Tuesday scent of the day 2/23

Posted by Robin on 23 February 2021 244 Comments

It's Teapot Tuesday and Banana Bread Day. Birthdays today: Samuel Pepys, W. E. B. Du Bois. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm drinking a cup of Numi Chinese Breakfast, brewed with roasted cocoa nibs and cardamom. Fragrance at the moment is Diptyque Volutes.

Reminder: 2/26 is Levi Strauss Day. Along with Jacob Davis, Strauss invented and patented the riveted blue jean. Do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown are items from Denby's Studio Blue line. Image via The Wedding Shop UK at Facebook.

    SotD is Au dela Narcisse.

    Enjoying spring weather right now!
    17 degrees (more than 62 F) and sunny 🌞

Work is still busy but luckily I could find a moment yesterday (late in the afternoon) for a walk in the woods. It smells amazing right now, its lovely to hear all the birds chirping and we spotted two roe deer in the fields!

I wore that yesterday and enjoyed it. It was funny, because I really got the narcissus note on one arm, but not the other.

Roe deer are quite common here in The Netherlands.
In some areas real deer (red deer) roam but they are much harder to find/spot.

We have what seems like gazillions of Canada geese on our hospital campus, and they are pairing off like crazy right now. LOL Soon there will be nests all around with eggs and MEAN mama geese protecting them! :)

SmokeyToes wore vintage Amazone yesterday and as soon as I red that I knew I had to do the same, because it’s *fantastic*. I’m in the parfum, wildly complex but artfully masked with the illusion of simplicity — bright flashes of green up top, armloads of flowers, black fruit woven through the whole thing, and plush, earthy oakmoss to ground it all. Yyou feel as if you’re walking around in a nimbus of gold.

25 days until spring and it can’t come a minute too soon, I tell you.

this sounds fantastic! On it goes on the “duty free” list (I think I’ve seen Amazone there before – obviously not the vintage one). That list is getting long!

I’ve read that recent reformulations are actually pretty good, and if you’ve never smelled the vintage, you’d probably be pleased with it. It’s worth a try!

    Tea is Marco Polo

When I think of Levi jeans I think about San Francisco, when I lived there, I use to frequent the store in Union Sq. As an ode to the Bay Area I am doing a week of Henry Rose scents.

    SOTD Dark is Night
    Vetiver & Freesia
    Patchouli & Vanilla Bean

An interview with Ms Pfeirffer for Elle magazine: Which of your fragrances smells most like Cat Woman?

MP: Oooh, “Dark as Night.” That one smells like you’re out late at night in a place you’re definitely not supposed to be!”

A week of Henry Rose scents is intriguing! After you mentioned Fog, I looked it up, it sounds like something I’d enjoy. :)
Another scent that reminds me of SF is Thymes Eucalyptus Perfume, it has that bracing herbal/green vibe that a seaside walk brings.
Some of my favorite jeans were Levis. Back in 2001, there was a silver tab design that was perfect for my athletic frame. Naturally, they were discontinued!

And now I think I must turn those two past-it bananas in the kitchen into banana bread ASAP. We are getting more snow (right now), so baking seems like an appropriate move?

Wore 31 RC yesterday and was glad not to find it overpowering (as I had last time I wore it). I may head in that direction again today.

Now, off to have a second cup of coffee with my husband. Meeting around 10 a.m. to chat over coffee has been one of the absolute nicest silver linings of WFH.

We got like eight inches of snow overnight so I am joining you in the (at least internal) screaming. It hasn’t been the worst ever weatherwise, but my husband slipped on the ice almost two months ago and broke a bone in his wrist: the cast comes off tomorrow (we HOPE). It’s been a symbol of the general awfulness of this season. I am so done with winter.

I love using over ripe bananas for banana nut bread. I purchase several extra and once they are nearly black, freeze them to increase the sweetness. It also increases the banana flavor, be sure to save/use the juices from the frozen banana, it adds moisture.

I don’t really care for bananas (I think it’s a texture issue), but banana bread, pancakes, or in an almond/vanilla smoothie, and I’m all in!
Have you tried adding a touch of rum extract (in addition to vanilla extract) to your banana nut bread? It adds a nice touch.

Enabler pins abound… because it came up here, I decided to get a BUB of Black Perfecto EdP (a tester bottle) as well as a small bottle of the EdT to try. Definitely a difference. So far, I’m preferring EdP for its deeper lushness. EdT might be something I’ll like in warmer weather. There’s a dryness to it vs the EdP.

    Wearing Tom Ford Jasmin Rouge.

    Nice, warmer day! Finally! 🌞🌻

No breakfast yet, I am glued to my desk just having my second cup of coffee and ready to run the errands that I postponed yesterday due to the weather.

I talked to my high school friends yesterday and it was very cheerful and uplifting. We have not met since Fall 2019 and we miss sharing good moments like before. Unfortunately, the possibility to physically meet is not an option this year either. We don’t feel comfortable, especially if eating outside is involved. I want to be positive about better times arriving soon, even though I sometimes I feel very depressed and hopeless about it.

