Thursday scent of the day 4/16

Posted by Robin on 16 April 2020 491 Comments

Aha, it's Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. Also, World Voice Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Hermès Vanille Galante.

Reminder: on 4/17, we're doing edition 5 of the Picture Challenge. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Three Dancers, Mills College, 1930, by photographer Imogen Cunningham. More reading here, or listen to a brief interview on Cunningham here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

And it sorta ties in to the CP because I used to wear loads of Chanel in my ballet classes in the70s and 80s. I was once berated by an older dancer in her mid 20s because I was wearing no 5 when I was 15. She said the scent was ” too mature” for me. I think not! I told her that I had been wearing it since I was three!! I used to spray myself with my mom’s perfumes that she left in the bathroom LOL ?

My husband would KILL me, he isn’t the fondest of perfume and I know he doesn’t complain about it only because it’s something that brings me joy. But in my dreams I can carpet bomb myself with 20-30 sprays just once to see how it feels (GLORIOUS who are we kidding)… Maybe someday when I can travel for work again!

Robin has inspired me to continue wearing Hermes fragrances. Today I am in Hermes Paprika Brasil. My favorite from the Hermessence line along with Brin de Reglise.

I am waiting now outside of the vets office for my doggy to come out. No people are allowed inside. I am very thankful that they are open and taking care of our little companions. He hasn’t been doing well for the last couple of days. Hope his health condition is not getting worse.

Beautiful, bright, sunny day. Perfect to spend the whole day outside, under different circumstances. Instead, I am going back home to continue working and have my delayed cup of coffee and some caramel/coconut Oreos.

    Happy and healthy Thursday, everyone!

I envy you for the glorious weather. I am dealing with snow now ??
Also, jealous of your Oreos. I need to move back to the city to get all of the exotic Peeps and Oreo flavors because they sure don’t sell them in my neck of the woods ?.

Kisses to Yei and hope all goes well with the vet visit.

The mystery one makes me think of those Bertie Bott (?) jelly beans in Harry Potter that are all mystery-flavored. I still laugh when Dumbledore tries one for the first time in years and sighs, “alas, earwax.”

I’ve tried the Carrot Cake flavored Oreos. The cookies themselves were pretty good, and a respectable version of a carrot cake, but the cream cheese filling in between them is WAY too sweet for me. My favorite Oreos right now are still the Dark Chocolate ones.

Sounds like the product of a malfunctioning production line… “What happened?… “Dunno, but there’s 800,000 of them. The art department’s pulling an allnighter on a new package design. We’re calling them ‘Mystery’… a limited edition, unless they catch on… ?

I agree with you to stick with the regular Oreos flavor. So far, none of the others I have tried have won my heart yet. And I particularly like the thin ones instead of the regular.

    Orangers en Fleurs Houbigant
Tea Matcha latte (with soy milk)

Wearing a bright yellow sweater with blue pants that have a bit of a flare at the bottom.

*This next part may not be for everyone so please skip if you are not in the mood for bad news *

Early this morning my kids where telling us that there were lots of boats and fire engines on the river? Usually they make up stories. We looked and saw that there were police boats and lots of first responders. My neighbor texted me that they were pulling a corpse out of the east river. On that note I hid their binoculars. I lite an incense for whomever that was. Not the way I like to start my morning…

I happen to love yellow clothes. My hubby always laughs when I bring home ‘another yellow shirt’.

How do you like the Chanel foundation? May I ask which foundation it is?

And because I like them, and therefore have so many of them, and because they make those nice rectangular 15 ml bottles that fit so nicely in a shallow drawer — they are also the easiest to access of all my collection. So spending a couple weeks wearing nothing else is also a very low stress way to start the morning 🙂

It’s funny, I like my Serge narrow bottles for a similar reason. I have one sort of Chinese cabinet with a big central space in it and I can fit my whole collection (which is considerable) in there by just lining them up side by side. I also have Agonist bottles there, which are again rectangular, tall, and narrow.

