Monday scent of the day 3/4

Posted by Robin on 4 March 2019 255 Comments

It's the first Monday in March, and happy National Grammar Day to you! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in The Beat by Burberry Elixir.

Reminder: on 3/8, we'll celebrate International Women's Day. Wear a fragrance that honors the holiday in whatever way you like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is from the Burberry Spring 2019 campaign.

Encre Noire by Nathalie Larson. I think I’m gonna just gonna go ahead and make it a week of female perfumers.

My father passed away late last night after being in and out of the ICU for 11 days. Last week, he had shown some improvement, and we were hopeful that he might be discharged and be able to get some speech therapy and physical therapy to regain some sort of normal functioning, but that was not to be. He developed pneumonia again and went back to the ICU. Yesterday, my brother and I met with the palliative care team and decided that he should be taken off life support and given treatment to make him as comfortable as possible. He passed away around midnight.

A couple months ago, when my father asked me for a reading list, I realized that almost everything I’d read in 2018 was by a female author. Since giving him a list of books I’d enjoyed, I’ve been looking a bit more consciously at which books I’ve been picking, and the pattern of a preponderance of female authors has continued into 2019. I am surprised and pleased to see that through no intentional effort, the books I have found the most compelling have all been written by women!

I’m on a Tauer binge again. I have my little case of samples sitting on my desk and can’t resist them. Better than a box of bonbons, lol 😀 I’ve enjoyed dabbing PHI and Tuberose Flash over the past few days too.

Puredistance White from a sample. I didn’t pay much attention to it the first time around so thought I’d give it a go since it’s name matched the scenery (though the snow is dirty grey) and I was craving something floral, but it’s verging into dryer sheet musk territory on me and is irritating my sinuses. So I think it’s a no-go.

I love the color scheme in the Burberry ad, and I also love Mondays!

I’m in SSS Equestrian again today. It’s youthful without being childish, and fresh without being clean. Today’s my birthday and I’m trying to remember if I was ever youthful and fresh…? Maybe when I was 5?

Thanks for all the kind birthday wishes! No perfume purchases because I’m “hoping and wishing and praying” that luckyscent gets in some of Vero’s scents soon. Then a bottle of Onda VdE will be my last perfumes purchase for quite a long time. T-Rex did manage to find me the most perfect crossbody to replace my stolen leather one that I loved. I don’t know where she got it, but she has great taste and a real knack for purse purchases! ?

Now I’m off to donate body fluids for clearance for my next contract. Thanks again for the birthday wishes Nice People! ?

Doing female perfumers as well, in fact I might just stick to two houses. Goutal and Nicolaï. Not just female perfumers but perfume houses led by women as well.
Anyhow, SOTD is Quel Amour which I had to dig out of the back of my fridge.
Tea is Meghalaya SFTGFOP (CL) LaKyrsiew, sort of like a Darjeeling with a hint of Assam.

When I was putting on my face this morning (all my skincare I mean), my eye cream fell over on my shelf and took a decant with it. So that’s how my decision was made. The fallen decant was Miller Harris La Pluie, incidentally made by a woman, Lyn Harris. It’s a lovely and serene perfume for Monday. Angela wrote a nice review of it years ago:

For real, there is no right mood; which is why I took the hit for my circle of college friends we came of age during the 80s/90s and so MJ was part of our childhood/teen years. The stuff that is reveal weighs like a ton on the heart, and you really start thinking about how celebrity is created, and sold, and used- like a weapon.

        And also: RIP Luke Perry.

Joining in on the camp of a week of female perfumers. This has already proved to be a great idea, as I have found my NEW FAVORITE VANILLA SCENT OMG. I’m in DSH Vanille Botanique from a sample from a very kind NSTer and it is just the most fabulous, boozy, gourmand vanilla EVER. It’s almost vanilla pudding. I just looked up the notes and none of them are liquors; hmm. But the blast of booze right up front was unmistakable.

Speaking of fabulous booze smells, we got a new bottle of gin the other day: Uncle Val’s Botanical Gin. It’s great!!! It’s got this fabulous cucumber note in it, along with some delightful herb garden-lemon notes, plus the usual gorgeous ginny bouquet. It’s pretty sweet, too, which means it’s enjoyable for me to sip neat. My boyfriend had some last night in a cocktail with blackberry and ginger shrub and sparkling water, and it was heavenly. (I’m still on antibiotics, so no more than a few sips for me 🙁 I made myself blackberry ginger shrubby water, but it really needs a splash of gin to round it out.) Anyway, it’s wonderful and also reasonably priced, so check it out. And if you have tried the other two flavors from that company, let me know how those are!

I’m not sure why they WOULD blame Trader Joe’s. Don’t most vanilla extracts contain alcohol? It seems like a determined teenager could get drunk from vanilla extract made by any producer. (That’s a very expensive way to get drunk. With that kind of money, there must be faster ways to do it.)

