Hump Day, World Standards Day and National Dessert Day (oops, I celebrated that last night). We have a whole bunch of birthdays: Katherine Mansfield, E. E. Cummings, Hannah Arendt, Roger Moore, Ralph Lauren, Usher. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in the first Frédéric Malle fragrance I ever smelled (I think — at any rate, it's the first one I took notes on, and my notes say "magical"), En Passant.
Reminder: on 10/16 we're going back to the beginning...revisit a fragrance you tried in your early days as a perfumista. Suggested by springpansy.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

having toast with a hazelnut chocolate spread, dessert for breakfast.
Ran out of the apartment to get the kids to their bus, sprayed Shalimar somewhere on my body..it was so fast..
Dressed today like a NYer, all black.
Shalimar and all black sounds perfect!
Agreed
What’s your lippie today?
I am using a sample of Clarins water lip stain in Red Water, it doesn’t kiss off my mask. So far so good
Speaking of hazelnut chocolate spread, I’m so happy to see that there are still 3 Le Pain Quotidien’s open in NYC. One of my favorite casual restaurants and where I first fell for hazelnut spread.
what happen to Maison Kayser?
Closed, sadly. Very sadly.
where now to buy a good baguette? Orwashers baguette has not been so good lately
I just ordered some pistachio spread yesterday, now I have to figure out how to get chocolate in there.
Hmm, I love pistachio spread
There’s a French bakery near us that sells pistachio croissants. They’re incredible.
May I ask where you got the pistachio spread?:)
I ordered from a company called Fastachi, but I have never tried anything from them before. They do have a nice selection of nut butters, so I got pistachio and mixed nut.
You’ll post reviews of the nut spreads when you get them? ??
Sure!
Ahhh, classic New Yorker! Shalimar and all-black, chic!
Hi all!
In one of my all-time favorites, Dzongkha. Stony iris incense all day.
I bought something scented and had to share! I’ve been buying more and more yarn and this one really spoke to me. It’s made with 20% hinoki do it has a light woody smell. Kind of pricy but I’ve never heard of anything like it.

(Not affiliated!)
Have a great and safe day all!
15%, sorry! ?
How cool is that?!
With all the money you save with your perfume deals, you can make the scented yarn perfume math free!?
I don’t know, I’m about to blow the rest of my non-existent budget for the rest of the year on something special! ?
Lemming. Darn it! I love textiles and knitting with this would be dreamy!
Doesn’t it look so squishy and gorgeous? Her entire inventory is a dream. This is not my only purchase from her.
That sounds delightful. My mother would have loved that when she was still active in fiber arts, I didn’t inherit that talent.
Knitting is familial as well for me. I’m the third generation. ?
Wow! That’s really interesting, what will you make with it?
I’m thinking a simple t-shirt, maybe with a simple knit 2 purl shifting pattern to make diagonal stripes. We’ll see when I get it though.
interesting! I wonder how it retains scent after washing, though?
Not sure! But it’ll get a very gentle wash, so maybe?
You smell fantastic.
Yay a fellow knitter. I have made a couple of things from habu textiles yarn including a cowl from a linen lambs wool blend (it doesn’t look like it is available at the moment) and a bag out of a linen cotton paper (https://www.habutextiles.com/products/a-188?variant=19886058373190). I can’t wait to hear about your experience with the hinoki yarn!
I’ll definitely post when I work with it. I’m about 45% through a merino/mohair sweater at the moment.
I really do love how Habu has so many non-wool options. It is way too hot for more than one or two wool sweaters.
Wow. Almost enough to make me take up knitting.
I love it but I choose really simple patterns. It’s mindless to chat and knit, or watch TV.
HA, I cannot crochet and breathe at the same time.
We all have different skills 🙂
Crochet is a bit trickier! There are so many incorrect places you can insert the hook. I’m half-___ing a crochet sweater at the moment too.
My grandmother tried to teach me knitting and crochet years ago…I suppose I should try again, but I was pretty hopeless!
Wow, gorgeous! I agree with Robin, it’s almost enough to make me take up knitting but alas, that’s not in my wheelhouse.
Thanks for the link, I forwarded it to a friend who is an avid knitter.
This site is a wonderland!
Oh how cool, you could make a good-smelling woobie! ?
I could, but I am truly never that cold in Houston! Plus that would likely be a $300 hoodie….
Yikes, you’re right. Pricey.
I was in a hurry to be on time for physical therapy, and ended up grabbing Paestum Rose out of my decant stash. So far, all of the Eau d’Italie fragrances that I’ve tried have been winners.
