Monday scent of the day 6/1

Posted by Robin on 1 June 2020 198 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit and welcome to June! (Plus happy World Milk Day and Go Barefoot Day, and happy birthday to Morgan Freeman.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm starting off the week with cp points, in Memo Inlé.

Reminder: on 6/5, wear a perfume with osmanthus, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the blue poppies bunny was $28 at The Polish Pottery Shop but might be sold out; they still have lots of other bunny figurines and cookie jars.

Acca Kappa Tilia Cordata a perfect sunny breezy frangrance for a sunny breezy day!

No credit points here and I have no idea if any fragrance I own other than Osmanthe Yunnan actually has osmanthus. Will be a fun to find out more about it from everyone here ?

I was awake at 2:47 and remembered the rabbits.???
SotD is Chanel Paris-Venise. I ordered samples of three of the Les Eaux’s from eBay, Venise, Biarritz, and Deauville. So far this one is my favorite. When I looked up the notes, it’s not surprising, it has notes of vanilla and tonka. I tried all three yesterday because they are fairly short lived.

Deauville was my favorite of these and I think it had the most oomph/longevity too although I liked Venise as well.

I quite like Paris-Riviera as well.
Looking forward to trying Paris-Edimbourg once it’s released.
Juniper, cypress, cedarwood and vetiver make it sound rather masculine.

Was it part of the crazed fever dream box I have been in for what seems like ever?
I am so excited! This made my day! When does it come out?
I love all the eaux equally.

Did you get the smaller one?
When I was visiting Paris it was just in the time of the launch of Paris-Riviera and I was only travelling with hand luggage (so no more than 100 ml of perfume allowed).
I knew this collection comes in 125 ml but in Galleries Lafayette it turned out they also released 50 ml! I was like “I’m not going back home without one of these little cuties”

I got the 50ml bottle, but I see myself getting the big one in the future, since I wear it a lot. The same with the lotion.

Hey twin! Though I’m wearing the lotion. I also though it was short lived when I tried it at Nordies a while back, but finding it to have good longevity now (the perfume, but also the lotion).

Happy Monday all. :) My SOTD is Narciso Rodriguez Musc oil for Her. And It has osmanthus in the notes.
Proper amount of coffee ingested, sunscreen and walking shoes on, and headed out for a four-mile walk. My goal is to walk at least three miles every day this week. I need exercise to lift my mood, getting out in nature should help.
I treated myself to Straus Family creamery strawberry ice cream over the weekend, I think it’s my top strawberry ice cream.
I finished Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker and found it ‘meh’, I don’t know why. For all intensive purposes, I should have liked it but nope…
I’m about to start reading Orphan, Monster, Spy and the Fifth Season.

Realized this morning I hadn’t checked NST all weekend! Will peruse today if I can.

I ventured downtown Saturday to see if they had my husband’s favorite jam at the Farmers Market. I actually rode the bus…pulled out the N95 for the ride and replaced with the surgical mask once I got off. Market was already closed, so I walked the two miles back home. Stopped at a deli to buy a couple cans of sparkling white peach hard ice tea. Pretty tasty.

Wearing Sylvaine Delacourte Vahina today for CP.

Totally would celebrate go barefoot day if I didn’t have cats who manage to get tiny bits of litter on the floor. I simply cannot vacuum after every visit to the box. I was a barefoot kid growing up. Any excuse to take the shoes off.

I put a relatively large, really plush, shaggy bath mat in front of my cat’s litter box, for this very reason. It doesn’t keep every single bit contained, but it does tend to limit the tracking area.

As a kid, I was an idiot on the bare feet front. We belonged to a pool club for a few years. I would walk up the 1/2 mile or so in the am to the pool…barefoot. On the way home, I’d have to run from lawn to lawn because the asphalt was so hot. The days of poking melting tar in street cracks with your big toe…a distinctive smell.

Barefoot is a way of life in Florida. I can’t even remember the last time I wore closed shoes there…I’ll be heading back at the worst time of year (July) and I’m already dying just thinking about it. ?

Yes, it’s a beautiful little nature retreat here. There’s a large house for rent next door, but the folks who planned to rent it for the month of June cancelled and I’m not sad about it. ?

I’m headed home in July in attempts to sell my house, which is why I started heading east in the first place before this whole covid mess blew up. I’m a bit concerned about that, but I have a neighbor who is in real estate and she told me the market is still booming down there, so we shall see.