      • Koyel says:
        5 March 2019 at 12:27 am

It is hugely, enormously different! Hendricks is my go-to gin; it’s fabulous in mixed drinks, a nice balance of flavors that adds the right kind of roundness to any drink. I would never dream of drinking it on its own, though, and would hesitate to even with sparkling water. (I’m not the biggest fan of tonic water.)

Lately, we’ve been drinking Junipero gin, which has some stronger piney (juniper, I guess), foresty, rosemary flavors. It’s great. I don’t need to dress it up much.

But Uncle Val’s is packed FULL of flavor. OMG. If you’re not a gin fan, I don’t know if you’ll like it. It’s almost like an extremely strong cocktail on its own. The Botanical one we got has such a big cucumber and lemon kick to it, in addition to all those Junipero-level forest herby notes.

So what I’m saying is that I love Hendrick’s in mixed drinks, and if I only had to get one gin for the rest of my life, …well, it would likely be Junipero, actually, which is like Hendrick’s+. I would get sick of Uncle Val’s if that’s all I had for the rest of my life, but only because it is so full of flavor. So it’s hard to compare the two!

Thank you so much! As I said, I am not a huge gin fan but I do like Hendricks — we use sparkling water plus tonic syrup plus I usually add some grapefruit bitters.

It does sound like I would NOT like Uncle Val’s, but maybe my husband would love it.

Mmm, grapefruit bitters sound good; that’s a nice idea. I think you might like my grapefruit gin spritzer: gin, sparkling water, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, a touch of simple syrup or honey syrup if the grapefruit is too tart, and muddled thyme, with a nice twist of grapefruit peel and a pretty little thyme garnish on top. If I had grapefruit bitters, I’d add those, too!

If your husband tries the Uncle Val’s, I hope he enjoys it 🙂

Yes, that sounds good! It is similar to what I do with Charbay Pink Grapefruit Vodka. I try to have fresh grapefruit juice ice cubes in the freezer, although at the moment I’m all out.

    SOTD = April Aromatics Irisistible

I’m probably going to go with an all women perfumer week or at the very least women-owned and managed perfume houses even if they are not the perfumer.

I used a heavy hand with Irisistible (6 sprays). It is rooty (which I originally typed “footy”) with an aldehylic bite. Aldehydes is not a listed note but I believe the jasmine and tuberose (which I cannot distinguish separately) gave it the lift. Rose is listed but I did not smell it. If you were light-handed, you will be in turnipy carrot territory. More is more and I love it!

That sounds like a fantastic iris! I agree, more is more with some of them.

I gassed myself with 7 sprays of L’Attessa tonight.

Wasn’t aware of the community project but serendipitously chose SSS Rose Volupte this morning. Don’t have much left but I’m enjoying it while I can.

Wearing vintage Mitsouko extrait. Just had a wicked craving for vintage Mitsouko. Was at my local grocery store to pick up lunch meat and saw that after March 14th, they will not sell Amazon gift cards. I think it’s because Amazon bought Whole Foods and they are not liking that bit. I enjoy buying gift cards at actual stores instead of online for some reason.

Went with Margiela Untitled L´Eau by Daniela Andrier. I like the green and incense notes with citrus a lot.
Got my eBay package today, and the two perfumes i bought for 1€ each are really vintage. I guess from the early 90ies. One Chanel N5 and one Jil Sander N4! What a deal. Even with the original packaging. And the scent is fine too.

I’m wearing FL/18 by Nathalie Benareau for A. N. Other perfume. I smell like a jasmine leather jacket with a tiny bit of sweetness. Swoon.

I sniffed the Jo Malone Wildflowers and Weeds collection yesterday. I really liked the nettle one and my friend really loved the willow/ amber. However, I didn’t like the nettle one enough to even think about it – my no buy is still intact! Woot!

Bulgari Eau The Noir – I need to recover from an opulent weekend of Amouage scents. I think Jubilation 25 was a bit too much for me (or the amount I sprayed on, anyway), and I needed something way different today. This will go on the swap list!

My approach to the theme will be to wear a scent (or scents) each day which remind me of some of my favorite women. Today I wore No 5 L’eau, which was given to me a few years back by my much-beloved older sister. Tonight i’ll wear her signature, Portrait of a Lady. I rarely commit to wearing heavy hitters to work, but she always does. My favorite story is of a student who walked into her office and asked, “Why does it smell like earth and raspberries in here?” Portrait!

Posting late today and like so many others, I’m going with female perfumers this week. Today I’m wearing En Voyage perfumes Zelda while I think of Mardi Gras. Might wear this tomorrow too. I always get the magnolia but everything else is on a wear by wear basis – Zelda morphes back and forth through mint, galbanum, cucumber and everything green I can think of, it’s green and gorgeous.
