Wednesday scent of the day 10/23

Posted by Robin on 23 October 2019 135 Comments

It's Hump Day and Mole Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a drop of Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle, which unfortunately does not at all match the artwork I chose for today's post. I do smell appropriately October-ish, though.

Reminder: on 10/25, for International Artist's Day, match a fragrance with an artist or work of art, and tell us about it!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is detail from the Vochol, a Volkswagen Beetle decorated with traditional Huichol beadwork, courtesy of Museo del Arte Popular via Wikimedia Commons. You can read more about the car here.

Love your Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle, actually I love several FM scents. Someone told me Barey’s is in bankruptsy and I worry that will limit my access to sniffing Fm line before buying.

It is hard to say what will happen to Barneys, but it does seem very unlikely that they’ll emerge with all stores.

On the other hand, FM could just decide to expand in other department stores…

FM is in my local Neiman Marcus, perhaps because we don’t have a Barney’s.

      Love that Paul Klee!

JCE would not like it I guess, but to me Terre is one of the Mark Rothko Blue & Brown thing, maybe

I agree he would not like but I also agree that Rothko would fit this perfume.
I was trying to find something with subtle yellow color since Terre is like sunshine to me.

Terre and I have been reunited (and it feels so good) after I was going through my closet..

I am wearing several scents as I was going through a box of smellies and every one that I picked up…I may have sprayed on lol. I mainly smell of oriental goodness atm lol.

Good morning! No perfume yet, unless I still have a bit of Le Petite Chocolatier # 1: Confiture on from last night. Tea this morning is Numi tea: Justine’s Blend.

In the hopes of not being confusing, after the splitmeet is over I’ll round up what I want to give away as freebies. I didn’t put a list up on the last freebiemeet post because I’d need help with postage for things like body sprays and candles. Also, I wasn’t terribly organized at that point.

Scent for a while: sprayed a bit of Kashan Rose right before I left the house. I like it pretty well. 🙂 I don’t know exactly what I’m in the mood for at the moment. If I get ambitious today, I may try to match up with a “Rose, Lily, Lily, Rose” theme. I can picture the painting, but I’m blanking on the artist’s name. Many Dutch still life paintings have those fat Centifolia roses, along with other flowers that don’t necessarily bloom at the same time.

I admire those of you who can think in a more metaphorical way. I remain sadly literal-minded. But I’ll try to come up with pictures of churches or mosques to go with incense scents and such.

Not a Dutch master but John Singer Sargent did Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose if that’s what you’re thinking of

          23 October 2019 at 8:22 pm

Yes, thanks! I was thinking “Sargent,” but I didn’t trust that I was remembering right.

I got to lily with a sample of Donna Karan Gold. It smelled a little metallic to me close up at first, but I liked it from a few inches away.

If one of the flowers was carnation, I can go with Bellodgia EdT. The bottle is probably from the 1980s or 1990s. I don’t know when Nana A. got it, but I know that it had been in one of the boxes of Nana’s things that Mom inherited for a few years, until I found it. I still haven’t gotten the top of the wee bottle of Bellodgia extrait open, but I’m afraid to try anything drastic for fear of breaking the bottle.

Oh god, the mole – realizing that it was just a constant, like a dozen, was the biggest breakthrough I had in science class. Gigantic lightbulb overhead. Memories …

Anyway, I wore Cuir Ottoman yesterday (with thoughts of Deva and her adventures), and today it’s Feu Secret. I’m past the diesel-fumes vibe now and on to the lovely iris and incense phase. Ahhh.

My brain resisted the concept of the mole for an unreasonable amount of time until I had the “oh, duh, that’s all they mean?!?” moment. I remember it taking a few class periods of “what the heck?” before I caught on.

I distinctly remember sitting in chemistry class, mildly engaged, when the teacher said something like “We have now covered anorganic chemistry and will move on to organic chemistry.”
Me (to myself): “?#$%! There is a whole other kind of chemistry? I’m out of here.”

Yes! I spent about half a term of college thinking about becoming a pharmacist … and then (after realizing that chemistry in any form is just not my bag) went running back to my first love, mathematics. One of the things I love most about math is that there are often multiple ways of solving a problem, all of which come to the same answer. Gives a person faith that the answer is really real, you know?

I dug out my rollerball and small bottles tray today and dug around for something that’s been overlooked. Closed my eyes and grabbed Laura Mercier Almond Coconut. I need an app that randomly selects a fragrance from my collection so they get rotated and not forgotten. Does anyone have ideas, does such a thing exist?

Yes, if you have a Basenotes account and list your wardrobe and samples there, there is a ‘pick me something random to wear’ button. You can also record your scent(s) of the day so see what you haven’t worn recently.

