The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2021 9 Comments

Serge Lutens wants you to turn your perfume application into a 3 part ritual. Are you game? Step 1, Confit de Parfum, shown above left. "Confit de parfum La fille de Berlin offers a sensorial gesture, heightened by the warmth of your skin. A new gesture, more sensorial, more intimate, to discover another facet of La fille de Berlin. A touch is enough for an intense fragrance." (The main ingredient is dimethicone, so this should be like a dry oil. $195 CAD for 25 ml.) Then, step 2, you spray on your regular perfume. Step 3, Toison d'or, the hair perfume, shown above right. "In movement the scent diffuses, subtly perfuming the hair with fragrance for an alluring and bewitching trail." ($110 CAD for 50 ml). Available in La Fille de Berlin, Ambre Sultan and Chergui, at Holt Renfrew in Canada.

My Pumpkin Spice week, day 5: allspice, nutmeg and clove, in Comptoir Sud Pacifique L’Eau du Gouverneur…

A tiny tweak

Scientists cannot yet predict a chemical’s smell simply from its molecular shape, explains lead author Dietmar Krautwurst, a molecular cell biologist at the Technical University of Munich. For example, the chemical responsible for caramel scent, called furaneol, has also been described as smelling like strawberries or cotton candy. But just a tiny tweak in the chemical structure makes it recognizable by a different receptor, giving it a savory and herby scent instead, Krautwurst says.