I’m honestly not sure what will happen next. Many hospitals here are still not fully open and travel assignment listings have decreased dramatically. I can imagine this will go on for quite a while as hospitals continue to cut spending in an effort to recoup profits lost during the covid closure time. Many small rural hospitals may completely close because they were barely surviving before this. Smaller nurse travel agencies may go under as well. Admin in most facilities are still taking full pay with bonuses. The CEO of this company proudly announced he was taking a 5% cut through the end of June. Such a sacrifice! ?

The hospital I’m currently at cancelled all the travel nurses on day shift. I was waiting to be cancelled myself, but so far this hasn’t happened. They’ve replaced all the seasoned travelers (and there were many!) with new nursing school graduates beginning in July.
There is a lot of dissension at this facility because staff is considering unionizing, leading to friction and animosity between staff and admin. Just spoke this week with a day traveler whose assignment was cancelled, but he had applied for a staff position weeks ago to start after his contract was completed in June. He is pro-union and was told they have no place for him in the hospital on any unit or shift.

So who knows? Everything is up in the air. I’m just taking it day by day. More than you ever wanted to know! ?

Actually not. It’s interesting and sad. I hope you can work your way through this, as I have no doubt you will.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could just chuck nursing and become a park ranger for a couple of years?

It’s very sad. This hospital used to be non-profit but was bought out about a year ago by a huge for profit hospital system. They fired almost all the folks in management positions and about 25% of staff,
then replaced them with lower paid people. Also forced out many physicians who didn’t join their “group.” It’s all pretty ugly, and the bottom line is, as always, decreased q patient quality of care.

We actually got booted from in-pt early because they had all the travelers whose contracts they needed to honor and finish out. I’m sure some states who have little regard for the virus and cdc guidelines will be calling for travelers in the coming months.
But, here, overall hospital admissions are down in part because people were/are avoiding the hospital for non covid reasons and covid admissions are way down. Our census is frightfully low at the moment.

In-patient Covid cases here are increasing, as well as PUI’s. They’ve restarted elective surgeries, but they have hired a boatload of graduate RN’s to replace the travelers. Good luck to them!

I had a man yell at me in the grocery store yesterday because I accidentally went the wrong way. I stepped aside to let him pass when he started in on me. Him: “You’re going the WRONG way!”
Me: “And you’re not wearing a mask.” Ugh, so sick of everyone, I’m ready to run into the woods and live with the ?’s !

I don’t watch any news and right now it’s hard to stomach even reading the news.? Trying to stay hopeful but think I may need a good, emotional cry later today. ??

Reading book 5 of the Ruth Galloway series and will be hiding out in that alternate universe with those lovely characters for the foreseeable future if anyone needs me.?

yes, we are avoiding reading the news, or poor newspaper gets no love these days and we don’t have cable so there is that.

With you 100%. I make Mr. G wear headphones to watch tv – his coping strategy is to amass as many facts as he can and then analyze them, and mine is shutting out reality and disappearing into some alternate world. Right now it’s Pride and Prejudice’s Hertfordshire.

My small town had its biggest protest ever this morning, 500 people. Police knelt with the crowd for the whole 9 minutes at the start. Seeing all the people out, all peaceful, all wearing masks, made me feel very hopeful.

I know it must feel very different and more hopeless in other places.

Woke up much later than anticipated today. My family and I went walking around Zoar yesterday. Going into work today with a smidgen on no 5. Packed up my leaky bottle for the mailman to pick up tomorrow. There never seems to be enough time to do anything anymore.

I’m wearing Tuberose Gardenia this morning, with nothing on the day planner except mowing the lawn and taking a walk. I’ve had to cut back on baking because I was gaining weight; usually I give my baked goods away but can’t now.
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that my city is tentatively opening on June 12 but NYC is opening June 8. Oregon in total had fewer than 4200 cases. So odd.

I missed the poll on Saturday so am spending some time today reading everyone’s responses. Indiana has a 5 stage reopening plan with 5 being open everything: Stage 4 starts 6/16. The COVID cases in my county are continuing to double every 2 wks and was mentioned in the NYT has one of the 10 outbreak areas to watch. The health dept just put out an alert on FB but few people are still wearing masks etc as it is “strongly suggested,” what does that even mean? You can’t enforce a suggestion. This county, primarily my town, is the top trailer & RV producer in the world and the factories all quietly stayed open thru the quarantine without putting safety precautions in place bcs of the ol’ bottom line, it’s impossible to social distance on an assembly line. 32, 000 people live here but 55,000 work here, including many non English speaking residents who often have no access to area information.
Rant over, it’s just worrying and my heart breaks for everyone across the US. And world.
Wearing Allure edt because I wore it yesterday and it smelled so good, like a warm spring day. Watching Holderness Family videos, which I discovered recently, listening to old Motown and making Quiche Lorraine for dinner. Thanks for listening, NST ❤️

Ugh! Just like at the meat packers. It’s required here when indoors at a public place but I get super-annoyed when I see masks below nose and / or chin — what is the point. Also, people who cannot stop talking in their cell so they can get in and out quickly. And don’t get me started on the guy with his mask on, singing at the top of his lungs and whirling around with his outstretched arms.

