It's Friday and Walt Whitman’s birthday. It's also World No Tobacco Day, and our community project for today is to compensate by wearing something smoky (it doesn't have to smell like tobacco in particular).
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm doing full-on smoky tobacco, but lightly, with a tiny, out-of-season dab of Kerosene Broken Theories.
Reminder: on 6/7, wear a fragrance by Ineke, Imaginary Authors, il Profumo or i Profumi di Firenze, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter I.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It was a choice between Odori Tabacco and Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque, and I went with the Lutens, which is more complicated and interesting. Tobacco, yes, but also a bit of smoke, a bit of leather, a bit of honeyed baklava, and a bouquet of roses: an entire shisha bar in a bottle. It’s stunning.
I really must try Fumerie Turque. Sounds amazing!
My bottle is about 12 years old: I don’t know what the current reformulation smells like, but I hope it’s as good.
It’s good. very good.
My husband wears that one, I love it.
Ah, Robin, you smell great – love Broken Theories! I myself am defying “no tobacco” day in Tabac Blond. Take THAT, universe (or whoever declared World No Tobacco Day). 🙂
Excellent choice!
Good one
Not in the mood for any tobacco or smoky scent today. Instead, I bathed myself in SL A la Nuit. After 4 hours I can still smell it on skin and clothes. That’s a miracle! One more wear and my full bottle will be gone. A la Nuit is my favorite jasmine perfume, but not sure if I will replace it. Too fleeting!
You smell great!
Thank you!
That scent is so perfect for this time of year! You smell mah-velous!
Thank you! It is perfect for this warm, sunny, beautiful spring day!
This one lingers on me…love it!
Nice it lasts on you! It is very fleeting on me. I sprayed heavily on it, but it is almost gone now.
Me too, luckily 🙂
I recently found my misplaced sample of A la Nuit. It was hiding in plain sight (of course).
It is beautiful! I hope it lasts more on you, on me it disappears very, very fast!
I don’t recall having longevity issues with A la Nuit whenever I wore it.
Tabac Blond extrait Caron
Wowza, Bear, you smell Absolutely fantastic!
You are twins with SheriG 🙂
And SheriG is honored to be scent twins with Sir Bear.
ELDO Jasmin et Cigarette. I have never smoked, but I find this scent very appealing.
Wearing this scent I suddenly thought of Cigarette chorus in Carmen (link to Youtube video below).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2dh5hiejTk
Thank you so much for the link. Honestly, I always learn something new here at NST!
Thank you for watching.
I feel the same about NST. 🙂
Ahh Jasmin et Cigarettes is a great choice for today. That one is fairly light on me, so it would have been more office friendly than my Anubis.
Yep, I think Jasmin et Cigarettes is fine for office and warm weather.
Scent twins! I’m pretty sure this is the only really tobacco-y scent in my sample collection so I went on a hunt this morning.
Great to see other people wearing it. Apparently there are three of us in J&C today!
Joining you in Jasmin et Cigarette; I really like the smoky edge of this one. We smell great!
Yes, we do!
We were twins today!
Nice. There are now four of us. 🙂
La Fumee, Miller Harris, for a literal interpretation of todays brief. 🙂
Nice! Love that one.
There are a lot from this house that I enjoy, but La Fumee was my first–you smell fantastic!
I’m wearing Replica By the Fireplace today, and am not sure if I’m complying with the CP or not, since it’s really more sweet than smoky.
Got to work about an hour earlier than usual, which means I’m dreadfully sleepy. At least it’s very quiet!
Hey, is the website misbehaving deeply for anyone else? I can’t see what I’m typing, so I (a) don’t know if this will post at all, and (b) don’t know if I have any typos.
No trouble here, but you must be a REALLY good typist to have done all that classy punctuating in the dark!
Hehe. I’ve been typing since I was like 4, so lots of practice 🙂
In any case, turned out to be just my browser! A restart fixed things.
Weird. Have not had any other complaints so far…
Yep, as I told Regina above, it was my browser!
I’d say it’s smoky enough. You smell nice.
The website is working fine for me today.
I can see what I’m typing but got an error report when commenting on the daily lemming post that I’ve never gotten before. I figured that issue was on my end though
That is the stupid spam filter. Fixed now.
Late to seeing this, but thank you Robin!
I was considering By The Fireplace for today, so we were almost scent twins…
I couldn’t do smoke today, too allergeezy. Instead I am wearing Dior-Dior, and hope it is cool if I go on at length about the ebay miracle which brought it to me, because who else in this world would understand? So I found a listing of two mini EdT splashes, Dior-Dior and Diorella, that went super cheaply. I think no one spotted it because the person didn’t name the perfumes or even the brand in the listing, but just called them “vintage perfume samples.” So I opened the package last night and guys… there was also parfum! Just one of those teeny tiny pebble bottles with a few ml, but Dior-Dior parfum that hadn’t even been pictured or mentioned in the listing. Oh, ebay seller, your ignorance is my bliss…
Dior-Dior is INSANELY good. I wondered how something so amazing, this rich, voluminous floral chypre, could have fallen out of the cultural memory, and I decided that it was just too much like too many other perfumes from the same era: fruity top note, big floral middle, sexy chypre base, which could describe an awful lot of scents. It just got lost in the noise, I think. What a shame, and how lucky you are to have gotten some.
oh! that is fabulous ebay luck. What a treasure!
Lucky you, enjoy!
