Thursday scent of the day 5/9

Posted by Robin on 9 May 2019 207 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Europe Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I had planned on Hiram Green Moon Bloom today, but then I came down with some sort of nasty virus last night. So instead, I'm commando and will probably stick with tea and kleenex today.

Reminder: on 5/10, wear a fragrance by Heeley, Hiram Green, Histoires de Parfums or Honoré des Prés, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter H.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing HdP Vert Pivoine. On my skin rose and cedar are very prominent with some greenness. Very pretty and office friendly. One more wear and my decant will be gone. Not full bottle worthy. I will not really miss it.

True, but I thought flu season was. But this sure feels like flu — achy, exhausted, headache, bones ache, the whole 9 yards except I do not at the moment have a fever.

HA — I did! I even made my husband check my scalp and my back. But I think (knock on wood) I am too much better today for a tick-borne disease.

Vert Pivoine is one of my options this week. I kinda forget I have it, and I still have about 18ml in my decant. Pretty and office friendly covers it, I think.

It is definitely a nice no-brainer and it has decent longevity. I can still smell it on my sweater after 6 hours!

Agree, especially if they keep on producing Vamp. I’m more than halfway through my first bottle. (I’ve got a BUB). I won’t mind if they change the name. They can even call it Fruity something, as long as they don’t alter the formula 😉

I wish I’d bought Chaman’s Party before it disappeared, and wish I could remember what the Bonte’s Bloom even smelled like — nobody ever mentions it here so it must not be so fantastic?

Glad I did get carrots at least.

Is it just the US where Honoré is no longer available? Their website still carries Chaman’s Party and there are still shops in the Netherlands carrying the line.

I’m sorry…I really shouldn’t have worded that the way I did! They certainly aren’t carried in as many stores here as they once were, and given that they also stopped releasing new fragrances, I sort of assumed they were done, and would eventually disappear once they sold out of everything. But I could be quite wrong so I will keep my mouth shut a few more years and see 🙂

Very late last night I tried HdP 1828, which I think is “Jules Verne.” The combination of notes listed sounded like something I’d like, but I wasn’t thrilled with how the combination actually smelled on my skin the first few minutes after application. I conked out before I could wash it off. I’ll give it another chance sometime, but for now I like “Casanova” much better.

Oh! I think I need to try Casanova then. I’ve been on a lavender binge lately also with Creed’s Aberdeen Lavander and SL Encens et Lavande at bedtime. Also tried the new (ish?) Tom Ford Lavender Extreme over the weekend and really liked it. May be searching out at least a decant or larger sample to give it a further test run. Have you tried the TF?

It was a just spray on a test strip at NM, but I didn’t find it sweet at all. Some nice depth to it, as I recall but couldn’t say from what, LOL. Not the best at picking out any but the most obvious notes : )

SOTD is Piguet’s Bandit extrait – I’m feeling the need for galbanum and leather today, but just a dab or two. 🙂

I finished off yesterday with Sonoma Scent Studio’s Incense Pure, and added a spritz of Chanel No. 22 EDC, boy was that a lovely bed time scent.

Sorry you are sick, Robin. Get better.

I tried Heeley Verveine d’Eugene in the morning. I love the citrus notes in it, but unfortunately rhubarb smells a bit weird in this scent. Maybe the combinationof rhubarb and blackcurrant does not work very well for me? Apart from that, it’s a delicious citrus-fruity perfume. Recommended for fans of verbena and rhubarb.

In the afternoon, I sprayed some Heeley Menthe Fraiche. Will probably finish my sample today. I described it earlier, so I will only say that I do not want to buy a full 100 ml bottle for 130 euros but still hope to get a decant one day.

35 days to Africa! That’s my gift to me.
I must say that Winter Palace is not for me. I had high hopes. It starts out pleasantly enough, fresh with blood orange, but but noonish or so all I could smell was powdered blood orange. I had been wearing box of eels for a few days and the difference between one that to me is masterfully blended and one that has a bottle with a dragon I had a hankering for…well I’m not buying a bottle.

Negligible points in Jour d’Hermes parfum.

Thanks for keeping me and Mayhem in your thoughts. Still miss him like crazy, but we’re getting by. Mischief (his sister) is doing ok, just a bit clingier than usual. (Well, and also she has been trying to pass a hairball for the past week and has had a persistent cold for a while, so we’re taking her to the vet today, but globally, emotionally, she seems ok.)

We’re going on an intensive ring shopping expedition this Saturday and Sunday, hitting up a number of shops and showrooms ranging from SF to Monterey. Wish me luck. I see rings behind my closed eyes, and have learned more about diamonds than I ever thought I’d know. Any tips would be deeply appreciated.