The worst ones for storage are the really unusually shaped things, like a few of the Angel variants, some of the ones meant to lie down, some with sharp edges (Ange ou Demon), etc. What a pain!

Yes, Angel bottles are a PITA to store. As are overly tall bottles like Kenzo Flower (I store mine standing up in a drawer, so height matters 😉 )

Robin, I have an acrylic lipstick display case that I generally use for decants. The square holes are the PERFECT size and shape for those 15mL Hermes bottles, so all of mine are now proudly displayed there. And, uh, good heavens I’ve got a lot of those.

I have, as usual, a ton of things to do before I head to mom’s house and I’ve frittered away my morning on the internet. I do this pretty much every day. After I get my lazy self out of the shower I will be wearing Stash lotion topped with Stash and possibly Stash hair mist. It’s beautiful here but cold and we’re supposed to get several inches of snow again tonight ?

I’m wearing Boyfriend today. I never tries the original so I don’t know if the reissue is true to it, but I really like it.

I wanted something comforting to wear to Trader Joe’s. I was prepared for a long wait, but it was empty except for three other shoppers and all of the fabulous staff. I am so grateful! And now I finally have some cookies in the house (my husband did the last shopping run and didn’t bring home any sweets).

that’s good news, I love TJ’s but do worry about proximity to other people. TJ’s stores are always much smaller than the typical grocery store, which I love in normal times, so much easier to get the shopping done quickly. 😀

Do you dress up for the Zoom meetings? We’re not supposed to wear what we wouldn’t wear to the office although I am sure the suit or shirt and tie wearing is optional. No one need ever know about the bottoms though unless you accidentally drop you laptop and the camera zooms in on the wrong body part. ??

Good news! The stimulus went into my money market account yesterday, I didn’t see it because I didn’t even think to look there. The government was so smart to send it there because I will be less likely to touch it. (I’m sure you were all wondering, lol)

      P.S I LOVE THAT MUSK!!!soo good!You smell awesome.

Solstice Scents Chiffon today…notes are Vanilla, White Amber, White Musk & Lemon Myrtle EO.

Was googling the Three Dancers photo and there is this comment on the photo from a reddit thread which is quite interesting…

“That’s a concrete stage they’re jumping on. Those old school modern ladies were hardcore! There are some great videos of Bonnie Bird demonstrating Graham technique on that Greek Theater stage at Mills. All the knee work on the concrete is pretty intense. This photo is from a pretty special occasion – The Bennington Dance Summer Festival was usually out on the East Coast, but in 1939 they brought it to Mills College, which is where Cunningham met Graham.”

Dancing on concrete is probably the very worst thing you can do! I was required to take modern dance classes when I attended the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan. My teacher studied with Martha Graham and was also a member of her company before retiring and seguing into teaching. She really turned me on to modern dance as an art form . A part of me wishes that I had pursued that instead of professional ballet.

I’d kind of forgotten about that site, as I subscribe to NYT Cooking and haven’t really looked elsewhere for inspiration or recipes since using NYT as my primary source. Lots of good stuff although I’m perplexed as to why she doesn’t seem to put nuts in baked goods, which from my perspective is essential (and I usually double whatever the recipe calls for.)

BTW, SK’s chicken salad is wonderful and has toasted walnuts. The whole fam likes it so we’ve been eating a lot of it. I confess to generally using a rotisserie chicken to keep life easier:

What an apropos day for Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day 🙂 I’m wearing leggings, though. Today’s tulip is lovely, but I particularly liked yesterday’s silly, froofy tulip.

Can you believe it’s Thursday again? On this bewildering Thursday, I am wearing Mitzah for some peace and clarity. This morning I did day 29 of the Yoga with Adriene 30-day yoga journey. I’m pretty proud of myself for sticking with it.