Nice find!!! This reminds me of when I went on a hunt for vintage Miss Dior parfum, and I found one of those lovely little 7mL parfum dabbers PLUS dabbers of vintage extrait Safari and Dune and something else, all for $25! Not even up for auction, just…for sale. At the time, everyone else was selling the Miss Dior parfum dabbers alone for > $50. The names of the perfumes weren’t even properly listed, and nowhere did it say that these were the extraits de parfum. Anyway it was probably my most exciting eBay find, and I was sure the seller didn’t know what he had. Probably cleaning out his grandmother’s closet or something.
Oh good for you!!! (Sorry about the allergies though. My son is likewise suffering terribly this week.)
Wow! How lucky!
Very nice eBay find!
No participating today in the CP. Its too hot here to do smokey or anything of that sort..
I went for a jog this morning and totally bit it. My knees is in need of an extra large bandaid. Good Grief!
Non perfume related question, has anyone used Kiko milano makeup? One of my friends was raving about their eye shadow sticks and it looked really beautiful on her.
I’ve tried the Kiko eyeshadow sticks — they come in great colors but they do crease on me, just a warning if you have creasey lids!
I do!!!
Thanks for the FYI!
The color selection isn’t as good but they’re a bargain and not so creasey — the Catrice eyeshadow sticks!
Have you tried the Glossier eye shadows? Very muted colors, but buildable and no creasing.
no, thanks for the recommendation
Ouch, sorry!
Good for you re: jobbing, but ouch on your poor knee! Take care of that boo boo!
I love and use Kiko cosmetics eye shadow sticks, they are very similar to Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier at 1/3 the price. And once applied, they don’t budge.
Kiko’s shadow stick in 05 is an exact dupe (rose/taupe) for Amethyst in Laura Mercier’s Caviar stick.
The kids think my bloody knee is the best thing they ever saw…
Thanks for your feedback, did you find they creased?
Nope, no creasing at all and they were true to color also. They lasted all day until I removed them with my Hada Labo makeup remover. Amazon link is below.

I’m in AG Vanille Exquise, a lightly smoky vanilla that works well in the heat. I’m planning to switch to Shalimar (also a bit smoky) before heading out to dinner this evening.
Oh, good call!
The only noticeably smoky thing I have is probably Volutes in the edp, which I can’t bear, due to it going incredibly sweet on my skin. Other items that came to mind (and hand/nose) were St. Clair Scents Frost and First Cut. Frost has a smoke note and First Cut has tobacco, and they are great. I got the sample set in order to try First Cut (because I was chasing hay), but I **think** that I might love Frost just a little bit more. Once I got the sample set, the ensuing either-or/which-one-should-I-buy loop ground to a halt with no decision made. Commitment issues! Saves money!
Scent of the day: Jour d’Hermes.
I liked Frost best as well.
I was the same – most interested to try First Cut but actually like Frost best by just a smidge.
I am having a very trying morning, so I grabbed my bottle of Estee Lauder Modern Muse, and applied. I needed something comforting. My tea is Fujian Autumn Oolong.
Sorry Barqs, hope the day improves! Your tea sounds lovely.
I’m wearing All Good Things from Lush, which is kind of a distant relative of Pink Sugar, but much weirder. It changes a lot but right now it smells like grilled ham and pineapple kabobs.
Is it weird that I got a little hungry after reading this?
🙂
Not weird at all. lol
Twins! I have lots of incense perfumes, but this is my only “SMOKE” one. I like it, it reminds me of campfires and toasty marshmallows. For me it feels youthful.
Yes! a summer camp scent.
You smell *interesting*, Elisa! I like that one but it really is weird.
It is so weird! I’ve got a sample and I don’t need more but it’s not boring.
I bought All Good Things in the solid earlier this month, and the Lush solids do tend to flatten out the scent, but it’s still super weird, isn’t it? I haven’t smelled grilled ham (though it wouldn’t surprise me — Breath of God smells like smoked fish), but it does have a pineappley quality that I love.
My Breath of God solid is good but my Imogen Rose solid REALLY loses a lot compared with the liquid version.
I think more so with Lush than other brands. Solids never have as much lift as alcohol-based, but Lush’s seem particularly flat.
I’m going for double CP points with Purple Love Smoke (smoky notes, plus smoke in the name).
Calypso, if you log in today, can you send me your deets via email? I’ve got some samples with your name on them over here (the Calligraphy series we discussed a while back)….you can reach me at lisadarty in the land of the haute may-all.
Thanks, I will!
Purple Love Smoke is one of my favorites from Soivohle.
DSH Slinky Carnation – – I know I asked for a little bit of smokiness but I can’t remember if it’s from birch tar or cade. Definitely no tobacco.
I was meaning to wear Hiram Green Hyde or Chris Rusak’s Io for the smoky wonderfulness… but I’ve been completely drawn into exploring the new Progressive Botany scents from Jorum Studios all week and got distracted. Euan McCall, the Edinburgh perfumer behind Neandertal Dark, the Kingdom Scotland scents, and all sorts of other goodness has launched his own brand. Trimerous is the sort of new twist on orris that leads to obsession, Carduus is an intriguingly jaggedy herbal witch’s brew, and Arborist a portrait of Scottish woodland (I seem to be anosmic to something major in this, so it’s very quiet on me, which is maddening because it’s lovely, and has a glorious golden patch in the middle of its afternoon.) Three more still to try, but I can’t bear to do the quick sniff and move on… a brief test keeps turning into multiple-day wears. Innovative as anything I’ve worn, but not hard-to-wear weird.
Those sound very interesting! I love smelling local things, particular to a place. Someday I will make it to Scotland.
