Wednesday scent of the day 4/10

Posted by Robin on 10 April 2019 252 Comments

It's Hump Day, and Siblings Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m pretending it's warmer than it really is, in Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum.

Reminder: 4/12 will be Platonic Ideal Friday...wear your platonic ideal of X (and X can be anything: yourself, a note, a fragrance family, a style or characteristic — be as creative as you like). (You can find an easy definition of platonic ideal here.) Suggested by Jalapeno and Koyel.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Blackberry & Bay, and both the blackberry and the bay are showing up on my skin. The bay is mitigating the fruity notes with and interesting herbal vibe. Nice. I don’t particularly like Jo Malone, but this may be decant worthy.

SOTD Mugler Cologne Come Together – it’s great. Has anyone tried this? Is it basically the same as the original Cologne?

Mugler Cologne vs JPG Fleur de Male – too similar to have both?

Considering getting Mugler Cologne for my 13 year old for his Easter Basket. His 1 and only cologne is Declaration l’eau (when he was little he wore Mustela Musti). So, If I get this on Fragrancenet, what else should I buy for at least $26 to get to the free shipping threshold?? blind buy a classic? celebuscent? drug store cheapie? some lemming I may not be aware of? Please help me decide!

Ohhh, that sounds nice. I have a decant of the original Mugler Cologne somewhere, must dig it out. Does the Mugler Cologne Come Together have a fig note?

Re: shopping on FragranceNet, what types of scent do you enjoy? I’ve purchased several Bulgari scents for cheap, as well as Lovely by SJP and Jessica McClintock. What I really like about FragranceNet is they carry some body products like the soaps, lotions and deodorants in certain scents. My last deodorant purchase was Coriandre, which I think I got for $13 bucks if I remember correctly.

      and / or

I wouldn’t have thought of it off the top of my head – now that you mention it I guess they have some herbal qualities in common but I think of Aliage as being citrusy/juicy whereas Devin is really a barbershop kind of feel and you can definitely tell it is a leather base albeit a gentle one, which I would not say about Aliage.

Ahh, taking a little break from playing catch-up at work…so I can play catch-up at NST! I traveled to the central coast of California last week and it was just unbearably gorgeous. All the hills were green and the wildflowers were in full bloom. We drove out to Carrizo Plain and the ground was fully carpeted in yellow wildflowers that filled the air with a smell like honey. It was so quiet there that we could hear the birds’ wings flapping over our heads. I even made my sister pull the car over so I could hop out and sniff a Cistus plant, lol. She has a lemon tree in bloom in her backyard that I kept sneaking out and sniffing gratuitously. Oh oh and we went to Pismo Beach and saw a SEA OTTER in the wild!! I could keep going. That trip was just the thing my soul needed after a bleak midwestern winter.

SOTD is Corsica Furiosa from the swapmeet. It smells like freshly-snapped stems and has a vague, almost-powderiness that reminds me of No. 19. In the drydown I smell something resinous that might be labdanum or mastic. Love it.

Isn’t Corsica Furiosa fabulous?! I was in Napa last spring, and while it was a very brief season there, it was spectacular. I went flower crazy, snapping photos of all kinds of blooms. I love being in a spot that’s so quiet you can hear the wind whispering through grasses and trees. Glad your soul got a nice reprieve from the dreary midwestern winter. I remember those winters, and they were not fun.

Friends, I am having a sudden and tempestuous love affair with galbanum! After years of merely tolerating it, an epiphany. What happened was I happened upon a heavily discounted Parfum de Feuilles candle, which is lovely, and it’s sitting in the corner of my living room. For weeks it’s been occasionally wafting a wallop of tomato-stem-galbanum at me when I walk past (even when unlit) and somehow this added up to critical mass last night when I suddenly realized I wanted nay NEEDED the largest dose of galbanum I could get. I lit the candle in the bathroom, dug out an old Silences mini I had planned to give away (what a fool I had been!), and dumped some in the bath. My galbanum romance had truly begun.

Anyway I’m wearing Magie Noire today.

I like H&C better, but this one is very beautiful too. It’s like the most delicious, foody bowl of oatmeal ever, maybe with a nice dollop of ground hazelnuts and spoonfuls of brown sugar, being eaten on a warm field. Yum yum, this whole line is great.

Oat and cornflower is my favourite of the series and I am about to finish my bottle. To me the scent is like a classic NZ biscuit called “Krispie” ( not to be confused with rice crispies ) made from vanilla, oats and dessicated coconut. The coconut gets toasted during baking Which adds a slightly caramelised warmth to the whole smell. I think Oat and Cornflower is my favourite foody scent

I think I am accidentally on theme wearing Onyrico Empireo, at least when it comes to the idea behind it:

“Dante Alighieri, the greatest Italian poet, author of the “Divina Commedia”, one of the masterpieces of world literature, described symbolically, with the image of the White Rose of Paradise, the manifestation of the sublime metaphysical vision.
Mystical flower, feminine symbol of purity and absolute beauty, incarnation of virtuous love that is able to transcend the limits of the human intellect, the white rose is the fresh and clean heart of Empireo, the Onyrico’s fragrance dedicated to Dante’s poem.”

