Clicked the link to their site — so sad 🙁
Such a great store. Definitely a loss.
The oldest dept store in the US…it is very sad.
Truly a loss, I loved shopping at L & T.
I did too, and it was such a great store for dresses. Wondering where we’ll have left to shop (in person) when it’s all over.
I had a number of cashmere sweaters from there over the years.
Super sad for me; it was our go-to department store as I was growing up!
My favorites from my youth are already long gone 🙁
Lord & Taylor was my go-to place for dresses and cute PJ’s that actually fit me. ?
I bought a lot of work attire (and a few perfumes) at L&T over the years, and I’m sorry to see it go.
Having spent the last ~six months in either sweats or shorts and tees, I do wonder if “work attire” is now a thing of the past. I’ve lost some weight and need new pants that fit, but have hesitated to buy things that might not be right for whatever our post-COVID workplace may look like. The few times I’ve had to go into the office, I’ve noticed some people in regular business wear, and others in shockingly (pre-COVID) casual dress!
I will be super sad if Nordstrom’s closes, even though it’s a very different store than the one I grew up with. My mom had grown up in Seattle. I don’t think she was able to shop there often, but she always loved it. I remember how sad she was when I. Magnin closed its doors in San Francisco – she thought it was so elegant.
I certainly don’t think elegance or classiness is defined by department stores, but it does feel as though their loss indicates some of the decline in standards that I worry about. I’m sure I sound like the old lady that I am!) However, maybe something new and more positive (and less consumption-oriented/wasteful) will rise from the ashes!
(That should be Nordstrom, not Nordstrom’s.)
I still mourn I. Magnin. I have a purse that needs new lining in it that I bought years ago at their closing sale. I treasure it partly because it has an I. Magnin label in it. I also have a silk pillbox hat with their label that I bought for my wedding. It was such an elegant store. I remember when the Oakland store still had those pneumatic tubes for payment processing. No cash registers ruining the elegance.