They are. I think they are something pretty special. And the fact that he’s local gives me a real kick. (If you ever make it over here, give me a shout!)
Ooh, sold.
I was very reckless, blind buying the set of six 15ml bottles… and do not regret it in the slightest. It’s exciting stuff.
Very interesting, always good to hear about UK perfumers. It is grey and dreich in Edinburgh today so have dug out SSS Winter Woods, don’t own much smoke or incense.
isn’t it a rotten day? hi fellow Edinburger, you smell good 🙂
Those sound fantastic.
They really are! I’m hoping they can get out into the wider world beyond the silly UK postal restrictions soon so more people can experience them.
Hello there! Nice to hear from you crikey!
Hi Jalapeno! Long time no NST 🙂
These sound quite wonderful. Thanks for letting us know about them!
I’ve been thinking about Scotland lately, maybe due to a small fair-isle knitting project with shetland yarn but more likely because I’ve been reading Mairi Hedderwick’s Katie Morag books to my young granddaughters. I really think I need to smell these perfumes. I wonder if they are available anywhere in the US?
Oh, that knitting project sounds cool. Some of those patterns are beautiful.
I checked with Euan: he’s hoping to talk to some US stores soon. But these are still brand new, just launched two weeks ago. Sending out from the UK is ridiculously difficult on a bottle-by-bottle level. It must be so frustrating for British indie perfumers.
Day 2 of The Body Shop Red Musk. Wearing a skirt today so I spritzed behind my knees. Doing that always makes me feel a little flirty 🙂
Mentally preparing myself for a 5K tomorrow morning in which I will likely be rained upon. Send me all your driest, sunniest thoughts!
Wishing you a cool sunny day!
Good luck tomorrow!
Go holyneroli!! Stay dry!
Wishing you dry weather and a good run!
Parfumerie Generale Bois Blond. One of the first niche fragrances I fell in love with, though ironically, did not buy a bottle in time. I still love its hay/amber/musk/bit of tobacco sweetish drydown. Happy Friday, all!
Did that one get axed? (Sorry, I just can’t keep track.)
It was always limited edition and I can’t find it online anymore.
Happy Friday all! My SOTD is Sonoma Scent Studio’s Fireside Intense, with notes of woods, smoke, oakmoss and ambergris. I am so glad it’s Friday. 🙂
SSS is much missed, enjoying Winter Woods today, as it is not summer yet here in UK.
Hi, twin!
Hello back, twin!
You smell fabulous! Wish I still had some of that left.
Yum!
Scent triplets!
Happy Friday! I’m wearing the misleadingly named Papillon Tobacco Rose, which actually contains no tobacco.
Oh, good one!
You smell fab and still tobacco-adjacent.
I’m surprised that I am the first to mention Habanita as my cp scent. I rarely wear it but it is gorgeous. I swapped away my bottle but kinda wish that I held onto it. Happy weekend!
If it were winter I’d be wearing this one, but on a humid day that’s supposed to be in the 80’s today, the powder in this would suffocate me. I have it in extrait form, a bottIe I treasure as a souvenir of my one and only trip to France. Love this one!
You smell wonderful, i would have picked it but it’s a winter scent for me.
It’s a winter scent for me as well. I only have a dabber sample and used it very lightly. It’s warm and humid here today too.
There’s a few bottles I wish I had kept during my last clear out, too.
You smell great Petunia!
TGIF! Friday, I am very happy to see you. I’m wearing my favorite tobacco scent, La Via del Profumo / AbdesSalaam Attar / whatever he’s calling himself these days Tabac. Straight up tobacco leaves, not sweet.
Waiting for the power company to shut the power off, AGAIN. They are supposedly replacing power poles in my area. Got the generator hooked & ready to go.
That sounds like a drag. I hope they get the job done quickly.
So jealous that you have a generator, I want one. Although really we don’t lose power as often as we used to.
Wearing 3 small sprays, one to each arm and the chest, of the insanely gorgeous Anubis. It’s right on the border of too much for work, but it’s worth the risk. Tonight I’ll either reapply it or switch to Mona di Orio Oud, another gorgeous, rich, smoky perfume. It’s probably my favorite oud, and I’m not really that into oud in general.
I’m seriously dragging today. Stayed up late watching The Crown and waiting for my boyfriend to get home from a concert. I took a melatonin later than usual so I’m feeling a bit dizzy from sleepiness today. At least it’s Friday!
Hope you made it through the day and get a good night’s sleep!
Thanks, I did both!
Finished a decant of Avignon today. Well, I have a couple drops left in the decant but have another one one the way. Aligning is slowly becoming full bottle worthy for me but I wish the CdG incense line lasts longer on skin.
And I wish they came in 15 ml 😉
I am in Slumberhouse Kiste today. I just put a little bit on, as it can be strong.
Joining the community project by wearing Encens Jinhae from Atelier Cologne.
I forgot that I had Atelier Cologne samples that had incense as a note! I swapped the lotions and soaps and larger sizes of the colognes away, but kept the samples that were in the Advent Calendar package. I need to try more of those samples this week so I can put some in my giveaway pile for the freebiemeet. Remind me, folks! Iris Rebelle is definitely going into the giveaway pile, plus most likely at least some of the ones that made Dad cough.
I spent yesterday and today sorting out perfume samples. I switched from labeling bags with where I got them from to sorting them by perfume house. I ended up having two samples of MFK A la Rose, plus a few more duplicates. I think other duplicates include a few L’Artisan and Serge Lutens samples, and possibly a Diptyque sample or two. I’m not sure why I thought I needed 5 ml of the reissue of Jolie Madame. I suspect it was on sale cheap in a 5 ml vial sale. The Pacifica fragrances were definitely worth getting 5 ml of, but some of the other perfumes in those 5 ml sales, not so much as far as I’m concerned.
