Wednesday scent of the day 4/15

Posted by Robin on 15 April 2020 377 Comments

It's Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday and World Art Day, plus the Universal Day of Culture. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Brin de Réglisse, because perfumelover67 wore it yesterday.

Reminder: on 4/17, we're doing edition 5 of the Picture Challenge. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is Three Dancers, Mills College, 1930, by photographer Imogen Cunningham. More reading here, or listen to a brief interview on Cunningham here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I couldn’t tell what I was in the mood for this morning, so random sample: Etat Libre d’Orange She Was An Anomaly. I put half the sample on my arm — my skin is still shining with the oil — but I can hardly smell anything, so I wonder if I might be anosmic to the musk or something. Perhaps it will be back to the sample bag this afternoon…

Was it on NST that I read about lavender-scented tp?
Braved the store yesterday, and was relieved to score a pack of generic tp. Then I rounded the end of the aisle, and there was an ample display of the lavender tp! Think it was actually Charmin and not generic. Even people in a pandemic don’t want it.
Because someone mentioned it recently, am going to wear 24 Faubourg post shower…then attempt to motivate myself into Yoga with Adriene.

I found a 12 pack? 16 pack! Can’t remember because I NEVER buy more than four rolls at a time. But the huge number of rolls packed together took up the entire vanity space under the sink. I don’t think I can use that amount in 3 months…anyway, I found it at WalMart at about 2pm yesterday afternoon. They had several. But I did a very quick run because hardly anyone was wearing masks, and again, I had to put on my adult persona when some jokers didn’t mind the 6’ rule. ?

Right now, I would be super happy to get the lavender tp. For the past two weeks I have been trying to get tp and I have not been lucky enough to find any at any store, not even online. My brother in-law dropped at my door last night the worse one-ply tp package I have ever seen in my life. Pure garbage. That’s all he could get from Target yesterday. I deeply appreciate his effort. He and my sister are not happy about it either, but we have no other option. This too shall pass soon!

I will have to be on line outside of the stores by 6am, according to a couple of managers I have talked to already. People arrive super early and in a matter of minutes finish the supplies they put out for the day! ?It is almost impossible for me to make it at that time! I will try to survive! ?

TP woes! I hadn’t been able to find anything for weeks, even at the big grocery store, but finally went in one day at the nearby pharmacy right after the seniors’ hour and was able to buy two packages. It was quite a relief.

Sunny but cold and windy. My husband has become a hypochondriac, taking his temperature, blood pressure and blood oxygen levels multiple times a day. Clearly the current situation is getting to him, as previously I had to pester him to wash his hands when he came home after being out & about. I don’t think I’ll ever have to remind him again.

Me, I’m just bored and frustrated. Wearing Gallagher Wicked Good in attempt to improve my disposition with something vanilla.

His hygiene has always been lacking – my mom is a nurse so I’ve had plenty of proper training, which I’ve tried fruitlessly to pass on to him for 20 years. Now that he’s hearing it on the TV, all of a sudden he believes it. (insert frustrated eye roll)

I guess on the bright side with him being a smoker-in-quitting, if he starts again he can see always how garbage it is for him by following his vitals for a while!

My husband was heaps twitchy after quitting smoking (it was something to do with his nervous energy as much as it was anything else) but eventually it settled into something more normal.

Hopefully your husband will find something to occupy himself with in good due time once this pandemic has passed!

I agree, sometimes I will start an online order and just get overwhelmed or frustrated with how long it is taking and just go to the store instead. And I learned Instacart jacks their prices up on several items, more than they cost in the physical store. An example..a block of cheese at Kroger..5.99 on Insta but 4.99 in the store, visited the same day. Several more items were marked higher. And Instacart shoppers will often replace an item without telling you, sometimes replaced with a more expensive item. I have stopped using Instacart.

I had one excellent experience with a wonderful Instacart shopper who checked every substitution with me, and even typed in all the available ice cream flavors, etc — so I am guessing it depends on who you get shopping for you. But have had bad orders too, and the whole system is just frustrating.

My husband is high risk so we decided I should stop going to the store, but boy would I rather go in person.

I’m being a whiner really. In the grand scheme of things, I don’t have a single thing to complain about, but oh GOSH! I was feeling very sentimental because I lived here about 20 years ago and was wanting to “revisit” some of my favorite places. And I still have a couple friends here that I’m unable to see, although we do the occasional hours long phone call. ?