I’m not sure if this is the right time to announce a split, but I did get a bottle of Hiram Green Hyde a few days ago. Part of it is already promised in a split, but I do have another 10mL split available. The bottle was $171 for a 50mL bottle, so with shipping + the price of a nice atomizer, a 10mL split would be $39. Obviously, with the Coronavirus crisis ongoing, it would take me a little longer than usual to get the decant to you. But do let me know if you are interested. Hyde is pretty spectacular and rich and smoky: not ideal for the coming summer, but it is definitely fantastic for sheltering in place.

Last night’s bedtime scent, still going: Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee. That was the first time I’d sprayed rather than dabbed it, and I could smell a lot more of the incense part of it. That was all right, though. The fragrance still fell on the soothing side for me.

It’s gotten *cold* again in Pennsylvania. I went around picking flowers the other day (yesterday? the day before? Blursday?) when I heard there was a danger of a freeze overnight. I’m enjoying the lilac especially. It had just a couple of flowers open when I brought the spray in, and a few more flowers have opened.

Among other things, I brought in a tulip that has petals that are peach-colored on the outside and orange on the inside. I think it’s ‘Generaal de Wet.” I’ll have to look up who that was, or at least how to pronounce the name! The tulip has a nice fragrance. Tulips as a group aren’t usually fragrant, but there are a few that are.

Yes, I think so. 🙂 Now that that particular flower I cut is fully blown, heading for overblown, it has bright orange petals with yellow coloring at the base of the petals. It’s still fragrant. 🙂 There are more coming up outside.

I think the majority of lilacs are well adapted to cold climates much farther North. Most are hardy to USDA climate zone 3, if I remember correctly. They may freeze to the ground in that climate zone, but they send out new shoots in the spring.

You could certainly look for a type that does well in warmer weather. 🙂

        Have a good night!

I’ve hit the stay-at-home phase known as so-stir-crazy-that-i’m-online-shopping.

Our state just announced last night that school will not resume until fall for the kids. This has a whole string of impacts, since we are a two-state family. When school temporarily closed, we shifted to staying in the state where I primarily work. Since school is not coming back we will likely not be returning to our home until August. We came to Florida for what was supposed to be a week and will be staying for nearly 6 months straight. I’m overwhelmed. I bought art supplies and activity kits for the kids this morning.

I’ve been wearing Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint layered with Orange Blossom all week, which is a GREAT combo y’all (fresh, clean, but somewhat odd with a biting green edge). Sadly, I am down to the last drops of WJ&M and don’t want to pay the regular price of $200 for a JM archive collection frag. NOTHING is on ebay these days; a month ago there were lots of partial bottles for sale, and now we really shouldn’t be going to the post office or shipping things that aren’t essential. Luckily, I brought a handful of full bottles and samples on the “one week” trip to Florida which will now last 6 months. I’m wearing Ormonde Jayne Woman which also has a lovely green edge, an oddness, and some florals. It’s very nice.

Hope you are all fairing well and not going stir crazy.

Wow, that’s a huge change for your family. I hope you can find a quiet moment to process everything.

I love white jasmine and mint. The nice SA at Nordstrom even warned me it was being discontinued and I blithely ignored her and didn’t buy it. Sigh. I really wish they’d release those archive scents in 30 ml bottles.

Ah! Thank you so much for saying that! I thought it was $140 too but kept seeing $199 on the website. Turns out that it’s sending me to the AU site.

So now I have to think about doing it… even if I wait and get a partial bottle on ebay, it will be at least $50…

I’d noticed that about ebay, too, but today when I was looking for some stuff there seem to be more people putting items up for sale. Maybe your JM will show up at some point? I use the “saved search” feature and almost everything I’ve waited patiently for has shown up at some point at a reasonable price. Not everything, though.

Will also add that I use paypal post and thus can skip a trip to the P.O. But you have to be able to leave parcels out for USPS (and IIRC there are weight/size limitations? but maybe not) which isn’t an option for everyone.

I just dragged my 14 year old out for a walk this morning and I’m trying to convince my 12 year old to come out for a bike ride. I am wearing Guerlain L’Heure de Nuit, and getting ready to visit my parents today — sitting outside in their backyard, with a good distance between us. The last time I visited, I sat on the backyard glider, and my Mom came and sat next to me. I got up and moved away to give some safe distance. It broke my heart. Sad times. But, they are staying safe at least.

