Wednesday scent of the day 10/2

Posted by Robin on 2 October 2019 245 Comments

Happy Hump Day and International Day of Non-Violence. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Aedes de Venustas Oeillet Bengale.

Reminder: 10/4 is World Animal Day...do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Chanel Cristalle EdT. Few sprays left to thunk it. Getting anxious about it. ?

I’m in leftover Tiger’s Nest from yesterday. Coffee first.

I stopped drinking coffee for about a month, and it was going well. Then, I had a week that was just so busy, and I was waking up a little too tired in the morning, and I fell off the wagon with a great big thump. Been having triple espressos from a little moka pot topped with cream every morning for the past week, and they’ve been. so. good.

SOTD is Shalimar Parfum Initial and probably some Shalimar body powder to help in the heat

I finished Three Women yesterday, it took me 3 days. After I read the prologue I was intrigued and couldn’t put it down. Very sexually charged nonfiction novel, which borderlines voyeurism. Now back to my fiction greek mythology..

My first experience with No 19 Poudre was at the airport. I sprayed it on a strip and put it in my purse next to a tube of lip balm. Next time I opened the lip balm, it smelled like No 19, lol.

It is so elegant, I am not a powder person but it reeks of great shoes and perfect cheekbones!! It really grew on me as it became associated with special events and important memories for which I chose to wear it.

I got two spider bites on my foot late summer and golly they itched. Turned into the strangest flat red-brown spots, one the size of a quarter, the other a dime, that really impressed my sons. The burning itchiness was maddening though. Hope your bite heals soon!

I am not a medical professional like many of our NSTers, nor do I play one on TV, but I got chewed up by tsetse flies in Africa.

No anti itch cream or lotion worked until my sister put gold bond medicated powder on them. Within hours the itching and weeping were under control.

Speaking of nurses, there’s a sweet story on CNN about WW II nurses, some of them 95 years old who received commendations today for their service. 85% of all nurses in the US served in some capacity during that war.

Thanks for the link. My parents live in the east of the country which has been suffering with some serious dry conditions this year. They have had buckets of rain in recent days, so I can’t wait to see what it has done to the fields and the trees.

Was going to do a week of Zoologist (like several others) but came down with a cold and they just haven’t been speaking to me. LADDM yesterday. Will do something comforting and spicy today, too.

    —— begin off topic rant — —

My grandma is 84 and a fall risk. For several years now, I’ve paid for an automatic fall detection necklace for her. We had to change providers a few months ago, as her previous necklace broke and our then provider had hardware supply issues.

If you’re shopping for a similar device, you’ll discover none of these companies have online purchase options and clearly posted prices. They all force you to fill out lead generation forms and/or call them. At least that was my experience with everyone I encountered.

So, back in July I make a purchase over the phone. I was very explicit about my needs: an automatic fall detection unit, in a necklace form factor, that would work both in and out of the home. We had a lengthy conversation about the old provider. There was no ambiguity as to what I wanted. I paid for a year of service up front, as of course there was a deal.

Yesterday my grandma had a fall. Fortunately, she was just a little bruised. There was no fall detection. She called the company (through the necklace) to inquire why. She was told the service wasn’t enabled, and would cost an additional $10 a month.

I called this morning. They said a supervisor would listen to the tape of the original sales call and contact me within 24 hours. I asked for a copy of the tape or transcript and was told I would have to get a lawyer. (Agent was in no way startled by that request, BTW.)

We’ll see what happens. If they don’t correct it, I’ll contact the credit card company for a charge back.

The thing is, I would have happily paid what they’re asking if it had been clearly communicated up front and I thought that, in return, I was getting service from a more reliable, trustworthy company.

It just feels shady. Maybe I’m being pessimistic and they’ll do the right thing.

That is just awful. It’s amazing that companies can get away with this type of shady dealings. They risk the health of people for a buck. There is no accountability and, frankly, no conscience. I’m glad your grandmother is okay and hope you feel better soon!

Sounds like shady business practices all right! I also hate the fact that you have to have people call you back and then do this over the phone…it’s so annoying when there are whole industries that “monopolize” how they deal with customers and leave you with no other options.

