Tuesday scent of the day 9/29

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2020 240 Comments

It's Tuesday and World Heart Day. Take care of your heart, folks! Birthdays today: Elizabeth Gaskell, Colin Dexter and Diana Vreeland. What fragrance are you wearing?

I am in Maya Njie Vanilj, which I bought unsniffed after Jessica's review. I literally put it on 2 minutes ago, but so far, yum, cardamom. (And speaking of buying unsniffed, don't, and Donatella will be dropping by on Thursday.) Tea at the moment is Organic Tippy Colombian from Upton, with a little shave of nutmeg.

Reminder: on 10/2, our subject is On the back roads by the rivers of my memory...do what you like with the lyric from the 1968 song Gentle on My Mind. Suggested by Mossyberry.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the limited edition Pullman Railway Carriage teapot is £99 at Ceramic Inspirations in the UK.

And I am joining you. I have a large sample and always before, I’ve thought nope. But today… never say never.

What do we think – EDT vs EDP? If I buy, it will be the modern version from discounters as I don’t have the patience to search for vintage (unless I run across some at a garage sale).

Glad to hear you are enjoying Mitsouko today!

I have the EDP (I think my bottle is around 6-7 years old). I am not sure I actually tried the EDT (maybe I forgot?). At least not lately… Unfortunately Mitsouko is hard to find in stores here. A side-by-side test would be interesting.

EDP for me. I have both. EDT is crisper and good in summer or spring. EDP has a creamier dry down which has me sniffing my arm throughout the day on colder days like today.

I find the newest releases from Amouage are not as interesting as the old ones. Lyric is a big favorite of mine!

I lost interest pretty much after Honour. Honour was a marked change in Amouage. Honour is good but everything else they released after was too generic, hardly worth the name Amouage.

I totally agree with you. I love Honour, but after everything from Amouage has been likes, not loves. I own few of the new ones, which I enjoy, but not as much as Gold, Jubilation 25, Lyric, etc and the Library collection, which is so beautiful!

            29 September 2020 at 1:19 pm

Would you include Beloved as being too generic? I kind of achter in that the older Amouages seemed more complex, but I think Beloved belongs there as well. I happen to really like Myths Woman as well, but it does not have that typical richness the older events had.

Beloved is kind of iffy on skin. I think it’s the herbal aspect that rubs me wrong.

    Hi all!

Wearing a touch of Bois de Violette today, just a dab on my wrists. I’m baking up my focaccia this afternoon so I wanted something that will be gone by then. After that, who knows? I’ve been in a vintage Poison mood to be honest….

I was thinking about dropping cauliflower and anchovy fillets in the dough of my focaccia. I love that there are so many possibilities.

    Have a great day!

Try zaatar, if you can find it. It gives the focaccia a middle eastern flare..Or another thing I do is make focaccia normally and then add zaatar to the olive oil I dip it in.

      Rosemary and chives for me.

I know what you mean about being careful of fragrance on your wrist while kneading dough! When I was making bread a couple of times a week, I’d use my shoulders and elbow crooks for testing.

Testing Shalimar EdP on one arm, Le Lion on the other
The opening for Shalimar is more lemony, Le Lion has more smoke.
Now its been a few hours, Shalimar is at its vanilla skin scent phase and Le Lion is now leather and patchouli.
The lasting power of Le Lion is pretty impressive on my scent eating skin.

In other news, some NYC hoods have a rise in COVID cases and governor meatball is threatening a shut down. Mask on, use Italian gestures to express yourself.

Between kids in school and the Jewish holidays I’m not surprised at all. For Rosh Hashanah I saw many large gatherings in the streets, at least outdoors but still risky.

Our co. just had it’s latest town hall and still no plans to go back to the office.

I love Le Lion, I’ll save you a place in line when it’s available in the US (or vice versa cara)
I am glad that you like it. I still don’t see the Coromandel comparison but I am awaiting a small decant to do a proper test. We didn’t get along in years past.

Headed out to a doctor’s appointment. Flu shot and hoping to procure a medical exemption for jury duty. With my heath problems, the last thing I need is to be in a room full of people right now.
    Have a great day all!

ST, still doing my toast every morning but may have to slow it down since I can’t exercise yet because of this pain in my back. I tried a new bread from a bakery that is excellent, I found it in union square. But its so so expensive.

Shalimar extrait yesterday and Genre today. Genre is sooo good. I love it every time I wear it. I usually save it for fall and winter and it’s not even close to those temps here right now. Still in the 90s, although it is cooling to the 50s and 60s at night.

Dark and rainy. I’m wearing Gourmand Coquin. We’re shut down again for the next month in Montreal due to Covid. I thought it might not happen until flu season got into full swing but no, here we are. 17 more days until we head out to California. Thank heavens for dual citizenship, the closed border doesn’t affect us.

I am so sorry for Montreal..good grief..just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving.
I am glad you are leaving soon, but since you are coming from a red zone don’t expect the USA to greet you with open arms. From friends that I know of that have traveled back in forth from Canada to USA found the USA side to be the most difficult. (but Canadians are notorious for being always nice all the time) 🙂

They do not have the right to refuse us entry, I don’t care how pleasant or not they are. Actually my experience has been that the Canadian border guards are far more persnickety than the American ones.

Actually we’re not being that nice to Americans right now — there are stories of nasty notes and punctured tires, and a car with Texas plates got graffitied in Victoria just last week, I think. Our premier here in BC even took the step of telling people coming in from the U.S. to change their plates if they’re going to be living here. We saw a California car in the neighbourhood the other day with a big note stating that they’re here legally on on a work permit.