Today is my first day of furlough! It’s not 100% furlough, so I’m still WFH a couple of hours a day for 3 days/week. It feels really weird though. On the plus side, it means more time on NST!

Still unscented for the day, but that may change soon, as I plan to go out and do isolation exercise.

Hoping this arrangement works for you. I don’t understand the concept of not 100% furlough. To me, that just sounds like making you part-time but letting you keep benefits without having to satisfy a minimum number of work hours per week. Are you eligible for unemployment?

I received really bad news of a hiring freeze yesterday that dealt a crushing blow to my hopes of moving to another state with a climate that doesn’t make me feel physically and mentally awful for most of the year.

I know I’m lucky to still have any job at all when so many others don’t. But I still couldn’t help feeling sad. My kids kept on creating sweet little cards telling me not to cry.

I’m feeling better today and determined to find a way to manage my SAD better since it looks like this will be my locale for at least another half decade.

I’m ready to get out of here, too, but have very little control over where we end up next. I did buy a happy lamp to use this winter and it was surprisingly effective. I also spent a week in the Caribbean, which was as effective as it sounds. While the trip was a lot more expensive than the lamp, plane tickets are crazy cheap right now and they’re still offering free changes should things change (or not change, as the case may be.) RT from CLE to San Juan PR $236 for Feb 2021. Just sayin’.

Just a cheap one on amazon. Looks like yasmina’s the authority here, though. I got mine to help regulate my sleep pattern over the winter, but I did notice an energy boost in the mornings when using it. It is quite unpleasant to use, though (being a person who is very light-sensitive.)

I told my husband we need to start a new savings account called the Happiness Fund where we put all the money we are no longer spending on daycare, etc cuz of Covid. That we will have guilt-free cash to spend on sunny vacations to combat the winter blues.

I often wished I had picked a career that would allow me some autonomy to choose where to live. There are many things I like about my job but I would give it up for location mobility.

I’m sorry Coin-op that you are a fellow sufferer. It’s hard.

I saw an integrative medicine physician about SAD last year who put me on a supplement and vitamin regimen and light therapy. I felt 60 percent better and didn’t have any bad thoughts, which was a huge relief.

I am hoping to tweak this regimen so I can get to 80 percent better. I have to consult with the doctor about the vitamins/supplements but I already know have to get a much bigger lightbox and angle it differently to make even more progress. I’m going to check if my insurance will pay for it.

I highly highly recommend that fellow SAD sufferers try to find a doctor who can help through all these different modes.

      Oh that’s such a shame!!!

I don’t know what latitude you’re at or if you’ve gotten bloodwork done, but I finally started following the Canadian guidelines to take vitamin D in the winter (actually just year round for me, as I don’t get outside much to see sunlight).

I figured for years “I’ve been vitamin D deficient all my life, why start taking it now?” but it turns out that little dropper supplement has helped a LOT with some hormone regulation issues and evened out my mood quite a bit through the winter blahs.

The pandemic has nipped that in the bud by creating extra anxiety regardless, but at least my baseline is a bit better!

Yes vitamin D is great! I take it year round and up the dose in the winter. I also got my levels tested and surprisingly I wasn’t deficient. I then got my B levels tested and wasn’t deficient in that either (also of relevance to mood apparently).

Good for you doing all the things already to tackle this as best you can!

I admit that I still don’t love Canadian winter, but Mr. Teebear and I moved back East from the West Coast 5 years ago and I can tolerate sunny -30 days and snow a LOT better than 10+ days of grey in a row and endless rain and humidity like Vancouver got. That one was HARD for me, I would take any contract offer to get away during that season!

Not a SAD sufferer but wanted to encourage you to find a SAD doc and find ways to replenish your fas tank DAILY in the winter. Also, have you tried supplementing with Magnesium (magnesium taurate in particular)? A lot of mood issues have been tied to Mg deficiencies and some people really benefit.