I’m glad your grandmother is ok for the most part. The rest of that story is SO common and frustrating, I certainly hope they can be held accountable; in caring for my parents, it’s just amazing and awful how many hoops there are to be jumped through dealing with their safety services, medications, Medicare, etc etc. You have my deepest sympathy.

If you are in the US, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and the forward it to the company. Also review on Yelp. That is crazy. Why on earth would you buy the necklace without the service? To make a fashion statement???

I think that programs that are supposed to help the elderly can be particularly underhanded.

I am sorry that your grandma fell. The best news is that she was okay!

      UPDATE:

The company ended up doing the right thing and adding the automatic fall detection service. We’ll test it to make sure it’s working.

It still leaves a bad taste: I can’t help but wonder if the result would have been the same if I was actually an elderly person with mild dementia.

Good news: grandma got x-rays and there are no broken bones.

Also a coworker who had been going through a possible breast cancer diagnosis got an “oops, nothing to worry about” from her doctor today, after several days of worry and multiple procedures.

Thanks everyone for all your recommendations!

Scent of the morning: 4711 Pink Pepper & Grapefruit, from the split that Pixel did when she realized the bottles of Acqua Colonia she’d gotten were nearly 6 oz. each. I find the scent very pleasant, and refreshing on a hot day.

Yes, Pixel said she didn’t realize that she was ordering “perfumed doorstops.” 🙂 The price per milliliter — 170 ml in this case — would have been only in cents, not dollars, but she wasn’t expecting that.

Gosh, yes. The weatherpeople in Philadelphia told us we broke heat records. I just stayed in, but I still felt warm.

At bedtime I tried 4711 Kumquat & Myrrh, also from those splits. I mostly got the myrrh part of it, which was rather strong to me to start, but faded or mellowed fairly soon. I wouldn’t put it in the “refreshing citrus” category as I think of it, but I had been wanting to try it.

    Good morning Y’all….

Feeling very ladylike and a little bit vintage in Ego Facto Poopoo Pidoo. Orange blossom and rice powder makes me feel halfway put together! 🙂

Smelly off topic unrelated story: This past weekend we did a little weekend trip to East Central Alabama, and one of our stops was at Horseshoe Bend Military Park. We’d all hiked around a bit and were heading back to the car, but the husband was just standing by the river….SMELLING the forest and water and fall leaves and commenting it was a scent memory from his childhood! Our goal is to see EVERY SINGLE National Park site before we kick the bucket. I guess we’ll smell them all too! 🙂 I hope we stay healthy; we have a bunch to go!

There is this a fun and beautiful movie called Find Me, about a man who is sent to several national parks in search of a colleague… super beautiful.

But there are very sad elements in the movie–be warned. Spoiler and trigger alert–if seeing someone sick with cancer is too tough, this may not be the movie for you. I had no clue about this plot twist when I started watching the movie with my cancer survivor (barely) son. Really enjoyed the wacky-indie quality of the movie, but wish I had been forewarned.

Random only slightly related story. My younger son, who is 16 and ‘on the spectrum’ and couldn’t care less about his clothes inherits various items from his big brother as well wears the usual Old Navy, Gap, and Uniqlo sartorial splendor. He came home the other day in an inherited jacket and in great wonder said, “Mom, the kids at school say I am totally Gucci!” So I asked, somewhat wary, “Is that a compliment?” He said, “Umm. Yeah. Gucci means cool.” Guess that’s a thing! His jacket? http://www.npchn.com/874-fred-perry-red-jacket-1841.aspx?zenid=oiro4rhbguj3e5quib87rq3vp1 No idea why it’s Gucci!

I joined you in Champaca today, which seems I like more than you do… wish it had more lasting power though.

That’s a tough temp drop. Layers are the only answer. When I commuted between San Francisco and the East Bay, I often would freeze in SF summer wind and fog as I walked to the train. Then 40 minutes later the train doors would open to oven-like heat. It was sometimes a 40 degree difference…

Zoologist Dodo because I thought a fougere might be nice today. It’s my first time giving the sample a full wearing instead of quick sniff, and I don’t think it works for me. It has a sweaty, fuzzy note that lasts for a while. I thought maybe blackcurrant bud, which can have a sweaty or urinous quality, and it may be even though the note list doesn’t mention it. It does say “berries” though.

