Monday scent of the day 7/29

Posted by Robin on 29 July 2019 312 Comments

Monday, National Lipstick Day and International Tiger Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: pretend vacation in Parfums de Nicolaï Musc Monoï.

Reminder: on 8/2 we're doing edition 3 of the Guessing Game...describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is. Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

If you’re interested, Molton Brown Ylang-Ylang which is in production reminds me very much of Aqua Allegoria Ylang-Vanille.

My scent of the day is very fleeting on me, but it maybe because I can’t smell the musk. The perfumer is easy on the eyes and is from a well know house but does not share the same blood line. The ad for my SOTD is fronted by a well know actress that at one point, years ago, apparently wore a vial of her partners blood around her neck.

Lipstick of the Day for Lipstick Day is Maybelline New York Color Sensational Shine Compulsion in Spicy Mauve

    Tea is David’s Breakfast

    Yay, guessing game.

    OK, my SOTD:

This scent is all about a certain tree – its leaves, sap and fruit.
The leaves can be used as clothes (of sorts), tha sap is milky, and the fruit is sweet and delicious.
The scent is not only based on the fragrance of this tree but is also named after it (the first one of the season, apparently). And the perfumer who created it also made another popular scent based on this note.

I’m in several sprays from the bottle with the cute, multicolored elephants.? (cm8 will know this one for sure?)
For National lipstick day, I would love to find the perfect nude lippy for my complexion. My most recent is Smashbox Audition, and it’s close but just not quite perfect.
In other non perfume related news, madtownteen and I spent several hours this weekend getting her packed and ready for summer camp. This is her fourth year and she is super excited. She’ll be joining her college age sister who has been working there since the beginning of the month. I know they’ll be happy to see each other, they’re like peas and carrots, those two.? It has always been my tradition to make up their bunk in the cabin they’ll be staying in and then I slip a card under the pillow and hope that they find it the first night when they go to bed (by now they know to look for it). I even did it for my older daughter when I dropped her off July 1. I texted her the next day and asked her if she found it. She texted me back “you mean the one I saw you put under my pillow as you were making my bed? yeah I found it.” ? Lol.

Hajuusuri did a great job describing the two below. The Vanira is now selling at Twisted Lily on sale for 48$ for 100 ml. So it’s the more affordable of the two. Plus, I already have an FB of it in the ?.

I’m a big fan of Saint Pinky Nude from Lipstick Queen. It is my go-to everyday color. I’ve now gone through three tubes, which is unheard of for me. It’s available at Ulta and on Amazon. I struggle with nudes…they wash me out horribly. This one doesn’t. There are other nudes in the LQ collection.

That one looks nice! And great price. My Ulta doesn’t carry them in store unfortunately.
I agree, nudes can be tricky. Anything that veers orange looks terrible on me. What looks good on the back of my hand doesn’t always look good on my lips and I would never try a tester on!

If you have extra time on your hands to waste, I would recommend watching Zabrena on You Tube. She’s very fun to watch and does alot of lipstick videos. She even dupes more pricy brands/colors with drug-store options.

Thank you for that idea! My husband is taking my son to orientation and to settle in his dorm for his first semester at college–too many nights away for both of us to go, our other son will be in school. I will write a card and tell my husband to leave it somewhere where it will be found! (Knowing my husband, he may either just hand it to my son, or forget altogether–but it is worth it!)

I am curious as to how your son will respond to that! Mine is also heading off to college but he is 17 going on 30 with a ridiculously high IQ , is a National Merit Scholar and is extraordinaryly independent. My girls would have loved cards under their pillows but I don’t think he would go for it LOL ?

        • Oakland Fresca says:
          29 July 2019 at 6:19 pm

Hmm… I guess leaving a card–that tells him how proud I am of him, that says how sure I am that he can accomplish good and important things, and that reminds him that he can always count on me if things get tough–would be partially about me wanting to say that I love him one more way, partially about wanting to model the sort of parenting I hope he may do some day, and partially about leaving a surprise that is unexpected as much as it is kind.