This is a much less high-tech option, but what I do with other things I want to work through is pack or stack them all up in a box or drawer. Then any time I want to use them take the one from the front then replace it at the back. It works best with things which are all more or less the same shape and size, which I guess might not be the case here 🙂

Haven’t really broken into the fall-winter fragrances yet, even though the temperature is in the 30s. Clinging to the long-gone summer in Tocca Colette.

Last night I watched The People Under the Stairs for the first time. I wish I’d have seen it as a kid, the fusion of 80s childhood adventure movie with horror made it really fun.

Fils de Dieu, because I compared it to Winter Palace which I wore yesterday. They are not hugely similar at all but might fill a similar perfume space for me. Fils is a bit more loud and maybe a bit more fun, Winter Palace is more refined and elegant (but maybe I’m influenced by the pricing here). If Fils is Anna from Frozen, then Winter Palace would be Elsa.

    SOTD = Carner Barcelona D600

Beautiful sunny coolish day in NYC! D600 is just the perfect woody, nutty, iris, vetiver, vanilla scent. My bottle is almost empty but I have a BUB!

And for a fun Halloweeney picture although nothing to do with the fragrance or the CP:

LVEB woman is not in the office today…

In another commuter misbehaving moment, a guy stepped off the curb into the street, stopped and kept on texting. Meanwhile, traffic was going past him until finally, a car that wanted to use the lane he was standing on beeped its horn twice before the guy looked up and stepped back. Oy!

I was in a hurry today, quickly grabbed my husband’s Tuscan leather. It’s perfect for Autumn!

Today I had a day off and visited my brother and my nephews (1,4 and 4 y/o).

Wow, working again after a few months at home is exciting and it gives me energy. But all the new impressions are also quite overwhelming.
I used to work at a small organisation where i knew everyone (120 people), but at my new job…..I am one of thousands ??

I’m wearing MFK APOM. Beautiful and happy scent for a pleasant day here in Houston. It’s finally stopped being 90 degrees all the time.

Our Astros had a disappointing loss last night, but I have to concede it was a truly good baseball game, and this World Series promises to be of epic proportions!

I am in Diptyque Essences Incensee 2015. I love this jasmine & rose combination in this fragrance, but mainly it’s the Jasmine that is the regal queen here. The solid is beautiful as well and goes perfectly with Mandy Aftel’s Jasmine face elixir!
    Happy hump day.
I love the beadwork in that photo Robin, and your selection of art for Terre makes me want to try it at Sephora next trip.

How sweet, thank you for asking Ltsg! I have a spray sample, and this is my first time trying it. I find it to be quite reminiscent of Shalimar, but much quieter and more delicate and not as dense. It’s beautifully blended with just a hint of powder and indistinguishable (to my nose) florals, and the dry down is predominantly a soft vanilla on my skin.

Here’s what Luca Maffei has to say:

Thank you! I recall that you were interested in trying this – shall I set it aside for you? And… in the far drydown I’m smelling a musky, nutty wood accord that I’m not a fan of. Just sayin’.

It’s pretty nice out today, but I’m taking a couch day anyway. I’ve been randomly sampling perfume all morning. I did have to run to the pharmacy though and decided I needed an official perfume to leave the house. I went with Dolce Vita because the color reminded me of the golden leaves outside, plus it’s just gorgeous.

I noticed my decant of Jacques Zolty Van-Ile was looking lower than I thought it should be, so I thought I better wear it. I absolutely love it and of course I can’t find it anywhere. It’s a lovely citrus, almondy, powdery, vanilla chypre (oakmoss and patchouli) done by Cecile Zarokian.

I’m channeling Sargent’s “La Carmencita” today in Seville à l’Aube. Of course, her clothing may have nothing to do with Seville, but I like Sargent and I love the beautiful yellow in her dress. So, there you go….

Tried to thunk a decant of Jacomo Art Collection No8, but could not finish it with lots of sprays. Will need at least another wearing, but not tomorrow.
Got a decant of Memoir Woman today, so i am wearing this. And i finally finished sewing my York Pinafore dress, so i can wear it tomorrow for work. I made it from dark denim and its really comfortable. Will pair it with with a striped tshirt.

I love No. 8 – I have to remember to get my bottle back from a friend to whom I loaned it.

I am always admiring of people who sew (particularly people who can sew a pinafore dress to wear out in public).

Wasn’t going to wear perfume today but I walked past the local seller of Le Labo perfumes, so ducked in to see if they had Baie 19. They didn’t so ended up in a spritz of Santal 33 as I don’t think I’ve ever tried it. So now I’m walking around smelling like pickle juice which is a little distracting.