I’ll keep you NST folks posted.
Scent of the Day so far: Demeter Fireplace.
And reminded by Lucasai’s comment, in the evening I dabbed on some Vanille Insensee. Which may mean “Angry Vanilla” as far as I know. (lol) I guess that the Atelier Cologne Advent Calendar didn’t have Iris Rebelle as one of the samples, or I lost it or already gave it away. But I think it was that it had one particular set of fragrances that were mostly based around various citrus fruits. I got the camellia and jasmine samples separately later on, and will try them, too.
I don’t like smelling like smoke, so not participating in the CP today. After my shower, I plan on wearing a spritz of something light and flowery, like Vepres Sicilliannes.
It’s Hood strawberry season in Oregon, and I’m trying to decide if I can handle picking strawberries for a little while today. Leaning over doesn’t feel good, but maybe I could just get dirty and crawl around on my hands and knees? We only get 10 days or so with these gems of the berry world, and I look forward to gorging myself on them every year. Besides, all that Vitamin C is good for healing. ?
Be careful not to overdo. Can you beg or borrow some neighbor kid who would enjoy a berry-picking outing?
Maybe Mr. Spicebomb could help in your quest for Hood strawberries? ?
Happy Friday!
Am in the decidedly non smoky Cap Neroli- it’s gonna be 81F (27C) so that a more smoky scent would have been too much.
A quick trip to Multnomah Falls is on the agenda, as well as Farmers Market!
Oh, report back on the fire recovery up there! I haven’t been out to the Gorge in a few years, and I’m afraid I’ll cry when I finally do. . .
I absolutely will! *hugs*
Cap Néroli is pure happiness in a bottle!
I truly do love it; it’s my scent for the summer and am so glad I read about here so I could buy it!
Happy Friday everyone! I’m wearing Smell Bent Smoked Ambergris today from a sample I’ve dipped into a couple times already. I like it, but I feel like the time and place to smell like a campfire is pretty limited.
Anyone here in Austin? I’ve never been, but I spent a large chunk of yesterday debating whether I can afford to go to Fantastic Fest this year for my birthday after many years of wanting to. It’s cheap by film festival standards…maybe if I just do the back half? I feel like I’m gonna be daydreaming until I do it.
I think you should do it! The loner you wait, the higher chance is that it’ll change, and when you finally decide to do it, it won’t be what you expected to be based on what you knew about it from the “better” years. It’s like buying Miss Dior today after reading all the reviews about the original one and not knowing that its name was given away to a completely different perfume.
I agree with Undina. If you have the chance to go to Fantastic Fest this year, do so. “Shoulda, woulda, coulda” is a phrase full of regret.
I am trying two more from Bon Parfumeur today…
103 tiare flower jasmine hibiscus
201 green apple lily-of-the-valley pear
These are the main notes but not inclusive. They list all notes on their website. 103 has vanilla in the base but I’m not getting it yet.
I used to enjoy pure florals more but in the past few years it seems to be less and less. Unless they have an oriental, vanilla or spicy base I don’t have much interest in true florals now. Many florals and fruity florals either seem detergent-like or just meh to my nose.
That’s exactly the way I feel about florals. ?
I used to feel that way about florals but Ilike them so much more now.
No perfume on yet, and no doubt whatever it will be will not be smoky. Just not up for smoke or tobacco this week… I do have a light application of Diptyque Voile Satin on my hands and hair, but commenting because I love that photo from Robin. I had an internship in the Appalachia in college one summer, and I saw several of those barns. I completely forgot about them until I noticed the photo on NST. Boy does that bring me back to that sticky hot summer, and the eternal sound of crickets.
Hey, there is a whole pinterest page on Mail Pouch barns!
(Actually there is more than one, but here is a start)
https://www.pinterest.com/saundersaul/americana-mail-pouch-tobacco-barns/
It’s Pierre Guillaume Louanges Profanes this morning, a new discovery for me although it was released in 2008. Notes are neroli, lily, hawthorn, benzoin, incense, and woods. I snapped up an inexpensive bottle on the bay.
I’m doing Square Foot gardening this year and got a watering system that I’m hoping will prevent the dreaded tomato blossom end rot. I have to hook it up and test it this morning. I’ve crammed quite a lot of plants into my 4×4 plot.
I belonged to an organic gardening club in college, and we used the square foot method too. Made it very easy to diagram out our limited space and remember which things were planted where from year to year.
How do you like LP? I’ve thought about getting a sample, because the notes sound amazing, but Luca Turin’s review made me think it might be grape candy to my nose, like Seville a l’Aube.
I totally get the grape aspect of Seville, and I don’t think LP is similar to it at all. LP is a rich orange blossom with incense, woods, and amber. I’d recommend giving it a try.
Thank you. It’s at the top of my list now.
Ahh, so you bought the bottle I’d been watching for a while on eBay! I’m glad it was a fellow NSTer. I think LP is great. It reminds me of the discontinued L’Occitane Neroli, and I love the hawthorne note.
I’m celebrating World No Tobacco Day today as I don’t use tobacco in any form and won’t be wearing it either since tobacco is one of my most disliked notes. I learned my lesson after I was so excited to try Tauer’s PHI Une Rose de Kandahar after all the raves and was extremely disappointed when all I could smell was tobacco intensified. Similar experiences with any scent having a tobacco note has me avoiding any of those. Lucky those of you who can enjoy these!