    Ganymede
A mix of mandarin, violet, immortelle and suede.

After spraying this, I went into my closet and put on my favorite suede skirt, Sandro, picked it up for a song at a thrift store long ago. I feeling very sexy today. I even applied makeup.

It grew on me. I liked it but wasn’t moved to buy it. People at work stopped me several times asking about my perfume, which is very unusual for my area. I think it just works on my skin.

    BaV
But am also adding lots of Nivea from the blue tin. A very early birthday present from PL67. I adore it because not only does work fantastic on my frequently washed hands but the smell takes me back to my three year old self….Nivea ,Vitabath Jean Nate and 4711 were scents of my childhood….and the tie in to the CP is that I began ballet lessons at the age of three.

It appears to be a parrot tulip or possibly a variety of fringed tulip…when they open all the way they no longer look like other tulips, sometimes they look like carnations and sometimes almost like peonies or roses. I think many people are only familiar with the “regular” tulip…there are all sorts of cool tulip species with different petal shapes.

Oh I absolutely love those red and white fringed ones. I used to go crazy buying fancy tulip bulbs in the fall to plant in my garden when I lived in Massachusetts. I would pore over the offerings at our big local plant store. Then in spring I had quite a showing.

Larry the cat and I are sitting on the front porch watching heavy snow blot out the green grass and weigh down the blooming trees ? we put a few storm windows up last week to enjoy the 70F air, currently it’s 29F. Spring in the Midwest! This is the same snow system that caused a 50 car pile up in Chicago earlier, I hope everyone is ok.

As far as books, being home with the kids I have less time to read (or anytime for myself) Mr L is giving me a break this afternoon, but I choose this time to check in on my neighbor who is alone. She is a retired biology teacher and she just moved to our building. I have be-friended her because she has taken a liking to my kids and she also loves clothes. I’ve been finding it much easier to read nonfiction than fiction. I think it is something to do with the way nonfiction presents and provides information compared to the work required by the reader to enter an imaginary world. Not sure though. Books of letters or diaries are really good as you can read them in smaller, bite sizes…and autobiographies are usually easy. Travel writing is great for escape. I have been reading a lot of archival material online which has been wonderful.

On a garden theme you coukd try Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature. Written in diary form about building his garden on the windswept shingle south coast of England. He was a film director who died from Aids.
Also, writers like Richard E Grant, Alan Cummings, Carrie Fisher for entertainment.

My husband stole a branch from a viburnum bush down the street (he said it came off in his hand! as if!) and it made my office smell fantastic for a few days. I need to get out there and find something else — from my own yard — to bring indoors.

Seems we are well ahead of usual when it comes to plants and blossoms blooming in Toronto. The forsythia is already out in some spots! I used to live in a different neighbourhood than where I am now. There was this bush in someone’s front garden with little yellow flowers that always attracted attention because of it’s scent. Nobody knew what it was but most agreed it smelled like chai tea! I finally managed to determine from online searches that it is golden currant and the blossoms have a clove/vanilla-like scent. I moved three years ago in February and thought come April “Oh no! I’m going to miss out on that lovely chai tea scent wafting up the street!” Once it warmed up I was so pleased to discover that just across the street the apartment on the corner had them lining the side of the building. The little flowers should be opening soon! Here’s a link…

Robin, one of my most treasured scent memories is literally following my nose in the dark (coming home very late from work) in order to find out what the wonderful scent was.

A branch of that bush also came off in my hand, and I finally managed to identify it as viburnum.

I guess not all varieties smell the same, but that one was incredible — like vintage Caron Bellodgia with indoles instead of sandalwood. I’m surprised there aren’t viburnum perfumes.

You smell wonderful, Robin! I was going to wear Brin de Reglise again today, but woke up craving for Osmanthe Yunnan. That’s what I am wearing today. Another Hermessence that I enjoy greatly.
Sunny, but windy and cold today. Drinking a cup of iced coffee and having some Pancakes & Syrup flavored Peeps. Wow! They are really good! I need to hide the package, otherwise I will eat them all at once! ?

