It helped make niche relevant

Posted by Robin on 1 March 2022 3 Comments

What started as a candle has become one of the most “cultish fragrances of all time,” said a voter. “The first big iconic niche fragrance,” said another. “It helped make niche relevant and was the fragrance for all Millennial opinion leaders for over 10 years.”

— Women's Wear Daily lists The 100 Greatest Fragrances of All Time (as voted on by beauty industry insiders). No 1 is the obligatory Chanel No. 5, but No 2 might surprise you: Le Labo Santal 33.

The list is heavily weighted towards things that sold well, not that actually smell world-class. Eight Tom Fords, but only one Lutens and one Hermés? Paco Rabanne 1 Million makes the list but the groundbreaking Calandre doesn’t? No sign of Dior Poison? What nonsense.

I’m too cynical, but I’m too old to be any less cynical.

Well, that makes sense given the voting population here.