However, I can smell no rose in it so far. Soft, slightly powdery vanilla-benzoin-tonka scent. But I agree that it smells fresh and kind of clean. Not stunning, but nice.

Well, fresh and clean kind of fits the idea of Dante’s platonic love for Beatrice. 🙂

It’s a nice scent, just kind of tame – cleaned and softened oriental.

I also tried another Onyrico scent, Tau, which I found more interesting.

Trying out Brooklyn and Istanbul, not Constantinople ?, today from Gallivant. Brooklyn is of course a borough vs. a city but why split hairs.

I am enjoying them both. And Istanbul has delivered some vanilla as others promised it would yesterday. Whew. ?

Ha ha re Constantinople! When I was a teen, my best friend and I would grumble about being asked to do something along the lines of “I was just about in Upper Volta when I finally found what she asked me for…” Burkino Faso, while a perfectly nice name, definitely does not communicate the same eye-roll, teen exasperation.

Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours on this blustery day. I’ll be working the next two days and then I’m taking a week off for spring break with my daughters. They’re 11 & 13 and happily tag along on sniffing expeditions (as rare as they are). We’re going to spend a couple of days in San Francisco and I’m thinking about taking them sniffing in Tigerlilly or ZGO but I’m not sure which–I’d love any suggestions/opinions! It’ll be great to get a chance to sniff a few things and purchase some samples in person.

Ditto – Never been to to Tigerlily (but planning on going someday)- ZGO has a lot of stuff, but I’ve never found them very friendly (though not necessarily unfriendly either. Just indifferent). They do carry the Mariages Freres tea line, though!
We daughters are exactly the same age and do NOT happily tag along on sniffing expeditions… 🙁

Thanks for weighing in. I can deal with indifferent but I avoid unfriendly!

Definitely not unfriendly, but indifferent. You could consider this a plus as you can sniff to your heart’s content.
Also, there are at least 2 people working there and one is quite a bit more enthusiastic. Plus, the tea, and they carry Parfums de Nicolai.

Continuing with violets this week in TDC’s I Miss Violet. This perfume makes me think of triangle cucumber and butter sandwiches, scones, jam, and clotted cream, and of course Earl Grey tea. I, on the other hand, am off to combine some mixture of vegetables and fruits in the blender never meant to be eaten together in nature.

Not hardly. This’ll be a slog. I am hoping to finish my first draft over the weekend. I have adopted a ‘fake it til I’ve written it’ attitude, which is at least getting words on the page, if not very coherent or interesting words.

Sometimes, when I am struggling , I adopt a very personal ‘just say what I think’ for the first draft rather than a ‘say what sounds intellectual/authoritative/corporate’ and that always seems to help. It takes the weight off the exercise of putting ‘important thoughts’ into words and usually conveys what I need to say far more simply and effectively (and I can tweak it in the second draft). Good luck though.

Yesterday I got up at 3, flew to Houston, gave a presentation, flew home. 21 hour day. It was really hot ( to me anyway) in Texas, then really freezing on the plane and then sooooo windy when I drove home from airport last night.

I wore JM cade and cedarwood for the day. Today is workout, shower, drink lots of water and maybe wear a aura of fatigue.

Depends where and how big and who owns it, but in my hood it’d be at least 2,100 on the lower end with no amenities. I’ve seen 1 BRs listed for 3k. A studio might be in the 1,900 range. It’s out of control.
We moved to this hood in 2000 when it was not a desirable and a little sketchy and our 1.5 BR was $1550 then.

I don’t know whether they’re “good” jobs (frankly they seem mostly useless to me) but they’re sure high-paying jobs. Don’t be envious — the cost of living (as in housing) is just nuts. Lots of us could never afford to live here if we hadn’t already been here for years.

This is exactly why there is such a huge population of working and nonworking homeless on the west coast. I don’t know anyone who can single handedly afford a rent like that. Just read an article about Seattle modeling itself after Vancouver BC… BC has a huge population or van/rv dwellers because no one can afford rent or mortgages, but is apparently the “Hip City” to live in. Seems like the aspirations a bit skewed ?

All I remember is that I did NOT like the drydown. It went on nice enough, but then it hovered for hours as something sort of edible and sort of chemical. BUT I always have trouble with gourmands . . . I had the almost the same issue with Mon Guerlain.

It doesn’t necessarily smell the same bit similar genre. I could be remembering that part wrong, but I don’t like prominent vanilla or sweet foody notes so it wasn’t for me either. I think I liked the newer flanker better.