Yes, we are actually moving to Vancouver Island in April and the first thing we are going to do is register the car to get BC plates! With Quebec plates our car would probably be set on fire.

Let’s hope by April that no one feels threatened, at least by other Canadians! I’ve also heard the Island is a bit more laid-back on COVID right now, since they haven’t had as many cases…but of course, they’d like to keep it that way, too.

Oh this is a bummer to hear. A friend’s child just started school in Montreal and I had this worry that allowing students in, even with strict quarantines, might cause a problem. Glad that you get to go to warmer climes soon, but hope that CA is no longer on fire. These times.

I was sorry to hear about the re-closure. I keep wondering when that’s coming out here in BC. My dual citizenship isn’t all that helpful right now, as we’d just go for a long weekend to see relatives and then would have to deal with the quarantine on return, so it doesn’t make sense.

Heading to (hopefully) sunny CA sounds wonderful!

What a great pick Robin. I am hoping to catch a sniff of some samples at Arielle’s shop very soon. It’s great to see reactions ‘live’.
My SoTD is a sample of Xerjoff’s 1861 Renaissance. The dry down is even better than the opening. it’s a lovely soft powder, I am off to Fragrantica to help me remember it’s contents. The opening is a truly beautifully behaved lemons citrus, not tart not sweet, perhaps a meyer lemon feel. I know nothing about this brand and it’s too expensive but I had to know alittle bit more. Tomorrow is the famed Naxos. Please I must hide from Donatella. My decants are filling up all my cigar boxes. Now I need to alphabetize them somehow.
Maybe I am in a ‘perfumedemic’?

Trying two from Gallagher today…Behold Patchouli and Bergamust.

I will start w/ Bergamust as it’s mostly Bergamust Not for me. It has “sea notes” according to Fragrantica which equals strong fabric softener/dryer sheets to my nose…maybe it will settle down…dare to dream…

Behold Patchouli is spicy patch, amber, chocolate and orange so far. Kind of a dusty smell to it. I shall see how it progresses but it’s no Wicked Good so far which was pretty much instant nirvana for me.

Behold Patchouli has warmed and sweetened up nicely on my skin now and I am quite enjoying it.

Bergamust Not is still sharp and though I blamed it on the sea notes above it probably is just too much orange blossom for my tender nose. 😉

Survived the move and have liberated about half of my perfumes from moving boxes. Wearing Prada Infusion d’Oeliet while waiting for the internet people to get here.

I feel like I will be unpacking boxes for weeks!

SOTD is Jasmin Antique by Manual Cross. I am smelling a dense, realistic jasmine, that lasts and keeps a little scent bubble 5 hours and walk from the first few sprays. Some spicy and sweet notes pop in. I like it a lot but it may not turn into a love.

Sometimes having a scent you like a lot instead of loving means it gets worn more often…

We had snow all day yesterday and it is still biting outside, not great for the spring lambs. Happy birthday to Mrs Gaskell. I have her Bronte biography and Cranford. I am wearing Songes for a hint of colour. Keep warm!

I love her Bronte biography. Also the longer novels, if you are ever in the mood for such, are really good, especially North and South. Underrated!

I read her book, and loved it, so I guess I’m fangirling your post. It took me forever to finish because I doled it out to myself a couple of pages a day. Didn’t want it to end.

You smell lovely in vintage Coco! ?

Wearing Les Nereides Imperial Opoponax (now just Opoponax for the modern version) I understand only this older version smells like Shalimar, it’s nicely smoky in the drydown but overall less balanced than Shalimar.

I’m wearing Cologne pour le Soir this morning. On my walks I’ve seen so many squirrels carrying nuts and seeds, winter must be coming. The birds are flying south, too, big flocks of ducks, geese, and swans. My hummingbird feeder level is also going down fast. Now if I could only get the rats in the woodpile to leave!

Hermes Eau de Merveilles today. Working at my home office next to the open patio door. Getting lots of road noise (we overlook the highway) but if I don’t look at it directly I can pretend it is lovely waves lapping at a beach.

I’m wearing Clean ~Reserve~ Skin [Reserve Blend]. I’m not a fan of so many modifiers and subheadings, but I want to distinguish it from the regular Clean Skin, which appears to be floral and musk. I don’t think I would like that as much, as I’m enjoying the salty sweetness of the ~reserve blend~. When I think of skin + salt I usually think of sweat and I’m not getting any sweat. Would make a nice body lotion.

No tea today, just a delicious pumpkin smoothie which I think works for the weather today- warm and humid, but cloudy and grey very fall. I never know how to dress in order to be both cozy and cool.

Really squishy today. It’s been raining most of the day for me. I managed to grab the mail and take out some recyclables during a break in the weather. Predictions of 1 to 2 inches of rain before it all quits sometime tomorrow morning. ☔?

Better on the phone front for me today! Last night while talking with my brother, I noticed that I had bars for a signal for the first time in a few days. So maybe whatever was acting up got fixed?

SOTD = back in AG Ninfeo Mio. It works so well in warm and humid weather, which I have in spades today.

I thunked a sample of Erik Kormann September today. I’m trying to clean out some of my old samples — finding many that have dried up from being neglected too long (sigh).

Beautiful day here, and supposed to be nice the rest of the week! Allegedly the smoke’s coming up from the south again, though…so I’m going to get outside as much as I can right now.
