Thursday scent of the day 4/9

Posted by Robin on 9 April 2020 378 Comments

It's National Unicorn Day and National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day and National Winston Churchill Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

My house was a bit chilly this morning and we're expecting thunderstorms and wind, so I went with Hermès L'Ambre des Merveilles.

Reminder: 4/10 is Siblings Day. Wear two fragrances that might be siblings, or wear one and tell us about the other, or wear a fragrance that your sibling wears, or interpret this project in any way you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in Wood Sage and Sea Salt with Lime Basil Mandarin, my favorite layering combo.
We started watching PBS Masterpiece World on Fire and it is really good. Intense, but good. Much better than the last couple that we watched imho.
    Today is my Friday.?

It’s about an American journalist played by Helen Hunt living in Berlin at the start of WWII. It also follows an English and Polish family and how all of the characters lives are intertwined.

Today is my Friday too! Happy Friday. You smell fabulous.

I know you asked this question ages ago, but I didn’t read it until it was too late to reply that day. Skin scents!

      1) She Was an Anomaly from ELdO – a cousin to Fleur de Peau but minus the carroty aspect and a bit more ethereal. My husband vastly prefers the ELdO take on the same theme.

      2) Taunt by Dedcool – it’s a nice not very sweet but really comfortable vanilla/ bergamot/ other good stuff scent. I’ve been wearing it to bed lately. (One caveat – I have the oil, so I can’t speak to the projection of the spray.)

Be forewarned there are some scenes that are not necessarily what I would call “brutal” but maybe more… “abruptly violent” if that makes sense? The story line and acting makes it worth watching for me. You’ll have to report back on your thoughts!

Inspired by Kevin’s review yesterday I am wearing Heeley Eau Sacree. This is my second time wearing it and it has become a big favorite incense perfume. It is a churchy incense very similar to Avignon. So peaceful and comforting. Just beautiful! Sillage and longevity are excellent. I dabbed on some last night and I can still smell it. Post shower I will apply more. It made it to the top of my to buy list. Incense lovers should give it a try.

Cloudy, rainy day. Splitting my time between work and home tasks today. It will be a busy day.

    Take care everyone!

        I agree skalolazka.
I am such a fan of Avignon that it is always my ‘go-to’, but I was very curious yesterday about Heeley Eau Sacree as well.

Commando still but you have inspired me, I may wear my decant of Timbuktu on one arm and Dzongkha on the other.
It’s very windy here so, they can battle as I weed the garden.

Parfumerie Generale Praline de Santal, which smells pretty much exactly as it ought to: brown-sugar nut brittle and austere sandalwood. Much less sweet than you might expect, especially at the drydown. Excellent for a cold spring morning.

It’s more floral and feels more nuanced than Havana Vanille. This is what Denyse has to say about it:

        The sexy one:

À ce soir by Pont des Arts

Bertrand Duchaufour calls it a vanilla blossom, but to me, it brings together three scents that were summarily ejected from the L’Artisan / Penhaligon’s catalogue. Havana Vanille’s fresh tobacco leaf and rum chica-boom sensuousness, matched by the hay, honey and pollen-dusted daffodil of Ostara (though the green here is more sap than hyacinth), with a dash of Amaranthine’s lush ylang-ylang. It’s pretty much got my heart in a love-lock. Who knew I’d fall for vanilla?

SOTD is PdE Corsica Furiosa. Tea is coffee, breakfast is toast and chocolate chip cookies.

I’m currently in the front yard of the big house, which is on the same property as the cabin. It’s fenced in so T-Rex can wander willynilly without me having to keep a close eye on her. I visit every morning to see what’s new and in bloom. The rhododendrons buds are big but still tightly closed. Tulips, various blooming bushes, red buds, dogwood trees- all in bloom. Every day a new color is added to the palette. The birds are carrying on and are not heeding any kind of social distancing. Yesterday, T-Rex found some wildlife in the side yard:

    https://www.instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE4MDMwNDA5ODUyMjU2NzIy?igshid=14tgplpmo9ntn&story_media_id=2282921744117622329

NC has extended quarantine indefinitely, so I’m happy I have such a beautiful area to be isolated in.

    Cheers and stay well!!?

I don’t think snakes have much odor, and when they feel threatened, they usually freeze, then if the threat continues, will strike or flee. This is a Black Racer and they move like lightening! I have a feeling the dog actually stepped on it accidentally and then became interested in it. I think she may have injured it, which is possibly why it was moving so slow.

