Wednesday scent of the day 3/16

Posted by Robin on 16 March 2022 131 Comments

It's Hump Day and Jerry Jeff Walker’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: we are returning from vacation today, and I'm commando for the trip. I am already a bit behind on comments and emails, and probably won't catch up entirely until Thursday night.

Reminder: on 3/18 we're doing Green Friday...wear a green perfume (St. Patrick's Day is on Thursday so maybe wear 2 in a row? This is a repeat from 2014)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wow, this is the earliest I’ve ever seen NST up for the day – thanks, Robin, for setting the table before you hit the road! SotD L’Air du Temps. It reminds me how much I love carnations and spicy perfumes. It also endears me because it has so many notes. Safe travels home, Robin; and good morning and happy Wednesday to all.

I spilled some star-anise oil on myself this morning and *that’s* not going away any time soon so I figured I might as well just go with it and put on some Lolita Lempicka, which smells like licorice candy with a little greenery for fun.

    Good morning.
Sotd is MFK Aqua Celestial forte.
Fresh and clean. Putting me in a Spring kinda mood.
Continuing the aqua theme with a glass of sparkling water.

SOTM is a tiny spritz of Zoologist Panda. It’s not me. Post shower I will likely be in Cristalle. Realized the other day that all the Chanels I own are greenies, although I wore No. 5 years ago and have sampled a few others that aren’t (Cuir de Russie and Bois des Iles, for two). What are some of your favorite non-green Chanels?

Voting for Chanel 22! Love the aldehydes and the incense of the base. Second would be Coco EDP versus n19.

Most Zoologists don’t work for me including Panda. My brain reads them as “synthetic” in a bad way.

In another kind of green today: Hiram Green! I’m wearing Lustre, which I guess has been discontinued already? I like it, though—a luminous but sort of tart rose.

Yes, it seems not to have been popular, discontinued already. I enjoy it a lot, after the initial tea rose blast which is not my favorite. Drydown is wonderful though.

Oh no! I didn’t know this! Why does he discontinue beauties like Lustre or Dilettante? I really like Lustre, it’s one of my favourite roses. On the flip side, I just browsed his website and he has a new release coming 1st April: “Arcadia”. Very curious about this one, the notes sound promising!

It didn’t go well – had the cleaning, then the dentist said I needed three fillings. Unfortunately this is a new dentist, and I don’t trust him. I think he is trying to plump up his bottom line. I had a checkup with xrays 7 months ago from another dentist and they didn’t say any of this was necessary. So I think I need to get another opinion.

Not CP-compliant today. I’m comparing LADDM and Au Coeur du Desert. Found a sample of Au Coeur du Desert last night that I hadn’t worn in a long time, and it was my SOTE (which I very much enjoyed). It occurred to me that I’ve never tried them against each other, so decided today would be the day. Of course, trying a spray against a dabber isn’t totally fair, though.

I think the main difference I noticed between LAdDM and ACdD was that LAdDM was drier and less on the amber. Definitely perfume siblings to my nose.

Totally siblings. Both are beautiful, but LAdDM has what my father-in-law would describe as “statement.” Personally, I like the statement. But I could see a bottle of ACdD in my future, especially should I ever go back into the office more often.

I’m in Au Dela Narcisse because it’s like spring here. Temps in the 70’s this week. Maybe more like summer? Anyway, then temps will fall into the 50’s again, so a big YAY! for that.

Lillyjo, if you see this, I wanted to know if you’ve been slugging and if so what have your results been?

And for anyone interested in my recent makeup purchases, I’ve road tested both the Monica Blunder “Blunder Cover” and the Salt New York “Sneaky Balm.” Both are really lovely and can be sheared out for light coverage or built up for a medium coverage. The Sneaky Balm is almost invisible on the skin, but the Blunder Cover has better coverage since it’s a heftier product, but still almost undetectable if applied and blended well. Both wear well under a mask and survived my hot flashes. There is some transfer, but not much. Essential to provide good skin care before applying. I apply both my skin serums and moisturizer with sunblock first and both layer over all that beautifully!

I had to look up slugging ( skin regime right?)
I would say no I have never purposely done this. However for years I used Vaseline to take off my makeup and I think it made my skin look better especially under my eyes.
If this isn’t what we’re talking about then idk ?

I’m a great believer in Vaseline–I use it to remove make up, and as a moisture barrier at night on my hands when they are super dry, as well as my heels–also around my eyes if the skin is getting dry and pulled-looking. I buy the smallest bottles possible, as the big tubs kind of gross me out.

Vaseline always makes me think of “Waiting for Guffman”: “Now what do you use on your skin?” “Vaseline.” “You use petroleum jelly on your skin? You are getting away with murder, Libby.”

That said, I used coconut oil as a makeup remover for about 10 years, and still use it if I wear mascara.

I wasn’t the one who mentioned it, but I have recently started slugging! My skin had become dry and sensitized, and combined with a simplified, nourishing serum and moisturizer, it seems to be helping. Some people do it every day; I’ve been doing about 3 days a week.

Ugh, SO tired today. Boyfriend had to wake up at 3:45 this morning and left for the airport for his work trip at 4:25. Before he got up, we were both tossing and turning the whole night, and I had a pain in the right side of my neck and shoulder that wasn’t helping matters. At least he landed safely in Dallas for his three hour layover. He’ll have to get on a small plane next for his Monroe, Louisiana destination.