But I do love smoky fragrances and, in lieu of thus-far-no-weekend-camping-trips due to rain, rain, and more rain, I am taking a faux camping trip today, and joining SmokyToes, in SSS Fireside Intense. Love this one! Hmm . . . maybe I’ll even make some S’Mores later.
We’re in for a couple of dry days this weekend. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pull some weeds out of the muck that is my garden. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!
You hate the smell of tobacco, but have you ever smelled tobacco-flower, aka nicotiana? My mom used to grow it and it is heaven, a night-scented flower that just radiates this thick, voluptuous, jasminey perfume. I have to assume it can’t be captured and bottled because you rarely if ever see it as a note but oh it is so good.
Oh., yes, I adore nicotiana and have grown it in my night-scented garden for many years. The old-fashioned white ones, grown from seed that I planted more than 20 years ago, self-seed every year and grow more abundant each year as they transplant easily to other parts of the garden when they first appear as tiny little green bows in the dirt in May. Yes, their fragrance on a warm summer night is absolutely hypnotic but they have absolutely no scent in the daytime! And the nicotiana plants you can sometimes find at garden centers don’t compare at all. Only the old-fashioned ones grown from seed – plant them once for a lifetime of fragrance! Hope you get to smell them again – i’d be happy to send you some seeds in the fall.
My father plants the old-type nicotiana in his garden. It is a wonderful fragrance. Thank you for the reminder of it!
I got all tobacco all the time with Andy Tauer’s PHI, too. Not a single bit of rose to be had on me. ?
A little warm for it, but I am starting next week’s CP in a small spritz of Ineke’s Field Notes from Paris–very tobacco-y on me and I love it.
Just got my fridge repaired (was leaking) and it did not cost a fortune! Yeah…I always hold my breath with the repair guys show up!
Have a great weekend everybody–hope the weather cooperates wherever you are.
Hurray for an appliance repair that did not cost an arm and a leg! ?
Yum, you smell great jepster!
I’m wearing Eau du Fier by Goutal, smoke, tea and apricots. It sounds like a hot mess, but it is one of the most memorable scents they ever did.
I’ve been enjoying this CP a lot, as I often tend to wear floral perfumes and this week had me exploring my leather scents a bit more.
I couldn’t decide if Eau de Fier was horrifying or hypnotic but I kind of think it’s both. I couldn’t imagine owning a whole bottle but it was so interesting to wear it a few times.
It’s on the hypnotic side for me, but I can see that some people might find it horrifying. It’s a very bold scent. Amazing, considering the fact that Doyen also created Petite Chérie and Des Lys.
I liked Eau de Fier, and found my sample much more wearable than, say, Bvlgari Black.
A lost masterpiece, Fier.
It’s too warm and humid today to get too crazy with the smoke scent, so instead I went with a drop from a sample of CJ Scents Dirty Rose. It has a slight ashtray smell over the rose, very dirty. I only used a very small drop, that is enough for me and anyone around me LOL It smells like an recluse old aunt who chain-smokes no filter cigarettes and tries to cover it up with expensive perfume.
I like it, but it’s really better in cooler weather.
Oh, that sounds fun!
SOTD = L’AP Seville a l’Aube
I know you’re not supposed to keep perfumes inside the bathroom but my bottle has held a spot inside my medicine cabinet ever since I acquired it in 2012 ? which makes it 7 years old this fall and it is still as fragrant as ever or even better!
I got back to the U.S. late Wednesday and it had been so crazy catching up with life. I planned to be at work today to just ease back into work on a Fridaybwhen there are fewer people.
My vacation was absolutely enjoyable. The Amalfi Coast is so pretty and caters to varying lifestyles and age groups. I am slowly dripping pictures and videos (posted one already and plan to post another one) to Instagram @hajusuuri. While I didn’t do all the hikes, my alternate activities brought discoveries only I experienced. Some day, I will go back to Rome as we were only there for part of a day bookending the trip. On the co-worker, I basically either ignored her, waved her away if she kept talking, or used my standard “Good for you” plus a fake smile.
On my hikes, there was one plant that smelled so fragrant I wanted to bottle it. Comparing my pictures to those online as well as my olfactory impressions, I concluded that the plant was Spanish Broom – it smelled like vanilla nectar to me and the description I read was spot on (honey vanilla). I will post the picture soon!
Perfume-wise, I went commando most days as I did not want to interfere with local smells. I walked into several perfume stores in Sorrento: Carthusia (company store) and Sabine Scents (niche perfume boutique). Sabine carries, among others, Zoologist, ELDO, Tauer, RaniaJ and just about the entire Demeter line (marketed as Library of Fragrance). Duty Free was huge – even Jo Malone, Atelier Cologne and Diptyque were on display. I also smelled the newish Mugler Alien Fusion, sweeter and lighter than the original (and no more root beer vibe). I did not buy any perfumes but found Clinique Body Butter in a pump which format is not available in the U.S.
Anyway, back to work. Looking forward to catching up on 2 weeks’ worth of posts!
Welcome back! Sounds like a wonderful trip
Thank you. It really was! We’re thinking perhaps Austria next year!
Good to hear it was an enjoyable trip!
I found perfume shopping in Italy very satisfying. I was surprised at how many local, niche perfumers we encountered!
I saw the local perfume shops but :::: gasp :::: had no time to stop by as we were pretty much constantly on the go. Sorrento in particular had a good number of the small shops.
