Tuesday scent of the day 10/8

Posted by Robin on 8 October 2019 198 Comments

Tuesday, Ada Lovelace Day and World Octopus Day. (A quick PSA: the next splitmeet will be held on Saturday the 26th.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Néroli Outrenoir. Tea at the moment is an Upton Lumbini Estate Ceylon with a pinch of Mariage Frères Chandernagor.

Reminder: on 10/11, celebrate National Apple Month by wearing a perfume with an apple note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Calligraphy Saffron, from a decant. This is my first time to wear this, and I may have to indulge in a full bottle.

When I first tried it I was disappointed because I thought I could barely smell it, but then I’d get this soft breeze of orange blossom and jasmine and fell in love with it. It is soft, but it really does remind me of a California breeze.

In early morning sprays of Nobile 1942 Ambra Nobile, which I thought might be too much (it’s an almost candied amber – very sweet) but turned out to be just right for a very cool (or cold, I guess – it was 45F around 7 a.m.) morning. It’s now turned into a gorgeous fall day – full sunny sunshine with nary a cloud, leaves on the ground, on its way to warming to 70F.

I’ve got an itchy sprayer finger (and apparently craving roses, cherries and anything nutty or powdery) and ebay bucks to spend. Any input on these?:

Lancome Tubereuses Castane, Parfait de Roses, Roses Berberanza
    VCA Rose Rouge
    YSL Exquisite Embroidery, Velours
    Nobile 1942 Cafe Chantant
    TF Lost Cherry, Fvcking Fabulous

Also just learned that Edward Bess has a new fragrance out – Last Night – has anyone tried it? He also sells $8 samples of all of his perfumes now, which is lovely. (I didn’t look into shipping costs, though.)

I know F* Fabulous doesn’t get any love, but I do love it. There has been a decant on my Ebay shopping cart for a couple of weeks already. I might get it at any time now.

Haha! I was just going to say that I did not much like FFabulous (or Lost Cherry, sadly, as I like cherry notes in other frags). I am glad you and Nancyleandros chimed in before my nattering nabob of negativism.

That is absolutely fine! We all have different tastes, that is why blind buys based on comments are quite risky. Always good to sample first, even though 99% of my purchases are blind. Not so many regrets so far. ?

Feel free to talk me out of it 😉

Reviews are all over the place. And not just because most people are just responding to the name, but also in terms of what it actually smells like.

(And frankly, I find the Cherry name much harder to take than FF.)

Well, okay. Based on my completely subjective experience (!), I would say that both FF and LC are divisive enough that FB’s should not be purchased w/o testing first… My last near miss was Chanel’s new Paris-Riviera, which is supposed to be heavy on the orange and neroli–two notes I love. What could go wrong? Chanel + Neroli= Heaven? Right? I can’t remember what happened, but I did not wind up ordering it. When I finally tested it, it was a total no-go for me. I mean I really did not like it at all. It wasn’t “meh” or “just pretty”, it was blech! (Lots of folks love this one, I know!!!!)

          • kpaint says:
            8 October 2019 at 2:24 pm

Oh! I’m not looking to blind buy a bottle. Just looking for input on some potential decant purchases. I trust you guys more than review sites 🙂

    • Nancyleandros says:

I agree with pl67, FF is so much better than it’s tacky name. Light leather and I seem to get some incense. I couldn’t stomach the price of a bottle, so I picked up the body spray.

Oh, goodness, I’m not sure. I tried it on skin when it first came out, but that’s been awhile.
I’ll have to see if I have a sample in my stash and compare them.

I am so curious because if the spray is close enough to the perfume I might get it instead of the decant.

        • Nancyleandros says:
          8 October 2019 at 1:06 pm

I found a little sample of the edp. Sprayed it and the body spray, one on each hand.
I’d go for the decant, M. In the direct comparison, the body spray seems a little one dimensional.
          Hope this helps!

I have high expectations for today because: 1) non-adulting 2) blue skies with a few wispy clouds and temps maxed out in the mid 60’s. 3) I have already picked out my CP perfume for Friday, which has NEVER happened before. 4) spending the day at the park with the most beautiful person I know ?!

I am wearing Jasmin rouge, in an attempt to brighten up the cloudy weather.

Right now i am cuddled up on the sofa with tea and a book. Its the real life story of two Jewish sisters in the resistance. I am just 50 pages in and already hooked. And that does not happen often.

It was in new a few weeks ago, film rights were bought by a Dutch production company… I can see how this story is very suitable for a movie, but this is such a well written book with a big heart, a voice of humanity….i hope they will respect it and not make it into something like Black Book….

MF Earl Grey French Blue today, with a lemon drop cupcake. I bought 4 cupcakes last Sunday to eat as breakfasts through the week. I need the extra oomph this week!

Trying a teeny spritz of OJ Ormonde Elixir from a sample. The oudh dominates in a really good way, even though i tend to shy away from it.

    Good morning Y’all….

Just checking in to say howdy…..I had a migraine on Sunday and Monday so I’m giving myself an extra day without perfume to make sure my olfactory/nervous system/brain is back online and won’t be irritated by anything. (I seem to perfectly fine now) I got my October Indigo discovery set yesterday and can’t wait to dig in tonight or tomorrow! Also got a sample of YSL Libre in the mail and might try that tonight. Good sniffing straight ahead!