I’m in another Tom Ford today, this time Vert de Fleur, which was the topic of some discussion yesterday. I’m enjoying the abundance of galbanum.

Continuing with the topic of perfume sensitivity, I find most Tom Fords are safe and appreciate most of them- especially from the Private collection. However for some reason I never took the plunge with any. Which one is your favourite? I must sample Vert de Fleur, sounds really nice.

Yeah, I’ve also been lucky to not be bothered by most Tom Fords. The only bottles I own are Eau de Soleil Blanc and a couple travel sprays of Lost Cherry, oh and a manufacturer 15ml promo bottle of Orchid Soleil. But I have decants I like too including VdF, Ombre de Hyacinth, and Velvet Gardenia.

Embracing the warmer weather today in a sample of G&B Bohemian Lime. Bright and refreshing lime, with a plesant dash of vetiver and corriander. More of a summer scent than an early spring one.

Found a concerning skin lump on my older cat this weekend, so I took her to the vet at lunch today, to be told this along with all of the other ailments I’ve brought her in for over the past few years (hearing loss, declining vision, not making it to the litter box in time, horrid gas) are all just symptoms of being a super senior cat. I’m relieved it is not an acute illness, no biopsy needed, that she is in no pain, and has been going about life as normal, but the cat mortality discussion always breaks my heart.

Drinking chocolate puer this afternoon to try to buck up.

One of mine made it to 2 years and let me know. (She had feline leukemia; the shelter told us she didn’t and then she tested positive as soon as we got her home…let’s just say that while a well-meaning no-kill shelter, it no longer exists after subsequent SPCA raids.) We gave her a good life for 1.5 years, and then she made it clear it was time. Worth treasuring all the time you get with them, no matter how long it is (current cat is middle aged and moving along to senior years in good grace).

I had to rent a car today so I can get to work tonight. It’s so fancy! Push button start?! I’m so confused. Lol! My car should be fixed tomorrow.
Sotd is L’ombre dans L’Eau. Beautiful green rose.

Tell me about it! With one car I rented, i had to google the owner’s manual to find out how to adjust the seat and open the boot.

I do this every time I’m in Europe, but it’s usually to figure out how to get the car in reverse. 🙂 So MANY ways to do reverse…

Yeah, I was rather puzzled by a push button start when I had to rent a car back in 2016. Fortunately, someone at the rental place was nice enough to let me know how it worked before I drove off.

No points for me today, i went with No5 L´Eau. This is a version of the No5, that i can tolerate, the original is too much for me. I tried to wear it in the mid-eighties, dutifully emptied my bottle (it was costly and i was a poor student) and happily bought something that suited me better.

Isn’t it great to reach the point when you choose what you want, rather than what the rest of the world tells you you should want?

And what was the one that suited you better when you emptied the No. 5 — do you remember?

(I’ve followed the opposite path with [original] No 5 — avoided it for decades but have started to love it just in the past year or two.)

    Rain today but mild 14C

Started the day in Yardley Jade which resembles Cristalle and even more Molyneux Quartz, it’s one of my best cheapies, a little early in the year to wear it. Tonight I am in Tulipano Nero, the concentrato which smells like lush tropical flowers and resins.

I’ve never heard of Yardley Jade. It sounds great! Sadly, I slept on a vintage Quartz bottle and have been kicking myself. I remember seeing this in the drugstore back in the day.

It changed name, last year, I think, to Flora Jade, same notes in Fragrantica, do try it if you have a chance.

I hope another bottle of Quartz is in your future.

Wearing the last of the L’Autre Oud. Happily I was apprised of Lancome’s spring sale, and I’ve just ordered a bottle. Got a gwp as well as 25% off, so feeling quite pleased.

Belated thanks going out to Old Herbacious, ockeghem, therabbitsflower, and She-ra for their comments on my post yesterday. I so appreciate all those good vibes. ?

Temps in the low 70’s here today. That’s around 21 or 22 degrees for the Celsius/Centigrade folks. More like late April or early May type weather for New Jersey; definitely not March!

SOTD = FM Synthetic Jungle, from the sample stash and two generous NSTers! Does anyone else get green bell pepper and clover from this? It’s tilting towards what I consider masculine on me. No flower notes at all that I can detect. It’s a weird one, and definitely not what I would call a safe blind buy, based on my experience.

Not a safe blind buy unless you absolutely love green fragrances. It’s a wallop of crushed leaves, grasses and plants upon spraying and for a few minutes afterwards. Then a rich, smooth hyacinth/white floral… it almost smells humid… heady. If you like Cristalle, No 19, Bel Respiro you will probably enjoy this.

Today’s scent: (untitled) MMM. Add this to the above list as well!

Trying to relax after a late work finish with a kitty on the lap.. 1:12 am here, sleep not coming.

SOTD was Rose Barbare for me earlier. Tomorrow I may opt for Nahema because of chypre style rose- to me feels rather green. Not a big fan of oakmoss in general but this is the exception.

Late to the party! Durga, a very loud white floral greenish scent, so maybe I get a partial point today, huh? My plan for tomorrow is some other greenish floral, maybe Diorissimo, and Friday probably DSH’s Colorado, pine green!

Even later to the party and reporting that No. 19 did her job well today and fortified me for a fight with an insurance company. I think there’ll be a lot more No. 19 in my immediate future…