    Happy Tuesday, everyone! 🌻

Had a dentist apt this morning so had to pick something super soft and unobtrusive, so I went with Oscar de la Renta Lavender. I love this one! It’s a soft milky lavender with just a touch of the lightest spices. Very close to the skin. Great for bedtime too!

The OdlR Lavender sounds really nice! I have the first Live in Love, in the green and gold box; it’s a nice, white floral daytime scent, light enough for the office or workplace. I reviewed it a while ago as part of my May Muguet Marathon, but as I said then (and just confirmed), it’s not really a muguet scent, to my nose (or hyacinth, which is listed as one of the stronger notes). I get more of the orange flower and jasmine. Apparently there’s a newer version called Live in Love New York, in a blue box.

I’m not even wearing jeans today – darn.
Copying Robin in Bois des Iles.
Had a “Franken-scent” experience last night: I tried a sample of something (shall remain unnamed!) yesterday evening around 8 or so. Didn’t like the sample a whole lot, didn’t hate it – put it into my burgeoning freebie/swap pile.
A couple hours later, I applied my usual Nivea hand cream and went to bed. As I’m lying there, I notice a terrible smell, and I wonder if the kids are burning something plasticky on the stove. Nope. It’s Nivea combined with that sample. Truly awful combination! I still smelled it when I woke up briefly at 5. Boy.
    Happy Tuesday!

What a nice (blue jean-themed) collection of tea pots, cups and a ceramic French press (?). I am wearing Bogue Profumo MEM, which I normally love but is not suiting me today for some reason. I am hiding in my office with my window open, since I have a new colleague who keeps reminding everybody about the scent-free policy. Drinking a cold coffee brew and thinking of good ol’ Pepys, who made it through the previous / “last” Great Plague of London and much else besides, god(s) rest his soul.

Confessing I’ve only read excerpts, too, as well as the Claire Tomalin biography of Pepys. Not sure I’ll ever get to the unabridged nine volume version of the diary…

I loved the Perenyi and might look for her garden book, which I guess is how she is best known.

The Bronski house is good but not as good — unless you have a huge interest in the subject you are fine skipping it.

During our library remodel, we relocated to three large, airplane hangar-sized buildings. I had a colleague who used to complain about my perfume from the complete opposite side of the structure.
Same colleague would also apply highly-fragranced lavender lotion to his face. 😒😒 *stinkeye*

I had one of those! During a remodel, several of us had to share a large open space, and one colleague would pointedly open the doors whenever I wore any scent. Same colleague brought a smelly lunch every day, heated it up in the shared microwave, and ate it at her desk. The space would smell all afternoon.

Drinking Stumptown Hair Bender coffee…bought myself a sampler trio for Xmas as I was buying it as a gift for someone else too (the perfect excuse) and they were all excellent. No affiliation…very good beans.

Burning a B&BW Lemon, Lavender and Shortbread candle and wearing Solstice Scents Estate Cacao…notes are Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Raw Cacao, Estate Vanilla, Aged Patchouli, Pomegranate and Raspberry.

Have x-rays and a follow up w/ the neurosurgeon on Thursday for my neck. Thursday is also the 2 year anniversary of my mother’s passing from pancreatic cancer…many feelings this week…grateful for this community and the wonderful distraction of fragrance.♥️

Ohh, sending you comforting thoughts and many hugs, this week is huge! I think B &BW works single-wick candles are on sale, I will purchase a White Tea & Sage candle, I love it’s soft refreshing fragrance.
I don’t often burn candles, it’s time to restock so White Tea/Sage it is. :) I wish they would re-release Aloe & Clover and Fresh Waterfall, I loved those two scents.
I came across an old Green Teatherapy candle from the Healing Garden, circa 1990s. I really wish it was still in production, what a glorious scent, with many wonderful memory associations.

Spent most of the morning on the phone with the doctor’s office. I called my doctor yesterday morning saying that I have 7 days left on a medication that I need. She called me today saying that it wasn’t a medication she would fill but I would need to make an appointment for a specialist to do that. Had to ask about what to do if an appointment is months away and I can’t be without it. Crickets on her end. Now I am trying to think about what needs to be done. Can’t seem to get an appointment right now. Wearing Deneuve extrait right now and going to work. It amazes me of what doctors will refuse to do.

Won’t the doctor who prescribed it before give you another script? Here if no appointment is available the relevant doc will at least write the script with enough to last until an appointment becomes available. I would imagine it’s a common problem with chronic conditions.

I’m wearing PG Cuir d’Iris since SheriG wore it yesterday and because I could still smell last night’s Cuir Ottoman on my arms this morning. I’m trying out evening showers this week since it’s been a challenge for both me and my boyfriend to have warm showers in the morning. Our shower water takes a ridiculously long time to warm up in the winter mornings. So far the biggest consideration is that my evening perfume may still remain in the morning and force my hand to wear something similar for the day.