I recently bought a bottle on ebay at a suspiciously low price, about which I was rather skeptical. (I do almost all of my perfume shopping on ebay and have had very few bad experiences, but you never know.) Happy to report that my bottle is legit as well! ?

      Congrats on the Theorema.

Good morning everyone! I hightailed it out to the walking trail this morning and saw a couple of sweet puppy-related scenes. A gentleman in his 80’s was walking a Great Dane puppy and the pup was exuberant, but under control. He had those uncropped, floppy ears that flop over on themselves on top of his head. SO. CUTE.
Then, there were the two little girls playing with their golden retriever puppy, named Molly. More cuteness.

My morning and evening walks have been saving my sanity, y’all. Last night, a guy was playing guitar and singing. It was right at dusk, so he had a lantern beside him. He played Leavin’ on a Jet Plane, which was strangely sad and comforting at the same time. I wasn’t having a very good evening emotionally, but that music was just what I needed.

I hope you all get the sustenance you need today. ❤️

I’m doing side-by-side potential-siblings today, with FM Eau de Magnolia on the left wrist and Cristalle EDT on the right. I love them both, but it will be interesting to see which wrist rises to my nose most frequently today. Have had a headache for two days, and am currently taking my temperature, just in case – so far, haven’t even made it to 97, so I think I’ll restart the thermometer (must have done it wrong). Hang on … (Jeopardy music) … Cristalle winning as of now … AHH, yes, there it is – my usual low 97s. I know you’re all riveted. 😉 Anyway, Mr. G and I may visit the rose test gardens this afternoon – it’s a mite early for that, but would be nice to get out of the house for a bit. Happy Whateverday to you all!

Tara Brach’s series on the bodhisattva path have been excellent. Here’s how she describes the series:

“During this time of pandemic, we need, more than ever, to feel our connectedness—true belonging with our own being, each other and all life.

“These talks explore the bodhisattva path – practices of an awakening being dedicated to living from love. The invitation is to let this season of close-in and global suffering deepen our collective commitment to creating a more compassionate world.”

I found the one from yesterday evening on how to approach fear and anxiety especially timely. It begins with a fairly long guided meditation followed by a dharma talk with shorter meditations:

    Essential Parfums Orange X Santal.

Working from home=ordering a couple of sample sets from new-to-me brands for entertainment. The samples from Essential Parfums have all been enjoyable; they have a kind of a niche for beginners or minimalists vibe. The Musc smells like the floral musk part of the original Dior J’Adore going on forever, Rose Magnetic is Le Labo Rose 31 without the honking woody amber, and Nice Bergamote is just that (with a smooth floralcy).

Drinking a homemade smoothie with frozen raspberries and pineapple, yogurt, chia, collagen and Whole Foods smoothie powder in coconut almond, which I find that to be neutral flavor. It’s not hugely high in protein, thus the added yogurt and collagen. This, after a shower alternating hot and cold. (Supposedly helps buck up natural immunity.)

Wearing Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere in honor of my sister, from whom I demanded a decant of this. She only wears No. 5, and didn’t love this flanker, so I took some. I’m not a No. 5 girl, but I do like this one. I could see buying it someday.

Why do I sleep so badly on the nights before I decide to hit Whole Foods at early opening? It’s really not that big a deal, other than gloves and mask. This time, they had a good amount of frozen fruit, so I’m set for smoothies till the cows come home.

Traded texts with a friend in Miami who seems to be in throes of the virus. He was tested but doesn’t yet have results. But….he is one week in feeling like he’s fighting off a stealthy boa constrictor. Will feel almost normal then is slammed with delirium and constriction. He’s doing what he can at home. ?

I don’t remember bad dreams, but I had difficulty sleeping and near panic attacks in early March. This was exacerbated in my case by the broken arm, but I think it’s totally natural. As Tara Brach puts it, fear is only trying to protect us.

I also like to just eat some frozen fruits, sort of like ice cream. Pineapple is especially good for this. My dentist doesn’t entirely approve so I do, reluctantly, let it soften a bit.

Andy’s not shipping to the US right now, although I guess other stores carry his stuff..? Personally, if I’m going to make a major investment, I tend to go Chanel. I know they’re not going to end up in the swap pile or bring pangs of regret later. To my mind, they’re more easily justifiable as I feel more confident that I’ll enjoy them for many years to come.

Coromandel might be more versatile, and if you like the current iteration, you might get it while you can.

OTOH, Tauer is unique and his fragrances also change. You’ve prompted me to go put on a touch of his original, early L’AdDM! Not seasonal but I need it now!

      So I’m no help, really.