My “tea” of the day is a very unsophisticated Mountain Dew….LOL!

Solstice Scents Kitchen today…notes are Pumpkin, Sugar Cookies, Peach Preserves, Spice Breads, Danishes, Caramel, Vanilla & Sweet Wood Smoke.

As I was getting my daughter into her car seat she said, “I love your pumpkin spice perfume.” ? ?

It started a bit candle-y at first but is now a nice spicy baking day scent.

I’m still like that, but now when I make an effort I just look old and weird. Even my kids will say, What’s up with the make up? I am now officially an older, frumpy woman!

Weirdly, it is cool enough this AM that I am finally keen to test my swapmeet Chanels. Starting in Paris-Venise–so far, pretty, but not rocking my world.

Weirdly cool because our gas and electric company in California is planning to cut power to 600,000 people in the next two days as a safety precaution due to the heat and high winds. My house is in the outage zone (I am guessing Pixel’s is as well). The news on this has been light, and I am really concerned about elderly folks and people who rely on electricity for health reasons. As the kids say, “Brace yourself!”

Wow! Cutting power for so many people sounds extreme. They must be very concerned to use such a drastic measure. Is it only residential or does that include hospitals and nursing homes?

      • Oakland Fresca says:

I know. That number sounds high, but it is what the WSJ is reporting. One part of me wonders if some of the outages may be punitive– as in the PG&E (said gas and electric co.) is saying that if they are to be held legally and financially accountable for the Paradise Fire, then they will just cut-off power to hundreds of thousands of people every time it gets hot and windy.

PS It includes hospitals and nursing homes. A friend who works at a nearby hospital says it has four days back-up via its generator. I am not sure how that compares to other hospitals.

I got an email this morning that Atelier has their advent calendars for sale already. I bought two, both as gifts. Christmas is coming, and I know that because my Costco already has the artificial trees on display. It’s an intermittent sun day here in Portland, and I am wearing Organza Indecence.

Thanks for everybody’s good wishes yesterday for Bertie’s checkup. The vet said he’s older than the humane society guessed, about 12 rather than 8, but in general good health other than slight renal disease. Oh, and his remaining two teeth will have to come out in the next 4-6 months. Wet food for life! He’ll be so happy.

    Copious wearing of

SOTD = St. Clair Scents Pandora

because I can, from my travel spray.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B3XkejNhk2q/?igshid=115m5grirkl92

My short summary of what Pandora smells like to me is apple up top, then equal parts green, earthy and floral over an incensy and resinous base?

I ended up working from home today because of a meeting at the ungodly hour of 6AM. You would think this is bad enough but not having known that until yesterday, I already set up 4 calls tonight starting at 9PM and into 1AM tomorrow morning. All I can say is that the people on the phone better be wide awake because I accommodated their time zone. One call will be particularly difficult because I am giving them constructive feedback that will require them to start thinking instead of copying and pasting blindly. Oy!

I ventured outside for 18 seconds to get my mail and it is just a cold gloomy gray day. It makes a difference if the trees are already in their autumn glory but most of them are still green!

Wish me luck please…tomorrow is a call with the Administrative Law Judge on the Medicare Appeal. Part of me wants the other parties tomorrow to not show up. If they show up and demure returning the out-of-pocket costs and the ALJ finds in their favor, I am taking it all the way to Federal District Court (on appeal) and if that doesn’t work out, there may be a possible lawsuit which will cost the other parties more on administrative costs alone AND they will have a lot more to explain on irrefutable evidence of falsification of medical records as well as malpractice, incompetence, poor judgment and neglect (I may or may not go forward as it will eat into my time as well; one sister is fully on board and the other one can be persuaded).

SOTD Encre Noir thanks to the freebie-meet. Such a great everyday vetiver. It doesn’t make me sniff my arm obsessively like Vetiver Extraordinaire, but the last time I wore VE to work, a student asked, “Is something burning in here?”

SOTE is Superstitious, which I like better than the last time I tried it. It feels both technically beautiful and not very friendly.

Same on being tardy. I’m having to adjust to going from going from Central time in Alabama to Mountain in New Mexico and now Pacific.

      You smell great!

Very chilly here today. To combat this, I am wearing a few sprays of vintage Shalimar tonight.

It’s supposed to freeze overnight; let’s hope not!

Brr! We are still well above freezing at night here, although we got close last week.

I have nothing with an apple note that I know of- hoping to get ideas from you all this week!

Wore Good Girl Gone Bad today and I have to say, I smelled great lol. I haven’t worn it much but I kept getting whiffs this afternoon and thinking, “someone smells so good,” and it was me haha.

Tried my sample of Azemour. Loved the bright opening citrus, which was of course fleeting, but the drydown was a winter-cozy incensy chypre. This would be so perfect for the winter blues.

This evening I’m sniffing at my dab of Cowboy Grass. A more thorough investigation will be required!

Commando Monday and Tuesday, except for Bigelow Lemon lotion a few times in there. I’ll try to find the opportunity to experiment with some samples.