My sciatica pain is about 95% better, thank goodness. I’m back to working today. I will take a couple breaks for stretching and will stand and work as much as I can manage.

I’m sitting here in some cherry – BDK Rouge Smoking, the first sprays of a blind bought decant. Luckily, it’s a love. Wearing Jubilation 25 today and my samples of Vol de Nuit and Jicky have arrived. I got them from perfumeniche (Canadian decant site) and they threw in two freebies even though I only ordered two samples to begin with, which I find very generous. The extra samples are Bandit and Bois d’Armenie, neither of which I’ve ever tried so I was excited to receive them.

For those who were wondering what I thought of Vol de Nuit, I think it’s beautiful but ultimately a bit too pale for me. The opening is gorgeous, this galbanum-jasmine (or maybe orange blossom) so sparkling that it seems to fizz. The drydown is a powdery spin on Guerlain’s usual pastry theme, but with more sandalwood and much cooler. It’s soft and subtle in the EDT format.

Bandit was a beast of its own, that’s for sure. There’s some green in the opening and a touch of floral in the drydown, but primarily it’s thick, almost roasted leather with a note of smoke. Not the campfire of Lonestar Memories, cigarette smoke. Uncompromising and totally unisex, even masculine.

My interpretation of CP is laid back and androgynous which just happens to be, ahem, the style I’m most comfortable in! 😆 So today it’s Sel de Vetiver layered with 4711 Kumquat & Myrrh. Scents from The Different Company are notoriously light but this one is a hard hitter WHEN compared to K&M. I actually have SdeV as a base and just spritz down in K&V every few hours!

Banana bread is an American specialty, it’s a long tine since I’ve had any.

In Must de Cartier from my oldish but not vintage bottle, I have a vintage BUB because for me Must is the green Shalimar I always call it that and really is a must, feeling I need to justify the amount.

Not much of a difference but the vintage is more animalic in the drydown stage, honestly they are both lovely if you love Must.

I believe you would like the oldish better then, I never see it mentioned here, but I was quite sure you had tested it, for those who like Shalimar, Must is definitely a must. It keeps very well and is very affordable here.

Oh, and this is definitely so they can save money on insurance. They eliminated the full time jobs to be replaced with part time workers. The part timers won’t ever get enough weekly hours to be eligible for insurance or vac/sick days.

Since there was some discussion over make-up in the weekend poll, I thought I would share something I just read from the Cliff’s Notes version of Real Simple. Tips for wearing make-up under a mask (and not look like a mess when you take it off – my own interpretation):

    0. Find a mask color that complements your eyes

    1. Use a water-based primer and use a brush to apply

    2. Use metallic shimmer eye-shadow

    3. Thicken your lashes so eyes are drawn to the eyes

    4. Do not use lip gloss; instead, choose a long-wear matte lipstick in a bright pop of color. Let it dry for a few minutes and set it with translucent powder.

I’m wearing St Clair Scents Eve, which has become one of my most favorite fragrances. Did my big three-hour panel this morning. It was very intense but went really well with excellent contributions all around, including mine of course!
On the Texas weather roller coaster which took us from the deep freeze last week to 77 yesterday! I’m not complaining but do have whiplash.
I’m about done reading Phillip Roth’s novel Nemesis, which has been very engaging. It’s about kids in Newark during the polio epidemic of 1944. An interesting and often chilling counterpoint to our current situation.

Scent Of The Day is Casmir.
    I watched The Nose.
It was a lovely travel movie,
It begins with a beautiful woman, a fashion reporter talking about how hard it is to be the master perfumer at Dior. Then, a man who appears to be an in house pianist-band leader for the perfume department explains about top, heart and base notes of perfume, using musical chords as a metaphor.
Then we see our valiant hero at his weekend home in Grasse and the beautiful women who are flower growers, the beautiful women who dance for him when he visits Amalfi and the beautiful women who do a very different dance in Bali,. We see him talking with a beautiful French actress at the Cannes film festival, as well Natalie Portman (who actually lives in Paris, where Dior’s offices are). In between these beautiful women, he discovers that imortelle, bergamot, jasmine, ginger and ambergris all make good ingredients for perfume. (The ambergris is harvested by weatherbeaten middle aged men, so he doesn’t actually visit them). One gets the impression, Dior is one of the American independent small business all botanical artisans, instead of a division of a mega Corp, which of course uses aldehydes and other laboratory molecules, and mass market scents. There is or instance, no trip to Northern New Jersey.
The movie ends with a beautiful women declaring that the hardest thing for a Nose is to decide when a scent is done. This presumably why Dior does not have a release to highlight in the film.

For some reason I thought the standardized tests were being done away with but then I probably made a mistake in that it was probably a proposal for schools not to take them into consideration if it would negatively impact an application. Or it could very well be for another test altogether!

I know that some university systems are phasing them out, but current students are still doing them because everything is up in the air. (The University of California system has phased out SAT/ACT scores starting with incoming freshmen in 2023, for example.)