At the risk of sounding mawkish, I am not sure how much IQ is related to hearing or saying ‘I love you.’

I suspect my son will find the card, read it, roll his eyes, and shove it to the back of his drawer. But maybe he will one day leave a similar note for someone else.

Wellllll…. He and I are finally getting around to teaching him how to drive, and he has patiently observed my lessons on roasting chicken, basic bolognese sauce, sauteing (however that word is spelled) kale and chard, making the perfect omelet, whipping cream, (Yes he will be on the college food plan for his whole first year and probably won’t enter a kitchen for the duration, but I got him so engaged he asked if he should pack a spatula and some sharp knives… I had to tell him, sadly, no 🙂 ) recording and filing expenses, balancing his check book . . . ummmm okaaayyy… (squeaky voice). He has been a doll. I am going to miss him so much. I am coping by teaching him how to cook!

      HI Madtown!
I would like to share my favorite nudes.
One is Naked Talent Sexy Mother Pucker from Soap and Glory its a exact dupe for one of Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipsticks. It does have a vanilla scent but it dissipates after a minute.

My other favorite nude is Cecile by Chanel Coco Rouge.

I am not sure of you skin tone and it you are cool or warm.
      Good luck!

I’m in Prada Infusions Fleur d’Oranger (sorry, no riddle. brain too slow) This one doesn’t seem to get mentioned much here but I really like it. It’s all about the Prada-ade with a kick of bitterness.

My Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire travel spray arrived over the weekend. Love! Thanks to those who pushed me along 🙂 It’s the bone-dry woody petitgrain (plus vetiver) fantasy I’ve had in my head for quite a while. Most of the reviews I read complained about the lack of longevity, which makes me wonder if it’s been reformulated. It is potent and near-nuclear on me. One spray shared between two wrists last night was still so powerful 10-12 hours later that it kinda woke me up this morning. LOL

Wow, 40 is just awful. A couple years ago we had 40 degree temps for about 2 months starting in June. Just sitting, I’d break a sweat.

I remember because my hubby had broken ribs and a collapsed lung so I had to take a couple weeks off work to stay home to help him. That temperature is just oppressive, and sadly we don’t have a/c.

Had a fun, but hot, day yesterday drumming at a Brazilian restaurant. I ate coxinhas for the 1st time, which are croquettes stuffed usually with chicken, but they had a bunch of creative stuffing combos- jerk beef, kielbasa and cheese, spinach/cheese were my faves.

Thanks! (See above re SOTD, but I used to own the Hanae Mori- loved it, but too sweet for me now).
The drumming is much more engaging in terms of playing with a group and we meet weekly to practice and play at a variety of events. I still play uke, but meetups are only once a month. And, yes, totally different beasts. I love both, though, and am proficient in neither ?

My sotd is based on a romantic affair lasting a single night, with bitter orange and orange blossom.

I finally got around to using up some of my neighbor’s gifts from his garden on Saturday. Besides refrigerator pickles I made two quiches, a big bowl of tuna salad and blueberry cobbler with lots of lemon. Midwest summer food, need to pick up some sweet corn and peaches. It’s been so long since I’ve cooked, I’m relieved to know I still can 🙂

Your perfume probably isn’t this one: https://www.naturesgardencandles.com/blog/one-night-stand-fragrance/
      but there it is.

Everything about your summer cooking sounds delicious! I am having a love affair with corn lately. So cheap, so easy to find, no need to go to a farmers market or high-end grocer to get a perfect cob! I like to shave it into a pan with butter and give it a quick saute (additions besides S&P optional.)

I’m doing Sledgehammer Week. Usually I don’t like loud scents but there are some I can’t resist. SOTD is by a prolific, pricey, and occasionally crass house, although this is one of their less expensive scents; the scent itself makes me think of those giant floral displays you find in big Hawaiian resorts.

I think I’m going to do a week of beach/tropics (thanks to the idea from pixel. Starting out in Beach Walk. I really enjoy it. I wish I’d sprayed a few more now (maybe 7, a la hajusuuri).