That image is funny and infuriating! Meat packing plants have to be the worst – working in a giant refrigerator (viruses like a cool environment) with so much equipment running that you have to shout to be heard (more droplets) and no one is giving those workers PPE. Again, there’s no room to social distance on an assembly line.

I went with Amouage Journey Woman for my osmanthus perfume of the day. I like this blend of honey, osmanthus, and mimosa. I will probably finish my manufacturer’s spray sample today, and gosh the bottle of this is really attractive. However, it’s pretty low on the priority list at the moment. FragranceNet has a 100ml bottle for a great price, but I don’t need that big of a bottle. I wish Amouage would make 15ml or 30ml bottles. Yes, I’m dreaming there.

This weekend my boyfriend and I did a lot of cleaning, mostly yesterday. I love having a cleaner apartment. This also led me to take a shower late yesterday when I’m usually a morning showerer. So I slept in this morning, which was much needed due to lots of tossing and turning by both me and my boyfriend. It seems neither of us sleeps well on Sunday nights. Since I didn’t have a shower to wake me up this morning, I think I’ll be drinking more coffee than usual. Oh, speaking of coffee, I wore Civet on Saturday. It has a fantastic coffee note. I really, really love Civet and a couple sprays last all day.

I don’t have the right words to express how the events of late last week and this weekend have made me feel. So I won’t try. I do know I want to be a better ally. I feel a lot of cowardice in approaching certain topics with my family. I’m not even sure there’s a point, especially with cousins I’ve never been close with and never will be close with. I already challenged one cousin on a Facebook post last month and hated the whole thing. A quick note: I live really far away from my family except for an aunt and uncle that live in the same city as I do. I live really far away from my family purposefully. I definitely want to spend minimal time on FB this week. I never feel happier by going on FB. If it wasn’t for some perfume groups and occasionally getting to see pictures of my nephew, I would just leave it altogether.

Sorry, I wrote a story this morning!

Re: Osmanthus – I’ll watch in the sidelines for inspiration and will participate in Friday. I don’t think I have any osmanthus-forward perfumes, possibly because my factory impression is it makes perfumes smell like a wet basement … not moldy, just musty.

In other news, I finally got light filtering (as in blackout) curtains for the kitchen. It was in a darker fabric than I intended but I really wanted to get them this weekend so I settled for it – it’s a nice contrast to the light mocha walls. I’m glad I did because it worked to remove the bright light that washes out my face whenever I’m on a video call. And speaking of video calls, I hope to have time to share some more Zoom tips (mostly don’t s) tomorrow.

I use black out curtains between the van cab and living area. With the camper top windows open and the vent van on, the living area is a good 10-15 degrees cooler. Plus, at night, no one can see light spilling into the cab area.

I have “wool runners.”. The ” mizzles ” are wool runners that are waterproof and I haven’t tried them yet. I do get wet toes walking across wet grass in my wool runners but they dry quickly. I have had my shoes for a couple of years and they have worn well. They don’t have much tread on the soles so are no good on steep, rough tracks but are fine on gravel , pathways etc. i don’t wear socks with them.
The slip-on ( without laces ) are not as good for distance walking as they slip off the heel a bit.

SotD = Jo Malone Honey & Crocus

so pretty it practically breaks my heart, truly amazing. I have tears in my eyes.

thank you to the wonderful swap friend who shared Honey & Crocus with me!

and thank you to Robin for enabling and to everyone who joined the swapmeet. Many more folks were willing to swap decants than I expected, which was a sweet surprise.

stay safe, fragrance friends, you are important to me.

    ???!

It’s a gorgeous day here, weather wise. I spent a little time outdoors today enjoying the sun and mild temps. Need to do that more often, I think.

SOTD = Soivohle Fig Black Tea perfume oil, from the sample stash. This is a strange one… rather medicinal top note to it. Yet comforting too. I’m still figuring it out.

Working on my samples too – in Ferre, which I only wear at the office, but it’s working quite well at the dining room table…

I’m in Thomas Kosmala Frenesie, a Luckyscent sample that has osmanthus listed in the notes. It’s a light floral with some light oud, if there is such a thing.
I like this one. There’s some apricot suede stuff going on here, and if that’s osmanthus, I like the note! I’m going to make a concerted effort to dig up some samples for the cp this week, and be less of a fragrance flibbertigibbet. ?

