Tuesday scent of the day 4/28

Posted by Robin on 28 April 2020 221 Comments

It's the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. What fragrance are you wearing?

The sun is out, so I'm celebrating with Diptyque Oyédo. Tea at the moment is Numi Chinese Breakfast with a bit of nutmeg.

Reminder: 5/1 is May Day! Don't forget to rabbit rabbit rabbit, and wear the fragrance that sent you down the rabbit hole. (I think someone suggested this project, raise your hand if it was you!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: "Inspired by the original hand-painted wallpaper in the Drawing Room of our Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, the Camellia Teapot makes an elegant addition to your Afternoon Tea experience, or gift for a tea lover. Made exclusively for Fortnum's in Stoke-on-Trent, this two-cup teapot features gold gilding and an intertwining tea bush design with a little bluebird fluttering here and there." £140 at Fortnum & Mason.

I noticed that sweater in your picture and liked the colors. Etro is one of my favorite brands! Not that I have much. A few sweaters and some scarves.

I’ve sometimes found things on a good sale at Saks, and also the website Voox (or is it Xoox?) which has designer things for lower prices, though still not cheap. They usually have only a very limited number of sizes, but have more small than large, so you might get luckier than me at it! I will have to take a picture of a couple things for you. My best friend here surprised me with a lovely short-sleeved Etro sweater for a retirement gift!

I have one Etro sweater (the real deal) I got a consignment 60% off.

I have an Etro dress I got via Th e Real Real. I am sure the discount wasn’t as good as at a thrift store, but living where I do, the thrifts run more to American classics (Talbots, not Ralph Lauren) than to exuberant Italian. I was planning to wear the dress to events this spring, all of which have been cancelled. And so it hangs in my closet.

    Buon Giorno Ltsg!
What a beautiful teapot Robin. I just saw my bluebird at our feeder.
I am testing some Jovoy samples from Fumerie today – Gardez Moi in particular. It just opened and is sweet enough for a hummingbird but I don’t think that will last. This is supposed to be a big fragrance and I am curious to see what happens.
    Happy Tuesday all.

Happy Tuesday 🙂 we had a bluebird flitting from tree to tree right outside the windows yesterday, he kept me enthralled for almost an hour. They’re so pretty! And I agree, that teapot is beautiful.

I love that teapot too. I always like designs with birds in them. At my mother’s house up north she had a birdbath in the front yard and the bluebirds would show up like clockwork each day at five o’clock and splash and play! So delightful!

Pre rabbit hole fragrance 2 of 4: Calvin Klein Contradiction for men.
In my mid twenties I became a bit of a CK fanboy. The usual suspects; Obsession, Eternity, Escape and then this came out. I loved it so much it became my signature scent for quite a few years until, at about the sixth or seventh bottle, I became thoroughly sick of it. But time passes, and about two weeks ago I reacquired it. It’s odd because, I didn’t really have any scent memory of it. Turns out its love all over again. Along with the other I decided to revisit at the same time…

I had a thing for Dark Obsession for a little bit, mainly cause a guy I had a crush on wore it lol. And he loved Armani Mania on me.. and we never ended up dating for whatever reason. Lol. CK is a line I have passed up a lot but interested in revisiting. I do really like Euphoria for women.

The marbled banana bread turned out great – it’s delicious and the marbling effect is really attractive – highly recommended. (I’m trying not to eat another slice so that I can have some with coffee tomorrow morning.)

I think I accidentally added more flour than called for (1/2 cup instead of 1/4 cup in the last step before putting it in the pan) and it’s still great.

Very early in the morning I sampled for the third time Jovoy Remember Me, Penhaligon’s Vaara and Olivier Durbano Lapis Lazuli. I didn’t find any of them interesting enough to finish the samples. To the good bye pile they went. I love however the deep blue color of Lapis Lazuli juice.

Now I am in a huge dose of Apres L’ondee to celebrate the bright and sunny day outside. I will take a walk at lunchtime and enjoy the beautiful day.

Today I’m dressed in a sample of Indult Tihota, which, it must be said, is nothing but bakery vanilla. Very nice, nothing wrong with smelling like a patisserie, but much too simple, and wildly overpriced for what it is.

This is awful but Guerlain SDV didn’t speak to me at all.

I’ve always been satisfied with Comptoir Sud Pacifique’s many iterations of vanilla, to be honest: I have nine of them (and mildly regret not having bought a few more back in the day). When I want a really lush, rich, high-end vanilla, I turn to L’Artisan Parfumeur Vanilia.

Cream is gone and bottle has a tiny bit left. It’s French Lime Blossom. Love the linden in this one and I know several folks here are fans.

Wood Sage and Sea Salt again. Down to the last few drops. If I had applied CM8 style, it would be gone.?
Tuesday is my grocery shopping day. Last week I went in the afternoon instead of first thing in the morning and that did seem slightly less annoying. Of course there’s one in every crowd and when some guy came into the aisle RIGHT PAST the sign that says Wrong Way (the aisles are one direction now) I pointed that fact out to him. His response was “pardon me.” Pardon you?! Look, we’re all playing by the rules here buddy, you’re not exempt. Humph?