Those flavored Peeps are really good! I got 4 packages yesterday from CVS (in my search for tp ?) since they are 50% off now. The Chocolate Pudding flavor is delish! I have not tasted yet the Root Beer Float and the Cotton Candy flavors. Saving them for tomorrow. If you have a chance give them a try. They are fun!

I have never seen these exotic flavors! Just as well for I would be buying them all! I actually made an Easter basket for the eldest and it’s in the basement waiting for her if she ever gets to visit… unfortunately I have already eaten half of the candy that was in there!

They are easy to find here in any supermarket or store, especially during the holidays. What is left after the holidays always get 50%-80% off. I did not buy more yesterday, because I also got chocolates. Enough sugar for a while! ?

A small spritz of SL Rahät Loukoum, which I love, though it can be kind of an attack dog in large doses. A big, sugary attack dog.

In small doses there’s a bit of smoke in the cooked-sugar accord which I had not noticed before. Caramelized almost to the point of burning. It’s kind of nice.

LAdDM. Another sunny and chilly day here.
My stimulus was not in my bank account this morning and I didn’t really think too much about it, but then it occurred to me why. I checked the irs website and sure enough, it was sent to the checking account I closed after my paypal got hacked. Ugh, now I’ll have to deal with that. The bank’s website is having delays and I can’t even log in and the hold time on the phone was 20 minutes.?Oy. Luckily I don’t “need” the money right now.
I told my girls we’d go through the Culver’s drive through for lunch today. We haven’t eaten out (obviously lol) or had take out since this began. The last time we ate out was March 10 B.C. and I’m getting sick of cooking. Really craving a cheeseburger and fast food fries.?

I’m in Jour d’Hermes this morning, and when I’m paying attention, the citrus and flowers brighten up an intermittently gloomy day. I’ve been playing with Bronze Goddess lately, which will probably be my afternoon choice.

Fragrance purchases/small anticipations: I ordered a couple of samples from Sage a couple days ago – Onyx and Peridot (separate, evidently you can also get them combined), so I’m looking forward to those. A few kind people here recommended some coconut/lime combos to me last week; I still have those to explore.

Tea: Upton Mist Valley Estate Second Flush

Reading: I just finished The Splendid and the Vile, and Wodehouse’s Joy in the Morning a few days ago. Not sure what’s next.

SOTD is Yohji Homme. Lavender + coffee. I’ve been craving lavender a lot lately for its calming influence, but this tall & skinny bottle always wants to fall over so that about gives me a heart attack… might cancel out the calming lavender, lol.

My blind buy of Jo Malone Lavender & Wisteria arrived yesterday, and I am itching to try, but the box must sit on the shelf in its quarantine for a few days. Grrr.

Yesterday I caught Kooky the cat deconstructing the puzzle that DH & I have been working on. He was sitting on the puzzle, hooking his claws under the edges and pulling it all apart! Monster.

Well my stimulus payment hit the bank last night and I promptly spent it on travel for November. Aeromexico was offering round trip Business Class tickets from San Francisco to Central America for less than $450 and that was too good to pass up. Thanksgiving in El Salvador!

I am sampling again, today is Marlou L’animal Sauvage. I was hoping for wild animal but got fuzzy kitten. This would be a good fragrance to wear to bed. It’s a warm musk with a tiny edge of sweetness.

Not foxbins, but Air Canada was allowed by the Canadian government to give credit vouchers instead of refunds. I lost $100 on Air Canada pet fees, United gave me a credit voucher. I didn’t try to get a refund because United waived the change fee and I am going to need to book another ticket in the fall anyway.

Question: is eBay seller beautyencounter reliable? Seeing something I want.

Mitsouko on my left, which just didn’t appeal today, so I spritzed Oeillet Bengale on my right side. Much better.

Can’t tell you much my husband raved over Baiser de Russie. He thinks I should do a split. ?

Making sandwiches was shockingly tiring yesterday. There were only five of us, and we made 510 sandwiches. A total win-win because I slept incredibly well after going to bed early. My husband had his Zoom class, so I watched Netflix’s Memories of the Alhambra on my iPad. Another Korean series, but this one has some VR fantasy/mystery stuff going on.

They may also be on Amazon.
I’ll often used ebay or Amazon to access these associated seller, for the convenience or for greater security with an unknown dealer, but beautyencounter is well-established.

