Wednesday scent of the day 6/5

Posted by Robin on 5 June 2019 168 Comments

Hey, it's Hump Day! Also, World Environment Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm getting points in Ineke Idyllwild.

Reminder: on 6/7, wear a fragrance by Ineke, Imaginary Authors, il Profumo or i Profumi di Firenze, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter I.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Ahh thank you! Doing a search just now I see it’s at Beautyhabit and Saks. I’ve been basing my search on Luckyscent. I think Beautyhabit still does a sample program, so I will look into it there.

Barqs’s comment reminded me that I actually did get the sample direct from L’Artisan website. Looks like you found some other sources, too, though!

Hope you like it. A little too fleeting for me.

    • Barqs says:

A few months ago, L’Artisan was offering to send two free perfume samples via their online store/website. Mont de Narcisse was one of the samples I chose. I received MdN sample and loved it immediately, but kept sampling it. Eventually I bought a full bottle.

The other scent sample I ordered was Bucoliques de Provence, which I also loved. I had to decide between the two of these though. Maybe I’ll buy BdP another time, because it is also a very beautiful scent.

Sleepy again! I can never get myself to bed on time, night time is just so much more fun than daytime.

I’m wearing Devin in the vintage version, which is stronger for sure than the modern one, but also doesn’t project as much so I’m torn… which probably means I must simply wear both next time.

Quarter points in eau d’Italie Paestum Rose.

Today is going to be an awful day at work, almost entirely devoted to organization. In grad school/undergrad, we would have a labwide cleanup twice a year, but I thought I had left that behind when I left the world of academia. Sigh.

Tomorrow I head out to Boston for my 10-year college reunion + seeing my parents in MD!

I use either Joico Color Endure (red bottle) or Joico Moisture Recovery (blue bottle). It probably sounds gross, but I wash my hair once a week, and the other washes are done using conditioner and wetting the hair down really well.
Between swimming in a chlorinated pool, menopause and being 75% gray, my hair is pretty dry but I’m not ready to go natural/gray just yet! 😀
For a leave-in conditioner, I love Cantu Coconut Curling Cream, which you can purchase at Target for $6. For styling, I make my own spray in shine spray, I put 30% glycerin, 60% water and 10% aloe gel in a spray bottle and spritz for conditioning and shine.
For a make your own hair gel, I use, 2 cups of water, 2.5 tablespoons Flax Seeds, Πcup Aloe Vera Juice, 1 teaspoon Grape Seed Oil, 2 capsules Vitamin E Oil (preservative).

Soak the Flax Seeds in the water for an hour or two, gently boil for 10 minutes. The texture/thickness should be like egg whites and a little “slimy” I strain the gel and add the Aloe Vera Juice, Grape Seed Oil and Vitamin E. I put it in a spray bottle and keep it in the fridge so it lasts longer.

Sampling Hiram Green’s Lustre. I love the smell of natural rose absolutes but most rose-centric perfumes turn sour on my skin. I have the feeling that this one won’t, and the quality of the rose oil he used is absolutely stunning. That being said, right now it’s quite simply smelling like a rose soliflore (albeit gorgeous as such) and I’m not sure if it will develop into anything more as it wears. I’ll update later.

I’m in a bit of a midweek slump mostly due to a headache caused by allergies and shoulder/neck pain. I’ll take some Advil after I finish my breakfast and use my heated neck pillow. I’m sure I look goofy with it on at work, but I don’t care.

Random recommend from a stranger, that may or may not be relevant to your neck situation: I swear by a millet (or, alternately, buckwheat) pillow. Eliminated pain I was having from sleeping. It will support your neck without collapsing or propping your head up at a weird angle… Have slept with one exclusively for nearly 10 years.

MissGoldsmith, I saw your comments in yesterday’s SOTD post earlier this afternoon about Ineke. I think, but am not sure, that I tried A – E, and maybe liked Chemical Bonding. But that was several years ago, and I don’t trust my memory on that. And I didn’t take any notes at that time.

Got in the elevator this morning to head to dentist and a woman in there seemed to be wearing a quite lovely, somewhat (to me) fresh scent. I didn’t comment. We both headed out and saw the bits of rain coming down, so we headed back to the elevator to get our respective umbrellas. This time I asked. She said it was Thierry Mugler. I don’t know Mugler we’ll eniugh to realize the follow up should have been, “which one?” Any thoughts?

Of course it reminded me I was commando, so I did some spritzes if OJ Champaca. I smelled good at the dentist. (Who told me things looked fine…yay!)

The only “fresh” Mugler scent I can think of off the top of my head is Mugler Cologne, which is neroli-citrus-white musk, and it is heavenly.

On second thought, Mugler recently came out with a whole line of flankers for the cologne that I haven’t smelled yet. Could also have been one of those.

Gave FM’s Promise another test run last night, and it is still going strong mid-day the next day. Still unable to think intelligently enough to write for work, so am spending the day getting the house ready for the relatives arriving on Fri for my son’s high school graduation (I just wrote ‘wedding’ instead of ‘graduation’–shows my level of stress!! Okay, fixed that.)

On the horizon: My hyper-judgy in-laws, plus my extremely opinionated aunt, plus my parents and their new spouses meeting for the first time…. plus hot weather and little parking … My high school graduation was such a non-event that my parents, who were probably fighting, left quickly. I called them from a payphone to tell them my friend from school had invited me out to dinner (Spenger’s for anyone from around here back in the day!) with her family, so I’d be home late.

My post-shower perfume plan for the moment is Azemour Les Orangers.