SOTD was some Paris-Venise body lotion from a kind NSTer in the swap meet. I think I like more than the perfume (of which she also sent a decant)! It seems like the citrus notes are more prominent and longer-lasting than in the perfume.

I need to read about osmanthus notes to see what I have here for the project. I’m wearing Calligraphy today and enjoying it. My new resolution is to clean one thing in my house each day. By the time I’ve worked from top to bottom, including cat boxes and porches, it’s time to start again. But if I do nothing it all mounts up and gets too overwhelming to tackle.

I need to get back to that, Calypso. I was doing that, cleaning something, anything, at the start of the lockdown. My floors especially need some attention.
      You smell great in Calligraphy!

I really should do that! Instead my resolution seems to be to paint at least one thing every day….so house is slowly looking newly painted but rather messy :-)

In Rodin Bis which slides a little higher up in my “is this my #1?” column each time I wear it.

Man, it’s been a week… I’m American by origin, so I’ve been reading ALL the news and social media posts. I’m removed from it physically by being in Canada, so I feel like I need to not check out online just because I can. My sincerest feelings are with those of you living through it all.

My weekend/Monday: the temperature plunged from humidex 35-40 last week to 9°C.

I immediately cranked the oven back on, made bread and pizza, a lentil potato stew, baked a whole trout, and today made some more Hawaiian butter mochi.

I want to able to swing from the rafters in my house! But cooking will have to do for now ?

I’m really hoping Montreal will open up playgrounds soon, so I can use the outdoor fitness center near my apartment which has some pull-up bars.

My biggest hugs to everyone. Whether you think you need them or not. But for anyone who needs concrete actions and actual allyship, please know I am working as hard as I can. (You still get hugs of course.).

    Good evening!

Scents this morning were TDC Kashan Rose and Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange — the smell of making decants again. :)

This evening: trying a decant I swapped for, Roger & Gallet Fleur d’Osmanthus. I like it. (Thank you!) I was so sleepy when typing to ask about swapping that I couldn’t remember what I’d asked for. I was like, “Okay, if my brain is at least half-asleep, I need to step away from the keyboard, go to bed, and try again in the morning.” I remembered what I’d offered, which is the important part.

And I finally got to the post office today with swap packages to send on their way! It’s not like I’m super-busy in general, but if I’ve gone out grocery shopping, I come home exhausted. I knew it would take me a while to be able to work in a trip to the post office.

I went to Wegman’s afterward. It was a pretty successful trip in that I found the things I wanted and the things Mom and Dad wanted. I got to Wegman’s a little before noon, and there wasn’t a line to get into the store, but a number of other shoppers were pretty aggressive about darting in front of me to pick things off the shelves. I don’t go to Wegman’s that often, so it takes me a little while to figure out where the things I’m searching for are. I was exhausted when I got home, as usual.

After a nap, I planted more of my flowers and herbs. I got a lot more of that done today than I thought I’d be able to do.

I’ve been watching CNN in the evenings, and the news has been sad and disturbing. As I wrote late the other evening, I’ve got to be more outspoken about letting other white people know that I don’t think that their casually racist or xenophobic comments are okay. The main reason I quit the garden club I was in was that a number of the privileged white ladies who were members didn’t think to check their privilege. Some would start sentences like, “I don’t want to sound like a racist, but…” I didn’t want to hear the rest of any sentence that started like that. I’m happier doing my own thing and having friends who have a variety of life experiences and realize that there’s more than only one legitimate point of view about life, society, etc.

Oh, I’m fortunate compared to many, I think. I quit the garden club in early 2016, so it’s been a while for that. I heard one of the ladies at the Christmas party saying something about immigrants in a nasty tone of voice, and others saying how you couldn’t just say “Merry Christmas” universally anymore because Jews had ruined that as a holiday greeting. I was done.

Hugs to all who need them. It has been a painful time on a lot of levels lately, yes. Take care, folks!

I’ve been wearing a lot of the first Diptyque Essences Insensees, the mimosa one in the peacock feather bottle. Doesn’t last long but I’m at home so I can easily refresh. ?

I have at least three osmanthus fragrances, and I love osmanthus, so this will be a good week.

It’s so good, Lucas, and very fresh, in a good way — perhaps not too feminine for a guy if it weren’t for the girlie atomizer bottle. It’s too bad it was a limited edition.

We can’t ship perfume internationally but if you can ever find someone in Europe to swap a sample with, this one is worth it.