Glad to hear you’re healing from Mayhem’s loss and that Mischief is handling it really well. I am tickled pink that you used “globally”.

The least romantic advice: If you plan on wearing the ring often after you’re married, getting a nice one makes sense; if not, you’re just getting it for the next generation to inherit.. My grandmother had a ring with 3 diamonds. Before she passed, she repurposed the diamonds to a pair of diamond studs and a pendant.

Agree with this advice. I would also say, think about what kind of setting fits the way you live as well. My husband surprised me with my ring, and after 20+ years I’m still thinking I need to have it reset to be more sleek and low profile.

Haha 🙂 That’s really good advice. We went to Tiffany and I tried on a really beautiful ring with a sharp and uncomfortable edge. The SA insisted I’d get used to it very quickly, but I have my doubts. Reading your comment further solidifies my idea that the SA and I have different ideas of how I should live my life.

Another vote for low profile! I also think a lot about resetting my ring, but I never get around to it. I basically don’t wear it anymore. The high profile rings are beautiful, the potential for catching them on gloves, small people, etc. is too high.

That is good advice, but I am definitely planning to wear it every day! I wear my class ring consistently, so I think I can manage a daily engagement ring, too 🙂 (I went to a school where the class ring was a Big Deal.)

That’s good advice hajusurri! I haven’t worn my wedding or engagement rings in almost 18 years. They stopped fitting my finger during my 1st pregnancy, and I’ve never bothered to have them re-sized. Truthfully, I’ve never been one to wear rings, so I’ve never missed them…..

CONGRATULATIONS Koyel! Exciting times straight ahead for you!

In time, you will remember only the good moments with Mayhem and I’m so glad for you that you can still get cat cuddles.

For the ring, if you go for diamonds maybe consider whether you want it set in yellow gold or white gold or platinum. I wear my aunt’s engagement ring every day and I like the less showy platinum the diamond is set in, but it’s just me and my two cents.

Yeah, we talk a lot about the good moments with Mayhem <3 there really weren't many bad moments, because as soon as it looked like his life was going to get bad, we said goodbye; we wanted his last days to be happy and comfortable.

Good point about the metal. Because of my darker skin color, I think rose gold might be the least "showy." I tried on a ring in rose gold with a peach diamond set in it, and it looked like my finger just naturally had tremendous sparkle and glow to it, if that makes any sense. (I guess, my skin color is the skin version of rose gold?) On the other hand, platinum looks so pretty and shiny on me, and what if I develop allergies to the copper/silver in the rose gold? But I will keep in mind that since I'm not a very blingy person, less showy would probably be good.

The way you describe it, the rose-gold sounds like it complements your skin tone beautifully. 🙂

Another thing you mentioned, about one ring you tried having a sharp edge — that really does not sound like something a person would “get used to.”

I don’t wear much in the way of jewelry — I give most of the earrings and necklaces and such that I make to my mother — and don’t wear rings. But I think the suggestions above about comfort as well as beauty being a consideration make great sense. Also as mentioned, especially if you’ll be wearing it under gloves, you wouldn’t want something that was too high or spiky!

          Good luck with the shopping!

My ring shopping suggestion is to not forget about vintage or second hand rings. If you have some favorite vintage stores that carry fine jewelry, check there too. I’m technically engaged, though my boyfriend and I decided after getting engaged that we really don’t care about getting married. I don’t cal him my fiance since we have no plans to marry. But we’ve been together for 13 years and technically engaged for 7.5 years. So I wear an engagement ring. I saw it at my favorite vintage store and was so drawn to it . When I tried it on, it fit perfectly. Didn’t even need to be resized. So, consider vintage too!

Thanks for the reminder, though this means the field of choices is even bigger than I thought >.> I’d mostly just have to look at vintage settings with new stones, though, since I’m interested in lab-generated stones. I did see that Brilliant Earth (which does lab diamonds) has a vintage section; that seems worth a look.

If you like vintage settings, it’s a nice idea. You can take a vintage band to a jeweler to be polished. I have my original diamond which is in a high profile setting. These days I wear my grandmother’s ring.
It is a low profile antique basket setting and is sentimental, pretty and practical.
I think you’ll know which ring is right for you when you see it.

We got married after 15 years together so we just got matching rings he had made by someone we know. They have little symbols that are meaningful to just us and our relationship. His version is solid and mine is almost a filigree style with small diamond chips. I’m happy with it and it’s comfortable to wear.

Spent 8 years as a professional goldsmith, so I can definitely provide advice if you have questions. Nothing that could fit in a pithy comment, because I could write reams and reams and reams.

There are pros and cons to nearly every choice you’re going to make—White gold or platinum? Diamond or no? Do I optimize color or clarity, or sacrifice both for budget? Princess cut, round, something else?—the key is making the choices that best meet your goals, and work with people that are going to set your expectations appropriately about how those materials are going to wear over time, given your lifestyle, whatever that may be.