Oh you smell wonderful! That’s an early one for me, too.
Yum.
Inspired by the Black Narcissus, in many dabs of Vetiver essential oil, a gorgeous double distilled Haitian vetiver from Eden Botanicals that is very clear and clean, almost like it was made to be worn just as it is. I purchased a small sample vial for $3.00 so if you have been wanting to try some really good quality essential oils this is the way to do it.
P.S. ordered some Hawaiian vetiver yesterday so I can compare all the vetivers. Apparently, vetiver grass has been planted in Hawaii to help with erosion and because it is a lovely grass. Just Google Hawaiian vetiver and the company will come up in the results.
Many moons ago I had samples from somewhere (could be Eden, or not) of two or three kinds of vetiver. Great fun, and yes, they were all perfectly wearable by themselves, mixed with lotion or a carrier oil.
Good morning Y’all,
Wearing 3 big sprays of Replica Lipstick On, and feeling girly girl! Don’t think I’ve needed or worn lipstick a single time since the whole masking started, but at least I smell like it! 🙂
I like that one!
It’s funny – I never wore much lipstick before, but always tinted moisturizer and mascara. Now I don’t do much else, but I do wear lipstick for my Zoom meetings. Nothing bright, just a little something.
I had my very first (ever!) Zoom meeting yesterday….and I HATED it! LOL I know it’s what we gotta do, but I’m a people person and zooming is so impersonal and BLECK! That being said, wearing a mask all day everyday is a real drag too! 🙂
Decided against the CP today since I found a small spray of Replica By the Fireplace that I forgot about. It smells so good.
Nice.
One of my favorite scents this time of year.
Happy to join in on National Desserts Day, lol.
I too celebrated last night, Robin. A friend brought us back probably the best molten chocolate cake I’ve ever had from a bakery in upstate NY. Nuked it for 40 seconds and dug in. Great ending to a heck of a Tue.
SOTD: Calling All Angels (again)
Happy to see sunshine outside today!
That sounds delicious. I’m happy to join national desserts day any day!
Oh, you had a way better excuse than I did! I just ate way too much of a pint of Jeni’s Peanut Butter chocolate chip while watching tv.
Woke up in Coco Mademoiselle and blogged about Honour woman extrait. I am debating on either LADDM or Les Annees 25 BIS today. Now I can say fall has really started. Started a new candle yesterday. Went with Apple Weather. Every candle I use makes more space. The next one will be either Lilac Blossom or Fresh Balsam. Talked to my supervisor yesterday and she didn’t quite understand why my breaks are a problem now after almost 7 months in. The product and customers take precedence over taking my break when they think I should.
How did it end the talk as to next steps? Maybe she needs to see the chaos that would ensue were you to take your break at the exact time you were scheduled to do so?
Anyone here have Ava Luxe fragrances? I’m still going back in time just a bit to my MUA days and wearing her Madeline, which is a fun holidayish gourmand with spices, brandy, fig, vanilla, amber. I bought it back in the day but never wore it much. It’s just not suited to every day, but I still love it.
I have a bunch of samples from Ava Luxe, from waaay back in the day when she still did sample sets. I’ve also got a perfume oil of No. 23, which is one of my top five favorite perfumes of all time. Sadly discontinued.
Agree – No. 23 was wonderful.
I liked her Incense quite a bit, too. I may need to revisit her site.
I’m not sure why she discontinued No. 23; it was one of her best.
I bought her Milk – love it! Have a couple more samples, but need time to test them.
Wow, I must have some somewhere!
I still have quite a few actually! I was a big fan for a while. Well, I still am really. I think most of the ones I own still hold up as really nice perfumes. I only have a sample of Madeline, but I remember liking it.
My first sample order contained Tam Dao, and I thought it was sharp and gross. I still don’t love the edt on me (it’s great on my best friend!), but I do love the edp, so I’m in that today.
Almost twins! I’m in the edt.
Hey, that was in my first or second order 🙂
It was probably your influence that made me order it! NST has informed many a sample search.
🙂
Wearing VC&A Bois d’Iris – this was one of the first iris fragrances I bought after discovering niche.
My favorite iris, you smell great!
Ditto!
Thank you both 🙂
very nice!
Indeed!
House twins!
I love when it happens
I am no iris lover, but this is a really nice one
You smell amazing.
I’m in Tam Dao.
I went to get my pre-employment physical and picture for my new work badge this morning. Less than 2 weeks now! I’m getting excited.?