Your trip sounds wonderful!
I enjoyed it a lot!
I’m sorry to welcome you back 🙂 but glad to see you.
On the part of no perfume buy: are you feeling alright? Not a single “large sample” from the whole enjoyable vacation trip? 🙂 Or are those “samples” your way of handling life in lieu of vacations?
Ha! I thought about buying yet another back up of No.19 EDP ?
I think the only perfume I bought that was in lieu of a vacation there (in the immediate future and not ruling it out entirely) was Demeter New Zealand.
Maybe it would be a good CP if not already done (and I am too lazy to look) — wear a perfume that reminds you of a destination where you’ve been, plan to go and will some day and / or a fantasy vacation.
Welcome back! Glad to see you posting today!
Thanks, jalapeño! I need to read all the posts as I like to keep up with family ❤️❤️❤️
Welcome back!
Thanks, lillyjo! As much as I love being on vacation, it’s nice to be back home.
Welcome back! Glad you had such a good trip—it’s such a lovely part of the world to visit. Did you enjoy that last, on-foot stretch of getting to the top of Vesuvius??? I wish I’d been fully down the fragrance rabbit hole when I was hanging out in Sorrento during my Pompeiian adventures. (Then again, that might’ve distracted me from the limoncello…?)
Thanks! Had to be in foot from the 1,000 feet point. There were places where the ground seemed to have been damaged. Glad I went as who knows for how much longer people will be allowed up!
Pompeii must have been like you going to a candy store!
Just a bit of powdery smoke today with Volutes. Three more weeks and I’m done. So antsy to get moving! Happy friYAY to all. ✌?
And HOW did I miss WW birthday..? ? Leaves if Grass was one of the hardest books to donate when I started Marie Kondo-ing my life (although, I’ve never read HER book. ??♀️)
“I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you”
I sing the body electric, Deva!!
SOTD is LA CURIE Incendo? incenso? I didn’t have my glasses on. All smoke. love it.
15 days to Africa.
I don’t know if I’ve read “Leaves of Grass” in its entirety, but I’ve read a number of Walt Whitman’s poems. I was inspired enough that I am growing calamus (Acorus calamus). I haven’t tried using the root in cooking, but the leaves have a lovely scent when touched. I could swear I’ve seen calamus as a note in a couple of perfumes or colognes.
Walt Whitman has such a distinctive voice and meter to his work.
I am so excited for you and T-Rex!
Great Pick Robin!!
SoTD is Copal Azur over Bronze Goddess body creme.
You all motivated me to open my jar.
The sun goddess in me is smiling. This might work well….
Happy weekend All.
That body cream is wonderful. I will need to dig mine out of a box sometime soon! (All my fragrances are still half-packed from a move a month ago.)
OH, I will have to try that combo!
The sun is finally out and I felt it was not the season for Habanita, so I’m in Un Jardin en Mediterranee for the first time this spring.
Nice!
It really is one of my favorite fresh figs, suitable for warm weather, more so that the coconut figs, Premier Figuier and Philosykos, I find.
Picked up the Habanita torch for you, although I’d have preferred the sunshine.
Holding good thoughts for sunshine to go your way 🙂
You smell great, I adore Habanita.
Wearing Lampblack and trying to recover from a neck cream that’s triggered some allergic reaction. It looks like I’ve been strangled – like there are rope burns on my neck. Not exactly the look I was going for!
Nice to see a post from you but sorry to read about your rash. I hope it goes away quickly!
Yikes! Hope that your rash doesn’t stick around! Got calamine?
Oh no! Do you mind mentioning which one? Years ago, I used Philosphy Fragrance free body lotion and broke out in a really bad rash so much so that a co-worker thought I had second degree burns! It resolved by itself after 2 days but man …
Flying today, so vaguely CPish in AC Vanilla Incensee.
Close enough, and hope it was a good flight!
I’m in Tauer Incense Extreme, which may or may not count for the CP. I wanted something super-dry.
Calypso, when you get a chance, please see my post, above.
I think it counts! Incense is burned and produces smoke.
Hello Y’all and Happy FriYAY!
No smoke for me today….it’s 90 degrees and too hot for smoke here! LOL
I’m finishing the work week in CK One Summer (2016 edition)….Love this one on the hottest days!
Any clue what I have to look forward to in Savannah on August 1st?
I think you’ll love Savannah! I’m going there next Saturday to pick up 2 of my kids that have been in Florida visiting grandparents. Oodles of cute restaurants, shops, and Riverwalk scene….lots of history if you enjoy historic tours and such! Make sure to buy some pralines too! ?
Thanks!
Friday, oh how I love thee.
Working from home today and so glad it’s gorgeous out as I had a nice leisurely stroll this morning and lunch outdoors. Just finished baking a lemon cake (yes, I am working today) for a dear friend that I’ll drop off later today.
SOTD: Bliss Vanilla Bergamot body butter
Lemon cake! You’ve transported me back to the Amalfi Coast — there are lemon trees and big fat lemons everywhere! In Sorrento, there are lemon trees in public sidewalks.
We had oranges growing outside our hotel room in Sorrento. Amazing how *casual* it all seemed. You know, we ALL have fresh citrus trees lining our streets and gardens. . . ?
Margiela Untitled L’ Eau today, which is such a good warm weather smoke and green scent.
Today we went to Niedermohrschwihr for a walk and then some wine tasting and shopping at Mr Mullenbach. Bought seven cases of wine, some sylvaner, riesling, pinot Noir rose und cremant. Had a Flammkuchen for dinner. Too sad our holidays are now over, tomorrow we head for home.