Holt Renfrew complaint! I was trying to buy perfume for a friend’s birthday and couldn’t see the item on their site, so I phoned them. After pressing 2 for not having my call recorded, the robot not only did not connect me to an SA, but told me to GO TO THEIR STORE. You know, the closed one. I then wrote them an email and still haven’t heard back from them.

In conclusion, I bought a gift certificate at fragrancebuy, where my email question was answered in a couple of hours.

As is so often the case, I was looking for something else when I came across this fascinating post by Denyse Beaulieu on pivotal perfumer and L’Artisan Parfumeur founder Jean-Francois Laporte:

    http://graindemusc.blogspot.com/2011/11/niche-perfumery-loses-pioneer-jean.html

It’s containss a mini-history of the origins of niche perfumery, as well.

I realize nothing can last forever, but I really miss the years when Denyse was posting regularly on Grain de Musc.

I was in a Poundland store this afternoon and applied thoroughly what I thought was hand sanitizer at checkout, it turned out it was bath and shower gel for sale. I did get a tissue from one of the attendants but she gave me a funny look.

A perfect spring day 15 degrees and sunny. I’m wearing Jean Patou Ma Liberte, a favourite lavender perfume with a great sandalwood in the dry down.

I’m having an Amouage week with Love Mimosa from a sample this morning. It’s cheerful, floral, and sweet. But it lacks complexity or depth, to my nose at least. I’m going to make some oatmeal cookies this afternoon, inspired by Deva the other day. I offered to share with two friends. But one doesn’t like raisins and the other is allergic to nuts so now I’ve got to make three kinds of dough: one with raisins and pecans for me, one plain, one with chocolate chips. Sigh. Well I will still feel good when I can share—and eat some!
PS I have no idea what if any Amouage might go with that photo for this week’s CP. ??

Yesterday I wore PHI un rose de Khandahar. It was the last of my sample, and now I’m trying to justify buying a bottle, but I have to not buy anything for a while.
Not feeling working from home today. Pretty unenergetic so I’m just going to lay low after working. But, my washer/dryer will be replaced tomorrow! I’m really glad I live somewhere that has good maintenance.

Wore Terracotta today, because I decanted a split and got some on my hands, but it smells like summers a d holidays, so I am okay with this.
All of us in our practice had to do a virus test today and had to drive 30 minutes to the testing station. Thankfully I am not very prone to vomiting, they stuck the swap literally down to my larynx. Briefly had to think of Linda Lovelace Deep Throat… Ugh. Felt like a Francesca Bianchi today so I’m in Lost in Heaven. Feeling kind of blah today, maybe due to stressful dreams and my alarm going off while in the middle of deep sleep. Or could just be because I’m back in my living room trying to meet a deadline while not being able to work as fast as I can when I’m in the office. Hopefully I’ll perk up soon.

However, I did take a lovely walk after work yesterday and then chatted with one of my best friends for an hour and a half. I got a white bean and cabbage stew recipe from her that I’m excited to try soon (well, my boyfriend will be making it, but I’m excited to eat it). Here it is in case anyone is interested: https://www.forksoverknives.com/recipes/vegan-soups-stews/irish-white-bean-and-cabbage-stew/#gs.3f5isa

Sunny and chilly here today! Teflon kitty is taking full advantage of the sunbeams in the bay window, while Spooky kitty is hanging out on the kitty heating pad. I actually had to turn our heat back on last night. ???

SOTD = back to Byredo Bibliotheque EdP. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. My sample is about half gone now. This and a nice hot shower this morning have restored my perfume equilibrium. I’m still feeling a bit of “ugh” today, and I wonder if the weather roller coaster might have something to do with it. In any case, it means that I should be drinking plenty of tea! ☕

I am, however, still dressing for work, and still wearing three perfumes a day. My one misfortune so far was wearing Lubin’s Idole in the morning, followed by Miss Dior in the afternoon – there was still a lot of Idole on my jacket sleeves, and the combination was not nice.
I’m going to start today with La Rose by Le Galion.

lillyjo, how is the Elegance Animale? I have had really good luck with a few Lalique perfumes. My personal favorite is Perles de Lalique, which is a peppery rose. Eau de Lalique is a slightly spicy, airy citrus, very much in the vein of some of the Hermessences, and Encre Noire is a great vetiver.