    Good morning Y’all!

I haven’t been on here much…..between pharmacy life and digital homeschooling at night, I’m busier than a one-legged man at a butt kickin’ contest. (Sometimes the Southern colloquialisms are the best ways to describe situations!) 🙂

Anyhoo, smelling all soft and cozy-like in Guess by Marciano. I featured this gem on my Instagram series last night, if y’all are interested. Here is the link! https://www.instagram.com/p/B_giqIoDbuQ/

The third sunny day in a row! Wearing Le Temps d’Une Fete thanks to SheriG at last year’s swapmeet. I smell great 🙂
Yesterday I wore Zoologist Bee from my sample and omgoodness, I can’t wait to get a travel spray. Those few spritzes lasted all day and I loved every stage.
We don’t have Trader Joe’s out here in the rurals but we do have some Amish owned dented can stores that are a fun treasure hunt. I bought a roll of garlic & basil polenta for fifty cents and used it to make lasagna instead of noodles. Delicious, another quarantine treat!

I checked out other selling platforms and I think Poshmark is the easiest. It’s all done through US Priority Mail, buyer pays shipping and PM keeps 20%. Since its USPS, no perfume or nail polish allowed for sale. It took me about 5 minutes to get set up and I am NOT a tech person. Let me know if you want to try it and I’ll send you a link, I think we both get a bonus that way iirc.

World Day for Health and Safety at Work? Hmmm. A bit ironic for all the frontline workers. And the tragedies continue:

On a happier note, I’m in SB Gypsy today, which is an easy, undemanding, centering sort of scent.

Stay safe and smell well! ✌?

I’m sure there is some kind of EAP. Those programs are so overloaded by the time people can actually get in, it may be weeks. Most physicians are not employed by the hospital(s). They are subcontracted through a third party vendor, as far as I know.

Our shelter-in-place has been extended thru May. I don’t mind. Having some issues coping with a neighbor who has decided that this whole virus thing has gone on long enough… wave the magic wand and it’s over now. This morning she sent me an email inviting herself & her husband over my house for a glass of wine. Um, no.

Over the weekend I pulled out my spring perfumes, though it seems we have bolted straight to summer here. Shorts weather! Still, I declare it spring in perfume land. Yesterday my scent was Le Labo Aldehyde 44 which didn’t quite hit the spot. Today it’s Diptyque Eau Rose which is working just fine.

    https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/oct/27/the-man-in-the-red-coat-julian-barnes-review

I’m reading an interesting biography of a late C19 French surgeon named Pozzi ( depicted in a portrait by John Singer Sargent). Interesting from a perfume point of view because Pozzi was part of a circle of friends that included the man (Montesquoe ….that is definitely spelt wrong, I need the book in front of me ) who inspired the character in Against Nature. So , the man who actually had a gilded tortoise. It is a very detailed , bit fiddly, book (Julian Barnes) but if you are into history, society, name-checking ( Oscar Wilde, Proust, Huysmans, Sarah Bernhardt…).
Very yellow here… and I’m wearing Lale

Yesterday I got my latest Luckyscent order with several Zoologist samples including two I wanted to revisit and two newer ones, Sloth and Squid. I’ll comment more on Sloth later after trying it more. Squid is for me an instant love and quite unexpectedly so given its notes and description. I just read through all the Fragrantica reviews and it’s apparently a very divisive scent which people experience in very different ways. I dislike aquatic notes but get none here, nor any ink notes. I get a nice light floral, some incense, vanilla, and lots of benzoin. I don’t get any fishy smell, either. I do detect a slight metallic musky underneath note which might be ambergris. To me the entire combination is dreamily beautiful, plus I love that light blue color!

Let us know if you do. As I said, from the reviews it appears that some people have a pretty violent negative reaction, and wonder what the other people (like me) are smelling. It’s rather polarising, with few people saying only “meh” to it. It does have that (for want of a better term) “metallic” aspect that is stronger at times than others, and is rather alien–as is fitting for this intelligent and little understood huge monster of the deep!

I love this one but sadly it caused a skin rash so no bueno. I convinced myself I should buy a travel spray but decided against it because why subject myself to something I know I’m allergic to. There are (food) exceptions of course but I’ve learned to regulate intake. Here’s what I said about Squid:

The opening smelled like Pez candy and almond extract, then they gave way to warm spicy vanilla amber with a salty mineral vibe.

It’s a gorgeous sunny day here! Yay! ??? Both of the cats and I took advantage of the opportunity to catch a few rays today. ??

I also went grocery shopping today. 11am seems to be a good time for my local store… no line to get in, plenty of social distancing inside, and sneeze guards by the cashiers. I got almost everything on my list except for bleach. And the cashier mentioned the Tiramisu Oreos…

I did hear, but not see the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels on their flyby this afternoon. I suspect that limited visibility (read: buildings in the way) prevented me from getting a look.