I vote for any of the Tauers you can still get in the US, for the simple reason that Chanel will have the easier time weathering a worldwide economic disaster. And if you have 4 of his scents on your list, you’re obviously a fan and wanting him to stay in business 🙂

SotD is Bois d’iris by The Different Company.
‘the other’ Bois d’Iris (VC&A) gets mentioned quite often here, but TDC’s Bois d’iris not. I think its very lovely though.

It almost feels like summer right now in the Netherlands. Sunny and quite warm for this time of year.
I spent my whole day indoors handling phone calls, chat and e-mail…luckily today my weekend starts, and because of easter that weekend will be extra long ?

I am slightly stressed though, because i feel a discomfort underneath one tooth (the one that had a root canal treatment in February).
Its not really painful right now, but its definitely NOT what you wish for during a covid19 lockdown. I hope I can still visit my dentist if it gets worse.?

Hope your dental issue doesn’t turn into anything. Now’s not really the time to have any kind of medical issue. Just another stressor to add to the list 🙁

I probably missed you mentioning it. But yeah its great! It was my gateway to iris scents (aka my first full bottle with a prominent iris note).

A Dentist visit also means ‘spending bucket loads of money very very fast’ ? (i have already used the small amount I was insured for)

I have a job, luckily, so I think I’ll manage, but still not something to look forward to.

Jiji, we are dental twins….I’ve got some sensitivity beneath one of the teeth that had a filling replacement in early March. Keeping my fingers crossed because I really do not want to do a dentist visit any time soon.

So fingers crossed for both of us!

Good luck with your tooth! I hope you can get in to see the dentist without too much trouble if you need to.

      Have a good weekend!

I’m wearing le labo’s musc 25 today because I have a lot to do and it’s my “focus, girl!” perfume.

I’m laughing though because I’m currently holding “class” with my period 6 biology class and not a single student has appeared. It’s the last day before spring break so I’m not surprised or annoyed, only amused.

Happy Thursday! Hugs and warm thoughts to you all.

My kids are getting a lot of virtual work and homework. We tried to keep up, but today both my youngest and I had a meltdown and we “skipped” school. Maybe your students had the same problem.

I imagine they did. I’ve already talked by email with several students about managing their workload – apparently though we have been given very strict guidelines about how much we can assign, many of my colleagues are choosing to view that as a “mild recommendation”. Meanwhile, the kids suffer. ?

I can totally understand if you and your child skipped school today! Mental health days are expecially important now.

good for you! if the school-at-home situation is getting tiresome, give it a break for sure.

Where I live the department of education has told school admin that no student can be penalized or held back for work they don’t do during this strange time.

I’ve been telling students and families that whatever they can do is fine, this is not a time to make unhappiness out of schoolwork.

Perfect is the enemy of the good! 😀

My husband and I are both holding optional drop-in discussion sessions (on Zoom) for our (college) courses. Yesterday and today we each had a session with zero students. I think that, rather than settling into a remote-learning routine, many of the students are becoming more frustrated, exhausted, or overwhelmed by the pandemic and by the vastly different approaches their instructors are taking to the situation. And my students who are “social studiers” are really, really struggling to get work done in isolation. I had a meeting yesterday with a seminar student that was more counseling session (for which I am not trained or qualified — I know my boundaries) than academic discussion.

All the students that I have spoken to are totally weirded out and really miss their friends and freedom. It’s weird to forget how much an escape it was to get out of the house and be in an ocean of people your own age.

One of my students asked for a google meeting because she’s freaked out – her mom is due to have a baby next month and she’s terrifed about her mom not returning from the hospital. She didn’t want to talk to her parents about it because they already have enough to worry about. Poor kiddo. I really just wish I could give her a hug.

I haven’t been posting SOTDs much, but I’ve had a great perfume week. Many mornings & afternoons of picking exactly what I’m in the mood for (things don’t always line up for me so successfully.)

Have worn Carnal Flower, Anais Anais, vintage No 19, Dame Orange Blossom (gosh that’s good stuff – I’m obsessing over a bottle) over the past few days. This morning is L’Eau en Blanc, which is making me very very happy.

I’m mixed as well. If it’s a way to keep your perfume business open, kudos, I guess? In this case, it’s a pre-existing (not niche) product that I happened across. Presumably they’re always $6 for 2 oz, which is what I paid. At least I’m imagining that that’s what they’d cost at Anthropologie, if one had picked one up from a basket near the cashier a year ago… But who knows.

But, ya, the price gouging in all sectors is incredibly disconcerting, though not surprising. Tone comes from the top.