In smelly news, my sample pack from Luckyscent finally arrived yesterday. I put 4 different samples on at once and when my daughter came into my room, she was like “are you wearing perfume today? it smells like a grandma” Lol.? Duly noted.
Lol!?
I know.? At least I can always count on her honest opinion.?
Did they take your picture with mask on, or off? Just curious. 😀
Off, but that is a good question. I asked too when I called and made my appointment. Of course I will work with my mask on, but at least patients will know what I *really* look like.?
🙂
Any faves from the new samples?
Exciting times!
How exciting! And the count down begins!
I received my Kulfi sample set yesterday, and I’ve started my morning with Kulfi Orange Blossom. Yes. This works for me. Sadly I don’t have any of the original to compare it to, so I have to rely on my memory, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s a great direction in which to take a flanker.
Sitting on hands so as not to order that set.
Oooooh. This might be a persistent lemming…
Hiram Green Vivacious. Because I just got this little decant (thank you, Oakland Fresca!!) and it’s one of the few violets I can stand on myself. Probably overall more spring than autumn for me, and a quiet fragrance – but lovely!!
I love violet, but did not totally love Vivacious, can’t remember why. So glad it works for you!
SOTD is Costes. Not for the CP – it was a relatively late arrival to my collection – just because I love it. Goes with the camel-colored sweater I’m wearing today after freezing most of yesterday morning. Okay, not literally – we keep the thermostat at 70 most days and rely on sunshine through the windows for more warmth, and apparently my aging bones are not yet acclimated to the cooler weather we’re having lately.
We haven’t turned on our heat yet this year – it’s about 64 in the house. Very cool but survivable with a couple layers of fleece!
Yikes – my back is seizing up just thinking about it! I’d be in so many layers that I’d look like the little kid in a snow suit who can’t even put his arms down at his sides. And socks! Lots of socks! 😉
Lol – I think we are just cheap. It encourages me to get up and move around!
SheriG, I am in your camp! Springpansy, I tip my hat to you!
I’m on hold, waiting to talk to people I dread talking to. Figured I would post my sotd. I’m wearing Shalimar eau de cologne. I layered it with Korres Lemon and Basil body cream, to bring out the lemon.
It’s the last day in the 60’s here. Cold and rain expected tomorrow into next week.
What do you think of Korres products? I see their perfume for really affordable prices or maybe the body products are better?
I think that the body products are great. I only have one perfume, and honestly it feels/smells more like a body spray to me. I really recommend the jasmine body cream, it’s pretty awesome.
Thank you, very helpful.
Second that! The body products are very good and smell great. I had one perfume and disliked it. Failed BB….my mum uses it as bathroomspray I think.
Thank you Hilde.
I agree with lillyjo on the Korres jasmine body butter. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find it anywhere right now. Their Guava one is a good companion to Samsara.
Another yes for Korres. I’m using their Fig body butter today which is great… fresh and not too sweet. The Guava is also nice. I got into the line about a year ago when I started using their Black Pine skin care. The Pure Greek Olive line of shower gels is excellent and most have a body butter to match. The only products I do not like are in the Olive line… the Crepe Rescue Body Balm bar and Intensive Body Treatment. These two products are heavily perfumed with a LVEB-like scent which I cannot bear. No affiliation with the brand… I just like the unusual and natural scents they offer and the quality of their products that I have tried so far is excellent.
I hope your conversation goes well.
Afrer forty minutes on hold, I still had to leave another message. So still waiting. Thank you though, fingers crossed for the eventual conversation!
Hi Shalimar twin..how do you smell? 🙂
We smell fantastic!
Phooey on a 40-minute hold time! That bites.
At least you have a gorgeous perfume collection to wear as you wait…
Goodness you smell super good!
National Dessert Day! I can wholeheartedly support that! I am back after a week away and wearing Santal Kardamon this morning.
I hope you had a good break. I keep thinking about your oak tree. I read some things about fire damage but coukdn’t find any info re. Smoke stressed trees. I hope it comes back in spring.
How is the Santal Kardamon?
This is only from a sample, both on skin and blottar (or mouillette if you’re fancy), but it’s something new.
Or to be frank I was just looking for the nearest counter where I could ask directions to the liquour store hidden so cleverly in the deepest depths of one of Stockholms largest departement stores, while at the same time having a more commercially viable reason to bother a paid sales clerk it’s precious time..
I settled for Byredo.
I thought I heard some influencer talk about a new release from them, but when I asked they pointed to a bottle containing a deep, reddish potion I wasn’t familiar with – Tobacco Mandarin.