Had an amazingly relaxing weekend only to walk into a nightmare of a Monday at work. It’s going to be a crazy week. I’ve finished updating my resume thought and am going to start applying to jobs in CA. My hubs told me to take my time but I feel an internal pressure to hurry and find something.

That stuff is potent! I had a sample of it wrapped inside a plastic bag in my perfume drawer for ages, and it was the only thing I could smell when the drawer was opened.

The blackberry is spot-on. Minus the pine it’d have been the blackberry perfume of my dreams…

I don’t have the creativity today to come up with clue(s). Started in Scorza di Sicilia, which I later topped with Mugler Cologne. Sharp citrus.

In continuing saga of battles with Chase bank, I had called them on July 17 to transfer out the final $5 in the account and close it. Person on the phone said it would close as soon as that $5 was out and account hit zero. I look today and see that a week later, a credit of 3 cents hit. I call. “Oh, you can’t close a trust account over the phone…you have to go to a branch.” I complained that I was assured on a prior call it would be closed. As she apologized, I just hung up. I wasn’t mad at her…I’m just tired of their bad training.

Is yours vintage or new? I loved it on the preppy girls at my high school but never had a bottle.

I bought a mini (cologne version – maybe that was the flaw) a few years back and it was missing the pineapple note that I loved. It smelled mainly of muguet.

Yes, mine is a cologne too, I think it’s the common concentration for Lauren, it’s a vintage bottle in its box which lists only perfume, water. I really enjoy it and it is not very sweet, bright rather and yes a little fruity.

Lauren is a blast from my past! I wore it in high school but I was far from preppy as I attended High School of Performing Arts. Such a beautiful scent, Aurora!

I loved and wore Lauren. It was a while before I realized I wasn’t the target audience. The only RL I ever really got along with.

🙂 the essence of a pretty scent, I also like vintage Safari for the beautiful galbanum.

Lauren! That’s such a great scent; you smell fantastic. I went through a couple bottles back in the day but I’m definitely not preppy!

I got a teeny bottle of the current version in a set from duty free about a year ago; it was such a disappointment.

Thank you Gail. It’s really affordable on ebay here in the UK I paid around £20 for 59ml, and the scent is intact so keep an eye on listings.

Home now so am doused in Chamade. I think I will do 2 Guerlain per day so that next week I can move on to Auphorie for the week and then Dior the following week.

    “What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?” ?

Comcast, your cable TV service sucks today.

SOTD = SJP Covet, from the sample stash. Too hot and too Monday for riddles.

We have Comcast for internet which is equally as suck-y…. sadly, it’s a monopoly so that is all we can get!

Funny thing is, we also have Comcast for Internet and have NO problems with it. When we were having Internet issues, it was due to having an ancient router. Once we replaced that, everything was fine.

It constantly goes down…. and then you will see the Comcast maintenance trucks driving up and down the road LOL ?. If they had to reimburse us for lack of service perhaps service might improve.

I guess I need to start posting my SOTD before I start reading through other posts and get distracted.
So…SOTD was Rose Ikebana. Two sprays before gym training this morning, then added eight more sprays over the course of the day. Pretty sure I smell good. ?

“Unsettled” is definitely a sandalwood scent, but I also got a strong note of pineapple in it. So if fruit notes are not your thing, be advised. ?

Thanks for the heads up.It was beautiful sandalwood on the person who was wearing it but I do wonder whether that fruit note will amp up on my skin.

Hey andshewaz! I wore E&J bourbon and I agree that longevity is poor! 4 spritzes and I can barely smell it after < 2 hours.

On lipstick day, I remember when I bought my very first L’Oréal lipstick. This was back in the 80s-and I loved how the lipstick smelled. Ambre Mythique from a new bottle. It’s a very dry perfume. I also discovered a new to me flower, the Stock. It’s very pretty, comes in pastel colors, pinks yellows…
and the scent is similar to clove.