It’s cloudy and drizzly today. Decided to dig through samples and use up ones I was hanging onto. Thunked Dusita Issara this morning. I find this one so comforting. Soft lavender and almost honied hay/coumarin. It’s one of the few fougeres I like. I suppose any lavender/tonka combo with be a relative.

My recollection of FN is it’s sweeter and the almond was pretty prominent on me. There’s a slight shaving foam vibe to Issara, which normally I wouldn’t like, but this is so soft and airy.

Wow, lots of comments already! I was bummed I didn’t get a chance to check in yesterday, but I’ll tell you I was wearing Miller et Bertaux Green, Green, Green and…green. It’s siblings with Un Jardin en Mediterranee to my nose.

Today I chose Unsettled by Bruno Fazzolari, just because I thought the pineapple note would be fun. It helped me pick out my outfit too, which is my white button up blouse that has pineapples printed all over it. Oh, and my pj pants lol. I have never smelled the Patou Colony that Unsettled took inspiration from, but I’m reminded of the old Bath & Body Works Coconut Lime Verbena that I wore a lot in college.

So yesterday I was able to finally pick up my first pair of glasses that had been ordered way back in mid March. Well, these are gonna take some getting used to! So far I’m kinda wishing I’d picked a lighter pair because they feel heavy on my nose. Good thing is I only need them for reading and working on the computer. I do like the look of the frames I picked, and I’m hoping I’ll adjust well to wearing them.

The last pair of glasses I got were too heavy and I never ended up wearing them. It’s really hard to know what’s going to be comfortable until they spend some time on your face. Hope yours work out!

Thank you for your sympathy notes yesterday regarding the COVID death of a fellow traveler from my trip to Houston. She was really vibrant and actually, I think she was in her late 80s and lived life to the fullest!

In other news, I decided to take the day off tomorrow. We all got 5 extra paid days off, use it or lose it by the end of the year. I’m one of the lucky ones who doesn’t really need it but I will consider this my COVID mental health day. Of course being “off” doesn’t mean I’m truly off because I am basically in call almost 24 x 7, no pressure ?.

I couldn’t sleep in, so I was up at 7am to fire off my prepped sourdough waffle batter and boule, much to Mr. Teebear’s dismay:

Although we always use the coffee grinder in the AM and don’t tend to disturb one another, apparently the mixer I used to beat egg whites for the waffles is louder. D’oh!

I still maintain that anyone who’s willing to TURN DOWN the freshly made waffles that were being kept warm in the toaster oven for them, merely because the making of said waffles woke them up temporarily, is only spiteing themselves.

That said he did tuck into the fresh sourdough loaf to make a sandwich for lunch, so… I am maybe forgiven?

SotD post-baking is a slightly absurd amount of SL Five O’Clock au Gingembre to combat the grey dreariness of the day.

To defend Mr. Teebear of course, these are the days when a good sulk is totally understandable and anything can be a trigger, much less high speed electrical whirring at 7:30am.

But I bet he would have felt a lot less grumpy if he had eaten the waffles!

I’m continuing Patchouli Week (which I began by accident) by wearing LL Patchouli 24, which as we all know is only a distant cousin and not a real sibling of other patchoulis (“normal” ones). I usually enjoy its weird rubber-tire quality but today it’s hitting me too much in the chin, perhaps because our weather has turned extremely warm and muggy. Yuck to summer in early April! Ugh! it’s sunny now but we have a whole lot of rain forecast and now people are worrying about what will happen if our poor city combines Coronavirus + Flooding? Apocalyptic nightmares. I know, not very cheery today am I. My mom’s assisted living center director is going to start having regular Zoom meetings to talk at once with family members of residents and I am looking forward to that, although I haven’t yet acquired the Zoom app. (Everyone’s Zooming now but I’m still just Nooming!) The bright spot in my day will be in a half hour when I pop by the liquor store to get my curtbside pickup wine order. It’s the big downtown Spec’s for other Houston people and they have such an amazing selection that my wines in this box will be a big treat.

I’ll do a patchoucli sibling with you in VCA Midnight (or is it Moonlight) Patouchli. I envy your wine pickup…a couple of glasses feel like such a treat and reward and somehow a signpost that work is finished and relaxing can begin…a decompression sigh.

There was just too much trouble to be gotten into. We’re not as into wine as we used to be, but have many fond memories of our trips there. I hope you enjoy your order!

So glad to hear you’ll be able to see your mom in a zoom meeting. It’s not hard to use, I promise!