The mandarin note was delightful, but so fieeting it didn’t deserve to be mentioned in the name.
Maybe creating a true mandarin note is such a feat even thirty seconds of it’s appearence is cause to celebrate?
Whatever the case, what’s left is predominantly leather.
Or so my I’m-so-well-versed-in-perfumery, recession narcissist self was thinking, going from “aah, suederal!” to “but there’s a hint of saffron…Safraleine!” before I checked the official nores online.
And alongside the notes I can’t detect there was the one that was obviously too smart for me – labdanum!
If you don’t know that smell, wear this fragrance on your skin, and after fifteen minutes smell again while thinking “Plasticine”.
That’s labdanum.
Body shop Satsuma Body Mist is a cheap but pretty nice mandarin scent. For me labdanum is more plump leather than anything else.
Ha, you have mostly talked me out of trying TM. Then again I probably was never going to see it anyway.
Hope you found the liquor department 🙂
In Miss Dior after a long time, I really love its lotv note, which I enjoy more than Diorissimo, probably a sacrilège to say this.
—> = ^ . ^ = <—
*plugs ears*
La la la, I didn't hear that! 😀
?
HA!
???
*weeps*
Wearing Caron Violette Precieuses which is a lovely dry violet leaf, flower and woody scent. My bottle is old enough to smell of Indian sandalwood.
The original Caron Violette Precieuses was gorgeous. I emphatically do not, however, recommend the reformulated version. Very screechy and unbearable. And sad.
O Robin, a perfume that smells ‘magical’! To me, that would mean an immediate search for the best discount and orderrrrrr!
SOTD is HdP 1804 because it arrived yesterday. Some of you wore it in summer and then I “needed” a third pineapple perfume ???
The room smells of coffee. My lovely neighbour donated a Nespresso candle that she hated. I love it!
I think part of why I found it magical was that I did not think I would ever love a lilac perfume because it would be too futzy for me — this was back in 2003, before I realized there actually weren’t enough lilac perfumes 🙂
My SOTD is vintage Lauren, in celebration of Ralph Lauren’s birthday, one of my favorite designers, and a fellow New Yorker.
I woke up very late today, must get a walk in before noon to beat the heat.
I stayed up late reading The Other Side Of The Sun, by Madeline L’Engle, the quirky aunts, and relationships are so gorgeous, nuanced and quite funny!
I love when you get into a good book..
You smell so good! Happy Birthday to RL.
And thank you again for your delicious cuban pork recipe awhile back. I made it yesterday and it is so, so fantastic! Looking forward to my supper of a Cuban sandwich!
Hi Gail, I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Did you make the Cuban black beans to go with it? Let me know if you need the recipe.
I don’t have the bean recipe, but would love it! Thank you!!
Hi Gail, here’s the link to the recipe! Enjoy. 🙂

No CP today, I wanted to wear Cafe Tuberosa, perfect for the cold weather. I bravely biked to work in the dark and fog and got rained on on the return.
But today my colleagues brought some deserts, very fitting for today, so I had marshmallow salad and a donut. I could have had apple pie with icecream too, but was too full. But I skipped dinner to compensate
I love Cafe Tuberosa. You smell super good.
Happy birthday Katherine Mansfield! I get so much pleasure from reading her stories. Antony Alpers biography is excellent for anyone interested in her life.
I am going to find a gem in ScentSpirit’s sample stash today, such a treat to have so many samples to test. I delve into them as I work, interspersed with gazing out of the window. Had a bit of a snow flurry yesterday, all gone now but still chilly.
Dang, those flurries keep hanging on for you.
Two days of stormy rain here in the PNW, but bright sunshine through the windows today. Am in Jo Malone Poppy Barley, which feels very harvest-y to me. Like picking apples on a day that started crisp, but warmed up.
Pretty much same weather sequence here in the mid atlantic east!
I was thinking of Hiris, the hunt for which set off my perfume obsession, but it’s really cold today, so I’ve decided on Tobacco Vanille – totally not like Hiris 🙂
You smell great, even if you’re not in Hiris!
Baiser de Russie as I headed out to lunch with a friend. That time of year where it feels chilly in the morning hours then warms up nicely.
I stopped in our local Bed Bath Beyond, which is closing, since everything is on sale. Sad to see it close. Nothing of interest, other than the Revlon long-wearing liquid lipstick I discovered after COVID was 40% off. No mask transfer. It feels a bit sticky on lips, but that is solved by a quick swipe of a lip balm. My makeup choices have been permanently affected. I now only use CC cream to blur things a bit, no mascara, no blush. Just eyebrows and a tiny bit of eyeliner if I feel special.