This is only my second time wearing it. It’s very warming, I get something reminding me of cinnamon, and I find it only slightly animalic. I’m enjoying it. Sorry I’m not that great at description. I got this from the lovely pl67, so maybe she will chime in.

I’m late to the par-tay today but I’ve been wearing Lush Orange Blossom, which I think was discontinued, which makes no sense to me because doesn’t everyone want to smell like orange blossoms basically always??

SotD: doused myself in my orchid perfume from Singapore.

I wanted a nice spicy scent to distract me from grocery lines in 2°C weather, but it turns out there was hardly any wait!

So I’ve been sniffing on and off as I cooked this afternoon. I always want to be able to describe this scent to others better but it’s hard because it’s ALL different orchid oils! So difficult to pinpoint “notes”.

Made a pot of chili con carne for the rest of the week and have bread ready to rise overnight. Did not work out but was on my feet most of the afternoon.

In other news, although it is quite late and I may not get enough eyeballs, how many of you decide which color of clothes to balance out a light or dark load of wash? I certainly do and have actually been doing this even before the time of COVID.

I separate out loads by color a LOT! Typical loads for me are whites, darks (black, navy, brown), blues, greens, and reds. Sometimes it takes a while to get a load of a given color, but why rush it? It’s not like Mr. Jalapeno or I are going to run out of clothes anytime soon.

That’s so true about not running out of clothes. I tend to wear more colorful / darker clothing so I usually end up over time with a light load for every 2 or 3 of darker loads (over a period of 3 weeks).

Sigh, I have issues, so I’m sure I put way more energy into this kind of thing than necessary.
Darks = black, red, dark gray, and other dark colors but not blue jeans that shed dye. Red seems to be the color that bleeds the most, other than dark-dyed blue jeans. So if it bleeds and it’s with my black clothes it doesn’t matter.
Blue jeans go by themselves, esp. the heavily-dyed dark jeans that bleed. gain, if they bleed, doesn’t matter.
Lights: anything into mid-tones unless it’s red, and again, no jeans. I include white clothes that are gentle cycle or cold only.
Whites for me is anything that I use bleach on occasionally, ie socks, towels.
I am a single person now so this results in small loads sometimes – my OCD is not for everyone.
      I hope this helps!

LOL. I just do lights or darks (cold wash and rinse, moderate spin) or towels / bedsheet pillow case (Temperature Boost, normal spin) and blankets (Temperature Boost, moderate spin) and jackets (cold wash and rinse, moderate spin). I’ve never used bleach but do a finishing rinse of half vinegar half water to brighten the wash and also fluff up towels.

I do … unless that will leave me with a very small load, and then I throw caution to the wind and hope that using a cold-water cycle will keep the darker colors from transferring. In those situations I’m pretty careful about what kind of fabric the darker items are – no jeans, and no natural fibers, as those are the most likely to run.

I must have been lucky because I haven’t had clothes that run in the over 10 years. That said, I do separate our lights and darks.

Yikes. Not only can Innot spell, I just realized I edt out a word in my question! What I wanted to ask was does anyone choose which color clothes to wear based on the waiting to be washed pile? I will amplify more and I am as OCD as anyone else cares to admit ?

LOL! :D yes, I do that.

I wear mostly medium to light colored clothing plus several pairs of dark blue jeans. I have a few pairs of black leggings and black chinos, a couple black tshirts and sweaters.

It takes me a long time to wear enough black clothes to justify a load of laundry. If I’m desperate to get my favorite black turtleneck washed I will make a point to wear black tops or bottoms (usually not at the same time!) for a few days.

Or like was said above I sometimes combine reds with blacks or dark blue jeans with black, but rarely do so because it “hurts” my OCD to run mixed loads, sorry if that’s too much info. ;)

I have a few white pants and white tops that I wash with light colored towels, I would never have “enough” to wash a load with just whites since my socks and unmentionables are all colors. And I always run those as a separate load because I can’t stand to lose a sock, and I never do. How’s that for laundry OCD?

This all sounds so crazy-making but honestly I like doing laundry quite a lot, it’s a very satisfying “chore.”

I am too busy being OCD about other things that I can’t manage that one. I also have a wardrobe of about 6 colors (red, black, gray, teal, white, russet) that it sorts itself out pretty well. I don’t try very hard with my appearance.
