, Robin! I have great memories of sleeping in my car at Acadia National Park and eating a lobster I boiled over a camp fire when I was young and poor. Such beautiful sunrises over the water.
Today I’m in Smell Bent St. Tropez Dispenser Gold. Hot here so I am not doing much.
Hello there scent twin!
I have still never been to Acadia! It’s on my list, maybe next summer.
I always want to learn to play Chess and also Go. But I don’t know anyone who is all geeky-love about either. My sister and I got onto Whist and Backgammon, so at least I have some civilized pass times to fall back on!
I left you a comment regarding chess here but it ended up further above ⬆️
Saw it!
My nephew was the State Chess Champion for at least one year, if not more. He has a natural interest in chess strategy and at one point he had enough points to be a chess master, but poor health set him back on his journey to be a grand master. He now teaches chess.
That is very cool! I do not have the ability to think strategically, and chess requires both spatial and chronological strategies (if that makes sense). I’ve been enjoying the new(ish) NYT chess reply game because it explains each move, although it assumes a level of chess understanding that I do not have!
Can’t do chess either because I definitely lack the ability to think 5 steps ahead. I’m more of a Candy Crush kinda gal..
Feeling quite overwhelmed today based on multiple, approaching fronts… ⛈ work, personal, the world and weather but just sprayed on some Arielle Shoshana (the fruity one which became Saturday) and that can only make things better. 🙂 Don’t think mango is a listed note but this one has lots of fruit w/ some vanilla peeking out from underneath.
You smell pretty.
I hope your day settles down and you find some peace of mind and a spot of calm.
Sending positive thoughts! 🌻
Sending calming vanilla vibes.
Hugs, She-ra. Maybe some ice cream is in order?
Ditto!
Ice cream makes everything better!
Vanilla ice cream! Sending more good thoughts:)
Sending positive thoughts to you She-ra.
Sending out good thoughts, She-ra. I hope tomorrow is a better day.
I spent this much cooler day in Eau de Rochas, still detectable in its mineral drydown. Tonight for the CP I am Romeo by Romeo Gigli, that line is all confusing names, honestly why couldn’t they give proper names to these perfume but the scent is really pretty, more floral than fruity, I don’t smell the mango. I still have half of my 50ml bottle and purchased a partial bottle from eBay a few years ago. It is soft and elegant.
What % of your bottles do you have a back-up for? When you love something, you really love it!
Ah, I had to think and survey, maybe around 15%.
Glad to hear that things cooled down for you!
Thank you, it was a short heat wave thank goodness.
Commando as I am feeling a bit under the weather today and yesterday.
Hope you feel better soon!
Oh oh, the heat will get you. I hope you feel better soon!
Oh dear, hope tomorrow is better.
SOTD is the new Carthusia A’mmaro, which smells like ocean water and herbs. Very much a non-coconut beach scent. It’s a good thing that I like the scent because I fell in love with the bottle as soon as I saw it.
My AC is working as hard as it can, but there is only so much it can do in this heat. Unfortunately, I’m stuck upstairs, which is a few degrees warmer than downstairs. I need to keep an eye on my cat’s water intake as she recovers from an upper respiratory virus. She decided about 6 months ago that she is an upstairs cat and that we would all just have to adjust around that decision (which of course we did because Mr. Vee and I are not the ones in control of this household).
Tea to day is Clippership’s Black Snail. It has more bite than I anticipated and I like it!
Aw, hope that your kitty shakes off that URI.
Cat’s gonna cat!
Lacking inspiration, I sprayed on some Rose de Siwa. Not terribly exciting. May go for something bigger in a while.
Meanwhile, my bedroom and bathroom purge continues. Hauled out two large trash bags of clothes, shoes and purses today after hauling out two brown paper grocery bags of bathroom stuff yesterday. Feeling somewhat satisfied, although sadly it did not even make a dent in my overstuffed closet. :-/
I love Rose de Siwa! And congrats on your clean out (albeit with more to do).
Good job cazaubon!🌞
Go cazauban – getting stuff out twin! I realized I don’t need five 9″ pie dishes nor three steamer baskets, and off to the thrift store they went.
Stinking hot and humid today. Depending on which weather app I check out, it was either 94 or 96 today. Plus, there’s an Air Quality Alert going on. Not the best day to iron some shirts, was it? 🥵😵 The cats are loving it, though. They’ve been happily snoozing in various spots around the house this afternoon.
