Wednesday scent of the day 9/25

Posted by Robin on 25 September 2019 182 Comments

Hump Day and National Comic Book Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am copying BobH by doing salty with Hermès Eau des Merveilles.

Reminder: on 9/27 we're going to Flavortown...wear a scent that you associate with one of the five basic tastes (sweet, sour, salty, umami or bitter). Triple bonus points for starting on Monday and doing all 5. Suggested by Regina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the DC Comics Wonder Woman and Cheetah salt & pepper shakers are about $18 at Amazon.

I’m doing bitter today in Azemour, and saving Eau des Merveilles for tomorrow so I don’t overwhelm my doctor at an annual checkup visit.

Great choice Robin and, of course, you smell marvellous!
I’m doing sour today in Mary Greenwell’s Cherry for its sour, erm, cherry note.

Various online reviews have done a better job comparing them than I could. In fact, after reading about it, I thought it was a given I would love it. WRONG!

Unfortunately there is a particular woody note that is overwhelming to me, taking it close to scrubber territory. Immediate disgust.

I wish I could hone in on what it is. I have plenty of woody frags in my collection! But there’s something, perhaps a specific arochemical or when it’s used in too strong a concentration, that does me in. I can never tell from a notes list. So frustrating.

Food- carrots- older, tougher, bitter rooty carrots… Yes Iris Silver Mist! I noticed my decant had evaporated alarmingly, so I had to over apply to use it up ! Thunk! Now, the conversation with my discretionary spending fund begins, since I obviously need to replace it. I cannot be without this sterling example of the perfumer’s art. So, another little decant? Finally spring for a bottle? Ddecisions, decisions. And in the meantime, I smell great! Once the first carrots blast fades a bit, this is a beautiful iris.

Why can’t I subscribe to the thread today? Hmm?

I had a 3ml decant (from STC) that was evaporating pretty quickly, but I rarely reached for it. I’d say a decant is good if you’re planning to use it up quickly.

I’m in a definite sweet flavoured scent with MPG Fleur des Comores. This is an incredibly beautiful scent, and I’m afraid that when I pulled out my bottle, I found it had seriously evaporated since the last time I used it. There’s something wrong with the top and the stopper. Very sad! It also looks to be unavailable at most of the obvious places. It’s got floral notes and ylang-ylang and vanilla but somehow the entire blend just comes off as very buttery–almost to the point where I could try it as a salty scent, but I’ll do something else tomorrow for that. If you have not visited this one in awhile, I definitely recommend it (if you can find any).

I have a full bottle. Ulta in the US stocks it online. The original MG was lovely, but the lavender and smokey vanilla in it did odd things on my skin until the scent disappeared completely within a couple hours. With Intense, Guerlain has balanced the lavender so well with the jasmine, iris, vanilla and tonka that it feels to me like a perfect scent. It’s not boringly linear. It morphs. I never get the same progression twice. The patchouli is more pronounced than in the original, which makes me happy, but it’s still subtle, layered beneath that gorgeous Guerlainade of benzoin, vanilla, and tonka. The mandarin, lavender, sandalwood and patchouli counter the sweetness of the scent incredibly well. Longevity is also much better, at least on my skin, than the original MG. “Sexy” is loaded label that I don’t apply to fragrances much, but damn it fits here.

Bitter – Jardin sur le Nil, opening note reads bitter to me. It’s going to be a scorcher today, so this is a good choice. But I’m starting to hanker for some cooler temp scents!

I’m in Chanel Eau de Cologne for a workout and will be in Bigarade Concentree after my shower, which is somewhat bitter at the start. Long live the run on sentence.

I’m feeling grateful today. There are several people at my gym who are rehabbing from injury or catastrophic illness. A couple have been at it for quite awhile. Rehab is hard work y’all, and I so admire their determination and grit. They don’t complain, they just do their thing.

In Violette in Love that came as a bonus in the swapmeet. Pretty but very fleeting… I’ll re-up with some other violet in my collection later today.

I’ve been moonlighting in addition to my regular work because I am enjoying writing for a totally new, to me, industry. But this AM I got an email asking if I’d do a third article this month, on grieving. Thought about it and decided I do not want to gain any expertise in grieving, even a very superficial expertise for a short article. Too much of that going around already!

    Hello All! Humpday!

Am in BeautryPie’s Lime, Fig leaves and Tea- not exactly a gourmand!

    2) Thanks to the rain and the mild temps, my fall veggie seeds have sprouted and are taking off! The Nasturtiums are now conspiring to take over the entire back yard, and my arugula, radicchio and Japanese greens are growing faster than I can eat them! The tomatoes are ready to be pulled and put on the compost heap, along with the cucumber and pepper plants. The herbs are going to bolt in a bit, I think, so I have been making lots of green herbal pesto style sauces and storing in the freezer.

It can get very cold and snowy here! Most years though it is steel grey and rainy- perfect weather for pasta and soups, which these sauces will go into.

A long time ago, when my father was still alive, he and Mom had thrown out some old tomato plants on the compost heap, at the far edge where their yard bordered a big hay field. Imagine their surprise in the following year when the compost heap boasted the biggest, best tomatoes of the entire garden!

Tommy Bahama Set Sail St Bart’s for women from the swap meet. I was only expecting a decant, but was generously sent the whole 30ml tester bottle (thanks Laurels!)!
I’d give it a salt point since it has a margarita vibe and a subtle “sand” accord that also smells a wee bit salty. There’s a vague hint of coconut in the mix, too. It’s a bit masculine and almost smells a little shaving cream-esque in the beginning, but I’m finding it pleasant and kinda fun!

Doing my tandem CP by wearing a new acquisition (from the past six weeks) and identifying the taste(s).

SOTD = Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque (vintage)

I got a partial bottle and whoa, it’s a gorgeous, if slightly animalic, honeyed tobacco, patch, leather, tonka number, an edgier (rougher) version of Chergui and equally wonderful!

Due to train issues, I ended up working from home today…not complaining of course as I was able to go out at lunch to address something that I would have had to use up part of Saturday morning to do.

Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts and methods on wardrobe management. At the end of the day, the stark sobering reality boils down to what I should have left when it’s time for someone to tie up my affairs. My siblings and I have done that for dad and mom and pretty much no clothing or footwear got left behind as a hand me down. In a way, we’re lucky that we did not have to empty a house but the bad news is there’s still a lot of leftover stuff.

What was the conversation about wardrobe management? Right now I have exactly what works for me. Everything is black and everything has been paired down and I have the bare minimum. Some of you have seen pictures of my closet so you know what I am talking about. I could literally dress myself in the dark in the morning and everything would match :)

Well hello there stranger! I was lamenting that I need to do a drastic pare down of clothes and I just couldn’t let go. I asked for recommendations of questions to ask oneself that can help decide on keep vs give away. I admire your all black outfits that work well together; however, it is not the minimalistic lifestyle I’m going for (yet). I have been using plastic tubs to hold the giveaway pile and I then include the tub when I drop off the clothes. Tubs attract stuff and I will keep only the bare minimum.

Oh no, do you work at a shelter? I used to volunteer at a no-kill shelter here in Houston. They put out a desperate call today for fosters as they have taken in so many animals from the flooding that Imelda caused in East Texas. I’m thinking of taking in some foster kittens. I’ve fostered kittens before and loved it.

I don’t know if I’ll hit the bitter category this week — oakmoss seems to be one of those things I’m not into. Perhaps myrrh would fit as being bitter? I like a lot of sorts of incense, after all.