Lucky you! It is so beautiful up in those vineyards.
After weeks of gloriously unseasonable weather, the heat is finally showing up ‘round here. Would’ve been nice if it’d waited until after the day for wearing a tobacco-based scent, but oh well. It was toss-up between Chergui and Vanilla Flash, so I went with a bit of both for today’s CP.
Have a great day and enjoy your weekend, wherever you are, NSTers!
Sounds like a great combo!
It definitely ain’t bad!?
I was nearly going to do Apres L’Ondee (After the rain) which would have been totally appropriate to the weather pattern and season. Instead I went with Mossy Green by Tom Ford- which is an incense laced green, which really does evoke moss rocks by a tiny woodland stream- and perhaps someone doing a Havdolah* ceremony nearby.
It is a beautiful scent, unfortunately out of production.
*Havdolah (or however it is usually written out in English) is a ceremony to mark the end of Sabbath and welcoming of a new week. It evokes each of the five senses, with a little spice box usually containing cloves to create a beautiful smell and candles to provide a sense of warmth and light.
Ah, yes, the smell of burning wax and cloves. I’m familiar!
I know it’s late, and most daily participants are already gone from the thread, but since these days I rarely had time even to read the NST, let alone post, and today I actually participate in the CP, I decided to report that I’m enjoying the last half-drop of my Aftelier Vanilla Smoke extrait from a tiny sample a kind perfumista friend shared with me. I don’t think I need a real bottle but I might buy another tiny sample – just to enjoy it a couple of times more.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
*waves* I’m always late, so I get to see what everyone wore but I usually feel silly commenting. You have a great weekend too!
That’s a good one!
I usually comment around 5pm EST or later, so you’re still an early bird in my book.
I’m usually a late poster too and do usually end up reading most of the posts.
Vanilla Smoke parfum is one of my favorites!
I always read through at the end of the night.
I’m always late, and have occasionally considered posting on Saturday.
I’m often a late poster too. And I will read in the evening or the next morning whatever I couldn’t earlier.
Wearing Rogue Perfumery Champs Lunaires on this sunny day. I have the day off so I’m a BIG tuberose today. His Chypre Siam is already on my FB list and this one might go on it too!
Don’t forget your Rabbits tomorrow!!
I don’t think I’ve tried anything from this brand – I’ll look it up.
Thanks for the “rabbits” reminder!
I just recently sampled the Rogue line too, and Chypre Siam was my definite favorite. I think I’ll be passing on the 4 masculine perfume samples at the freebie meet, though the fougere was quite nice.

Through one of those strange twists in history, Dunedin ( where I live) has the largest Walt Whitman collection in the southern hemisphere. Around 1900 a librarian here ( W H Trimble) was introduced to Whitman’s work, and after initially passing him off, became obsessed with his poetry and together with his wife produced the first concordance of Leaves of Grass ( going through the poem word by word, line by line, noting the places in which each word is used, to make an alphabetical listing). There is a great exhibition of all his first editions at the moment but I love the idea of this couple working in their home in a small colonial town with sheets and sheets of paper ( they spent more on paper than on meat each week) for years and years. So, happy birthday Walt Whitman and thank you to the Trimbles. CP In Hyde.
Hey, that really is a weird twist, and thanks for the link, have set that aside for Sunday afternoon reading.
I’m off to read that article—thanks for sharing. I’m really enjoying the idea of them spending more on paper than meat—it’s just so evocative.
SOTD is Parfum Empire Tabac Tabou Extrait.
Perfect!
Nice! Green tobacco turned out to be unusual and lovely in a perfume.
I really like that one!
Song of the Day: “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. Love that bass line! ??
As promised, today’s weather is bright, sunny and warm, with no storm clouds in view at all. Enjoying this like nobody’s business. ???
SOTD = SSS Fireside Intense the travel spray. I went for full out smoke today, and rather like this. It was a blind buy that worked out for me. It isn’t something that I wear often, but I enjoy it when the mood strikes. ?
Still love that song and Ritchie Blackmore. Super happy for your nice day!???
I was very happy to see the sun all day today!
It was nice on my area as well. Rock on Jalapeno! ?
I’m happy to hear that you had nice weather, too. We’ve both had a lot of yucky weather lately.
As much as I am tired of the gray days and rain, many others have it much worse. I am reminding myself. ?
You did go all out! Brava!
Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised at how GOOD it smelled in today’s warm weather.
Oh wow! I remember distinctly that song playing when I was a kid while at Disney in California; I was swimming at the pool at the campground we stayed at. Great times!
Early start today since I met up with a friend I’ve known since nursery school who is in town for a relative’s graduation. It was a blast catching up, but I’m pooped and it delayed my work day so got a bit cramped.
I wore Jasmin et Cigarette which was nice for an 80 degree day.
Heading out soon to join an Afro-Brazilian drumming circle for the 1st time. I have no drumming experience so we’ll see how that goes ?
Sounds like a great day! I admire you trying something for the first time. I bet it will be fun?
Have a great time Elisa. There’s nothing like that in my neck of the woods.
No CP for me, I received the traveling box of perfume from lucasai’s Chemistinthebottle blog group, and therefore trying out Bombay Bling. This morning I opened the box and had about 6 perfumes all over various parts of my hands and arms. I suspect this will repeat for the next week or so as I try as much as possible on skin before my morning shower. It’s a huge box so I know I will only try a fraction of what’s available.
The box sounds like alot of fun, and a little overwhelming.