Oh well, I’ll stick the sample in someone’s swap or freebie package some time so they can give it a try.

Oh my, it’s so beautiful in my neck of the woods today yipee! It’s a dry, sunny 80 degrees with a light breeze and the trees have just started to turn. Another plus is that the deafening nightly racket of the dadgum katydids has greatly diminished recently so the nights are peaceful. I’m wearing Fleurs de Sel – yet another random pick.

PSA for the non-US gang: the decanting site MyScentsei offers free worldwide shipping. They’re currently having a sale. I can’t personally vouch for them as I’ve never made a purchase, so maybe someone who has will chime in.

Too darn hot, particularly for freaking October. Getting myself ready to confess to Donatella and atone by going to the thrift store with my sister. Wearing the last of my simple English rose from Caswell Massey.

Hi everyone, I’m too hot (at home) to wear any perfume, but enjoying my cats. (But not specifically their “perfume” if you can call it that.) Just stopped in to say hi. The picture of the sheep made me laugh as I wondered if Robin had discovered an unusual sheep-smelling scent. Probably also not ideal! Although I supposed there are fragrances with lanolin notes (?).

I’m in the mood for something opulent today, so I’ll be gracing the office with Nahema.
I haven’t quite turned my mind to the animal theme, but I might wear Salome this evening in honour of hyrax bodily functions 🙂

Champaca as I ran out the door earlier. Faded now, so may put something else on.

Am home with a fan going. I know my husband will walk in soon and start blasting the AC. It’s perfectly comfortable in here for me, but his first words will be, “aren’t you hot?”

Decided to take a class tomorrow night on fixing common knitting mistakes. What I really want, though, is to learn to knit continental style. I’m just way too slow when I knit and would like to find a better way.

Bingo! His first words were, “It’s 91 degrees out!” The good news he went into the bedroom and turned on that AC and left me in the living room with just the fan.

My husband also runs much hotter than I, but he’s a bit of a Scrooge about the AC, so we’ll be sleeping in the heat unless I. An convince him to turn it back on!

Hey Twin. At least for a few hours. I reapplied at noon and again around 4PM.

I can live without AC when the temps are below 80 degrees. At 91, I would need it.

Hell bent on thunking a few bottles that are taking up too much real estate. Got bottles like this? Too little left to swap but you cannot bear to toss it unfinished?

Hence I am in Chanel No. 5 edp—won’t be replacing when it is done.

N°5 parfum spray and body lotion. N°5 I wore exclusively for years when I was a wee Flopper, and I always go back to this. Some days I feel like I’ve made perfume too complicated, and want to get rid of all my other bottles. Happy hump day! ?

It was rainy in the morning, so i sprayed Meharees. When the weather cleared up, i would have liked something less cinnamony. Its getting on my nerves today…
Took a walk along the Yonne channel for 2 hours. The boyfriend prepared boeuf bourginion for tomorrow, its still in the oven. Tastes better if you warm it up….

I’ve been in my Parfumeur H sample of Rose Green sine Monday, when I flew to London Heathrow to visit friends in the wilds of Hampshire, & as usual I have hand-carry only luggage. My flight from Aberdeen was cancelled late on Monday afternoon, the one “the world’s favourite airline” rebooked me on left six and a half hours after my original one had been scheduled to depart, so by the time I got here I was hungry, thirsty, tired & a tad grumpy! Swift recovery overnight Monday & have had a lovely yesterday & today pottering around the local villages, eating out & catching up; we’re having breakfast out tomorrow prior my flying home – fingers crossed there’ll be no repeat of anything approaching Monday’s fiasco…!

Ok, I admit I’m cheating on the CP, but I still feel pretty darned clever. I’m wearing ElDO Afternoon of a Faun. No it’s not a fawn but it’s a pretty animalic man, right? Someone from this site sent it to me, but I kind of forgot it. Thank you! I really like it. But then I’m a big immortelle fan! That plus leather does give this a rather desirable goat-y quality. I’m going to put this into more circulation.