It’s been absurdly warm where I am at. So much so, that I turned the heat off on Tuesday. It’s still off now, but I might have to turn it back on tomorrow if the predicted cooling off comes to pass. ?

A really nasty line of thunderstorms blasted thru these parts earlier this afternoon… bad enough that both cats ran for cover. And they usually don’t care about outside weather in the slightest. Squirrels, however, are another thing altogether. ⚡??

Robin, I did not confiscate the offending box cutter. The accident was definitely caused by operator error. Hopefully said operator learned his safety lesson, and we won’t have to go thru that ever again. I did end up cracking open a nice cold beer to chill out and relax with after things calmed down, including me. ??

SOTD = Byredo Bibliotheque EdP, from the sample stash. Smelling good today!

Hello! Commando perfume-wise so far, but I’ll put something nice on at bedtime.

Wednesday and today I made fairly successful trips to grocery stores. I was up very early today for no apparent reason, and got to the grocery store early enough to get tissues and TP, and pick up a couple of things I needed. With our spring allergies, we were running quite low on tissues, so Mom was happy we have more.

On yesterday’s early afternoon trip, I managed to find a lot of the food on Mom’s list, and got some things I wanted, so that was good, too. I’ve been wearing a mask and gloves, and the stores are set up now so as to encourage more space between people. It’s still kind of stressful, though. I shouldn’t *have to* go to a grocery store or a Walmart for a few days now. We’ll see how that goes.

Oh, I was inspired yesterday by the pictures here to cut some grape hyacinth. Mine looks like the picture at the head of this post. Also, a flowering stalk of the pink ‘Lady Derby’ hyacinth fell down because of the rain and/or wind the night before, so that’s now in the house and in a vase, where I’m enjoying it. The ‘White Lion’ double daffodils are so top-heavy that they fall over under normal conditions, so I cut those, too, and they’re in a different vase.

We used to have grape hyacinths but we don’t anymore…don’t know if squirrels eat them or something else happened. Daffodils had a banner year, though!

I’ve been moving what I can of the plants that the groundhogs, rabbits, etc., seem to find especially tasty to other places where they might not be as accessible. One reason I like daffodils is that they don’t get eaten the way tulips, lilies and daylilies do. But I like all sorts of flowers, whether animals find them edible or not.

Just the thought of grocery shopping stresses me out. Technically, I don’t have to go but I do like to be out and also like to stock up (within reason) of the foods I do consume.

Going out shopping has been stressful lately, definitely. I’m glad if I can find the usual foods we keep around and the household items we use. We like to keep fresh fruit in the house, for instance. And I’m relieved that there doesn’t seem to be a particular extra demand for over-the-counter allergy medicines, because it’s been kind of a bad season for that for us, with the dampness and then the pollen.

Even Mom’s now trying to figure out how she can schedule my shopping trips for the household so I don’t need to go out nearly every day. I let her know that four days out of five a couple of weeks ago was too much. It’s an adjustment for us, but I’m sure she’ll put her planning skills into it.

I was just at a Zoom meeting for work and when asked for inspiring videos I mentioned the garden tours here. Did a little marketing, as I also passed on the url here…

SotD = Byredo Velvet Haze from a sample

VH is a good match for Blursday.

It’s raining and raining, a gentle pitter-patter, sometimes a downpour. No sunshine and not much to do today. I feel like I’m floating along in a gray blurry cocoon.

It’s been fun to read all the comment from top to bottom today. You all smell fantastic! 😀

Robin, a bit of Dylan for you

So, I have given up on trying to keep ‘human (daylight saving/ winter ) time’ and have just given into ‘dog hours. It makes little difference whether I get up at 4 and go to sleep at 8, or get up at 6 and go to bed at 10…and the moon has been spectacular these past few mornings. Maybe I can take up astronomy?

Wearing VCA Moonlight/Midnight Patchouli (can never remember which it is)

I am reading a good book about the days that van Gogh and Gaugin spent living together in the Yellow House in Arles. It’s accessible art history, I suppose, with a good strong narrative and human interest. It would be a good sibling to the Van Gogh film with Willem Dafoe (was that a Julian Schnabel film, can’t remember)

Oh thank you Kanuka, there is nothing like grumbling over someone else’s wrong “best of dylan” list to take your mind off your troubles! (Love that they started out with “Let it be known that ranking Bob Dylan’s 50 best songs is not a relaxing diversion to pass one’s lockdown time. It’s a supremely frustrating exercise that can only end with you looking agog at the songs you have left out, your face crumpling into a WTF? expression.”)

Did you give up on Mirror & the Light completely?