I’m pretty sure Bombay Bling has a tobacco note. The last time I wore it, I said to my boyfriend, “Why does your cigarette suddenly smell good?” Then I realized it was me.
SotD = Berdoues Oud al Sahraa
Woody scents or a little oud is a close to “smoky” as I dare to go. Not close at all I guess. 😀 I do love the smell of a campfire, and woodsmoke clinging to clothes smells heavenly. And unlit tobacco smells are so interesting to me.
Looking forward to reading everyone’s thoughts on smoky smells today. There’s always something new to burn, er um I mean learn.
Happy friYAY! to everyone.
I liked that Berdoues perfume, but it was very quiet on me, and sadly gone after 4 hours.
Lol, tiffanie! Yes, there is always something to burn.
No smoke for me today. No scent other than trying the scented body powders I purchased. One is Cherry Blossom, the other is Honey Almond. And one called Little Black Dress, which I’ll try another time (it’s fairly floral.). No talc, which is nice – makes it very silky. And they work well with my big powder puff. Just in time for warm weather….
I love scented body powder. Where did you find them?
http://Www.bonnybubbles.net. I ordered samples sometime back and liked them, so I ordered a bit larger size this time.
No affiliation or anything. I was actually looking on Etsy for a powder puff. Surprisingly rare.
Started the day at the dentist, which I did not care for at all. My kids had a dance with their therapy group, which was very nice. I do not like the smell of wood smoke, or bon fires or fireplaces. I do like the smell of dry tobacco, I wore Cuir Impertinent, from my last sample. I get alot of tobacco from it, no leather to speak of. I love it though. The weather was nice today. Will be getting storm’s by morning. Have a great weekend everyone ?
Did you have any problems with anyone this time at the dentist? Or did folks mind their p’s and q’s?
I put in a request at the desk, before my appointment that I wanted only the established hygienist to work with me, so that was fine. I have a lot of work that needs to be done, and it just seems never ending. My dentist wants me to be a little quicker to do some of the big stuff, but I honestly don’t think she understands that even with insurance it’s very costly. I don’t understand dental insurance practices at all. I think it should be more like health insurance.
I get where you’re coming from re: dental expenses. They ARE expen$ive! And even if you put it on a credit card, that is only delaying or stretching out having to pay off the bill.
Amen. I’m having minor surgery on Monday, and have been having anxiety dreams for weeks. The last one featured very detailed and realistic dental work, and when I woke up I thought, at least I’ll be unconscious for the surgery.
Good luck for monday
Bon courage for Monday!
Thanks!
I think it was the Black Narcissus who posited that it is us former smokers who particularly love tobacco in perfume. I am smelling wonderful in Habanita (modern edp), if perhaps a bit overdressed for an evening of Pony baseball. It works with the weather, though, which is chilly and gloomy. I am ready for warm weather and warm- weather perfumes!
I hope nobody was hit by the tornadoes, or flooding. My cousin in Iowa had two feet of water in her basement.
Ack! Your poor cousin!
Oh my gosh, flooding like that is a real nightmare. I can’t even imagine. Good luck to your cousin, and good luck to you on Monday.
Thank you. Good luck with all your dental work.
That must be heartbreaking for you cousin. I hope that her situation is resolved quickly and this crazy weather pattern calms down.
I hope it doesn’t turn out to be the new normal. The massive wildfires out here on the West Coast are bad enough.
Not sure if anyone is still reading. I went to Wally World (Walmart) after work today. I passed the perfume isle and randomly sprayed on Stetson having read here that it’s a nixe scent. I hafta say, it’s not bad for a modern scent. Not sure if I’d wear it but I wonder what the vintage was like? I also tried the current version of Wild Musk by Coty which someone s mentioned at some point. I guess I’m not much for straight up musk.
Oops, that should be aisle.
I remember Stetson smelling very rugged and manly, like the commercials. I used to wear Wild Musk, but I smelled the current version and it just smelled cheap to me. Maybe it always did, and I didn’t notice before? Lol, idk..
The modern version is unisex, IMO. Give it a sniff if you come across it.
Heh, it’s been a while since I’ve heard anyone refer to “Wally World”. A blast from the past there.
? A friend of mine still uses the acronym.
Welp, put on a dab of T-Rex after work and got to the stage where my nose tells me everything is on fire (I think it’s the resins, champaca, and ylang ylang?)…and still couldn’t make it through. Sorry T-Rex, you’re too gargantuan for me.
Ha, you’ve sold me, it’s going on my list.
I hope you enjoy it more than I did! It’s a massive incense fragrance.
I’ve fallen behind on the “thinking of you” sorts of messages.
Happy belated birthday to May birthday people and families, and early happy birthday to people with June birthdays. 🙂
Congratulations to graduates, for folks celebrating special anniversaries, and for those who have gotten new jobs they like.
Get well wishes to those recovering from injury or illnesses. Don’t push yourself. Take care of yourself like you’d take care of a loved one. Self-care and checking in with yourself about how you feel are important.
Sympathies for those going through tough times.
Safe travel to people who are traveling. (I think Deva particularly needs those wishes! *virtual hugs* and I hope — I bet we all hope — that for the rest of your travels, no one uses tire irons inappropriately.)
Those on vacation or going on vacation, enjoy the vacation. 🙂 Remember sunscreen and drinking lots of water if you’re somewhere hot.
Although I’m bad at responding to individual comments about life events or everyday circumstances, I do read the threads and think of NST folks in their various situations. And I never quite seem to shake that long-ago nursing aide training when it comes to particular health issues.