SOTD = back in Prada Candy again today.

It was a lovely day! My husband saw the Blue Angels; I did not. Did spend a fair piece on a rocking chair in the sun, so that was nice, AND finally got wine via curbside delivery from a state store. All in all things could be worse.

Rain at last, all day today. Thank you Jalapeno and Lillyjo. This evening there is a misty fog which I love. I’m going to spring clean the kitchen, I’ll start in the evenings and I’ll finish this weekend.
I was wearing Moschino during the day and this evening YSL Cinema which smells like mimosa tea.

SotD = Berdoues Selva do Brazil

Smelling goooooood, the leftover florals in Apres L’Ondee from yesterday are melding with Selva do Brazil very nicely. I love an accidental layering event. The notes in Selva do Brazil are just petitgrain, tonka, and gaiac but it is so much better than that, some kind of perfume alchemy or something going on.

Hope everyone is enjoying Tuesday-bluesday. I’ve decided I’m allowed a bit of a pity party every Bluesday if I’m feeling so inclined, and I am. Join me if you’re feeling blue too. 😉 Virtual hugs to anyone who’d like one, social distancing props to everyone who is doing their thang quarantine-style.

Will you go back to the gym once things re-open here? I got notice my former Pilates studio is re-opening on Friday. I’m not ready yet. The restaurant across from me also looks like they’re gearing up to re-open. I’m worried.

SOTD = Lubin Kismet and Zoologist T-Rex

I used T-Rex to annihilate Kismet and the far drydown turned out to be a great layering combination!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B_inHcOhJy6/?igshid=yrsakgd2eqyh

I saw a video on twitter of someone making a no-sew mask from tube socks! Maybe 2 of them on top of each other may work, otherwise the material may be too porous. Anyone with good ideas for no-sew masks? I just received a bunch of masks from Etsy and I am letting the packages sit for a few days and then laundering the masks before trying them on.

Happy Tuesday evening! I started out in MdO Nuit Noire for a grocery trip this morning. I got there at about 8:30am, and I’ll never go that late again. As many have said, people aren’t really respecting the 6 foot spacing, including the store employees. One of the store shoppers was following me way too closely in the produce department, and when I confronted her, she just looked right through me. My concern meant nothing to her. Needless to say, I reported her to the manager, but I had a meltdown as I was talking to her, so I probably wasn’t taken seriously. I never thought I’d feel abject fear in a grocery store.
Well, I got everything home, sanitized and put away, and we’re good for two weeks at least. I’m now in an indeterminate number of sprays of Cadjmere. Of course, I had buttered cornbread and honey for lunch and am suppering on spaghetti and meat sauce with a nice glass of burgundy for dinner.
Thanks for letting me vent, y’all. Tomorrow will be a better day!

Sorry you had such a bad experience today. Unfortunately, every time I go to get groceries or to any pharmacy social distancing is nonexistence. It is so scary, but nobody cares at all. And who should I complain to when employees and managers do not respect social distancing either and some of them do not even wear masks. No wonder why we are the epicenter of the pandemic in the country. At the beginning I used to get so anxious and depressed, but I finally accepted that I have to learn how to live among irresponsible people. I cannot allow myself to break down anymore. I have to be strong, careful, take my own precautions and hope that God protects me. People are not willing to change their attitudes and they do not care about my fears no matter how many times I voice my disgust.

In ways I think this is because Houston evaded the numbers that had been predicted, so people just aren’t taking it as seriously. Grrr. My neighbor wrote me yesterday saying that this is “no worse than the flu” and “none of these extremenmeasures were necessary.” Meanwhile he is a near-80-year-old-man with heart disease! I have not answered. His wife is a dear friend but they are miffed because they invited me over for dinner and I declined.

On a happier note, I saw a man in the grocery aisle yesterday who stayed at a distance and wore a mask, and he was asking me what does vanilla extract look like? He was staring at all the spices and I was looking for yeast (none). I was able to point to the right items and he was so happy and grateful. He said he’s trying to make Grench toast for the first time. Bless his heart.

Late post again. Sonoma Scent Studios samples came today so tried Champagne de Bois and Tabac Aurea today. I like them both.

We’ve been having a nightly neighborhood cocktail party in our cul de sac for weeks now. We don’t go every night, maybe 2-4 times per week. Went tonight and the conversation was lovely.

Guess we have another 5 weeks of cocktail parties now…

I’ve been doing way more shopping trips than I planned on these last few days, which I’m sort of upset about. Every day, Friday through today, I had to run out to get something for the household. We definitely need to plan these things better.

At least I got a couple of hours of yard work in during the early afternoon. I managed to get a lot of bulbs planted.

In the evening, I tried Serge Lutens Fleurs de Citronnier from a sample. I like it.