Finally feeling up to perfume again. I had my poor abscessed tooth out and a bone graft placed one day, and the next I came down with a killer stomach virus. Good times. I can really think of much better ways to spend vacation days.

Wearing Marc Jacobs Daisy, which I never really gave the time of day to before. (I think the plastic flowers put me off.) But, hey, Sephora sent me a sample. And really, it’s very nice. Not earth-shattering, but pleasant and friendly. Simple but not stupid. Sunny and a little sweet and good company.

It’s pretty potent (as I think most of their scents are) but it’s unusual and complex and keeps my attention. I’ve got three of their scents, so will have to make a major choice for tomorrow and the CP! Guess I’ll see what my mood is–and the weather–we’ve got many more inches of rain in the forecast with possible flooding (again).

Friday here, so I’ll be wearing Hiram Green’s Shangri-La. I did think at first it was a bit a sweet, but changed my mind after a couple of wearings, and now have a FB.
I hope you’re feeling better soon, Robin.

In Coromandel, because I’ve been wanting to give it a full try and I have no meetings of any kind today. I love it!

I would love to sample your quiche! Do you have a secret way of keeping the asparagus from being too moist or, to put it more bluntly, sweating? I’ve tried to include it in quiches but it always gets watery.

I used fresh asparagus, baked the dough for 10 min, then put the asparagus on the dough without the filling and baked another 10 min. Then I put the filling over the quiche and baked for 25 min.
You could also try to pan fry the asparagus before putting it on the dough, just don’t precook it

I’m in Prada Infusion de Vetiver today. Nice and citrusy, great for my late morning walk in this humid weather.
I don’t think I need a bottle of this, but then again, it’s competing with the banana bread wafting in the kitchen, so I’m not really sure!

I’m wearing 10 Corso Como. Unfortunately, I can’t enjoy it, because my head is splitting. I think it’s the humidity, idk… nothing is helping, not even chocolate chip cookies, lol, because that’s a remedy right?
Robin, I hope you feel better soon.

I hope your headache heads for the hills soon. And…you smell nice. I like 10 CC but I would sometimes get a little dill in the dry down. A friend of mine wears it beautifully. No pickles in sight.

I wore Hendley Blond again and am quickly falling for it. I am getting a lot more development today since I’m wearing short sleeves and it’s not getting rubbed against fabric. It starts as a rooty, ashy, yet fruity iris (the osmanthus, I think) and the mid development has the most lovely cantaloupe note paired with jasmine and musk. It’s super interesting! I will likely buy a travel size after I finish my sample. It’s currently sold out on the website, but hopefully they’ll restock it soon.

    SotD = Hiris

My Scented Simplification Project says Thursdays are for Hiris. I love it. Last night I wore Infusion d’Iris before bedtime. Soft iris makes me happy. 😀

Missed posting yesterday, life continues to throw me loop-de-loops, but I stayed calm in Terracotta Le Parfum, my Wednesday favorite!

More experimentation today with the HdP discovery set and an HdP sample from Surrender to Chance.

I tried 1804 (George Sand). I didn’t like the beginning of it, and thought to myself, “Give it a few minutes.” I didn’t like it better after a few minutes, so I wiped my inner arms with witch hazel and then washed them with soft soap, which considerably lessened the smell. Then I tried the sample I got from StC, 1873, which I believe is Colette. I actually really liked 1873. 🙂

It’s odd to me that from the notes listed I would have thought I’d like 1804 and 1828, but apparently I don’t like how those notes blend in those fragrances. idk, folks.

Wearing some Prada Amande from my little 8 ml bottle.

It was a beautiful day, too bad I was stuck in a freezing cold office. My cubby buddy and I are going to seal off the a/c ducts tomorrow with some cardboard as they are blowing nearly non-stop right over us. We tried to get the temperature adjusted, but someone keeps changing it back. The temps in the office are so different in areas so no one is happy. Think I will plug in my heater too.

Just read an interesting article — I think in the New York Times — about how office buildings that are sealed off from the outside weather generally have temperatures set for men, as determined for their comfort in the 1960s. (Cis-gendered) men generally are larger and have more muscle mass than (cis-gendered) women. Where a man might be comfortable with the temperature in an office being 70 degrees F, a woman might be more comfortable with the temperature at 75 F. The article had pictures of women wearing blankets and Snugglies at work. If it wasn’t the New York Times, it was the Washington Post. Either way, well worth a read, for the “it’s not just you” factor as well as the science.

That certainly explains alot, including struggles over the temp at home. My husband is comfortable at 69 degrees while I prefer it around 73