Ugh. So sorry about the impending family drama! My family is a challenge, too, and it makes most celebrations fraught, or at least carrying the potential to be fraught. Much harder to properly celebrate that way. I hope it goes more smoothly than anticipated!

Fragrance has been one of my coping mechanisms in such situations–take a furtive sniff of my wrist when things get nuts, and it helps ground me.

I had an awkward “divorced parents” situation at my cousin’s wedding on Sunday: someone thought it would be a good idea to seat me, my parents and their spouses at the same table. Alone. Yeah, it’s been 40 years since the split, my step-dad’s been around for 40, step-mom for 20, they don’t spit daggers at each other and can remain civil. But would they be each other’s choice for dinner conversation? Heck no.

I am feeling an urge to chop my hair off today. I suspect it is boredom from all of this sitting around the house, although I felt this urge last summer, too. . . Thing is, I am not feminine enough to enjoy doing my hair, so I have kept it long because it is the lowest maintenance. I can cut it three times a year and not look sloppy. I can put it back in a pony tail and be done. But I’d look cute in a pixie cut. I did it back in college for a while. But then, I’m back to a hair cut every 6 weeks. And gel is usually required to keep it cute and under control. Ugh.

SOTD is Au Dela. I really like the sharp weirdness of narcissus. I miss the old formulation of SSS Nostalgie which had it front and center in the top notes.

I’m the opposite of you, at the middle stage of growing my hair out after years of pixie cuts which I love, but yes they are high-maintenance and expensive. My now-gray hair is sort of frizzy and it’s thick and not yet long enough for a pony tail so I’m just trying to last another month or two of summer heat and humidity without dashing into the salon to have it cut off. I wish you strength. Sometimes changes are good though and it might be a pick-me-up for you after your recent surgery and long recovery.

Yes, the prospect of growing it out again, if I decide it was the wrong decision, is definitely part of the hairstyle math! I know that feeling of just wanting it off the back of your neck–those in-between lengths are really a bother that way. I remember wearing a lot of scarves as headbands last time I grew my hair out, trying to sweep the little hairs up and away from my face.

If you want to keep the length for ease of styling, but also want some weight off the back of your neck, maybe you’d like a style that is undercut at the nape? It’s a bit edgy, but I love the look! Some examples: https://www.google.com/search?q=undercut+nape&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjmsMC3j9PiAhUBa60KHcv9CakQ_AUIECgB&biw=1578&bih=873&dpr=2

I’ve been having the same hair thought and actually have an appt tomorrow. But totally identify with everything you said about short hair, which I used to have in my 20s-early 30s. It was a pain and growing it out was like the awkwardness of puberty all over again.
Anyway, I’ll probably only take off 2 inches, lol.

It’s been quite a few years since I have had short hair, but I totally understand the urge to hack it all off at some point. Getting cuts every 4 to 6 weeks sure puts a damper on things, though. Good luck with whatever you decide for hair options.

Still failing to adapt to winter here. I am a morning oerson so get up between 4.30 and 5 which is good for star gazing, I guess but dog walking on the hill around 7.30 is becoming a farce as my dog insists I throw pinecones and all that happens is that they bounce off into the undergrowth and the dog can’t see them as its pretty much pitch black and I end up on my hands and knees in the gorse bushes while being barked at. Yesterday it was so cold and windy the forest smelt of fresh fish and it only slowly dawned on me that the huge southerly was blowing the smell of the sea up the hill…jeez it was cold. My walk ended with me lugging a dumped supermarket trolley up the final part of the track…it was all very wuthering heights for the 21st century. Wearing Aqaba (Gaynor , thanks) ,

My SOTD is I Profumi di Firenze Catarina de’ Medici and I love it. It’s such a great fresh floral citrus peach blend. For us in our hot humid climate it makes a wonderful summer perfume–I should wear it more often. I was surprised today to notice a similarity to HdP 1873 (Colette); and yes, it turns out they DO have somewhat similar compositions with orange, peach, and lily-of-the valley. I don’t really get much of the iris from Catarina, though others describe that as the dominant note in it. We’ve just been through another “Rain Event” in Houston with flash flood warnings; so far so good right here, and I even saw a patch of blue sky, so perhaps this will pass, though it’s still awfully gloomy out.

    SOTD = Aftelier Alchemy

    I = Indie

Mandy posted the most gorgeous silver watch case on IG yesterday. It’s for her personal use.

Some things I assumed to be the case but was proven to be wrong: after leaving Vatican City, we decided to walk around the little streets and lo and behold, there were priest haberdasheries! I always thought that priests’ garments were supplied by the church (not an allowance) and there’s a storage room full of clothes in various sizes; special garments are handed down from generation to generation. That said, there was one shop that was next to a barbershop that was next to a bar. I feel like I’ve heard a joke about that some time in the past!

Olive trees only bear fruit every 2 years!

I don’t think I’ve ever given it any thought, but I suppose it makes sense that priests would need to have a source for their “work uniforms,” just like the rest of us. Good for you for going exploring off the beaten path! My favorite parts of Rome (the city, not the monuments) were far away from the tourist paths.

I love olive trees! That is my profile picture–olives in California. I tried to root a couple stems to bring back north with me, but no luck.

Priest haberdasheries! It makes sense when one thinks about it… after all, auto mechanics have their uniforms supplied by somebody. But that (the priestly garments) sounds much more charming.

I spotted an Elissa-rabbit near my ‘Leda’ rose, and said, “Shoo!” The ‘Leda’ rose is what seems to be the U.S. version of white and red. There’s a pink and red variety, too, from what I understand.