And, I bought a very cute quilted nylon backpack at Target. It’s perfect for my travels.
If you used “No mask transfer” pre-COVID, you would have gotten quizzical looks.
Wearing one of my earlier ‘fumes, Oscar de la Renta. This is another vintage find, just a partial bottle. My friend gifted me my original bottle back in the day!
Awesome! This is a contender for me on Friday. I have to see where I put my sample.
I hope you found your sample! I’m still getting whiffs of it.
So good!
It sure is!
It was so gorgeous way back when, wasn’t it?
It sure was!
Absolue d Osmanthe from a sample. Not bad, pretty light.
I’m in Cartier Santos, for the cp. It’s spicy and woody with cumin presenting itself in the first few minutes, but that’s fine. I love the drydown. Pretty certain it was Elisa P who suggested this one to me, when I was first figuring out that men’s fragrances could be pretty great! I miss her voice in these here parts.
Me too, re: Elisa P.
Cuir Ottoman just because it’s so good.
I need some positive vibes right now haha. So this AM when I was leaving for work, I couldn’t find my ring set in either of the two little trays I always put them. I came home a little upset yesterday from some son drama and I have no idea where I set them but I know they’re home somewhere! I was in a hurry so just left without wearing them but I feel super weird and am obsessed with finding them as soon as I get home. Please send super strong vibes that they’re just on a counter somewhere that I see ASAP. Ugh.
Positive vibes sent!
Also sending good thoughts! I hope you find them quickly!
Have you found it?
I did! Just got home and found it in a random drawer in my jewelry box that I never use! Don’t know why I did that but oh well lol!
Yay!
Oh good!
That’s a relief!
SOTD = Van Cleef & Arpels Rose Rouge
Fruity sweet gourmand rose patchouli ?
https://www.instagram.com/p/CGVrUW-BaI9/?igshid=echdy8i5m6vo
Will check back in later. Need to go for a quick walk because I did not do it the past 2 days due to the yucky weather!
Enjoy your walk! ?
Thank you. Actually, it has been 4 days without the walk since I took a break over the weekend having walked more last week. In any case, I think I only have 2 more weeks before I have to say bye-bye to the after work walk! ?
Ah, going to be getting too dark after work…
Gorgeous weather here today! A little chilly this morning, though. But not cold enough to warrant turning on the heat for overnight. Now I’m finally getting the kind of weather I wanted this past spring. ???
I’ve been propping up one of my feet today every so often to relieve a sore toe. I did an EPIC job bruising it last week, and it is still purple in a couple of places. Annoying!
SOTD = more L’Artisan Voleur de Roses. Still several wearings of this in the little sample vial…
Such perfect weather! I mean, a sore toe is a bummer, but a good excuse to kick back and take it easy lol!
I can slack a little bit, but I am the “washer in chief” here… if I don’t do it, dishes and laundry pile up. I’m also the designated cat box cleaner.
I have badly injured.a toe recently TWICE–two different toes. It’s awful. The first one (big toe) is still not completely healed after a month. The latest one (second from end) may be broken but I’ve learned they do nothing for that. They said just tape it, and regularly ice it and elevate it, and take ibuprofen. So that’s what I’m doing. But between my right foot bad toes and left side bad hip, my walking is pretty pathetic. This morning I went in to have an MRI on my left hip. I’m very claustrophobic and so I got sedatives ahead of time and made it through, although I really hate that experience. The sounds are just too unworldly and freaky. I wore Chameleon because it’s light and bright. Now it’s late afternoon but I need to go back to sleep because that Valium is still making me muddled.
I don’t think my toe is broken, thankfully. I just stubbed it getting out of the shower one day, which sounds stupid even though it happened to me.
Sorry about your toe. Thanks for posting the godwit story yesterday
Thanks. I’m glad that you liked the link. I checked it out after your initial mention about those birds.
Youch! Funny you should be wearing Voleur de Roses…Coumarin, under his IG account asked how VC&A Rose Rouge compares to VdR and my response was I recalled VdR smelling like moldy wet basement ??♀️ but of course, it can’t smell like that for you!
Yeah, I wanted to throw up after smacking my toe, since it hurt that much.
No moldy wet basement for me with VdR. I get a medium-weight patch. There might be the barest hint of rose petals in the far drydown.