Yesterday was really nice weather so I thinned the raspberry canes. Since the password project is done, I’m looking for the next thing to take up a few days. Paint the baseboards where the vacuum has chipped them? Organize the garage? YouTube how to cut my own hair? Oh, the hair. It’s normally short and layered to keep the natural wave in check. Now it’s shaggy, the ends are turning up in weird ways, and there is a Veronica Lake dip in the front.
I’m sampling Rogue Jasmin Antique today. Wow. I think I need a bottle. There goes more of my stimulus money!

My hair is long so cuts aren’t a problem, but I haven’t washed it since I broke my arm — seven weeks ago. Fortunately, I haven’t had to sweat from exercise or hot weather, so it doesn’t smell, but it’s getting oily.

Also, the lower two the series of waves that ladies in antique photos often have. I had assumed came from braids that had been let down or from some other technique. Now I suspect they simply weren’t washing their hair very often in those days.

joining the Hermes love train today. It feels good.

Last night I watched the movie Danny Collins. It was sweet and a fun trip “back” in memory to the years I lived in the northeast US. Al Pacino is a delight to watch. His eyes tell stories all by themselves.

So today I’m on a John Lennon kick, right now listening to Double Fantasy. Watching the Wheels is playing right now.

SOTD is Tom Ford Oud Wood, one of my earliest perfumista purchases and still a favorite. The universe must know I like it because I keep getting decants in swaps, lol. It must have a homing instinct.

The other day I got my 15 yr employee award from my company… $300. LAME! $20 a year??? Phoo. Donatella could find that under her couch cushions. I’m spending it all on perfume, even though it won’t go that far. I ordered Le Galion L’Ame Perdue from France… wonder how long it will take to arrive. And I’m currently eyeing EL Bronze Goddess Azur. Hmm.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my late query last night. I am not qualified to anyone with OCD but I think I will put myself in that category when it comes to laundry. So, for what it’s worth, for my clothes, I typically have a light load and a dark load (there are other categories for other things that need to be laundered along with the specific settings I use when washing, but I digress). I choose what color to wear on a given day / week depending on the load that needs more clothes to make a load. I don’t even care if the colors makes sense to wear together because… I am home and won’t seat off anyone’s eyeballs?

The question is, besides the type of clothes you wear, have you also found yourself deciding which color(s) to wear based on how you deal with your laundry?

It’s all about color arrangement basically,so my wardrobe does resemble a very colorful rainbow.Lol.
But it makes sense to me and I like the neat look(P.S,I have clothing hangers in every color as well, lovingly done by my late Grandmother with crochet and knitted covers).Obviously a yellow t-shirt gets a yellow hanger etc etc etc…I drive people who enter my life THAT closely,IN.SANE with it.Lol.

My winter clothes are almost all black, with lights being primarily shades of grey. There’s pretty much zero color so light & black covers it, as far as separating loads.

I realized recently that my winter pajamas are almost all black, too (also with the remainder being shades of grey.) But why a black pajama? I didn’t intentionally make the choice to have black pajamas (in the case of my actually clothing, it’s intentional) yet there they are.

I did go through a phase of wearing cute patterned munki munki pajamas, which were super fun (but ultimately too short) so I’m not sure how I ended up here.

Yes, sometimes I have made a decision on what I wear based on what all is lurking in the laundry basket. Other times, I couldn’t care less.

Towels ALWAYS get washed in extra hot water with Clorox, regardless of color. And sheets/other bedding get washed in my “allergen” cycle.

Hey 19 (à la Steely Dan). That’s the other thing Mr. G says when I wear Chanel 19. On choosing colors to wear, I’m far more likely to select something that complements (or at least doesn’t clash with) my nail polish color of the week. I was a nail-biter until middle school, and getting over that bad habit was hard enough that now I might be a little obsessive about my nails. I do them myself every weekend, and sometimes the color I choose for them restricts the available color palette for clothing.