Ugh I really need to learn my lesson and not try out perfumes for the first time on a work day. I put on Bvlgari Eau The Noir, a decant I got from the swap meet, and it immediately irritated my already touchy sinuses. Headache central this morning. And because I sprayed down my shirt, it’s persisting some there even though I tried to wash it off my skin in the bathroom. I’m thinking it’s the synthetic oud and woody/smoky materials they used.

Other than this disappointing experience, I’ve had some fun nights so far this week. I had a really great time with Deva and T-Rex on Monday night. We walked around the Seattle waterfront and went to the Olympic Sculpture Park. T-Rex is very well behaved and was very popular.

Last night my friend and I went to dinner at a Thai restaurant to celebrate our birthdays. Hers was Monday and mine is tomorrow. Unlike typical Thai restaurants, this one specializes in Northeastern cuisine. We had some amazing meatballs, an eggplant dish, glass noodles in a clay pot, and rice, greens, and pork belly wirh a fried egg. It was probably the best fried egg I’ve ever had.

I’m also dealing with eczema above my lip and on my upper lip for the first time. Any tips or advice is appreciated.

Blergh, eczema!! I once had a minor flareup on my eyelids, of all places. My treatment of choice is to put on a layer of heavy moisturizer (Eucerin is good), then top it off with a layer of a thick protective balm like aquaphor (or maybe pure shea butter if you, like me, try to avoid petrolatum). If it’s bad enough, a dermatologist could prescribe you a topical steroid cream.

Yuck in the headache and eczema. I’m a fan of hydrocortisone for a few days for faster resolution, but I use borage seed oil (I buy it in capsule form because I also take it as a supplement). I’ve used it on my cat because she gets rashy around her mouth and it clears up lickity split! I’ve used it on me for a couple of small reddish flaky patches (not sure what it is) on my upper arm and it helps. It’s high in gamma-linoleic acid which is supposed to be anti-inflammatory.

    SOTD = Mugler Angel Muse

Angel Muse is the platonic ideal of an Angel flanker: unmistakeably Angel but with an added note (hazelnut) that stands out on its own.

I had no time to take a picture for IG and I was going to select a photo from previous travels to take its place. For some reason, I kept looking for alien-like items that are shaped like the bottle because the Angel Muse bottle looks like a science experiment gone wrong but I like it anyway. I found a few possibilities then realized I should have been looking for an angel or a muse ?

I e-filed my federal return yesterday and need to follow up with the payment, an additional form (for selling stock) and read up on Estimated Tax (The quarterly amount is ridiculous! NJ taxes are done and I just need to mail it. Mom’s is next!

Lutens Bas de Soie, which just might be tied with Hiris for my ideal iris. I’ve tried carrot-y Iris 39 and root-y Iris Silver Mist, but the Lutens is just right. Floral but not powdery; green but not sneezy; soft but not fleeting or too sweet.

I am meeting a friend in the bitanic gardens today. We are like Darby and Joan….we both arrive with a thermos ( me coffee, her tea) and go and sit on a bench in our warm coats and watch the world go by while we talk about poetry and writing . The only spoiler is that she smokes ( but these meetings need a slight irritant) and I always end up picking up the butt that she seems to think ‘ doesn’t count’ as litter ( this is a pet hate of mine and I gave her a 1950s enamel pocket ashtray/ compact last time we met so today might be different). Wearing Boucheron because smokers can’t dictate the terms.

I had to look up Darby and Joan–a cultural reference that never made it to California? Your description of your trip to the botanical garden reminded me of the Paul Simon song/poem “Old Friends” which he wrote when he was in his 20s. Now that he’s in his mid 70s, I wonder how the melancholy words strike him. Old friends, cigarettes and coffee tumblers (or as too often in my friends’ cases– tethered to their mobile phones, gluten free, and post divorces and mastectomies) aside, are always a promise of a good laugh, good talk, and shedding a few years–at least momentarily. Enjoy your day and the Boucheron.

That song breaks my heart, Oakland Fresca. It was always bittersweet but with my parents gone, even more so.

Funny about your cats! Our cat would plunk himself on the heat register when the furnace kicked in. They seem to know where the best spots are.

I’ve learned to ignore what the calendar says for turning various functions on and off. There have been years where it was warm enough to have the A/C on until Halloween!

And it’s funny how every cat seems to find the warmest spot(s) in the house, no matter where it is. When the heat was off, one cat was spending most of her time upstairs in the sunniest room, sleeping in a sunbeam.

What a day, y’all. I need a stiff drink. My hubs has the flu and is running a high fever, thus I had to take Nacho to the vet to be neutered and also pick him up this evening when we had planned for my husband to do it. So I will be trying to keep him sedated and still all night (the dog, not the husband). It’s been a sh**show at work today and I really need to work late but don’t see that happening since I have to pick up the dog by 5:00.

Oh, guess I should mention perfume haha. I’m in Nirvana White for no other reason that it was the closest thing to grab when I was running out the door this morning! Gin….vodka…whiskey, who knows. But one of those is going to be drank tonight lol. 😥