SOTD = back in St. Tropez Dispenser Gold EdT.
It used to amaze me that our calico liked nothing better than laying out on our screened porch when temps were over 100.
Cats really do seem to love the heat. 😻😻
The opposite of my golden retriever who would flop down with her head directly on the air conditioning vent (metal – didn’t look that comfortable!) and move out of any sun that came through the windows.
Awwww, cute!
I don’t even know what I would have done to pass the time because it is too too hot. I’ll be home tomorrow so I can just stay in and work to distract me from the heat.
It was either iron those shirts this afternoon, or do it tomorrow morning.
Hoping to get groceries tomorrow before it gets too crazy.
Yeah… I would say not the best day for ironing! When do you get a cool front?
Not for at least 7 days. This latest heat wave is a big one.
Hello everyone! I keep trying to settle down and catch up on this week’s posts but hmm, keep getting distracted. I’m in Diptyque Eau Capitale, it’s lovely and dry in warm weather. Yesterday was SL L’Eau d’Armoise, which suddenly seemed perfect for a heatwave. But thankfully today is much cooler here. Good wishes to you all, and Robin, I hope you have a wonderful trip!
Eau Capitale sounds so good.
Thanks DolceVita, and hope all is well with you!
Ran out the door this am and weather was far nicer than I expected. I had expected more heat and humidity, but it was pleasant. CSP Aloha Tiare was my choice, thinking it would suit sultry weather. No mango but there’s coconut…
Saw Mrs Harris Goes to Paris yesterday. Sweet fluff of a movie. Charming and enjoyable. Lots of folks at the theater, since it was $5 Tuesday. Nice to see people back. And I admit to drooling over a few of the Dior dresses shown.
We also stopped in at the furniture store where we had ordered a bed on May 1. Estimated delivery kept changing until it’s now showing mid September. So, we went to the store and looked again and found something we both liked even better. Cancelled original and new bed will be delivered on Tuesday. Yippee!
And I was able to order lenses at Costco for my new frames. I’m quite proud I found the frames online for about 55% cheaper than in a store, and Costco progressive lenses are nicely priced. Instead of an estimated $700, I’m spending not quite $300. (I think that’s actually cheaper than the Warby Parker ones I got a couple of years back…) Definitely has made the Costco membership worthwhile.
Now, if only this minor cold I caught would disappear…. First cold since pre-COVID.
I think my brother has gotten some of his glasses at Costco in the past. He requires safety glasses for his job, and has been pleased with the results. Not sure where he gets them now.
I suppose you can only be patient for so long! Just today, 2 people thanked me for being patient; one was legit the other one was just making excuses.
I’ve often said it’s a big mistake to give people extra time to second-guess a purchase. The longer this went, the more I questioned our decision. I’ve often been in stores with my wallet out but put something back because the line to purchase was too long.
Robin – enjoy your vacation; hopefully the hot weather will pass you by.
SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’Eau
It’s not even enough to counteract this ugly hot humid weather. I went out to get lunch at close to noon. I was under the sun for <2 minutes and I felt like my skin was boiling! 🥵
On a funnier note, the guy whom I said was carrying a watermelon on his head had upped his game: the watermelon is now a big slice of watermelon, held up above his head by the core of a … pineapple which he held steady with his mouth/teeth! Only in New York. I suppose if I wanted to take a picture I can pay him …
All I can think is how sticky he must be!
That’s the hard way to make a fruit salad.
Thanks hajusuuri! Usually it is much cooler up here than in SE PA, but not this year! But will be in the lake tomorrow and won’t care.
Recently applied Chanel No 19 edt. It’s pretty hot today and it looks like we have 2 weeks of warm weather ahead. 🌞
SOTD Paris-Deauville. Got two(!) separate compliments on the almost thirty-year-old linen dress I was wearing — it’s kind of shaped like a muu-muu, just a straight, loose, almost-ankle-length sack with two nice patch pockets at the front hips. Deep teal, waffle weave — perfect for this weather. Something I couldn’t really afford when I bought it, but it has more than given me my money’s worth.
Had dinner tonight at a Belgian-style microbrewery that opened during the pandemic. By 7 pm it was cloudy enough to eat outdoors, under the trees at a table with an umbrella. Nice breeze, too, to cut the humidity. When I left a meeting just after 3, my car’s thermometer registered 111!