Showered and lotioned up with my new L’Occitane Green Tea body lotion, followed by the body mist. May stay with the tea theme by adding a different tea scent this evening…either my Demeter one or my Fragonard one.

My husband outdid himself on ordering GS cookies. Good grief. I did go to CVS yesterday to check out the Peeps per PL67’s comments. They had the chocolate pudding but I decided I wasn’t interested. Did get some chocolate eggs, though. And picked up some surgical masks at our little pharmacy up the street…they sell them in packs of three.

My husband announced last night he was okay with leaving NYC. Turns out one of his old-time favorite restaurants, Lucky Strike, is closing for good. I think I first went there almost 30 years ago… it won’t be the last I’m afraid.

The thing about ordering any dress online that I would be concerned about is sizing. However, the bride-to-be has taken that into account, and is ordering a size (or two) up so that alterations can be made if necessary. I have no idea about returns, though.

Have you set a specific date yet, Koyel? If not, I would say don’t sweat it. Then again, it isn’t my wedding, so it’s easy for me to say that.

I’m wearing Amouage again today in Honour Woman, the first FB by them I bought (not that I have that many) (I wish!). It’s very springy and I do love that white bottle with the gold cap. Cats are all fine and a couple of them are out on the kitchen porch enjoying the nice weather and sunshine. But scaring off the doves from the bird feeder that hangs up there. My adventure soon will be to venture out to a fish market I have heard very good things about, in search of something to vary my diet since it’s hard to get grocery store pickup slots and that’s all I am doing these days. I have some frozen and canned goods and pasta but some salmon would be wonderful, or even redfish if they have it!

Thank you! It’s a small but super-clean shop and they limit it to 3 customers at a time. Their fish looked beautiful and they had gorgeous large scallops (but expensive!). They are Greek and also had a lot of neat Greek canned items. I bought two big beautiful Norwegian salmon fillets! Yum! One for me and one for my nice neighbors.

This morning I wore Chloe Love Story eau Sensuelle, my 8 dollar find from Marshalls earlier this year. Then, I colored my hair in the color soft violet black. It looks really nice, especially since the previous color was faded dark brown burgandy grey. I needed a good perfume match so I went with LouLou. I forgot how much I love this. I smell fantastic ?

Smokin’ deal on your Chloe ?

I saw your comment about Fragrancebuy Canada yesterday too late to answer. Yes, same place! I didn’t buy enough bottles for free shipping but it was sent by courier, not regular mail. I could track it very easily and will definitely order from them again!

I was in Silences this morning but after taking my eldest on a walk and the youngest on a bike ride I showered and tried to finish my Lord of Misrule body wash. I think I have about one more shower with it. I love the scent of Lush body products but I’m less of a fan of the colors and glitters.

Agree on the heavy coloring and particle additives. I’m using the Mi Casa… bar soap right now, and I love the smell and the color (this one’s a purplish blue), but it kind of freaks me out turning that color in the shower.

Some of the LUSH shower gels don’t work for me at all… the cream formulations feel like they leave something behind on my skin after I used them. And it’s not a nice something, either. ?

SOTD was Chanel Paris- Riviera which smelled nice and perky very early this morning, but I couldn’t smell it much today. I hate to waste wearing perfumes I love on days where I don’t get to pay attention to them. May just wear them weekends right now. I did get a compliment on my lavender eucalyptus hand sanitizer in the classroom today! ?
My coworker who went out from work in Monday not feeling well turned up Covid +. So far, she has no respiratory symptoms, but I am worried for her. She’s 63 and lives alone- fortunately has a god daughter close by to shop for her.

I’m having serious considerations about resigning and coming back to work there, but as a per diem through an agency since the nurses in my trainings the last few days who were from agencies are making 2-3 times what the staff nurses are getting hourly. And a lot of them have full times jobs elsewhere already so are just doing a few shifts a week as extra.
I’m on my hubs health insurance anyway…

That does sound tempting…I have a former colleague who left my hospital a few months ago and is now doing agency at a different hospital in town and is making twice what the regular staff are.
